River & South Review seeks short plays

Website

Deadline: March 15, 2025 by 11:59 PM

SUBMIT VIA SUBMITTABLE

River & South Review seeks to be a home for work that evokes a visceral reaction, encourages continued conversation, captures the adventures of life, and spurs our readers to go find their own adventures to write about.

As writers, we want writing that makes us wish we had written it. We want writing that makes us think and wonder; laugh and cry; sigh and scream; nod our heads yes and no. We want work that stays with us long after we’ve left the page. And, of course, we want all of this in well-crafted pieces that demonstrate skill with form and language.

The editorial staff of River & South values inclusivity and diversity. To that end, we especially welcome the opportunity to read and consider work by under-represented and marginalized voices including but not limited to Black, Indigenous, Latine, Asian, and South Asian writers, members of the LBGTQA+ community, writers with disabilities, and older adults.

River & South Review publishes twice each year – a Summer issue in June and a Winter issue in January.

Submissions open February 15 for summer issues. Submissions open August 30 for winter issues.

For those who have previously submitted, please wait one entire submission period before presenting additional creative work.

River & South Review only publishes previously unpublished work. We consider content appearing in print and online journals, anthologies, books, and personal blogs as published.

Currently, we do not publish AI-generated work. Please do not submit poems, essays, or short stories you’ve created using AI.

We do not publish work by anyone with an affiliation to Wilkes University, the Maslow Family Graduate Program in Creative Writing, or the writing workshops that Wilkes University offers.Fiction – submit one (1) original, previously unpublished story up to 2,500 words in a .doc, .docx, or pdf file and title each as follows: YourLastname_Title.

Stage and Screen Scripts – submit one (1) original, previously unpublished script up to 12 pages in a .doc, .docx, or pdf file and title as follows: YourLastname_Title. Script submissions may be one acts, or a complete scene from a longer work. Send us your dialogue-driven works whose characters will make us wish they were real people we could meet in person.

Formatting for stage scripts: Center and capitalize all titles. Place your name underneath the title. Left justify character names and descriptions. Dialogue is also justified left with the character’s name, followed by a colon and then the dialogue. If there is a stage direction it should come after the colon and be enclosed in parentheses and italicized. Dialogue then follows in normal type. Please do not send plays in Standard American Format.

Once you submit in any genre, you may not re-submit a revised version during the same submission period.

You may send one submission per genre per reading period.

We welcome simultaneous submissions, but please notify us immediately if a piece you submitted is accepted elsewhere.

We are unable to offer payment to contributors at this time.

River & South Review requests First North American Serial Rights and the right to archive our contributors’ work. All other rights revert back to the author upon publication. Please acknowledge River & South Review as the journal of first publication when placing your work elsewhere.

We only accept submissions via Submittable. Please do not email your submissions.

If we reach our capacity, we will close submissions before the deadline. So, submit early!

Third Annual Fern Street Play Festival

Website

Deadline: April 1, 2025
Only the first 250 submissions

September 19, 20, and 21, 2025

Known locally as the church on Fern Street, The Universalist Church of West Hartford, Connecticut has a history of using theatre to build connections across our own progressive congregation and the local community. We continue to widen the circle of this tradition by inviting voices from far and wide to be part of our third annual play festival. Our mission is to uplift and examine the human condition through theatre. To that end, we invite playwrights to submit short plays, new or old, published or unpublished, to our no-fee juried play festival.

Our first two festivals were a great success, attracting in the second year more than 250 submissions from around the United States and several other countries. Out of this pool, nine plays were chosen for seated readings and were performed by outstanding actors from the community. The Festival attracted an enthusiastic audience over two nights. In 2025, we plan to have three performances.

This year, selected plays will receive a $100 honorarium. One grand prize will be awarded in the amount of $250.

Each selected play will be produced as a seated reading for a live audience. We plan to make a video recording of each individual play reading and make those available to the playwrights, to be used at their discretion, excluding commercial purposes.

INSTRUCTIONS – PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW CAREFULLY

Submit a properly formatted playscript for the stage. For formatting guidance, go here.

Make the script itself “blind” by removing any reference to the playwright’s name, address, bio, past performances, or awards. Please do put your full identifying information in the body of the cover email.
The play may be from any genre – drama, comedy, etc. It should be a complete, short play – no longer than 25 pages. We will consider only one play from each playwright submitting.

Email your script as a PDF document to
FernStreetPlayFestival@gmail.com by 11:59 p.m. on April 1, 2025.

No late submissions will be accepted.

NOTE: We will stop accepting submissions when we receive 250 scripts.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Plays will be chosen for performance based on the following criteria:

1. Dramatic literary skill.
We will especially appreciate submissions that use drama as the main literary device. Plays that rely too heavily on exposition or are written in a didactic style will not meet the criteria for dramatic literary skill.

2. A performance time of no more than 20 minutes.

3. Illustrative of at least one of the Unitarian Universalist Seven Principles or Shared Values.
• 1st Principle: The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
• 2nd Principle: Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
• 3rd Principle: Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
• 4th Principle: A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
• 5th Principle: The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
• 6th Principle: The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
• 7th Principle: Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
• The Shared Values are: Love, Interdependence, Equity, Transformation, Pluralism, Generosity, and Justice.

We will select plays that we believe resonate with one or more of those principles.

REVIEW AND NOTIFICATION
A group of qualified readers will begin a blind review of scripts immediately. We plan to notify all writers of the outcome of the selection process no later than July 1, 2025.

PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED PLAYS
If selected, your play will be produced as a seated or minimally staged reading for a one, two, or three-performance run, depending on the number of plays selected. Performances will be held in the sanctuary of the historic Universalist Church of West Hartford and videorecorded. Performance dates are slated for September 19 and 20, in the evening, along with a matinee on September 21.
Productions will use a mix of qualified professional and amateur actors. The director(s) will have extensive theatre backgrounds.

The Festival will be marketed and advertised throughout the greater Hartford area.
Playwrights are welcome and encouraged to attend a performance if at all possible. If traveling from afar, writers will need to cover their own travel and lodging expenses.

Fresh Binder Productions submissions Spring 2025 Writer’s Cohort

Website

Deadline: March 23, 2025 a 11:59pm

Submit here: https://tinyurl.com/fb-spring-cohort-2025

Fresh Binder Productions has opened submissions for their Spring 2025 Writer’s Cohort!

During the Spring Writer's Cohort, we hope to provide a safe space for transgender and gender nonconforming playwrights in NYC to workshop new full-length works. Whether you're workshopping a previously produced work or starting from square one, we want to support and help you build your story.

Every Monday night from 6pm - 9pm, lasting from April 15th to June 17th, selected writers will meet in person in Manhattan or Brooklyn and will be given the opportunity to workshop their pieces and support their fellow cohort members' works.

This can mean your new pages being read allowed by fellow writers, brainstorming sessions from previous pages, or any other way we would best assist you in the writing process.

There is no fee to apply.

We are only looking for playwrights who identify as transgender/non-binary/gender non-conforming and are based in NYC/are able to commute to NYC on a weekly basis for meetings.

Writers will be selected and notified in early April. More information can be found on freshbinderproductions.com. Please email freshbinderproductions@gmail.com for any questions or concerns.

To apply, please fill out this google form: https://tinyurl.com/fb-spring-cohort-2025

Fresh Binder Productions is a theatrical home for emerging transgender/non-binary/gender non-conforming (TGNC) playwrights. Founded by Bailey Jordan Garcia and Roni Ragone in January 2024, Fresh Binder aims to support marginalized artists within the theatrical community while producing new, thought provoking work. In addition to our goal of uplifting more TGNC artists and work into the theatrical pantheon, building and creating community for these early career TGNC artists has become a high priority. Fresh Binder offers two writers’ cohorts every year in which playwrights are able to workshop and create pieces fully amongst other TGNC artists. Outside of cohorts, Fresh Binder produces workshops and staged readings of works in development—fostering growth among the community. Ultimately, Fresh Binder wants to spotlight TGNC playwrights rather than specifically TGNC storylines, changing the narrative on what TGNC writers are “supposed” to write about.

THE CLUBBED THUMB BIENNIAL COMMISSION 2025

Website

Deadline:  March 20, 2025 11:59PM EDT

Every other year Clubbed Thumb invites playwrights to propose plays inspired by a particular prompt. The application is open to all, and the anonymous proposals are read by a panel of theater artists. The winning proposal(s) receive (or split) a $15,000 award and development support. We are pleased to announce our next Biennial Commission.

This year we lost one of our great comic dramatists: Christopher Durang. We’ve been reflecting on how powerful and much-needed savage humor like his is in a world like ours today.

So, for the 10th Biennial Commission, please consider his work, especially from the 1980’s. We read Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You, Beyond Therapy, The Marriage of Bette and Boo, and Baby with the Bathwater, but feel free to engage with any of his work. We highly suggest reading out loud.

Your play should include:
  • A dysfunctional family or relationship (but this is a Clubbed Thumb show so anything but a biological family or romantic relationship)
  • A mangled version of a song in the public domain
  • A kilt
  • A series of nicknames (which may or may not be explained)
  • A spiritual middle manager

You can have three stage directions total for the whole play, with one exception…

“She/he/they/it throws a __________.”

You can include this one as many times as you want.

You can have three props of your choosing, plus any of the following: a Snoopy doll, a snake-in-the-can, a reward cookie, or a dead baby.

Think about the funniest actresses you’ve encountered. Write hysterical, vicious, and virtuosic parts for them.

As always, please consider the Clubbed Thumb parameters and aesthetic.

TO APPLY: SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING THROUGH THE FORM BELOW

(this is a ANONYMOUS submission, see notes below)

1) A one-page letter of intent describing your proposed project;

2) 10 exploratory pages from the proposed project (either contiguous or from different sections of the proposed play);

3) One of your finished plays, for reference;

4) Your resume

IMPORTANT NOTES

No names please — on the letter, the 10 page sample or the finished play for reference, or in any file names. The panel reads all submissions anonymously — the only place your name should appear is on the info form and on your resume.

The letter of intent should briefly map out the proposed piece and, if need be, orient the reader to the excerpt’s relationship to the whole. You needn’t explain or repeat anything that your 10 page sample makes clear. Then give us an idea of where the piece is coming from and where you think you want to go with it.

We ask you to include one of your finished plays for reference. Note (where prompted in the form) any relationship or similarities the complete play has to the proposed project, and recommend 10 pages for us to start with.

One last thing: this is a commission for Clubbed Thumb. So look around our website at our guidelines and production history for reference, if they are not familiar to you. Many of our plays have been published individually or in our anthologies and are widely available to read.

DEADLINE: THURSDAY, MARCH 20th, 2025 11:59PM EDT

The proposals will be read and adjudicated over the course of the spring/summer, and the commission(s) awarded by the fall. The $15,000 commission — which might be split between writers if the panel so elects — will be paid out in installments, with the first installment following the signing of a contract. Send questions to info[at]clubbedthumb[dot]org

Sarah Congress ~ private writing coaching and script mentoring

Award-winning comedic playwright and screenwriter Sarah Congress is offering private writing coaching and script mentoring 💞

"Writing a play was always a dream but as a fiction writer and journalist, I couldn’t figure out how to make it work. In just a few sessions, I’ve experienced several “a-ha” moments with Sarah. I always leave my time with her excited by my project and its potential. The skills I've learned have made me a better writer all around. I don’t think I would have ever written a play without her input."

~ Leah Eichler, award-winning short story writer and publisher of Esoterica magazine

"My biggest takeaway from last night is that anything can be made funny. That really dovetails beautifully with my deep gratitude for a healthy sense of humor, even in the darkest moments…."

~ Gay Norton Edelman, Author/Editor

Sarah Congress is a comedic playwright/screenwriter represented by Samadani/Tall. This January her satire "Big Yikes!" was read by the UP Theatre, and her ten-minute play "Fresh Kills" was read at the NYPL Lincoln Center. Her ten-minute play "Melting" was produced at Siena College for their Climate Symposium (October 2024), by the Tank Theatre for the IHRF Festival (December 2024) and will be published in issue #12 of Feels Blind Literary this spring. Sarah co-wrote the screenplay "I Can't Hear You" which won BEST COMEDY in the 2024 Jersey Shore Film Festival. Her ten-minute play "Overdose" won 2nd place for BEST SHORT in the 2023 Downtown Urban Arts Festival.

Sarah teaches playwriting/screenwriting, works as a script doctor, and is delighted to be a joke writer for the 2025 Broadway Cares celebrity roast.

AS LONG AS I KNOW HOW TO LOVE by Tom Misuraca ~ video excerpt

AS LONG AS I KNOW HOW TO LOVE by Tom Misuraca
was chosen as one of the finalists for the RESISTING FASCISM project. You can learn more about Tom at http://www.tommiz.com/

This is an excerpt from the play, with Steven Lee as Alan and Cameron Rankin as William.

STEVEN LEE is an actor, playwright, and singer/songwriter. His play "Chariot" was produced and performed at the Stella Adler theatre; and he was awarded a showcase of his play "Husband Material: a play of no manners" with the Celebration theatre, both in Hollywood. Currently, he is on the board of the longest running writing group in Los Angeles, First Stage, where many of his plays have received readings. Steven has also acted in many plays from other talented playwrights. He is a Spanish teacher and the department chair of the World Language department at a middle school in Los Angeles. Samplings of his music can be viewed on Instagram at Steven Lee 323.

CAMERON "TOMMY" RANKIN is an actor out of Los Angeles with a real passion for pursuing his dream of on-screen acting. Trained in New York City in theater and continued, and still continues, his screen acting with Gregory "Kenzo" Kenyon.
Cameron says:
Always looking for the next project, I often write, produce and act in my personal projects. My latest major project was a 6 minute film based on the Cyberpunk world by Mike Pondsmith. It was critically acclaimed by major studios, but what really mattered to me is that the author who wrote Cyberpunk back in the 1980's found my email and wrote praises to me! Currently I'm writing and acting in sketches in the hot new (rolls eyes) vertical format and I'm having a lot of fun with it!
