Hot City Theatre Festival

Three plays will be selected for the Festival. These plays will receive a week-long (November 13-21) workshop with director, dramaturg and professional actors. The workshop will culminate in a public reading followed by audience response sessions. HotCity artistic staff will then select one script for a fully produced world premiere as part of the company’s 2012 mainstage season.
HotCity Theatre is pleased to welcome back dramaturg Liz Engelman as festival dramaturg for 2011.
Eligible submissions must meet the following criteria:
  • Received after January 1, 2011 and no later than April 1, 2011
  • Require a maximum of six actors
  • Running time of between 75 and 120 minutes
  • Never before published
  • Never before professionally produced, no pending productions.
Submissions must include:
  • One-page cover including plot synopsis, reading/production history
  • Cast requirements
  • Technical requirements (special or unusual set, lighting, costuming, sound, prop requirements)
  • A ten-page sample from the script.
All requested information must be formatted into a SINGLE attached Word Document. Scans or pdfs will not be considered. Do not send entire text.

Approximately 20 plays will be selected as semi-finalists at which time full scripts will be requested. To be selected, playwrights must be able to attend the entire festival and workshop week, which begins on the Sunday prior to the festival weekend. About Face Theatre is happy to announce that it is now accepting scripts for selection for XYZ.4: Festival of New Works. This year, we have chosen Rube Goldberg and his incredible machines as a starting place for the festival. Let this inspire your choice of submission. Plays selected for the festival will be given seated or staged readings with the support of professional directors and actors.

Full length scripts at any stage of development. New works that have not seen full production (readings and workshops are okay). In addition to plays, we welcome performance pieces that are in late stages of development. Material that challenges expectations and ideas about gender and sexuality in historical or contemporary contexts. Scripts that break traditional ideas about dramatic form, structure and presentation.

Electronic submissions only. Documents in PDF or DOC formats accepted. In addition to a script, performance pieces can include video links to youtube, vimeo or other online platform. Premiere Stages at Kean University seeks full-length plays

Premiere Stages, the professional theater company in residence at Kean University seeks submissions to the 8th Annual Premiere Stages Play Festival. The yearly competition for unproduced scripts offers developmental opportunities to four playwrights born or currently residing in the greater metropolitan area (New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut). The winner of the festival will be awarded $2,000 and a full Equity production in Premiere's 2012 season. The runner-up will receive $750 and an Equity workshop in June; two other writers will receive Staged Readings in March and a cash prize of $500.

Through the uniquely accelerated Play Festival process, Premiere Stages provides an encouraging and focused environment in which playwrights can see their work move quickly from page to stage. Premiere Stages also actively advocates for Festival writers, helps playwrights reach out to other theaters to secure subsequent productions, and partners with other organizations and theaters to extend the profile and life of the works developed. "What makes Premiere unique is that we fast track plays from a sit-down reading to a fully staged production within a few short months, keeping highly topical plays relevant while affording playwrights the benefit of retaining the world premiere rights," stated John Wooten, Producing Artistic Director of Premiere Stages. "Second productions of new plays are extremely rare, and demanding the 'world premiere' brand often stops a play dead in its tracks."

In its seven seasons, Play Festival has developed over twenty-five plays. Most recent works include the 2011 hit Follow Me to Nellie's by Dominique Morisseau, James Christy's Egyptian Song (2011 Runner-Up and a current National New Play Network nominee), and 2010 winner The Good Counselor by Kathryn Grant, which was named as the runner up for the prestigious 2011 American Theatre Critics Harold and Mimi Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award.

All entries are evaluated by a panel of theater professionals in consultation with the Artistic Director and Resident Dramaturg. Agents may submit full scripts; playwrights may submit a synopsis and script sample directly. Postmark deadline is January 15, 2012. No entry fee. What if...

Snorks and Piñs Productions is seeking submissions for their second annual By the Light of a Match short play festival. Plays will be performed in New York City at The Spark Art Center on March 17th and 18th 2012.

This year’s festival theme is What if… What if Shakespeare never wrote a single word? What if Buddy Holly missed his flight? What if we evolved from toads rather than monkeys? What if your alarm didn't go off this morning? What if Joan of Arc found a boyfriend before she found God? Our lives and our histories are made up of an infinite amount of moments that lead to an infinite amount of different lifetimes. From the tragic to the comic. From the fast-paced to the slow and ponderous. From the epic to the subtle. Everything is possible and all of it dramatic. Snorks and Piñs is looking for five 8-12 minute plays that illuminate these scenarios. We want you to think about the past and ask...what if...?

By the Light of a Match is a festival designed to support emerging artists and to encourage new audiences to New York’s independent theater scene. This is not your typical short play festival. Five plays will be selected, brought together and intertwined in unique ways by the festival director. The Festival Director designs how the festival is presented to its audience and creates an ensemble atmosphere, connecting the pieces as he/she chooses. The plays are then presented to audiences who will vote on their favorite playwright, director, actor and actress. The audience’s favorites will then go on to host next years festival! The writer will not only have his/her play presented in the following festival, directed by the winning director and performed by the winning actor and actress but will also choose the theme for that festival. The winning director will also take on the role of festival director.

We are seeking submissions from playwrights and directors at this time.

The deadline for all submissions is 5pm on January 8th, 2012.

Directors: please submit a resume, one letter of recommendation, and a brief paragraph about yourself and your directing style. Playwrights: please submit a 8-12 minute play with a separate title page (plays will be reviewed by a committee and selected for the festival anonymously). All submissions should be sent to submissionssnorksandpins@gmail.com.

A little fine print: Playwrights will maintain rights to their work. Snorks and Piñs provides auditions and casting assistance to directors, rehearsal space for the group rehearsals and the performance venue. All actors participating in the festival must audition and priority casting is given to Snorks and Piñs company members. The director and playwright are responsible for finding suitable rehearsal space (must be in Manhattan) and gathering props and costumes for the performance. If a playwright has a director they would like to work with they should have the director submit with the name of the playwright and the title of the play in the subject line of their submission.

Over 900 plays were submitted for the 2011 10 By 10 in the Triangle.

A panel of judges will select plays to showcase in The ArtsCenter mainstage theatre July 5-22, 2012.

10 By 10 Submission Guidelines:
To submit a play for the 10 By 10 Play Festival, please email us recent, 10-minute plays with minimal set requirements. Monologues are not accepted for submission. Musical submissions are accepted, provided that they require little or no accompaniment.

Playwrights may submit up to two (2) plays.
Plays MUST be submitted in standard format (Courier or 12 pt font) in Word or PDF.

Please send two separate emails for each play in the following format: (submissions not following these guidelines will not be accepted)

Submission Emails:

Email 1: The subject line of the email is the title of the submitted play followed by the words Contact Info. (For example: For the play "Poker Face," the email subject line would read Poker Face Contact Info.) The body of the email contains only the title page of the play with playwright contact information (including title of play, name of playwright, mailing address, email address, phone and website, if applicable). Please use the full title of the play as we often receive plays with similar titles.

Email 2: The subject line of the email and name of the attached file are the title of the play. The Award:
Playwrights receive an award of $100. Playwrights who attend our playwright gala on July 14 will also receive a $100 travel stipend.

The Space:
Our main stage is a 300-seat theatre with basic lighting and sound capabilities.

The Producer:
ArtsCenter Stage will provide directors, actors, designers, and technical staff for the festival. The directors will contact the playwrights at the beginning of the rehearsal process. For more about The ArtsCenter, visit our website.

The Dates:
Festival dates are July 5-22, 2012.

Playwright Gala:

Women's Work. Women's Words.
An evening of staged readings of Women's Work, to coincide with International Woman's Day.

Submission deadline Dec. 31 2011

We are looking for short plays - under fifteen minutes, or a scene from a longer play that can stand alone. The plays must be written by women and preference will be given to members of The International Centre for Women Playwrights (ICWP), and those committed to attending the readings, as we will have a Talk Back session following each act.

No one will be paid for this event, as it is a fund-raiser for ICWP and WOMEN IN CRISIS IN THE WATERLOO REGION.

Ideally, the playwright would be responsible for casting and rehearsing, but we have plenty of directors at the ready, as well as a group of excellent actors. We'll be trying to live-stream the event.

Some props, some staging, some costume, but books must be in hand. It’s important the audience always know these are readings and not staged productions.

Thespian Production in NYC is accepting plays for our 2012 Ten Minute Showcases. Plays can be any genre.

Submission guidelines;

Plays must be no longer than 10 minutes.

Plays may have up to 4 characters maximum.

This showcase will be a black box so only one simple set will be allowed.

We hold an open call for One Act Play Scripts annually.

Submission Dates: November 1st 2011 to January 15th 2012

Plays will be vetted by RSP Ensemble, and the top 15-25 plays will receive a staged reading for the public in spring, from the reading series, audience & ensemble favorites will be given a fully produced run in the summer of 2010.

East Valley Children’s Theatre is searching for aspiring playwrights to become a part of the theatre’s future seasons of performances. Contest rules and prizes are listed below.

• All Plays must be submitted to EVCT no later than March 15, 2012. Must include a cover sheet with name, address, phone number, email address.)

• Plays must be suitable for children to perform for children. (Small casts are not as likely to be chosen for performance.)

• Plays must be one hour to one hour and a half in length. (Shorter plays may be submitted but they will not be considered for production by the theatre as one of its season’s productions.)

• Plays and Musicals must not have been previously performed. They must be original and unpublished.

• Musicals must include a copy of the music in some form, either manuscript or recorded.

• Cash prizes will be given for the first, second and third place entries.

• The first place entry will not only receive a cash prize but also will be produced by East Valley Children’s Theatre in its upcoming season, if it meets all the criteria for performance.

High Tide Script submission guidelines

The majority of writers and plays that HighTide produce are identified through unsolicited script submissions. We read every play that is sent to us.

Submission Guidelines

- We accept full length plays, written in English.

- We do not accept screenplays, treatments or radio plays.

- We welcome International writers to submit as long as the play is in English.

- You should avoid lengthy description or synopsis, including suggestions on casting or staging. We believe that a play should speak for itself.

- We only consider one script from any writer at a time. Should you have more than one play, please only submit the play you wish most to be professionally produced.

- We ask that all literary submissions are accompanied with a covering email / letter telling us more about you and any past experience of writing.

- We prefer scripts to be submitted by email, sent to scripts@hightide.org.uk. All email submissions will receive a response to confirm that the script has been safely received by HighTide.

Ticking Clock Productions, LLC. is bracing for its first winter, a season typically marked by festivities, warm drinks, and unremitting horrors laid bare by the sun’s diurnal retreat. Keeping such images in mind, we’ve decided to celebrate in an appropriate fashion.

On December 17th, TCP will broadcast (on the internet on our website) a live performance of your original works at the honorable Sam Brocato Salon. A live “radio” show, if you will, complete with professional actors, a foley table, and concise musical spectaculars!

Each year, Kitchen Dog Theater selects one original script to receive:

A fully staged production (as part of our regular season – a five-week run)
Paid travel to Dallas, TX (if necessary) to work with the Director, Cast and Crew
Royalty stipend (amount TBD)

Seven other original scripts will be selected for staged readings as part of the Festival (travel not included).

Prospective scripts must meet the following guidelines:

Full-length plays only (preferably one hour or longer)
Submitted scripts must be type-written
Completed scripts only
Do not include a synopsis and/or reviews (if any) of the play
Ideally have between one and five actors (character doubling acceptable)
There are no restrictions on play content.

Only one script per playwright may be submitted.

All unproduced scripts will be recycled.

Playwrights! Come play with us! TCL is seeking short comedic sketches to be included in Comic Con con Comedy. Please submit short plays that follow these guidelines:

2 to 8 minutes in length.
Simple staging requirement; unusual costumes are acceptable.
PG-13 or tamer content.
Cast size should be 7 or fewer.
Plays that include female characters are encouraged.
The sketch needs to be related to the “comic con experience,” which could include comic books, fan conventions, superheroes, manga, etc.
Amusing flights of imagination are encouraged!
Multiple submissions from the same author are welcome.
Deadline for submissions is January 12, 2012.

Please submit your scripts as an email attachment (pdf preferred) to our artistic director, Madge Montgomery (madge@tclstage.org). Put “Comic” in the subject line of the email. There is no fee for submissions, so get cracking!

Playwrights whose work is selected to be included will receive a small stipend based upon ticket sales. The production will be presented in July, 2012 at the Mary Miller Theater in Lafayette, Colorado. Playwrights retain all rights to their material.

In 2008, TCL produced 10,000 Wayniacs: Very Short Plays Inspired by Wayne Newton. It was a tremendous success with sold-out shows. One script from the production, The Strapper by C.P. Stancich, went on to win a national 10-minute play contest. In 2010, we produced G-Men in G-Strings: The J. Midwinter Madness Seeks One-Act Plays for Feb. - Mar. 2012

John Chatterton is looking for new one-act plays for the Second Annual Midwinter Madness Short Play Festival, happening in February-March 2012 at the Roy Arias Studios in Times Square:
Dates for the Festival are Feb. 13 - Mar. 4, 2011.
We are looking to expand on last year's Festival, with 2 theatres and a greenroom.
Plays should run 30 to 60 min. Scripts should be submitted in standard playscript format.*
Any subject matter okay, including musicals.
The Festival will not combine shorter plays to make full programs. All plays must be off-book. There will be no staged readings.
Production requirements must be minimal: rehearsal cubes, a table or two, some chairs (all provided by the Festival), and your own props and costumes, which you must bring with you and take home for every performance.
Tickets will be $12-15. There are no fees. The Festival takes the door.
Festival participants may see their own and other shows for free, seating permitting. These comps may not be transferred to anyone else. Otherwise, there are no comps.
Shows must be non-Equity. No showcases or Equity waivers, please!
The Festival will provide a press agent, venue manager, lighting designer, and box-office manager. You must provide your own board op. (The Festival has a list of available qualified technical staff from which you may draw. They are competent and reasonably priced.)
While the Festival provides the venue and staff, you must provide the production. Roy Arias Studios may offer discounts on rehearsal space, at its own discretion.
There will be a tech rehearsal running 2.5 times the running time of your show, during business hours Mon. thru Fri.
All performances will take place from 6 pm to 11 pm weekdays or 11 am to 11 pm weekends.
Each show will receive at least 3 performances, probably all in the same week. Shows that sell the most tickets in advance may receive more performances.
The Festival will provide a program "wrapper": you must provide a program specific to your show, and insert it into the wrapper for distribution to your patrons.
There will be a juried award ceremony after the Festival, with cash awards for the most popular plays.
*12 pt Times Roman; character names in the middle on their own line; line spaces between speeches and stage directions; indented stage directions; 1" margins all around.

I've presented a lot of Festivals, and I have a special interest in short plays. They're an easy, cheap, and fun way to see your work on its feet.

Turnip Theatre Company in association with American Globe Theatre will accept submissions for the 18thh Annual New York City 15-Minute Play Festival through January 1, 2012. This popular short play competition will be presented at American Globe’s 75 seat theatre on West 46th Street in the heart of Times Square April 23 through May 5, 2012. Turnip Theatre Company established the 15-Minute Play Festival in 1995 to present audiences with short, well-crafted plays while at the same time offering a professional venue for theater artists. American Globe Theatre became a Festival co-presenter in 2001. Over the past 17 years more than 500 new short plays have been presented, with many going on to subsequent productions and several to publication.

Each year approximately 35 original short plays are selected from submissions from all over the United States and several foreign countries. Four to five plays are presented each of the first eight evenings of the semi-finals with one play chosen each night to move on to the finals and two additional performances. Finalists compete for $100 cash prizes for Best Play, Best Direction, Best Performance, and Audience Favorite. Finalists are also eligible for The Alan Minieri Memorial Playwriting Award in honor of Turnip Theatre Company’s late Co-Artistic Director who died of cancer in 1997. The $300 Minieri Award is presented to a playwright whose work challenges convention in both content and form. Each semi-finalist whose work is presented in the Festival receives a $25 royalty. There is no entrance fee

· Playwrights and/or their representatives are responsible for the production of their play including casting, rehearsals, props, etc. The Festival presenters provide basic set pieces and lighting, sound equipment, and production staff.

· Plays are selected solely on the script submitted. Please do not include a playwright resume or play production history. Plays should have a beginning, middle, and end (though not necessarily in that order). Plays that create a unique world, are unpredictable, and can stand alone without complex production values are favored by the presenters. Monologues and published plays will not be considered.

· Submissions must be typed in play script format and be no more than 15 pages and in a font size no smaller than 12 point Times Roman or Courier/Courier New. Only plays with a running time of 15 minutes or less are eligible.

· Only one submission per writer will be accepted. If multiple plays are submitted by a single author, only one will be chosen at random to be read by the play reading committee.

· Please include contact information such as an address, phone number and e-mail address.

· Submissions should be sent by regular mail to 15 Minute Play Festival, c/o American Globe Theatre, 145 W. 46th Street, New York, NY 10036. Submissions are not accepted by email, fax, or express/overnight mail. Submissions must be postmarked by January 1, 2012. Playwrights whose plays are selected will be notified in mid February 2012. In Process and Production

1. ARTISTIC INTEGRITY. No one (e.g., directors, actors, dramaturgs) can make changes, alterations, and/or omissions to your script - including the text, title, and stage directions - without your consent. This is called “script approval.”

2. APPROVAL OF PRODUCTION ELEMENTS. You have the right to approve the cast, director, and designers (and, for a musical, the choreographer, orchestrator, arranger, and musical director, as well), including their replacements. This is called “artistic approval.”

3. RIGHT TO BE PRESENT. You always have the right to attend casting, rehearsals, previews and performances.


4. ROYALTIES. You are generally entitled to receive a royalty. While it is possible that the amount an author receives may be minimal for a small- to medium-sized production, some compensation should always be paid if any other artistic collaborator in the production is being paid, or if any admission is being charged. If you are a member of the Guild, you can always call our business office to discuss the standard industry royalties for various levels of production.

5. BILLING CREDIT. You should receive billing (typographical credit) on all publicity, programs, and advertising distributed or authorized by the theatre. Billing is part of your compensation and the failure to provide it properly is a breach of your rights.


6. OWNERSHIP OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. You own the copyright of your dramatic work. Authors in the theatre business do not assign (i.e., give away or sell in entirety) their copyrights, nor do they ever engage in “work-for-hire.” When a university, producer or theatre wants to mount a production of your play, you actually license (or lease) the public performance rights to your dramatic property to that entity for a finite period of time.

7. OWNERSHIP OF INCIDENTAL CONTRIBUTIONS. You own all approved revisions, suggestions, and contributions to the script made by other collaborators in the production, including actors, directors, and dramaturgs. You do not owe anyone any money for these contributions. If a theatre uses dramaturgs, you are not obligated to make use of any ideas the dramaturg might have. Even when the input of a dramaturg or director is helpful to the playwright, dramaturgs and directors are still employees of the theatre, not the author, and they are paid for their work by the theatre/producer. It has been well-established in case law, beginning with “the Rent Case” (Thompson v. Larson) that neither dramaturgs nor directors (nor any other contributors) may be considered a co-author of a play, unless (i) they’ve collaborated with you from the play’s inception, (ii) they’ve made a copyrightable contribution to the play, and (iii) you have agreed in writing that they are a co-author.

8. SUBSIDIARY RIGHTS. After the small or medium-sized production, you not only own your script, but also the rights to market and sell it to all different media (e.g., television, radio, film, internet) in any commercial market in the world. You are not obligated to sign over any portion of your project’s future revenues to any third party (fellow artist, advisor, director, producer) as a result of a production, unless that production is a professional (i.e., Actor’s Equity) premiere production (including sets, costumes and lighting), of no less than 21 consecutive paid public performances for which the author has received appropriate billing, compensation, and artistic approvals.

9. FUTURE OPTIONS. Rather than granting the theatre the right to share in future proceeds, you may choose to grant a non-exclusive option to present another production of your work within six months or one year of the close of the initial production. No option should be assignable without your prior written consent.

10.AUTHOR’S CONTRACT: The only way to ensure that you get the benefit of the rights listed above is through a written contract with the producer, no matter how large or small the entity. The Guild’s Department of Business Affairs offers a model “production contract” and is available to review any contracts offered to you, and advise as to how those contracts compare to industry standards.

We realize that making demands of a small theatre is a difficult task. However, you should feel confident in presenting this Bill of Rights to the Artistic Director, Producer, Literary Manager, or university administrator as a starting point for discussion. At the very least, any professional in the dramatic arts should realize that it is important for writers to understand the nature of their work - not just the artistic aspects, but the business side, as well - and that they stand together as a community, for their mutual benefit and survival, and for the survival of theatre as a viable art form in the 21st century.

January 2012 Play of the Month

10-Minute Play of the Month: JANUARY 2012

The theme for January 2012 is "Civil Rights." Although this is in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK Day is January 16) your play can be about any civil rights issue: voting rights, marriage rights, etc.

Deadline: Sunday, January 8, 2011, 11:59 PM

1. Send only one ten-minute play per author to info@nycplaywrights.org

2. The script submission should be sent by email, with the play itself as a file attached to the email. File format should be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) or pdf. Most preferable is .pdf (Portable Document Format) because it will retain your original script formatting.

3. The script can be no longer than 10 pages (not including title page, setting info page, etc. - pages will be counted only from where the actual on-stage directions and dialog begin.)

4. The script should be in standard playscript format. If you are not sure what that is, see this page on the NYCPlaywrights web site:


Plays that are not in standard format, or that have more than 10 pages (not counting title page, etc.) will be rejected immediately.

5. Make sure you have your name and your email address on the title page of the script.

6. Plays can be from anybody, anywhere in the world, but must be primarily in English (a few non-English phrases are acceptable, but the phrases must include English translations in production notes or stage directions.)

7. There is no fee for submission - and no payment given for the plays selected. Do not send a submission if you are expecting monetary compensation.

8. The NYCPlaywrights selection decision is final and NYCPlaywrights reserves the right to select no plays from those submitted.

9. The play must have been written by the person making the submission.

10. The play can have had a previous production but cannot have been published.

11. All rights will remain with the playwright.

12. The selected play will be videotaped and posted during the month of January.

13. The video recording of the play reading will be posted to the NYCPlaywrights YouTube account and from there embedded into the NYCPlaywrights blog. The embedded section may be an excerpt of the play reading rather than the entire reading. The playwright will be asked to review the video recording and approve it before it is made

14. The play must reflect the month's theme in some meaningful way.

15. The readings that are recorded are actual script-in-hand readings, not productions - although there may be some video production work, such as multi-camera views, music, titles; or minor stage work such as hand props or actor movements. Playwrights invited to pen a World Premiere with Fermilab Scientists

for Fox Valley Rep's 2nd Collider New Play Festival

Now accepting new play submission through January 1, 2012

Collider: New Play Project partners area scientists and Fox Valley Repertory to develop new works that help us better understand the universe and who we are, while illuminating and celebrating the worlds of art, science and technology.

Fox Valley Repertory is uniquely located within the Illinois Science and Technology Corridor. Illinois is the home of the internationally renowned Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia and is a Midwestern and national leader in science and technology research and development.

The plays will tap into both playwright and scientists' curiosity and desire for knowledge and human understanding. Playwrights will consult with volunteer scientists and engineers. This collaboration will allow both artist and scientist to share their personal outlook and creativity while ushering in a new play. The playwright will be invited to have their script work-shopped with professional directors and actors during the Fox Valley Rep's St. Charles Summer Theater Fest from July 6-31, 2012. Public, world premiere staged readings will be held on Saturdays at 1pm.

How to Submit

Potential Collider Playwrights need to submit a synopsis/outline of a play they propose to write based on our Collider mission (To help us better understand the universe and who we are, while illuminating and celebrating the worlds of art, science and technology).

The Centenary Stage Company, an Equity theatre in residence on the campus of Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ is accepting submissions for the 2012 Women Playwrights Series (WPS) and Susan Glaspell Contest .
Now in its 20th year, the WPS is a developmental program dedicated to providing a working forum for the unique and underserved voice of women writing for the theatre today. Each season three new plays are selected for a collaborative workshop process, with a professional director and actors, which takes place in a brief rehearsal period, over a period of a approximately one week, allowing time for the playwright to hear and adapt their work with other professionals. The process culminates in a presentation of the work for the public as part of the Series giving CSC audiences larger exposure to new work, as well as offering the playwright an opportunity to get feedback from the audience during the development process.

Playwrights selected for the workshop process will receive a $200 honorarium. Additional funds for travel and housing are available for one playwright each season.

THE 2011 SUSAN GLASPELL CONTEST: One play from the WPS Festival will be selected by a panel of judges as the winner, to be featured in a subsequent CSC main-stage season as a full production, with an additional award of $1500 to the playwright.

Nancy Brewka-Clark on the origins of the play:
I attended the dedication of Emma Safford's new gravestone a few years ago with various members of the Cape Cod Wampanoags who held a powwow first. Then we all marched through downtown Ipswich carrying a street-wide banner honoring Emma and smoked the peace pipe at her grave, except I had to turn the pipe down because I'd quit smoking. All the people mentioned in the dialogue actually existed historically.

NYC/Metropolitan Area Playwrights

Dear Playwright,

You are invited to submit an original 10-minute play to Abingdon Theatre Company’s THE DENIAL PLAYS Benefit Challenge. This effort engages artists who support a theatre dedicated to new plays.

Our Denial Plays Benefit Series challenges your creativity to write a short drama or comedy within these parameters:
· Features a character who is faced with overwhelming evidence of his/her participation in an activity and/or behavior, which they absolutely deny;

· The character IS or IS NOT successful in their denial (they may have to face the truth); and,

· The play is set outdoors.

Scripts will be given preference (although these are NOT requirements), if they include:

· A socially relevant theme;

· Multi-ethnic casts.

We strongly encourage original play submissions that are developed for this presentation.

Using your skills and imagination, write an original play that will be presented as a staged reading on the set of Abingdon’s next production, LOST ON THE NATCHEZ TRACE, by Jan Buttram and directed by Kate Bushmann. We are seeking plays written in any style that reveal a fresh plot, sufficient conflict and a running time of 10 minutes, maximum. Be creative! Plays are due at midnight on January 13. SERIES A performs on Tuesday, February 7, and SERIES B performs on February 14. Are you ready? Here are the guidelines. Please read carefully!

1. Abingdon presents the play. We provide the actors, directors, stage manager, rehearsal space and the theatre (the 55-seat Dorothy Strelsin Theatre at the Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex, 312 W. 36th Street, NYC).

2. This is also a fundraiser to support Abingdon’s New Play Development Program. ALL participants are donating their time and talent, and HELPING TO RECRUIT AN AUDIENCE. Our goal is to fill every seat in the house! The suggested audience donation is $10.

3. Each playwright and director will be able to attend the staged reading of their script in designated seating.

4. Every play gets two performances.

Please make sure you follow all submission requirements.

1. Your play must adhere to the theme of denial.

2. Your play must be set outdoors. Available set pieces are 3 cubes (or crates).

NOTE: The stage dressing is a wooded marsh area.

3. Write for a cast of 2-3 actors (any age, race, ethnicity, or gender). Multi-ethnic casts are encouraged! Casting may be non-traditional. If you feel this would compromise your vision of the play, let us know. Specifying this will not influence our consideration.

4. We prefer scripts that can be staged without relying on stage directions. If stage directions are necessary, please keep them to a minimum.

5. Your script will be presented as a staged reading in accordance with AEA guidelines. Keep production values to a minimum. Costumes are at the discretion of the director and the willing cooperation of the actors. No hand props can be used.

6. Plays should be in standard script format: 12 point font, 1” margins on all sides, and character names on a separate line. On your title page, please include your contact information (phone, email and address). Be sure to number all pages.

7. Submit scripts in MS-Word - preferred - or PDF format.

8. Scripts longer than 10 pages – title and character breakdown pages are not counted – will NOT be considered. Regardless of the number of pages, the running time MUST be no more than 10 minutes!

9. You may only submit one script for consideration.

10. Playwrights must attend the staged reading. Please specify your availability for SERIES A (2/7), and/or SERIES B (2/14). If you are available for either slots, let us know that, too!

11. We encourage you to attend rehearsals, if possible. The schedule will be determined later.

12. The deadline for script submission is midnight, January 13. Up to 12 scripts will be chosen.

Caffeine Theatre will only read plays within our mission. Caffeine welcomes 10-15 page samples and synopses by mail or by email, as well as full scripts by email only. Asunción Playwrights Project

Pregones Theater's Asunción Playwrights Project showcases the work of Latino and Latina playwrights exploring issues of difference and transformation at the limits of queer identity. The project fosters fun and genuine dialogue between playwrights, theatermakers, LGBTQ communities, and a general audience. We especially seek works that challenge normative straight/gay binaries. Submissions by women writers are encouraged. Both Spanish and English language manuscripts are welcome.

Finalists commit to a public reading and open discussion. A panel of peers, industry professionals, scholars, critics and previous winners makes the final selection of the year's winning play.

The winner recieves a $500 award and the play is given a professionally cast workshop production at Pregones Theater.

Selection Process
The selection process is made up of two preliminary rounds.

The first round is open to all. A completed application form must be submitted with a 10 page sample of the work.

The second round is by invitation only. Up to eight playwrights from the first round are invited to submit their work in its entirety for final review. The public readings are selected from this group of finalists.

All plays must be original, full length works for the stage that have never been produced and are not currently under option. Plays may be submitted in Spanish or English. Monologues and/or one-person shows will not be considered. Asunción will only consider works of superior artistic rigor that meet one or more of the project's criteria:

• explore issues of difference and transformation at the limits of queer identity;
• challenge normative assumptions of gender;
• present Latino spiritual and sensual explorations beyond the boundaries of gender and essentialist notions of sexual orientation;
• go beyond coming out stories;
• challenge normative notions of family;
• dwell in alterity and encounter;
• place queer expectations of love and sex in a Latino cultural/historical context;
• are significant to the lives of Latino lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and queer people.

The Asunción Playwrights Project is recognized with a special merit recognition from HOLA Organization of Latin Actors and a feature in Ollantay Theater Magazine.

APPLICATION guidelines
1. Download and complete the Asunción Application Form or request a hard copy by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Jorge B. Merced, Associate Artistic Director, Pregones Theater, 571-575 Walton Avenue, Bronx NY 10451.
2. Include a brief description of the play and two copies of a ten-page sample. DO NOT INCLUDE A FULL COPY OF THE SCRIPT.
3. Samples must be typewritten or word-processed in typeface no smaller than 12 point, double-spaced and on 8½" X 11" white paper. You may submit works in either English or Spanish.
4. If you are submitting more than one script, you must complete an application for each work. No more than two entries per writer will be accepted each year.
5. Include a copy of your resume with the application.
6. Please include a self-addressed stamped postcard, or e-mail address to confirm receipt of your entry. COD Deliveries will not be accepted.
7. Please include a return package with sufficient postage if you would like your script returned.
8. All applications must be written, signed, and submitted by the playwright.

The current application deadline is February 14, 2012 (postmarked).
Faxed, e-mailed, or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

The Last Frontier Theatre Conference Call for Plays

The Last Frontier Theatre Conference has released its Call for Plays for the 2012 Play Lab. The Conference takes place from June 10-16, 2012. Selected plays receive public readings at the Conference, with both public and private feedback sessions led by theatre professionals. Authors must register for the Conference and be in attendance for their reading.

This Play Lab will feature plays from 20 minutes to 2 hours in length. Accepted writers will also have an additional opportunity to present their work in the 10-Page Play Slam, the Monologue Workshop, and the late-night Fringe Festival.

The submission guidelines are as follows:

Plays must be received by January 5, 2012.
Submissions should include an approximate running time for the play, between 20 minutes and 2 hours.
The play must not have received a professional production; readings and amateur productions are acceptable.
No musicals are accepted.
One submission per author.
Plays can be submitted via e-mail as either a PDF or Word document to dmoore@pwscc.edu.
Authors should include their mailing address with their submission.

Plays presented at the Conference have gone on to productions throughout Alaska and the rest of the United States due to the exposure received there. A festival featuring exciting performances of new short plays that revels in the celebratory and communal nature of story telling. Hosted in the raucous environment of Tierney's Tavern Upstairs , The StrangeDog Beer-Batterd Festival focuses not just on exhilarating new works, but on the joy of reaching audiences in a non-traditional theatrical venue.

All submissions should come through this page, and should be submitted by December 15, 2011. There is no submission fee.

Five new "winning" plays by emerging playwrights will be selected by our committee to be performed in the festival on Friday and Saturday, March 9th and 10th 2012. Playwrights are responsible for the "production" of their play; finding a director, casting, and rehearsing. All plays must be staged and performed "off book."

On a mandatory tech day, the StrangeDog crew will accommodate any lights or sound, along with focusing on evening cohesiveness to achieve not just a festival, but a solid night of entertainment. If needed, StrangeDog Theatre can assist in casting or providing a director.

The Drunken Judges Award: Each evening of performance will feature "The Drunken Judges Award" in which a non-industry non-professional (perhaps someone who has never even been to a play before) guest judge will be chosen, thoroughly inebriated, and at the conclusion of the performance will select their favorite play of the evening.(Remember, all plays selected are "Winning" Plays...the Drunken Judge is just for fun.)

Submission Announcement and Guidelines
The Strand currently seeks script submissions for its 2012-2013 season and the summer Friends and Neighbors Festival for 2012. The Strand encourages creative and innovative scripts. The Strand encourages submissions by women with roles for women. The Strand will select plays that are relevant, well-written, and experiment with new theater conventions.

About Friends and Neighbors: The Friends and Neighbors Festival is a five week-long festival that includes a new script performed at the Strand every weekend for five weeks with an admission price of $5. The Friends and Neighbors Festival was created to give local artists a chance to perform experimental pieces in front of an audience with the support of a fully functional theater. The Friends and Neighbors Festival also allows theater patrons to explore new works affordably. All playwrights are given a stipend of $100. Plays are fully produced by the Strand Theater, on a small budget. Playwrights are supplied with a director and stage manager, and given use of the Strand space on a sign up basis.

Season Plays: A season play must be full length. The Strand seeks innovative plays that break conventional theater standards.
Friends and Neighbors Festival: The Strand encourages playwrights, performers, comedians, etc, to submit to the FN Fest. The FN Fest accepts performance pieces that range from traditional plays to performance art to workshops. Everything is encouraged. There are no limitations! If you are not submitting a traditional play, please submit a written statement describing your proposed performance or idea. For possible inclusion in the 2012 Friends and Neighbors Festival, please send plays by Monday, January 9, 2012. New plays granted a production will be selected by Monday, February 13, 2012. If you have submitted your play to past Friends and Neighbors Festivals, please resubmit for consideration this year. The Strand will not produce plays that have previously been produced in Baltimore.

Studio 42 seeks "unproducible" plays

Studio 42 is always continuing its search for “unproducible” plays to build an even more unproducible repertoire.

The concept may seem paradoxical, especially when considering what exactly makes a script un-feasible. Put simply, we consider an unproducible play to be one in which the cast size, subject matter, potential depravity, complexity of staging, or scale of spectacle take the play out of consideration for most other companies or producers in their right minds. They should be extreme, outrageous, epic, imaginative, and surpass the boundaries of convention. Our belief is that the right combination of these qualities – especially when coupled with satire, allegory, or fantasy – make up what’s most transporting, stimulating, and surprising about theatre.

We offer a variety of opportunities for playwrights, including AEA Showcase Code productions; workshop productions; Stay-Treat), an individually tailored development workshop; and Studio Sessions, our annual reading series.

We select playwrights based on two factors: (1) the quality and potential of the writing, and (2) a one-on-one interview during the first week of December 2011.

We are looking for plays on all subject matters- story and structure that dare to be different.

Scripts don’t need to be perfectly polished; we will happily accept unfinished work.

We accept only unpublished plays (but un-produced and previously produced plays are both acceptable).

The Polygraph Tests is a residency program committed to enriching the process of theatre development by pairing selected playwrights with collaborators eager to guide and inspire the scripts’ evolution.

We are looking for dangerous stories that expose and examine the ways in which desire and impulse define human relationships. Writers of all ages and from all experience levels are invited to submit plays that align with our mission statement:

True False Theatre is a group of artists dedicated to creating high-quality dramatic theatre that challenges the imagination and inspires a more conscious and compassionate community. Our goal is to probe modern value systems through entertaining productions of socially relevant plays, which uphold a commitment to exciting and empowering New York City.

This program features a three-week rehearsal period focused on giving writers the time and tools they need to experiment and develop strong character development, plot structure, and dialogue. Each playwright will work alongside a director and actors who are excited to inspire the author’s vision and provide him or her with feedback regarding the rewrites made during the residency. After a mid-process public reading allows each artist to experience their play with an audience, everyone returns to the rehearsal room for another week of collaborating with the writer. The residency ends with a second public reading celebrating the plays in whatever state they are in at the time.

Premiere Stages 2012 Play Festival

Premiere Stages is committed to supporting emerging playwrights by developing and producing new plays. Through our Play Festival script competition, Premiere Stages offers developmental opportunities to four playwrights. We provide playwrights with an encouraging and focused environment in which they can develop their work through discussions, rehearsals, sit-down readings, staged readings, and fully-produced Equity productions.

Beginning October 15, 2011 through January 15, 2012 Premiere Stages will accept submissions of unproduced new plays from playwrights born or currently residing in the greater metropolitan area (New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania). There is no fee to enter. All plays submitted to the festival are evaluated by a professional panel of theatre producers, dramaturgs, playwrights, scholars and publishers.

Four of the submitted plays will be selected for staged readings with equity casts in March of 2012 and awarded cash prizes. Following the March readings, the winner of Play Festival is selected for a full production during the 2012 Premiere Stages Main Stage Season and awarded $2000; a second play will be selected for a 29 hour Staged Reading and be awarded $750, and the two other finalist writers will be awarded $500.
At Premiere Stages, we pride ourselves on a uniquely accelerated process, in which plays we find particularly promising are developed and fully produced within a year of submission. In many professional theatres the time span between meeting a writer, staging a reading and producing the play can be years. At Premiere Stages, immediately following the Spring Readings, two plays enter an intensive development phase. Playwrights work with a director, dramaturg, and design team to develop the play for a staged workshop or full production only a few months later. When we find a writer we believe in, our play festival process allows Premiere Stages to fully commit the time, talent, and resources necessary to share their work with a broad regional audience.
Premiere Stages’ productions offer playwrights the chance to see their work fully realized on stage. We hope, however, that the plays developed at Premiere will go on to subsequent productions throughout the country. Because of this, playwrights whose scripts we produce retain the coveted “World Premiere” brand on their plays. Premiere Stages also strives to facilitate relationships between playwrights and other theatre professionals who we think will respond to their work.

Premiere Stages will accept full scripts from literary agents or theatre professionals familiar with our work. All other writers are required to submit an 8-page script sample and synopsis. Please review full submission requirements and guidelines below.
2012 Premiere Play Festival Submission Guidelines Plays must be full-length and have a cast size of no more than eight.

Plays submitted must be unpublished and must be works that have not been previously produced (readings, workshops, showcases are okay).
Plays must be written by playwrights who were born or reside in the greater metropolitan area (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania).

Playwrights of color are highly encouraged to submit their work.

Plays and synopses will be evaluated by a panel of arts professionals. The panel will submit their recommendations to the producing artistic director and resident dramaturg.
Playwrights (non-agent submissions) Playwrights submitting without an agent must include:

A brief synopsis of the play (no more than half a page).

A character breakdown.

A history of the play’s development (if any).

The playwright’s professional bio.

A script sample from the play (no more than 8 pages).

The panel will request full scripts from synopses of interest. Playwrights who are asked to submit full scripts, including those not selected for expanded development, will receive an evaluation of the submitted play from the panel upon request.

Agent submissions

Full scripts will be accepted from legitimate literary agencies and by professional recommendation of someone with an affiliation to Premiere Stages. Agents may submit electronically (PDF format only).

Award seeks to help new art and artists thrive in our ever changing world. We seek to give voice to those with the courage to speak.

Yearly, the Patti B. Playwriting Award acknowledges two artists.
One artist will be acknowledged with a fully produced production of their play.
The second will be acknowledged with a monetary award to be paid to a college or writing program to assist with tuition, or to be paid to a theatre company to produce their work.

The Patti B. Playwriting Award will acknowledge one submission per year per artist.

Please submit all materials to: pattibplaywritingaward@gmail.com. In the subject line of the email, please be sure to list the title of your play, your name, and 2012 Patti B. Award. EX: MEASURE FOR MEASURE (William Shakespeare) 2012 Patti B. Award.
We will only be accepting electronic applications.

When submitting your play, please be sure to submit:

1) a blind copy of your script (remove all contact information from the script). Please make sure to include a list of characters.

2) a cover letter or resume detailing your experience as a playwright, as well as your complete contact information.

3) a synopsis of your play (no more than one page)

Applications are accepted from 11/1/11 until 11:59PM on 12/31/11.
Due to high volume of submissions, we are not able to send email confirmations immediately, so please be patient. All submissions will be acknowledged by 1/1/2012. Finalists will be contacted in mid-March, and winners will be contacted in May regarding their awards.
