Diez Minutos 2018 seeks 10-minute plays

web site

Players Workshop seeks plays for its Sixth Annual International 10-Minute Play Festival. This fully-staged festival will be in English, and will take place March 14 - 25 of 2018 in the international arts center of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico — a World Heritage Site brimming with charm, history, and culture. San Miguel was voted Conde Nast Traveler Magazine 2013 "Best City in the World.”

There is no fee for submitting.

Each playwright whose script is selected and performed will receive a $25 USD cash honorarium and two complimentary tickets to the production. One play will be selected as the Audience Favorite and its playwright shall receive an additional $25 USD cash award. No other remuneration will be provided, and any playwright attending must do so at his or her own expense.

Submission Guidelines
Players Workshop may delete, without reading, any submission that does not comply with these rules.

Only one play may be submitted per entrant. Send us your best!

Only the first 100 plays entered are guaranteed to be considered. Producers reserve the right to consider additional plays not received in the first 100.

We’re asking for blind submissions again this year.

The theme for 2018 will be “Lost in Translation.” Scripts must relate to the theme but are not otherwise limited in subject matter or content. However, there must be no nudity, and suitability for performance before a general adult audience will be a factor in selection.

No musicals or children’s plays, please.

The play must be submitted by email, as an attached PDF file. No MS Word files or other formats will be accepted. The subject line of your email should include your name and the title of the play.

The submission shall include all contact information for the playwright, including name, address, telephone number and email address on a separate title page; the script must be in standard play format, with a title page, a character listing, the setting, props, and any technical requirements or other production considerations. Your name must not appear on the script. The two files should be titled "Submission [Name Of Play]” and "Title Page [Name Of Play].”

The play must be in English and no longer than 10 pages in standard format, with a calculated running time of no less than eight minutes and no more than twelve minutes.

Submission period opens on August 1, 2017.

Entries must be received prior to midnight U.S. Central Standard Time, August 31, 2017.

No late submissions will be accepted because of transmission problems.

The play must be unpublished, but may have had previous productions. If the play has had previous productions, a production history must be included with the submission. The submitting playwright must own all rights to the play.

Selection of plays will be at the absolute discretion of the judges.

Selection of a play does not guarantee production. Producers may decline to produce a selected play because of casting, directing or any other consideration, in which case no payment will be due the playwright.

Selected entrants will receive a list of the festival scripts by email. Notification is expected to be made no later than December 1, 2017. Only playwrights whose plays were received in the first 100 submitted will receive first-round notification.

Only playwrights whose plays have been selected for performance during the festival will receive notification of acceptance.

Plays are restricted to 4 or fewer characters. Our talent pool is composed mostly of actors aged 40 and older. This will be a factor in selection.

Entering playwrights grant the producers of Diez Minutos permission to perform the play a maximum of twelve times during the Diez Minutos 2018 festival, and to make as many copies of the script as are necessary for production. All other rights remain with the playwright.

Submitting Your Play
Please address your submission to: diezminutosfestival@yahoo.com. Any inquiries should be addressed to the same address.

Thanks, in advance, for helping us to make Diez Minutos 2018 a great success. We look forward to reading your entry.

The World Crime League’s F**ked Up Xmas Special”

web site

Play Submissions for “The World Crime League’s F**ked Up Xmas Special”

We’re looking for an assortment of fresh and original holiday(ish) plays to fill an evening. Since this is the World Crime League, we’re not looking for your traditional feel-good, holly jolly holiday fare. We’re looking for dramas and comedies as black as the soulless coal eyes of Frosty the Snowman, and perhaps some horror plays, more frightening than an eternity of being forced to listen to the “Christmas Shoes” on loop.

The World Crime League’s F**ked Up Xmas Special will be performed at the Phoenix Theatre in Minneapolis, December 7-10, 2017.
And now the rules and guidelines (read all these before submitting):
-The World Crime League will start accepting submissions beginning April 1, 2017 and continue accepting them until August 1, 2017.

There is NO entry fee.
-Scripts should have a title page that contains your name and contact information.
-Submissions should not exceed 30 minutes- there is no minimum for length. We are also potentially interested in monologues to be performed between longer pieces. No musicals, children’s plays, or adaptations (fresh spins on folk tales and legends are welcome).
-Although this is referred to as the “F**ked Up Xmas Special,” it does not mean that plays have to be restricted to being about Christmas. Works dealing with Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, the Winter Solstice, New Year’s Day and anything in between would be considered. You know...the winter season holidays and such.
-Scripts should be submitted in PDF format. Send your submissions to worldcrimeleagueproductions@gmail.com
-We’ll consider scripts from anyone, anywhere. Just keep in mind that your submission(s) should meet with the theme and guidelines of the festival. Also, this is a given, but you should be the author of the piece being submitted.
-Every individual involved in this project will be paid a small stipend, consisting of an even cut of the box office profits. Playwrights will also be able to see the show for free, if they are able to make it.
-Submissions do not have to be world premieres. We don’t care if this would be the first or fiftieth performance of your piece. We only ask that your script has not received a professional performance in the Twin Cities area (staged readings, workshops, and academic performances are fine). Playwrights retain rights to any submitted work.
-Please refrain from submitting plays dealing with dysfunctional families coming together for the holidays, unless you have a very unique spin. Nothing against these type of stories, but they’ve been done to death.
-We’ll accept a maximum of two submissions per playwright (plus one monologue, if you have one). If you submit two knock-out scripts, there is a chance both will be performed, but you would still receive the same cut of box office.
-These plays will be performed by a small ensemble of actors, so please try to submit works with small casts (or plays that can be achieved by doubling with said small ensemble). By small cast, I would suggest not having more than five or six people onstage at a single time.
-The Xmas Special will be presented at a small venue, most likely with a minimalistic set. If your play can work with that (or be made to work with that), send it on!
-Plays will be reviewed and selected by the World Crime League and a jury of directors and other theatre artists who may be involved with the production. Depending on volume of submissions, this may be a lengthy process-so be patient if you don’t hear anything for a while. Playwrights will be notified whether their submission is accepted or not.

If you’re interested in being involved with this project as an actor, director, and/or designer: keep your eyes open for updates. Although the World Crime League won’t be hiring directors and designers until we have an actual date and venue, you can send your resume to worldcrimeleagueproductions@gmail.com for future consideration. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reply to this message or email/private message the WCL.

New Voices Series seeking short Halloween themed scripts

web site

The LTA Millennial Committee is sponsoring the second installment in our New Voices series and we need your Halloween themed short plays! We want to provide a platform for unknown playwrights and new directors by staging original shows directed by Millennials. Following our wildly successful inaugural spring event (over 100 attendees in one evening) we will be putting on a two night Halloween-themed performance on October 27th and 28th, 2017. To submit a show, please read the following closely.

THEME: We will select three shows of 30 minutes or less each that have a Halloween theme. This can be interpreted any way you want - murder mysteries, dramas, comedies, historical or modern - it's all up to you. It can take place at Halloween or it can have a creepy/macabre/supernatural element, or any other way you want to write it!

LOCATION: Little Theater of Alexandria has a small 3 story historic building next to the theater, and this will be our performance space. Each show will have a floor and the audience will move between. Please note, tech is VERY minimal in the space (essentially we can turn the light on and off, and that's about it) so shows with a great deal of sound or other technical needs will need to be altered to reflect this.

Dates & Deadlines: submissions must be received by July 31st, 2017.
All submissions will receive a notification regarding selection by August 10.

Other Notes: It is free to submit, and no pay will be provided to winners; we operate on a volunteer basis only. You may submit a maximum of three shows. More than one show from the same author may be selected. Preference will be given to shows from VA/MD/DC, but you can submit from anywhere. No age restrictions on playwrights, although Millennials will be given preference if shows are otherwise of equal quality. Shows may have been performed elsewhere.

To Submit: Send the following to Ashley Amidon at aaamidon@gmail.com. Submissions not providing this information will not be considered. All shows must have a run time of 30 minutes for less; preference is for shows of 15 + minutes.

In the email: Please send an email to aaamidon@gmail.com with the subject "Play Submission". In the body of your email, please include your full name, City/State of residence, a phone number, and whether you fall into the millennial age range.

Attached to the email:

Please attach a full PDF copy of the script with no personal identifying information.

AND

To be posted online if selected: either a 5 page selection of the script that can be shared with prospective directors and actors OR indicate in your email you are willing to share the entire script.

SUBURBAN HOLIDAYS 2017

web site

QP is seeking one-act play submissions for our sixth Suburban Holidays production of new holiday plays the for November/December, 2017 Production.

Suburban Holidays explores the theme of the holiday season (in whatever form that means for the playwright) in a town “very much like Reading, MA.” Though this festival takes place in November and December, all holidays, not just the Christmas/Chanukah season are encouraged.

Since this festival draws a large pool of talented actors, plays featuring more than 4 characters will be considered first. Larger cast plays are strongly encouraged!

We would prefer to produce plays of 20-30 minutes in length, however, plays between 10-35 minutes are accepted.

Preference is given to playwrights from New England, though any playwright may submit.

If you are not a resident of New England, your play will be considered, but we do give preference to our area, to increase the chances of having the playwrights visit and see their plays in our festival.

Plays must be submitted electronically in MS Word or PDF format, written in standard play format to the festival Producing Director, Patrick Cleary at patrickjamescleary@gmail.com. Paper copies of plays will not be accepted.

Submissions must be received by noon on July 31, 2017.

Plays must be the original works of the playwrights and unpublished at the time of production. Preference is given to unproduced works, but works with limited production runs will be considered.

Original musicals will be considered, though musical accompaniment will be restricted to a keyboardist, should a musical be produced.

Playwrights whose plays are chosen for production will receive an honorarium of $100 for the festival.

Playwrights whose pieces are chosen will be notified via email no later than August 15, 2017. Selections will also be posted on the Quannapowitt Players website.

If you have any questions about this festival or the guideline submissions, please contact Patrick Cleary at patrickjamescleary@gmail.com .

Please include the subject line “Suburban Holidays” on submissions and questions.

The International Festival of Horror Radio Plays

web site

The submission window for Deathscribe X, the 10th Annual Festival of Horror Radio Plays, is from May 1 to July 31, 2017. Submissions are accepted VIA EMAIL ONLY at deathscribe2017@gmail.com.

Every year we seek 10-minute radio scripts that are genuinely scary, imaginative, chilling, intelligent, suspenseful, horrific or downright grotesque. Writers may submit up to two radio plays to Deathscribe in any given year. Five scripts will be selected from all submissions. These five pieces will be performed on stage in front of a live audience. The writer of the winning piece, chosen by a celebrity panel of judges, will receive the coveted Bloody Axe Award, as well as a $100 cash prize.

Guidelines:

PDF format is strongly preferred. If PDF is not possible, then only MS Word please.
All scripts must have a title page with all contact information, but NO identifying information should appear anywhere else in the document.
Scripts must be no more than TEN MINUTES in length, and should follow radio drama format. An example of proper radio drama format can be found here: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/scripts/bbcradioscene.pdf

The Deathscribe experience includes performing the pieces on stage with Foley artists and a band creating the sound effects and music live. Therefore, scripts must be ready to produce, including direction for sound and music cues. Sorry, but submissions cannot include usage of copyrighted music.
Writers may submit up to two (2) scripts for Deathscribe consideration in any year.

NO SCREENPLAYS. SCREENPLAYS WILL BE DISCARDED. WE KNOW THEM WHEN WE SEE THEM. (Nothing against screenplays. But this is a radio play festival.)

DO NOT submit full-length plays for consideration in Deathscribe. They will be discarded. If you wish to submit a full-length horror play to WildClaw, see our general submission guidelines.

All submissions must be made electronically. Please make sure your script is formatted correctly according to the guidelines and submit your script as an attachment to deathscribe2017@gmail.com. Please include the title of your play in the subject line.

Deathscribe selections are “blind.” The title page should include the title of the script, names of all authors, and the address, phone and email address of the author(s). The subsequent pages must include only the manuscript title and page number and NO identifying personal information (name, address, email, etc.) or it will be disqualified.

Please be aware that these scripts, if chosen, will be performed by no more than 6 actors, therefore scripts with more characters will require double casting by the director of the piece.

Questions? Email them to literary@wildclawtheatre.com.

Manuscripts cannot be returned. Plays are considered on a rolling review basis. Playwrights will be contacted if we are interested in moving forward. No phone calls, please.

Submissions will be considered for both staged readings and full production. Participation in readings does not indicate a guarantee of future production.

Compensation is as follows:

For readings, playwrights will receive a small stipend as well as round-trip travel (via Megabus) to and from NYC as well as housing accommodations in Naples for a few days leading up to the reading date. BVT will provide rehearsal space, a director and a cast of actors drawn from our professional company. Writers are expected to participate in a post-reading discussion with the audience and may be asked to participate in another community engagement event, to be determined on a case-by-case basis.

For full productions, playwrights will receive a guarantee of $1000 against a percentage of the box office revenue. Our contract has been reviewed by the Dramatists Guild.

Round-trip travel and housing accommodations are provided in order to allow the writer to be in residence for a portion of the rehearsal period and for the play's Opening. Writers will be asked to participate in an Opening Night reception and may be asked to participate in another community engagement event, to be determined on a case-by-case basis. Plays will run for a total of 10 performances and will be supported by a professional director, design team, production staff and cast as well as a production budget equal to all other productions in our Main Stage season.

The Lark's Jerome New York Fellowship 2018-19

web site

The Lark’s Jerome New York Fellowship provides substantial artistic and financial support to an emerging writer of extraordinary promise and vision through an intensive two-year residency that provides resources and guidance to generate and develop a significant body of work.
Activities:

The Fellowship Period is January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019.

In the first year, the Fellow will receive a stipend of $25,000, paid in monthly increments. In addition, the Fellow will have access to an “Opportunity Fund” of $5,000 for the purposes of travel, research, autonomous workshops, and so forth, for the duration of their fellowship and for up to one year after its completion. (The Fellow will request these funds in writing to the Artistic Director and no reasonable request will be refused).

In the second year, the Fellow will receive a stipend of $15,000, paid in monthly increments. In addition, the Fellow will continue to have access to any remaining balance in the Opportunity Fund.

Because the Lark's programs are philosophically designed to put artists at the center of their own process, all residency activities will be based on an initial Fellowship goal-setting meeting at the start of the term in January 2018. The Fellow will be expected to work with Lark staff to design a regular schedule of program activities, including participation in several of Lark’s new play development programs, such as Roundtables, Playground, Monthly Meeting of the Minds, Winter Writers’ Retreat, New York Stage and Film Vassar Retreat, Project Residencies or Studio Retreats. The exact structure is flexible based on the specific needs of the selected Fellow, who will participate in a range of these or similar programs throughout the course of the residency.
Additional activities will include:

  • Monthly one-on-one meetings with Lark's Artistic Director John Eisner;
  • Regularly scheduled meetings with Lark's artistic staff, including Director of Artistic Programs Lloyd Suh and Director of Scouting & Submissions Andrea Hiebler, as mutually decided;
  • At least 3, and up to 10 Roundtable readings of the Fellow’s' new plays in progress, to be scheduled throughout the residency period, at the Fellow’s request;
  • Opportunities to participate in offsite programs and partnerships in the U.S. or abroad;
  • Finance and entrepreneurial workshops including Lark’s Business of Art workshop.

Application deadline is 5:00pm EST, Monday, July 31, 2017.

Selection Process:

  • By application. The Fellow is selected by a diverse panel of theater professionals familiar with Lark programming and philosophy, but will not include current Lark Staff or Board Members.
  • Eligibility requirements:
  • Must be a New York City or Minnesota state resident (though the Fellow must commit to maintaining residency in New York City throughout the fellowship period);
  • Must be a citizen or permanent resident of, and eligible to work in, the United States;
  • Must self-identify as an "emerging" playwright;
  • Must not have had more than two different works professionally produced at the time of application (meaning works produced on professional Actors Equity contracts or similar international contracts; Equity showcase/waiver productions are not included).

Finalists will be notified in September 2017. Additional work samples will be required from all finalists, including a copy of one full-length play.

Notification for all applicants will take place by November 2017.
2018-19 Application:
Please submit:

  • A cover sheet, including your name, address, telephone number and email address.
  • A one-page theatrical resume listing all productions, workshops, readings, commissions, publications, awards, etc., as well as education and training information;
  • A 10-page work sample of theatrical writing that best represents your current work as a playwright;
  • An Artist Statement (not to exceed two total pages) that answers the following questions:
  • In what way(s) do you consider yourself an "emerging" playwright?
  • How would this Fellowship and the activities described above be transformative to your work and/or life as an emerging playwright?
  • What specific goals do you have in your work for the upcoming year and beyond?

Applications may be emailed in MS Word or PDF format to jerome@larktheatre.org. Electronic submissions are encouraged. Mailed submissions can be sent to: The Lark, Attention: Jerome New York Fellowship, 311 West 43rd Street, Suite 406, New York, NY 10036. Applications are due by 5:00pm EST, Monday, July 31, 2017.

Tilted Windmills Theatricals presents
Puffs, or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic

An Epic journey that reimagines what a boy wizard hero can be.
Written by Matt Cox
Directed by Kristin McCarthy Parker
New World Stages - 340 West 50th Street (Between 8th and 9th Aves)

“Any Potter fan visiting New York City absolutely must take in this play.”
–Hypable

“Leviosa yourselves to the new Off-Broadway hit, Puffs!”
–Edge Media Network

The hit Off-Broadway show already enjoyed by over 20,000 people just got a little bit more

Off-Broadway-er. Puffs transfers to a new production at New World Stages this summer.

For seven years a certain boy wizard went to Wizard School. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs… who just happened to be there too. A play for anyone who has never been destined to save the world. “An alternative narrative for the underdog” (Wall Street Journal).

Puffs, or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic & Magic is a Potter inspired comedy for anyone who has ever felt like a secondary character in someone else’s story. The play that “never goes more than a minute without a laugh” (Nerdist) gives you a new look at a familiar adventure from the perspective of three new heroes just trying to make it through magic school. Alongside them are the Puffs, a group of well-meaning, loyal rejects with a thing for badgers "who are so lovable and relatable, you’ll leave the theater wishing they were in the stories all along” (Hollywood Life). Their “hilariously heartfelt!” (Metro) and epic journey takes the classic story to new places and reimagines what a boy wizard hero can be.

“Buy a ticket immediately. I can promise you won’t regret it.” –MuggleNet

As a special treat for parents and families, all matinee performances are appropriate for young wizards from ages 8 and up.

Radio Theater Project Submissions

web site

The Radio Theatre Project accepts submissions of original scripts where the story depends on dialogue instead of visuals.

The beauty of radio theater is that it’s voices, and it’s storytelling.

Radio plays can be startlingly intimate – the thoughts inside somebody’s head. Or as wide-ranging as the universe, a story way too big for a stage. It’s easy and inexpensive to go to Mars on the radio, or converse with a dragon or your dog – this is theatre your audience builds with you, and each person designs the set and casts the characters in their imagination.

That said, we tend toward new work and only rarely do old-timey scripts. We welcome writers who have radio in mind, and writers willing to reshape scripts that have had a life onstage or screen.

If you’re adapting a work from another medium, remember that audio is a different animal. What got you screams and cheers onstage may need to be rethought if it’s delivered without visuals.

Selected plays are performed for a standing-room only crowd in downtown St. Pete, with professional actors on book and a sound effects artist. Recordings are distributed via podcast and writers receive a stipend of $50 when the script is performed.

Short plays are very welcome. Full-length plays will need to be condensed to one hour with an intermission.

Stage plays can be submitted as-is for consideration, though if selected some adaptation may be necessary.

This is an ongoing opportunity.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR RTP SCRIPTS
  • Plays should have a running time of 50 minutes or less. Brevity is the soul of.
  • Plays longer than 30 minutes will need to be able to be split in two parts with an intermission.
  • Plays that originated as stage, film or prose are fine, but we produce radio theater – works originating in other forms will need to be adapted for radio.
  • The Radio Theatre Project reserves the right to make any edits necessary for length, clarity or FCC regulations. We’ll suggest those to you, if your script is being considered for production.
  • Florida writers and plays with Florida settings and subject matter are always welcome.
Send plays for consideration to Jim Wicker, Literary Manager, at jimwicker.actor@gmail.com.

REQUIREMENTS
Please include a cover sheet with title, name of author and contact information.
On the second page, please include a plot summary and brief bio of the author.
Please submit scripts in 12-point type with page numbers in the upper right-hand corner.
Think about sound and sound effects.
The scripts will be broadcast, so FCC language restrictions apply—no seven deadly words, obscenity, overt sex or graphic bodily functions.

Before your script is produced, you will need to put it into radio play format – see guidelines here.

TIPS
Any action must be made clear by dialogue and sound effects.
Characters should be identified frequently by name, and there can’t be too many characters in the same scene. If characters aren’t part of the conversation, they disappear.
Be judicious in your use of narration and monologue, or avoid them altogether. Dialogue is more engaging.

INGRAM NEW WORKS LAB

web site

The Ingram New Works Project was launched by Nashville Repertory Theatre in 2009 thanks to the generous support of Martha Ingram. With the mission to support the creation of new works for the theatre, Nashville Rep created a project that includes the New Works Lab.

The Ingram New Works Lab is intended to be an artistic home for early career playwrights to share and develop new work, hone craft, receive support, and springboard themselves into the next phase of their writing career.

Nashville Rep seeks committed playwrights for residency in the 2017-2018 Ingram New Works Lab. Submission deadline is July 24, 2017.

THE INGRAM NEW WORKS LAB

The Ingram New Works Lab is an artistic home for playwrights and a fertile environment for the creation of great new plays. During monthly Lab meetings in Nashville, playwrights share and develop a new work and receive transformative support and project guidance from dedicated staff.

In addition to the monthly meetings, each playwright will participate in Playwrights Week January 13-19, 2018, developing their play under the guidance of the 2017/18 Ingram New Works Fellow.

During their 2017/18 residency, each playwright will be expected to work toward the creation of a new play that will be presented in a staged reading featured at the Ingram New Works Festival in May 9-19, 2018.

The Ingram New Works Lab is a generative residency in which selected playwrights will create a new work for the theatre. Nashville Rep will serve and support selected playwrights as they work to develop their play from the idea stage to a muscular full draft. Nashville Rep will provide the playwrights-in-residence:
A season-long playwright-led script lab that meets once a month in Nashville
A supportive environment to foster and support the playwright’s process
Access to professional actors
Workshop sessions involving professional directors, designers, and dramaturgs
Access to professional marketing and audience development resources
A week-long development lab with the Ingram New Works Fellow
A staged reading presented as part of the Ingram New Works Festival
Housing during residency dates in Nashville
Travel reimbursement for each trip to Nashville
A small stipend to defray additional expenses

PARTICIPATION IN MONTHLY SCRIPT LAB

The New Works Lab will meet once a month to provide playwrights-in-residence with a supportive but disciplined environment to workshop their scripts. Every playwright will have the opportunity to hear multiple drafts of their script read aloud by actors and receive feedback from their fellow playwrights. The lab will provide the opportunity for playwrights to shape, mold, and develop as many drafts as they feel necessary before festival rehearsals begin.

Lab Meeting dates: October 20-21, 2017; November 17-18, 2017; December 15-16, 2017; February 16-17, 2018; March 16-17, 2018; April TBA

PLAYWRIGHTS WEEK WITH NEW WORKS FELLOW

Playwrights-in-residence will participate in a week-long New Works Lab with the recipient of the Ingram New Works Fellowship, a nationally recognized playwright. Lab playwrights should be prepared to clear their schedule for the entirety of the week.

Playwrights Week: January 13-19, 2018
PARTICIPATION IN INGRAM NEW WORKS FESTIVAL

Work in the Lab will be focused on goals established by the Lab Playwrights. However, each playwright will be expected to work toward the creation of a new play that will be presented in a staged reading at the New Works Festival. Please note the following criteria for New Works festival plays being developed in the lab:
Full-length plays (prefer 80-120 mins. running time)
Plays that utilize no more than 8 actors
Plays that have not previously been produced by any professional company

Ingram New Works Festival dates: May 9-19, 2018.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES FOR THE INGRAM NEW WORKS LAB

Nashville Rep will award up to three residencies in the New Works Lab. Each playwright who accepts the residency will commit to developing a new play from its earliest stages to a full draft, participating in monthly Lab meetings, participation in the New Works symposium week, rehearsals for the New Works Festival, and assisting with the New Works Festival in May 2018 as auxiliary artistic staff.

All playwrights who accept a residency must commit to be available for all lab, playwrights week, rehearsal and festival dates:

October 20-21, 2017; November 17-18, 2017; December 15-16, 2017; January 13-19, 2018; February 16-17, 2018; March 16-17, 2018; April TBA; May 9-19, 2018

Should a playwright-in-residence miss multiple commitments, they may be asked to forgo their place in the New Works Lab.

All applications must include the following material:
  • A letter stating your objectives for working on a new play in the Ingram New Works Lab at Nashville Rep. You must include a description of your proposed play.
  • One Page Bio with history as a playwright.
  • A play that best represents your writing skill. Full-length is preferred, but a substantial one-act play (minimum of one hour running time) will be acceptable for this application. Author and contact information must appear on the title page. Please do not submit musicals, screenplays, TV scripts, or children’s theatre.

Narratively submission guidelines

web site

Most of what we publish comes from freelance submissions and pitches, so if you've got a great, untold, character-driven story, we want to hear from you!

What we're looking for:
-As you may have guessed from our name, we like stories with a narrative; stories where something actually happens.
-That means active, engaging scenes described vividly.
-The human element: Narratively stories always focus on either one incredible character, or a group of incredible characters. If you want to write about a phenomenon, find the person or group of people who embody it. Most of our stories can be described with the phrase "ordinary people doing extraordinary things."
-Something new: check to make sure your story hasn't already been covered, we want to uncover untold stories, not rehash old ones. We love stories that show unique access to people and places often unseen and unheard in traditional outlets.
- We publish pieces from all over the world and are interested in untold human stories, regardless of location.

What we're NOT looking for:
-Think pieces or op-eds. While your story should engage with big, interesting ideas, it should do so through scenes and narrative.
-Diary entries. We love solid first-person narratives, but, just like our reported pieces, they need to bring something new, exciting, maybe even shocking to the table. Anecdotes from your life, no matter how heartbreaking/hilarious/odd, aren't enough to make a good memoir piece, they need to illuminate some bigger idea, to teach the reader something about what it's like to be you, and what it's like to be human.
-Anything written in a second-person or letter format
-Stories about your time in the Peace Corps or your experience using Tinder. Memoir pieces should be extraordinary stories only you can tell, not your take on a common story.
-Profiles of your friends or colleagues. Reported stories should not focus on anyone with whom you have a personal or business relationship.
-Stories about alien abductions, demonic possessions, or ghosts. Your story should be fact-check proof.
-Fiction or poetry. No matter how great it is. We only publish non-fiction stories.

Themes: In addition to current, rotating themes (which can be found on the category submission pages), here are a few themes/series for which we’re always looking for stories:

Ordinary Obituaries: Some of the best narrative journalism out there shows up in the obit section of publications like the New York Times. But why should only the rich and famous have their full life stories told? This series is all stories of recently deceased ordinary people--those who perhaps had a two-line obit in a local paper--but whose lives deserve a full-length treatment. (Past examples include: A Gitmo Defense Attorney Who Refused to Toe the Line and The Man Who Elevated the Art World.)

Humans Behind the Headlines: Stories that go behind the scenes and below the surface of big, current news stories. These can be national stories or local stories with a universal appeal, but since this is still Narratively, they need to be brand new, untold, and human-driven. (Past examples include: Faces of Ferguson, Inside ISIS: The Making of a Radical, and That Time the Internet Sent a SWAT Team to My Mom’s House.)

The Naked Truth: Revelations about sex, sexuality or gender that expose a larger truth about all of us. Profile or memoir. (Past examples include: Sexless in the City, When a Father’s Son Becomes His Daughter, and I’m a Straight Man and He’s My New Sugar Daddy.)

Secret Lives: The people who make things happen behind the scenes. We want detailed accounts of the jobs you never think about. These pieces are quirky, informative, unexpected. They can be profile or memoir. (Past examples include: Secret Life of a Crime Scene Cleaner, Secret Life of a Telemarketing Peon, Secret Life of a Ghost Hunter.)

We will also always consider a good story idea regardless of theme. So don't wait around until you see a theme that fits, pitch away!

Urban Stages: Words by Women

web site

Due: August 31, 2017
Only a small fraction of new plays produced every year are written by women. To encourage the development and production of plays by women, we put out a special call for our Words by Women Reading Series periodically. NBYT’s Short Play Festival

web site

We’ve produced a collection of short plays before (Comic Shorts, April 2013) but this time we’re inviting aspiring playwrights of any age to submit scripts, and we’re inviting aspiring directors age 12 to 18 to direct. Teens are also welcome to be involved as designers, stage managers, or producers. Don’t have any experience as a director or in any of these other roles? Not to worry! Each production will have an NBYT staff member working on it for guidance; in some cases, a staff member may even be directing the production. Auditions for actors will be held in the fall.

PLAYWRIGHTS: Submit your scripts to SPF@nbyt.org or by hand to Executive and Artistic Director Darren Farrington by July 31, 2017.

To be considered for production, all play submissions must follow these guidelines:
  1. Plays may be written by one or more people, but all contributing writers’ names must be credited.
  2. No person may submit more than three scripts for consideration.
  3. Plays may be original works or adaptations. Adaptations must be based on works in the public domain or permission of the author of the underlying work must be obtained and proven.
  4. Plays must be no more than twenty (20) pages and must be typed in 12-point size of a standard font with one-inch margins on all sides of each page. A character list must be included at the beginning of the play, along with any notes on possible double casting and the setting. Pages must be numbered. There is no minimum length for submissions.
  5. Plays must be suitable for either all ages or middle school age and up.
  6. Plays submitted by email must be submitted in Microsoft Word or PDF formats.
  7. Plays must be able to be produced with minimal design elements and no required special effects.
  8. Playwrights must agree to license plays for production by New Britain Youth Theater for up to four (4) performances. No compensation will be paid to playwrights.
  9. If a play cannot be considered for any reason, NBYT will notify writers as soon as possible. If a problem is easily fixable and the play otherwise has merit, writers may be asked for revisions.
  10. Early submissions (before July 31) are permitted and encouraged.

Questions may be directed to NBYT Executive and Artistic Director Darren Farrington at darren@nbyt.org.

What does it mean when your own country sees you as an outsider? France, 2005: Zenab is an aspiring French-Moroccan artist, stuck giving tours of the room where Vincent Van Gogh died. When Vincent’s ghost begins to speak to her, she finds herself torn between her art and Avery, the American woman she’s fallen in love with. Meanwhile, riots explode near Paris after two young men of color are killed in a police chase. Zenab joins the riots, easel in hand, to paint her own version of France—one that digs deeper than the postcard-perfect veneer sold to tourists. Based on the true story of Bouna Traoré, 15 and Zyed Benna, 17, whose deaths inspired weeks of sustained rioting across France.

All NYCPlaywrights are invited to attend at the $15 artist rate. In order to get the artist rate, select a show date and then select the "Artist" drop-down option in the online ticket order form.

Playwrights, please read the following information carefully.
  • Playwrights may submit a maximum of two (2) plays.
  • Scripts will be reviewed blind – submit your script(s) with two (2) title pages – one that includes the playwright’s name and contact info and one with only the script title. Please make sure that the playwright’s name doesn’t appear anywhere else on the script.
  • Scripts written for the stage, only. No screenplays, please.
  • PDF documents preferred.
  • There are no restrictions to the scripts’ subject matter as long as the play features political/social commentary.
  • We will accept un-produced scripts as well as plays that have been previously produced.
  • Plays should not exceed 10 minutes. Scripts should be no longer than 13 pages not including cover page and character descriptions. (Keep in mind, 1 page of dialogue usually equals 1 minute of stage time.)
  • There will be 2 rounds in the script selection process: The 1st round will be headed by company members of Box Wine Theatre. The 2nd round will be based on choices of the directors.
  • Playwrights will not have the option of directing their own pieces. We believe in the collaborative process between the playwright and director and we strongly encourage working together.
  • While all playwrights produced in this festival will be considered for a $250 cash prize for Audience Favorite, please be advised there is no other compensation for scripts.
  • For scripts selected for Raucous Caucus, playwrights will be asked to sign a waiver allowing Box Wine Theatre to photograph and post pictures of the play online including, but not limited to boxwinetheatre.com and on social media; playwrights will have permission to use these photos for any purpose they wish.
To submit your script(s) for Raucous Caucus, fill out the form online.
