Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab

The Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab was founded in 1998 to explore and develop the work of a new generation of theater artists and to foster new collaborations between writers and directors in the beginning stages of the creative process. Writers and directors must apply separately. At the start of the cycle, writers and directors invited to join the Lab are paired with a partner.

Writer Applicants should submit a 10 page writing sample from a full-length play, as well as a short description / synopsis (no more than 250 words) of that full-length play. Applicants should also submit a resume, as well as one reference and contact details for that reference. Second round applicants will be asked to submit the play that the writing sample came from. This play should not be the play you wish to work on in the Lab, as Lab writers will write brand new play. In the late summer, writer finalists will be asked to interview and also to propose an idea for a new play.

Director Applicants should submit a resume, one reference and contact details for that reference, as well as written responses to the following two prompts. Each response should be limited to 250 words.
Tell us about a current “non-theater” artistic obsession of yours (for example, the work of a particular sculptor, the historical idea of conversation as art, etc.). How does this obsession influence, challenge, or otherwise weigh on your work and/or your process as a director.
From your perspective, what are the skills required of a new play director?

Participation includes attendance at all Lab meetings and readings during the 2014/15 cycle. The Lab meets approximately every other week to discuss the plays. In the spring, each play is given a public reading at Soho Rep., directed by the director matched with the play.

Eligibility Writers and directors must be able to attend all Lab meetings and readings at Soho Rep in New York City during the 2014/15 cycle. They may not be full-time students at the start of the Lab. Past participants of the Lab are not eligible to apply.

Application instructions are included on the following page. Applications must be submitted electronically to us on June 1, 2014 by 5pm EST. Second round applicants and finalists will hear from us in the late summer. All other applicants will hear from us in the early fall. The first lab reading will be held on Sunday, October 5, 2014.

Rising Sun Performance Company is looking for short play script submissions for an evening of readings at The West in Williamsburg on July 8th. Submitted plays should be inspired by the theme of "Independence," and be submitted to (playsubmissions@risingsunnyc.com) no later than June 16th

As the purpose of the ongoing reading series is to foment new artistic relationships, these plays must be unpublished and the playwrights must be available to attend the reading event.

1) Entries accepted JUNE 1 through AUGUST 31, 2014

2) Any Kentucky playwright, of any age,-- whether currently living in Kentucky or not may enter the contest one or more times. However, entries must be the original work of the playwright, submitted separately to ky.playwright@yahoo.com and not have been previously been produced.

3) Entries will be judged blind. For EACH play submitted please submit a title page with name and contact information in one attachment and in a second attachment submit the complete script without the name of the playwright anywhere within it. Failure to abide by this rule will result in the disqualification of the script.

4) Plays of any length (full-length, one act or 10-minute) may be submitted. Likewise, they may be either comedy or drama, on any topic. Plays for children and musicals are NOT accepted.

5) Plays must be written in a standard format in 12 font and in either Times New Roman or Courier.

6) Neither an entry fee nor form is required.

7) Plays will undergo two rounds of judging. Semi-finalists will be announced in late September, finalists in late October. The winner will be announced at the Kentucky Theatre Association Conference in November at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, KY.

8) The winner will receive $250 and a plaque. The runners-up will receive plaques recognizing their achievements. Cuttings from each of the three finalist plays will be given readings at the KTA conference.

9) Judges may accept or reject any script for any reason.

10) Decisions of the judges are final.

11) Everyone who submits a script, by virtue of doing so, agrees to accept and abide by these rules.

Lakes Area Theatre script submission guidelines

Lakes Area Theatre (LAT) accepts script submissions from writers. Your original radio plays can be in any genre. Please see below for further guidelines regarding scripts.

Your script must be in a radio play format which differs from stage plays and screenplays. There are no stage directions, visual cues, lighting directions. The scripts should include easily discernible audio cues such as dialogue, sound effects (sfx), and music cues. Number the pages and number the lines starting over with 1 on each page for the lines.

We ask that content be suitable for all ages and family friendly. If you include innuendo and/or adult humor, please keep in mind some “children’s shows” which appealed to adults as well: Rocky and Bullwinkle, Fractured Fairytales, and the like. We broadcast our shows on a growing network of radio stations.

LAT has a 30 minute broadcast space to fill every other week. Plays can be 29-31 minutes in length. Script lengths are in the range of 5000 +/- words.
We will accept scripts for single shows
We will accept scripts that would run for 2 installments
We will accept a series of shorter plays which would fill the time frame

Fame Not Fortune
We pay a royalty fee of $30 per half hour of entertainment. This is based on input from radio script playwrights from around the USA as well as a BBC radio script writer.

Royalty Agreement
If we accept and use your script, we will send you a writer’s agreement. This agreement will grant us the right to produce the script; it will grant us the right to reproduce as many copies of the script as needed to produce the script; it will grant us the broadcasting and rebroadcasting rights to the taped production (radio and podcasts); the writer retains all rights to their original and/or adapted work.

Return Policy
We may not take the opportunity to use your script. There could be a number of reasons for this such as its length, content not deemed suitable for our audience, or just that we believe it needs more work. We will try to give feedback so that writers can edit and resubmit their work.

Accepting applications for the 2014-2015 Harold Clurman Playwright-in-Residence

The Stella Adler Studio of Acting is currently accepting applications for the 2014-2015 Harold Clurman Playwright-in-Residence. This is a collaborative residency that is mutually beneficial to the mission of the studio and the playwright. We are seeking playwrights who:

- are in their early careers
- are unpublished
- have not yet had professional productions other than those using the showcase code
- have a vested interest in working with a community of artists
- are interested in engaging in a discussion about how the studio can support and challenge their work

While this is a merit-based residency search, we are particularly interested in diversity – diverse writers, voices, viewpoints, perspectives. The studio is interested in co-designing a residency with the playwright that will support and challenge their process. The course of the residency is not regimented, but may be described as “playwright’s choice” within the resources and capabilities of the studio. Past participants have chosen some of the following:

1) a series of readings on a play written during the course of the year
2) a series of readings on a variety of plays/pages
3) writing a new work for an ensemble of graduate level actors
4) a showcase production

The resident will engage in a discussion with the Artistic Director and other staff to explore what activities might be most helpful to their process during the year. Residencies typically begin in September and culminate in June. Resident playwrights receive a $1000 stipend and have access to the Studio’s space, members of the Clurman Lab Theatre Company, and student actors for readings and workshops.

Completed applications must include a required application form, a full-length, polished but unpublished play (a full-length play is one that constitutes a full evening of theater; a 90-minute one act play is acceptable); a statement of objectives of no more than a page discussing how you would benefit from a collaborative residency at the studio; and a brief biography emphasizing your history as a playwright. Playwrights must read and agree to the Letter of Agreement before applying. By applying for this residency, playwrights confirm that they have read and agree to the Letter of Agreement.

Your play submission should be “blind”. The cover page should ONLY include the title of your play. This copy will be shared with the committee of play readers who will not know the authors of the plays they are reading.

Completed applications must be received by Friday, May 30, 2014.
Applicants will be considered for the playwright-in-residence position as well as:
- participation in the First Breath New Play Reading Series (Spring 2015)
- participation in the Teen Program Ten-Minute new play program (Summer 2015)

It is that time of year again, and we are looking for short play submissions for our third annual Briefs: A Festival of Short LGBT Plays, which will be held in late winter or early spring 2015 in St Louis. We are looking for plays that are 10-15 minutes in length, that can be done with simple staging/props, and that are LGBT themed.

Smithfield Little Theatre seeks one act submissions for their 8th Annual One Act Play Festival Competition

We invite you and/or your team or cast to perform at Smithfield Little Theatre in Historic Downtown Smithfield, Virginia. Please bring your special creativity to this unique event. The 8th annual SLT ONE ACT PLAY Festival Competition will be held Friday evening, August 1 and Saturday, August 2nd. This is a fantastic opportunity for local playwrights, directors, and actors to showcase talents. The SLT ONE ACT PLAY Festival Competition will be held at the Smithfield Little Theatre located at 210 N. Church Street, Smithfield, VA 23430.

This is a fun-filled thespian competition to award best actor/actress, best director, etc. It is also a great platform for original work as there are otherwise limited opportunities for playwrights to showcase their originals works. This event should appeal to those who want to perform but may be nervous to audition, those who want to direct but have not had the opportunity to do so yet, and those who want to get involved buy have not found the right show. This is really a great opportunity to be guaranteed a chance to participate. And there are fabulous prizes to the successful! There will be $100 prizes for the first place in each of the following categories: Monologue, Vignette, Best Play, and Best Playwright (for original work).

Bring all your questions! We can discuss the competition criteria, timeline, scheduling, submissions, censorship, any question you may have.

There are three competitive categories to be judged/awarded equally.

  • Each entry will have 5 minutes to set up and 5 minutes to tear down the set, which must be portable.
  • Casting is up tot he director - conduct auditions/select your performers
  • Rehearsals can be conducted on your own as the set will have to be portable anyway. It is possible to practice in your back yard.
  • The theater will be reserved for approximately one week prior to the festival so all acts can have at least one technical rehearsal in the theater.

Menagerie is now accepting entries for the One Page Play Competition

Menagerie is now accepting entries for the One Page Play Competition which will take place at this year’s Hotbed, Cambridge’s premier new writing festival.
All entries will be read and the best will be performed by professional actors throughout the Hotbed weekend at Cambridge Junction. We are looking for 24 scripts. Audience members will vote on the best play out of those presented and the winner will receive £100 to donate to a charity of their choice. This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to put their words to the test and get the chance to see their work come to life in a professional theatrical arena.

The one page plays can be about ANY subject from current politics to soap opera relationships. The possibilities are endless. The only RULES are:

  • 1 Page of A4 only (10-12 point text) 
  • No more than 8 actors featured in the play 
  • The duration should be no longer than 4 minutes 

All we need now is some creative writing! To enter, just email your one page play to

Plays may be on any subject and written in any style. Plays MUST be inspired by and include Steampunk themes, images, characters, or plots.

About Steampunk

Must not exceed 30 minutes - shorter works are preferred. Time will be strictly enforced.

Must be an original unpublished work, previously produced work okay.

Will be judged as to style, content, and concept. We are especially interested in comedies that could pair with a short burlesque piece - so adult humor is okay.

Cover page should include title, author’s name, address, telephone number, and email.

Scripts must be typed, double spaced on 8x10 (or A4 for international submissions) white papers. Hand written scripts will not be considered.

4x4=Musicals seeks ALL NEW ten minute musicals written to fit on a 4" by 4" stage. Last year, we decided all the musicals needed to dance- and it resulted in an exciting and challenging program that delighted sold-out audiences. This year, we want to be EPIC. Epic is wildly inclusive- your piece could be epic in scope of story or characters, epic in a period-piece-bodice-ripping way, epic in terms of tonality (an epic rock score), or any other of a million variations we haven't thought of as yet.

Previous premises have included Subway Cars, Elevators, Music Boxes, Life Rafts, Seven Minutes in Heaven, World-Record Phone Booth Occupation, Occupy Portland, Bloodstream of a Dog, Road Trip, and Tech Booths, amongst others. Shows vary in tone, but should always have genuine emotional arcs and characters. They frequently benefit from a premise that includes limitation as a concept of some sort. Writers who are interested in this experience are encouraged to sit in a four-foot square while they think of ideas to avoid many common pitfalls. It's really very little space, depending on how it is used! Do not write in scenic elements and please minimize props, etc. This is a project about talent and invention, not items.

To apply: Email an intent-to-submit with your premise by June 1st. Feedback will be given, mostly for practical purposes. Scripts with demo recordings of songs and vocal scores are due August 1st. Electronic copies are preferred, but hard copies are accepted. Production will take place in January of 2015 as part of the Fertile Ground New Works Festival. Writers receive a modest stipend. No fee to apply.

NEXT ACT! is an expansion of Capital Repertory Theatre’s commitment to the development of new work, and is designed to complement the Upper Hudson Valley’s recent and future growth explosion in the fields of research and technology. The summit will directly reflect the theatre’s mission, “to create meaningful theatre generated from an authentic link to the community.” The NEXT ACT! New Play Summit 3 takes place November 1– 3, 2014 and will feature readings of two never-before produced plays, and special events throughout the weekend.

theREP is particularly interested in scripts that showcase world events as they impact the individual and society, highlighting the common threads that bind the American culture together in a world that is defined more and more by diversity. The theatre will give preference to character driven scripts that showcase technology’s impact on humanity.

Accepting full length plays only.
Multi-cultural and ethnically diverse pieces welcome.

(Please do not submit plays about the theatre.)

March Forth Summer Salon

We here at March Forth love good stories, and without writers… well we don’t have many good stories, now do we? That is why this summer we are providing writers with a chance to have their work read and shared informally in an environment that will promote collaboration, thoughtful feedback and the building of our artistic community.

Every Monday in August we will gather writers, actors, directors and dramaturgs to read a new play along with the playwright. We'll have a glass or two of wine, discuss what we’ve just experienced, and address any questions or concerns the playwright might have. This is a perfect opportunity for early-career writers or seasoned veterans looking for a supportive arena to try out their newest venture!

Summer Salon Guidelines
Full Length, original plays only (no musicals)

Play must be complete at the time of submission. Revisions to submitted scripts are allowed, however incomplete texts will not be considered.

Playwright must be able to attend the Salon (Brooklyn NY) August 4th, 11th, 18th or 25th.

All submissions materials must be provided in PDF format.

Multiple submissions accepted, however only one slot will be awarded per playwright

Preference will be given to plays that stretch the bounds of theatrical storytelling

The Warner International Playwrights Festival recognizes the work of emerging and established playwrights from across the country and around the globe. The Festival gives playwrights a forum for production of their one-act plays that engage and entertain audiences through exploration of the human experience and the human spirit.

We invite playwrights to submit plays via electronic script submissions, in standard Samuel French playwriting format - 12 point font, character name centered or 3.5 inches from left margin, 1” margin all around.

Submissions will be limited to the first 200 scripts received.

MISSION: Since 2000 MetLife Foundation and Repertorio Español joined forces to establish The MetLife Nuestras Voces National Playwriting Competition to discover --our voices --the best Latino plays and bring them to the attention to the American theatre community. These original works relate to Latino culture, history and life in the United States while at the same time reflecting the universality of the human condition.  In 2013 we received a record breaking number of scripts proving once again this outreach effort is important and so very necessary. It has been our privilege to promote and develop new plays, encourage bright new talent by providing this forum. We have produced over 100 readings to date and many plays that have placed within the competition over the years have gone on to have subsequent workshop and full productions at regional theatres across the country!

The Douglas Morrisson Theatre in Hayward is accepting submissions for its third annual Playwrights CageMatch! Our CageMatch is a chance for playwrights to show their stuff in an audience-decided live competition!

Five Playwrights enter but only one will emerge victorious! Grand prize for the chosen script.

We are seeking brief scenes (5-20 minutes) which conform to the limitations of the competition. DMT staff will select the top five submissions. Each of the final scripts will get one rehearsal with the same director and company of actors. On July 13th the five scenes will be performed at a live staged reading event at the Douglas Morrisson Theatre. The audience will vote by token to determine the winner!

Our theme this year is: THE CAFETORIUM CHRONICLES: LOST & FOUND. The setting is a high school cafetorium in Anywhere, USA. Time period is not restricted. Please limit your scenes to no more than four characters. We’re looking for creative and elegant back-stories that incorporate the setting into the scenes. Tone, theme or genre is up to you! Class reunion? Bingo game? Polling place? PTA meeting? Bomb shelter? Inside the cafetorium anything can happen.

Admission to the performance is free, but a token to vote for the winner is $5.

The Ingram New Works Lab

Tennessee Repertory Theatre has been gifted with the funds to support the creation of new works for the theatre, and with this mission Tennessee Rep has created the Ingram New Works Project, which includes the New Works Lab.

The Ingram New Works Lab is intended to be an artistic home for emerging playwrights to share and develop new work, hone craft, receive direction, and springboard themselves into the next phase of their writing career, providing a fertile environment for the emergence of great new plays.

Tennessee Rep seeks committed playwrights for residency in the 2014-2015 Ingram New Works Lab.

Tennessee Rep will serve and support selected playwrights as they work in residence to create new work for the theatre. Tennessee Rep will provide the playwrights-in-residence:
A season-long playwright-run script lab that meets once a month.

Access to professional actors, providing a choice of collaborators amongst theatre artists in Nashville.
Workshop sessions involving professional directors, designers, and dramaturgs.
Access to professional marketing and audience development resources.
A symposium with the Ingram New Works Fellow, a playwright with a national reputation.
Participation in the Ingram New Works Festival, giving the playwrights the opportunity to work with a professional director and actors in rehearsal and hear their script read in front of a live audience.
A supportive environment to foster and support the playwright’s process.
A small stipend to defray expenses.
Monthly Script Lab

The New Works Lab will meet once a month to provide playwrights-in-residence with a supportive but disciplined environment to workshop their scripts. By definition a laboratory is a testing ground inasmuch as it offers opportunities for observation, practice and experimentation. Every playwright will have the opportunity to hear multiple drafts of their script read aloud by actors and receive feedback from their fellow playwrights. The lab will provide the opportunity for playwrights to shape, mold, and develop as many drafts as they feel necessary before festival rehearsals begin.

Collaboration Opportunities

Tennessee Rep will facilitate for playwrights-in-residence opportunities to work with their choice of collaborators from amongst top theatre artists in Nashville. Playwrights-in-residence will have access to Tennessee Rep’s professional staff throughout the season, and will have ongoing opportunities to meet with a director, costume designer, set designer, and dramaturg to explore what it would take to get their script from page to stage. Each playwright will also have the opportunity to consult with marketing and audience development staff to gather ideas about resources available to best promote their new work.

Lab Symposium with Ingram New Works Fellow

Playwrights-in-residence will participate in a week-long New Works Lab symposium with the recipient of the Ingram New Works Fellowship, a nationally recognized playwright. The symposium will take advantage of the New Works Fellow’s experience and skill, focusing on a wide variety of issues related to working as a playwright: everything from how an emerging playwright gets a script produced to how to manage the pitfalls of the development process to specific guidance on the art of playwriting. The New Works Fellow will serve as a mentor to the playwrights-in-residence throughout the season via electronic communication. Lab participants should be prepared to clear their schedule for the entirety of the week-long symposium.

Participation in Ingram New Works Festival

Work in the Lab will be focused on goals established by the Lab Playwrights. However, each playwright will be expected to work toward the creation of a new play that will be presented in a staged reading at the New Works Festival, whether completed or as a work in progress. Please note the following criteria for New Works festival plays being developed in the lab:
Full-length plays (prefer 80-120 mins. running time).
Plays that utilize no more than 8 actors.
Plays that have not previously been produced by any professional company.

Application Guidelines for the Ingram New Works Lab

Tennessee Rep will award up to four residencies in the New Works Lab. Each playwright who accepts the residency will commit to participating in the monthly Lab meeting, the New Works symposium, rehearsals for the New Works Festival, and assisting with the New Works Festival in May 2014 as auxiliary artistic staff. Lab Playwrights will also be invited to participate in Tennessee Rep staff and outreach events. All playwrights who accept a residency must commit to be available for all lab, symposium, rehearsal and festival dates. Should a playwright-in-residence miss multiple commitments, they may be asked to forgo their place in the New Works Lab. Tennessee Rep does not provide monetary compensation for playwrights-in-residence and encourages regional playwrights to consider travel commitments before applying.

All applications should include the following material:
  • A letter stating your objectives for working on a new play in the Ingram New Works Lab at Tennessee Rep. Please include a description of your proposed play.
  • One Page Bio with history as a playwright.
  • One Page Artistic Statement.
  • A play that best represents your writing skill. Full-length is preferred, but a substantial one-act play (minimum of one hour running time) will be acceptable for this application. Seeking plays for THE LAST DAYS OF MANKIND project

The project explores what Kraus’s play The Last Days of Mankind means in Great Britain nowadays. What relevance does this play have in our time and to a British audience? We will look at one of the most influential Austrian plays from a different angle by using it as starting point to enter an intercultural dialogue about the first World War, global conflicts nowadays, and the part the people are playing in them.

Kraus’s play centers around the absurdity of war, the lifes of people who are forced to continue their lives under these morbid circumstances, and the role the media plays. We are interested in thought-provoking plays and are open to all kind of work, which can also be inspired by thoughts such as:

War - absurdity or necessity?
Glorification vs. Vergangenheitsbewältigung: Different perceptions of the war in the UK and Austria.
Propaganda: Which role plays the media in global conflicts nowadays?
From 1914 to 2014: What has changed?

The aim of this project is to encourage intercultural collaboration and to make one of the most important Austrian playwrights known to and accessible for a greater public. We encourage playwrights to use Kraus as inspiration, but also to challenge the play and its relevance nowadays, and to write their very own response, which will lead to an interesting intercultural dialogue.

Criteria for submitted work

  • Plays should have a running time between 60 and 80 minutes.
  • Plays must require a cast NO GREATER THAN 4 (the play can have more characters).
  • Plays must be relevant to our time and Great Britain and should use Kraus's play as inspiration, this can be with regards to content and/or style. However, we are looking for original plays and Kraus's work should be nothing more than an inspiration. 
  • The play can either lead into Kraus's epilogue and use it as its last scene, OR it can be a self-contained play. The running time of 60-80 minutes applies in any case to the ORIGINAL PART OF THE PLAY.
  • Plays must be suitable to be performed in a studio space with an approximate size of the stage of 6.40m x 6.80m.
  • The call is open to writers with any level of experience.

Kīkaha Ka Manu Play Festival seeks plays in the Hawaiian language

The Leeward Theatre on Oahu is sponsoring a Hawaiian Language Playwriting Festival. Our initial CALL FOR ENTRIES starts today (22 May 2014) and end on 5 September 2014 (post marked date).


Stemming from a traditional culture and adapting to a multicultural world, Kīkaha Ka Manu is a call to our audiences and artists to celebrate and share stories from our own back yard that define and challenge the essence and perceptions of who we are as residents and indigenous peoples of Hawaiʻi sharing the future together.

Kīkaha Ka Manu is translated as "The Soaring Bird," it describes how the playwrights will be encouraged to soar with their creativity - but the name also implies audience participation as witnesses, gazing and being inspired by the work on stage. The name was proposed by Kumu Kepa Badis.

  • To promote access to ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi Theatre as an artistic medium for expression.
  • To help all residents of Hawaiʻi feel comfortable in taking ownership of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, an official language of the State of Hawaiʻi..
  • To promote ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi to all peoples of Hawaiʻi. We want to inspire and encourage the next generation to explore what it means to be Hawaiian, and provide a way for non-Hawaiians to engage with the Hawaiian community through the medium of theatre.
  • To ensure the foundation for Hawaiian voices to be heard worldwide.
Contest Rules
  • Plays may be on any subject and written in any style. Works featuring contemporary characters and situations are encouraged.
  • Play must not exceed 30 minutes - shorter works are preferred. Time will be strictly enforced.
  • Playwrights must be 18 years old or older at time of submission.
  • Plays will be judged as to style, content, concept, and use of Hawaiian language. Both the playwright’s use of Hawaiian and the overall “theatricality” of the piece will be judged.
  • Multiple entries may be submitted by an author.

2015 This Round's On Us - 10 minute plays

Nylon Fusion is accepting new works for our quarterly 2015 This Round's On Us festivals, each of which will focus on certain broad eras of the 20th Century (see below). 

The plays do not necessarily have to be set in these time periods, but they should at least be informed by the social, cultural and/or political happenings of the time. Whether you find inspiration in the movies, music or theater of a particular decade, the major events that formed the historical narrative or which have been ignored by history, or the everyday lives of the people of the bygone days of the not-so-long-ago. While the writer should be concerned with the theme in their submissions, there is no need to be overt and obvious in working them into the script. We will select and arrange the plays so that they work best together. Please, don't send us any 1-2 page plays or anything over 20 pages.

Plays should not be longer than 10 pages and/or minutes. Casts no larger than four and minimal props and costumes. Sorry, no musicals. The premise is up to you, but all plays must be somewhat linked to the theme. Original and never produced works please. Authors agree to permit Nylon Fusion to produce their submitted play if the company wishes to do so. The company is responsible for all aspects of production including selecting a director and casting. The author will retain full copyright and ownership of their play. Participation in the rehearsal process may be requested, therefore residence in the NYC metropolitan area is prefered but not will not be a factor in the selection process. Authors must be available via email/phone. Performances will be in NYC. No pay.

MITF Seeks Short Subjects for July 2014

Dear Friend in the Theatre,

I'm still looking for new one-act plays for the Fifteenth Annual Midtown International Theatre Festival (MITF), taking place from July 14 - Aug. 10 at the Theatre Building, 312 W. 36th St. in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. Details are straightforward:
Dates for the Festival are July 14 - Aug. 10, 2014. (I'm looking for shows to fill out all but the last week.)
Plays should run 25 - 30 minutes, 30-45 minutes, or 45-60 minutes. Better short than long. The plays will be timed at tech and cannot go over.
Scripts should be submitted in standard playscript format.*
Any subject matter okay, including musicals.
All plays must be off-book. There will be no staged readings. We have no interest in shows that require projections or other special effects. Smoke and fire are prohibited.
Production requirements must be minimal: rehearsal cubes, a table or two, some chairs (all provided by the Festival), and your own props and costumes. There is some storage during your run only.
Tickets less than $20. There are no fees. The Festival pays shows half the net, defined as half the receipts from all tickets over 40% of a house.
Festival participants may see their own and other shows for free, seating permitting. Seating is reserved for producers, writers, and directors at their own shows. We honor press comps, by reservation. No comps may be transferred to anyone else. There are no other comps.
We prefer shows to be non-Equity. Equity showcases may be permitted under special circumstances.
The Festival will provide a press agent, marketing support, venue manager, house manager, lighting designer, and box-office manager. You must provide your own board op. (The Festival has a list of available qualified technical staff from which you may draw. They are competent and reasonably priced.)
While the Festival provides the venue and staff, you must provide the production. The Festival will provide discount rehearsal time, during "off-peak" hours, at The Network, 242 W. 36th St. 3rd fl., for $8 an hour.
There will be a tech rehearsal running 2.5 times the running time of your show.
There is no application fee, but there is a $100 participation fee, due on selection and signing of a simple contract.
Most performances will take place from 6 pm to 11 pm weekdays or 11 am to 11 pm weekends.
Each show will receive at least 3 performances, probably all in the same week. Shows that sell the most tickets in advance may receive more performances.
The Festival will provide a program "wrapper": you must provide a program specific to your show. Our staff will insert it into the wrapper for distribution to your patrons.
There will be a juried award ceremony after the Festival. Last year's awards were held in Sept. 2013.

Walden Theatre Seeking Submissions for Its Slant Culture Series

The Slant Culture series presents new works by rising playwrights that feature complex teenage characters.


Walden Theatre, A TCG theatre and  training center for young actors ages 8-18 located in Louisville, Ky. is seeking submissions for our Slant Culture Series. In addition to our regular offerings of shows from Shakespeare to modern American classics, we produce one play a year in this series.The Slant Culture series presents new works by rising playwrights that feature complex teenage characters. The name Slant Culture comes from the laboratory practice of tilting a test tube to provide a greater area for growth, and Walden Theatre is using this series to challenge our young actors to approach character development by drawing directly from their own lives and those of their peers.

Since we are a private not-for-profit not affiliated with any school system, Walden is in an unique position to introduce to our students new work that they would not, otherwise have a chance to perform. Adult language and adult situations are something our students encounter every day in their real lives and therefore we believe, if the piece has value, we have a duty to present these pieces as a regular part of our season.

MITF Presents Special July Short Play Lab - Cash Prizes

Dear Friend in the Theatre,

By the time the end-of-season Short Play Lab rolls around (coming up May 31 - June 1), I'm usually ready to call it a year and focus on the next chore, the Midtown International Theatre Festival (MITF). But this year a clever associate suggested we include a Short Play Lab in the MITF, as an extra flavor in that ever-evolving theatrical ragout.

Whether you've thought about doing a short play in New York but have never tried, or if you're a regular at such events around town, please give a thought to producing a show in the July Short Play Lab. Not only do you rub shoulders with your fellow short-playwrights, but you get to be promoted among 50-some other plays of all sorts. (Our audiences number in the thousands.) 

The rules are easy-peasy:
  • Deadline is July 1. Notification will be soon after submission, depending on number of submissions. The sooner you get your script in, the more time you have to prepare. Get that script in pronto! 
  • Unlike other Labs, this one will be performed on Fri. night and Sat. afternoon. 
  • Plays should be 1 - 10 pp. in standard playscript format.* (The shorter the better; shorter plays get priority.) Include a title page, as the first page of the script, with your contact info (preferred means of contact is by email). 
  • Submit scripts in MS-Word. 
  • You produce the play whether or not you live in New York. The SPL provides the theatre. This Lab will take place in the WorkShop Theater Company's Jewel Box, 312 W. 36th St. 4th floor, New York, NY 10018. 
  • Productions must be non-union: no showcases please! (And no Equity waivers, either.) 
  • Keep production values to a minimum: costumes and hand props are okay. We provide rehearsal cubes, chairs, and a table. You can't leave your stuff in the theatre overnight. 
  • We provide a board op, box office, and venue management. 
  • There are no fees. The SPL keeps the door. 
  • Tickets are $20. Each playwright and director gets to watch his/her show for free. There are no other comps. 
  • There will be a tech rehearsal in the daytime on Friday, July 25. 
  • Every play gets 2 performances, 1 on Fri. and 1 on Sat. Each play will be part of 1 of 2 programs: Program A or Program B, but not both. Program A takes place at 7:30 pm Fri. and 4:30 pm Sat. Program B takes place at 9:30 pm Fri. and 2:30 pm Sat. 
  • We don't do staged readings. Be off-book, please! Plays not off-book during tech will be removed from the line-up. 
  • THE MOST POPULAR PRODUCTION IN EACH PROGRAM RECEIVES A CASH PRIZE OF $75. Winners are determined by polling patrons after the performance. We reserve the right to break ties.

The SPL is a lot of fun and a good way to see your work on its feet in a supportive environment. It's also a great way to see actors and directors at work, so you can recruit people for later productions.

Request for Proposals

Stickball Productions seeks a friendly neighborhood fringe theater company (incorporated or existing solely for this project) to produce a 10 minute play prior to a full production, Oct. 7-25, for 9 (nine) performances.

Stickball Productions will present Two Boys Lost, a full length play by Bill Doncaster from October 7 through 25 (Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays) at the Massasoit Elks Lodge, Cambridge, MA. We’re seeking the cooperation of a small or fringe company to do something a bit different – present a short, unrelated play, for early arrivers. The selected company will receive a negotiated percentage of box office receipts.

This is an experiment, born from a love of short plays and a dislike of traditional short play festivals, and a sincere desire to give our audiences something different and unexpected. Once upon a time, every movie was preceded by a short film, a cartoon or newsreel, and audiences enjoyed them and didn’t find it a distraction from the main features. The world of short plays is as fascinating (if not more so) as short stories in prose, and we seek to let new audiences know that “a good show” can be damned quick and expose them to some additional talent around town. What we would like is to open doors at 7:30 p.m., present a fully produced short play (under 10 minutes) at 7:40, with the main feature curtain at 8 p.m.

What we seek:

The main feature is a drama, so we’re inclined to think a comedy will work best, but we’re open-minded on that. The selected company or group will be responsible for all elements for production for 9 performances, including cast, director, props, rehearsal space, playwright royalties etc., and will need to work within an existing lighting plot for the mainstage production (some limited tech time will be available). This offering will be heavily promoted in all publicity about Two Boys Lost, so you will be committed to all 9 performances.

Ideally, the play will be low on set pieces – there will be a table and chairs available – but honestly the best short plays aren’t reliant on elaborate sets.

As a practical matter, this is an “add on” – offered to the audience members who arrive early for an 8 p.m. show. That said, patrons may well be entering DURING this performance, in a venue with a bar IN the performance space, and thus it will be an awesome challenge to command attention. Again, this is an experiment.

Additional obligations of the selected company or group will include sharing your participating of the show through your various social media outlets, i.e. helping to spread the word about the entire production.

Stickball will commit to the following: Highlighting your company’s offering at Two Boys Lost as part of the text in the box office language for ticket busyers (we WANT people there early to see your piece, and will work hard to encourage early arrivers), inclusion in all press releases and on our website about the mainstage production, a profile of your company and the project specifically on our website, and a negotiated percentage of the gross box office receipts. That percentage will be small, as there are fixed and other costs associated with the mainstage production and money’s tight, but Stickball is committed to paying people for their work, even if it’s nowhere near enough.

The selected company may also: Have literature available about upcoming productions available in the venue, affix a poster at the rear of the venue about cast/crew information and upcoming productions, receive a healthy number of comps (concentrated on opening weekend).

A couple of big “No no’s” – we allow no curtain speeches for any reason, before or after the piece, you present, you bow. No fundraising for your company (aside from standard “how to donate” info on literature you have available).

RFP submission process:

We don’t get too hung up on formality here. As a practical matter, we require you’re reasonably local.

A brief letter (under a page) that describes the piece and principle participants, and what you bring to the table in terms of promotions (twitter and facebook followers and the like). We don’t except casting decisions at this early stage, but we DO want to know a bit about the director and other key people who will “get it up” and we do hope to cross pollinate a bit in terms of marketing.

The text of the proposed 10 minute play – we encourage “new and unpublished” and, again YOU are the producer so royalties are your responsibility.

Projected fee and breakdown – Our plan is a box percentage, and we believe in paying people. That said, we’re on a limited budget with venue and lighting rentals, cast and crew for the main stage, and resources for this are really non-existent. In essence, we’ll be adding an amount to the ticket price to make this happen, and we’re as relentless as everyone else in seeking to keep ticket prices low.

Undiscovered Voices Scholarship 2014

The Writer’s Center seeks promising writers in the Washington area earning less than $25,000 annually to apply. This scholarship program will provide complimentary writing workshops to the selected applicant for a period of one year, but not to exceed 8 workshops in that year (and not to include independent studies). We expect the recipient will use the year to make progress toward a completed manuscript of publishable work.

The Writer’s Center believes writers of all backgrounds and experiences should have an opportunity to devote time and energy toward the perfection of their craft.

The recipient will be able to attend writing workshops offered by The Writer’s Center free of charge. In addition, he or she will give a reading from his or her work after the close of the scholarship period (June 2014) and will be invited to join our community in ways most intereting to them.

To apply, candidates should submit:

a) a cover letter signed by the candidate that contains the statement: “I understand and confirm I meet all eligibility requirements of the Undiscovered Voices Scholarship.” The cover letter should include information on the impact this scholarship would have on the candidate.

b) contact information for two references who can speak to the candidate’s creative work and promise

c) a work sample in a single genre:
  • 8 pages of poetry, no more than one poem per page
  • 10 pages of fiction, double-spaced, no more than one work or excerpt
  • 10 pages of nonfiction (essay, memoir, etc), double-spaced, no more than one work or excerpt

History Theatre (St. Paul, Minnesota) is accepting proposals and/or completed scripts for our Raw Stages New Works Festival in January 2015.   

The Raw Stages New Works Festival is an opportunity for playwrights to workshop a script with a team of professional artists and receive audience feedback at a public reading. 

History Theatre focuses on TRUE stories which have a connection to Minnesota or the Midwest (we do not produce historical fiction).  Playwrights may submit an idea for a script (which has yet to be written) OR an already-completed script. 

One or two entries will be selected for the festival.  Playwrights will be awarded $1,500 and at the conclusion of the festival their script may be considered for a full commission and production in History Theatre's mainstage season. 

Playwrights should submit:
-       One-page treatment which includes plot synopsis, cast of characters, and a statement of why you believe the play would fit History Theatre's mission.  
-       Ten-page writing sample from previous dramatic work (or from the completed script being submitted.)

Treatment submission deadline: June 1, 2014
Playwrights will be notified by July 1st if their treatment is selected and will have until Dec. 15th to submit a first draft.  The Raw Stages workshop and reading will take place in the first three weeks of January 2015.

MTWorks’ NewBorn Festival sponsored by the Pyschology Club and Department of the City College of New York is our annual full-length playwriting competition and reading series. We celebrate today’s innovative playwrights that boldly take risks in theme, structure, time-period, location and diversity (ethnic, economic, geographic, gender, sexuality or creed). MTWorks’ mainstage productions are selected from the NewBorn Festival winners.

Finalists automatically enter The Living Room Series, a private cold-read performed by our exceptional MTWorkers.

The winning playwrights will be awarded:
  • One full reading of their work in a festival environment.
  • Assigned professional director and cast to work on their play.
  • “Playwright Spotlight” Newsletter received by over 3,000 members of the NY Theatre Industry.

The Civilians R&D Group 2014-2015 Application

The Civilians' R&D Group meets biweekly for nine months, during which time each artist or team of artists develops a new piece of theater through a creative investigation of a topic chosen by each artist. The creative process may include interviewing, community engagement, research, or other experimental methods of inquiry. Led by Artistic Director Steve Cosson and R&D Coordinator EllaRose Chary, the artists share and discuss their methodologies and the resulting work.

Please Read These Directions Carefully BEFORE Completing the Application. Note: this application cannot be saved.

The Civilians R&D Group is comprised of theater artists from various disciplines (writers, directors, composers, etc.) interested in exploring different strategies for making investigative theater and being a part of The Civilians' community of artists.

We define "investigative theater" broadly, meaning any creative process of inquiry that feeds the creation of a work of theater. Methods may include research, a community-based focus, interviews, company-devised strategies, or other experimental strategies of the artist's design. The artists meet on a regular basis for nine months to share and discuss their methodologies and the resulting work with the group, R&D Coordinator EllaRose Chary, and Artistic Director Steve Cosson. The generative artists in the group (writers, composers, writer/actor, writer/director, etc.) are expected to attend all of the sessions; regular attendance is critical and should be considered when applying.

Additionally, a group of directors are chosen to complete the group. Directors are invited to meetings, but not expected to attend all; the directors become more active at the end of the season, with the direction of the public readings.

The intention of the group is that each writer will finish a draft for public presentation by May 2015. Given the nature of the process, it is understood that these drafts will be in various stages of development when they are presented.

8 x 10: A Festival of 10 Minute Plays

Returning for its third year is Lucky Penny's festival of new short plays. This years production will run January 16 - February 1, 2015, with eight original, unproduced ten-minute plays to be presented.

Scripts are now being accepted. Both plays and musicals will be considered. All scripts must be new, unproduced works. Minimalism in technical demands and staging is essential. Four characters or less, please. The author whose play is voted the “People’s Choice” will received a $100 honorarium.

Submission deadline: Must be postmarked by May 31, 2014
Evaluation period: June 1-June 30, 2014
Authors notified and selections announced: By July 15, 2014
Selection of director(s) and casts: By Oct 1, 2014
Rehearsal period: October 2014-January 2015
Performance dates: January 16-Feb 1, 2015 (3 weekends)


1. Submissions must be original, unpublished, unproduced 10-minute plays. Authors should write for an adult audience. Comedy and drama, both musical and non-musical will be considered. Musical submissions must include sheet music/score as needed. Legal clearance of materials not in the public domain is the full responsibility of the submitting playwright.
2. Scripts and related materials must be postmarked by May 31, 2014.
3. Sets, lighting needs and other technical requirements must be minimal. Since the winning plays will be produced, no play considered technically un-producible will be considered.
4. Maximum number of characters per play is four.
5. Running time is to be 10 minutes or less, which may mean 6-10 pages depending upon the density of dialogue. Authors are responsible for submitting work that is within the 10 minute running time limit. Cuts will be requested of the playwright for any selected play which runs over the limit regardless of the number of pages in the script.
6. Plays must be typed/word-processed, with pages numbered, and stapled. Do not use binders or covers.
7. Plays must be presented in proper script format. Please use a 12-point font. If you are not familiar with standard play script format, please learn more.
8. No electronic submissions will be allowed.
9. All submissions are judged blind and this requires two types of cover pages. One, a separate cover letter, will include your name, address, phone number, e-mail and the play title. The other will be on each copy, but only showing the title. There can be no identifying information on the script other than the title. Do not include the author’s name on every page.
10. There is no limit to number of plays that an individual may submit, but each play must be accompanied by the $15 submission fee and only one play per author may be chosen. Submission fees will be used to cover production costs.
a. Special note on submission fee: Lucky Penny Productions and Napa Valley Playhouse empathize with writers who object to submission fees for events of this type. Our intent in requesting the submission fee is to fund the productions of these new works and support our theater company. However, if you are opposed to submission fees on principle or cannot afford the fee, please include a note to that effect with your submission and it will be accepted with a fee waiver.
11. Scripts cannot be returned. Lucky Penny Productions assumes no responsibility for lost or damaged scripts.
12. The eight best plays will be selected from all entries. Notification to authors will be made by July 15, 2014. The eight selected plays will be staged in January 2015 in Napa for “8 x 10: A Festival of 10 Minute Plays.”

The selection of directors, actors and designers for the selected plays is at the sole discretion of Lucky Penny Productions. An author may participate in the process if participation is requested by the producing companies or the director selected for the project.

Entry of a script into this festival grants to Lucky Penny Productions and Napa Valley Playhouse the right to produce the entered play only for this specific event in January 2015 and authors retain all rights to their work for future production or publication.
The producing companies reserve the right to remove and/or replace any play selected by the reading committee if, once in rehearsal, the play is found to be unproduceable as determined by the festival coordinator. Selection of a replacement play is at the sole discretion of the producing companies.
The producing companies reserve the right to reschedule or cancel the festival at their discretion if conditions beyond their control require it. In the event of a cancellation, author’s submission fees will be refunded.
Authors, if their play is selected for production, grant to Lucky Penny Productions the right to use their name, biographical information and photo for purposes of publicity and marketing during the period July 15, 2014 through the performances dates.
Submission of a script to this competition signifies the acceptance of these waivers and conditions.

Stagelight Magazine seeks submissions

Seeking submissions 300-600 words in length on any theater topic, ideally with a focus on New York City theater. Pieces can be editorial in nature or more ‘straight news’. Stagelight is looking to feature writers offering fresh perspectives on the New York theater scene. Possible topics can include upcoming or current shows, breaking theater news, behind-the-scene looks, artist interviews, etc. Stagelight is aimed at readers of all levels of theatrical involvement – from the average New York theatergoer, to those in the industry, to tourists visiting New York for the first time.

Stagelight Magazine reaches over 20,000 readers each month. Stagelight has a strong interest in finding writers to work with the magazine in an ongoing capacity, however, one-time submissions are also welcome.

Short Play Festival seeks 10-minute plays

The 1st and 2nd of June the 92Y Resident Artists is going to hold a Short Play Festival. This a collaborative project that invites writers, actors, directors and musicians to put their craft together in order to create a unique performance. The deadline for the submission of the short plays is Sunday 18th of May at 6pm.

Guidelines for writers:

We are looking for good short plays of:

- 10 minutes at most
- with 2 to 3 characters
- set in a context in which (at least) one of them must be WAITING for something.
- minimal props and scene changes
- each writer can submit more than one play
- the plays do not have to be necessarily unproduced.
- we will only accept electronic submissions (pdf or word)

We will be selecting 6 to 12 plays to be performed in the festival. Moreover, this is a blind submission process, so please include TWO attachments in your submission e-mail:

1- A blind copy of the script with only the title of the play and the script itself.
2- A document including the playwright’s bio, contact information, and the title of the play.

Moss Hart's passion for the stage took him from the slums of the Bronx to the heart of the Great White Way. His autobiography, ACT ONE, is the ultimate showbiz story, and now it's a critically acclaimed play.

If you're a budding playwright, Lincoln Center Theater is offering you a chance to have your own Moss Hart moment. One talented writer will have his or her script read by Producing Artistic Director André Bishop, and will receive an evaluation of their work. The winner will also receive a pair of tickets to see ACT ONE at the Vivian Beaumont Theater and a copy of the Moss Hart memoir.

To enter, send a one-paragraph synopsis of your play (no longer than 200 words each), along with a one-page dialogue sample by May 16, 2014 to ActOneContest@lct.org.

The winning playwright will be announced on May 30, after which they will be invited to submit the complete play for Mr. Bishop to read.
