Women Playwrights International is now accepting submissions from playwrights who want their original work to be part of the next WPI conference. The conference will be held in July 2015 in Cape Town, South Africa.

Women playwrights are requested to submit plays on the following themes:

  • Beyond Words: Plays that script the physical, the visual, the digital or the aural - new texts for new mediums
  • In Other Words: Plays that are multilingual, for multilingual audiences, or have been trans- lated into English from their original language
  • Choice of Words: Scripts that have been de- veloped with actors, directors, co-writers or dramaturgs as part of a workshop or devised process
  • Our Own Words: Plays written for the writer themselves to perform, plays exploring auto- biography or memoir


  • Submission is open to professional, semi- professional or beginning women playwrights from any part of the world, of any age.
  • The script can be unproduced or previously produced (please do not submit plays for which you do not own copyright).
  • One acts as well as full length plays will be accepted. Musicals will be accepted within reason and selection will be resource dependent.


For the first round of submission, please submit the following via the online form:

  • An 80 word synopsis of your play
  • A 50 word motivation detailing how and why it fits one of the WPI 2015 themes
  • A 50 word biography of the playwright - Your country of residence
  • A brief production/development history of the submitted play (if applicable).

Please note

  • Your synopsis must be in English, and your full script should be 75% English, or translated into English
  • Your play must have a maximum of 8 characters
  • Deadline for submissions: 1 December 2013 - Please only submit scripts which are already written, or will be completed by March 2014

The shortlist will be announced in April 2014. Selected applicants will be invited via email to submit the full script within 2 weeks.

The final line-up will be announced in July 2014.

Translation & selection

While we are seeking ways to offer translation services, we are currently unable to do so for the first submission round.

The mandate for the conference will be to select 20% South African playwrights, 20% playwrights from the rest of Africa, and 60% playwrights from the rest of the world.

Last Call for Scripts for Dec. 21 - 22 Short Play Lab

Dear Friend in the Theatre,

We had a great time at the November Short Play Lab, but the December Lab is still short of submissions (Dec. 21 - 22). It's not too late to submit a short play. New participants are welcome! Whether you've thought about doing a short play in New York but have never tried, or if you're a regular at such events around town, please give a thought to producing a show in the upcoming Short Play Lab. The rules are easy-peasy:
  • Deadline is Dec. 11. Notification will be soon after submission, depending on number of submissions. The sooner you get your script in, the more time you have to prepare. Get that script in pronto!
  • Plays should be 1 - 10 pp. in standard playscript format.* (The shorter the better; shorter plays get priority.) Include a title page, as the first page of the script, with your contact info (preferred means of contact is by email).   
  • Submit scripts in MS-Word.
  • You produce the play whether or not you live in New York.  The SPL provides the theatre (at the Roy Arias Studios, 300 West 43rd Street, NYC).   
  • Productions must be non-union: no showcases please! (And no Equity waivers, either.)
  • Keep production values to a minimum: costumes and hand props are okay. We provide rehearsal cubes, chairs, and a table. You can't leave your stuff in the theatre overnight. 
  • We provide a board op, box office, and venue management.
  • There are no fees. The SPL keeps the door.
  • Tickets are $20. Each playwright and director gets to watch his/her show for free. There are no other comps.
  • There will be a tech rehearsal in the daytime on Dec. 21.  
  • Every play gets 2 performances, 1 on Sat. and 1 on Sun. Each play will be part of 1 of 2 programs: Program A or Program B, but not both. Program A takes place at 7 pm Sat. and 4 pm Sun. Program B takes place at 9 pm Sat. and 2 pm Sun.  
  • We don't do staged readings. Be off-book, please! Plays not off-book during tech will be removed from the line-up.
  • THE MOST POPULAR PRODUCTION IN EACH PROGRAM RECEIVES A CASH PRIZE OF $75. Winners are determined by polling patrons at the box office.
*12 pt Times Roman; character names in the middle on their own line; line spaces between speeches and between speeches and stage directions; indented stage directions.   

The SPL is a lot of fun and a good way to see your work on its feet in a supportive environment. It's also a great way to see actors and directors at work, so you can recruit people for later productions.

NYCPlaywrights January 2014 Play of the Month

NYCPlaywrights is seeking one-page monologues for its January 2014 Play of the Month.

The theme: I want something from you.

The speaker and the addressee of the monologue can be any age, gender, ethnicity, etc. and the something that is wanted can be anything, but the monologue must express the theme of "I want something from you."
NOTE: The theme is I want something from YOU.  The theme is not "she wants something from me" or "he wants something from them" etc. The monologue must be addressed TO the entity from whom the monologue speaker wants something.
Monologues that don't meet the theme will be discarded.

The deadline is Sunday, December 29, 2013 at 11:59 PM EST.

We will select one monologue and video-record it, and the video will be posted (with author permission) to the NYCPlaywrights web site.


  • Send only one monologue per author to info@nycplaywrights.org
  • The monologue can be no longer than 1 page. Yes, it's a challenge. Choose your words carefully. Edit and re-edit.
  • The script must be submitted by the author of the script, no agents or others may submit. 
  • The script submission should be sent by email, with the monologue itself as a file attached to the email. File format should be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) or pdf. Most preferable is .pdf (Portable Document Format) because it will retain your original script formatting. 
  • Make sure you have your name and your email address on the script. 
  • Monologues can be submitted by anybody, anywhere in the world, but must be primarily in English (a few non-English phrases are acceptable, but the phrases must include English translations in production notes or stage directions.) 
  • There is no fee for submission. 
  • The author of the selected monologue will be awarded $20. 
  • The NYCPlaywrights selection decision is final and NYCPlaywrights reserves the right to select no monologues from those submitted. 
  • A monologue that has had a production is acceptable, although we prefer a new monologue written for this project. 
  • A monologue that has been published is not acceptable.
  • All rights will remain with the playwright. 
  • The selected monologue will be video-recorded and posted during January - February 2014.
  • The video recording of the monologue will be posted to the NYCPlaywrights YouTube account and from there embedded into the NYCPlaywrights blog. The playwright will be asked to review the video recording and approve it before it is made public.

The Theater Project Soliciting Short Plays for Competition

The Theater Project of Maplewood, NJ, an award-winning, professional theater, is now soliciting short plays for “Fast Forward,” its first short play competition February 14-16, 2014. The contest is open to playwrights in the New Jersey-New York area.


WHO WE ARE: The Theater Project, a professional theater company based in Maplewood, NJ, began in 1994 with the goal of bringing the best contemporary plays to our community.

HOW TO SUBMIT: Electronic submissions only. E-mail your short play to OneActFest@TheTheaterProject.org. Include in the Subject line: “Submission + The Title of Your Play.”

WHAT TO SUBMIT: Plays can be either dramas or comedies but must be no more than 15 minutes running time. This restriction is absolute and plays that exceed 15 minutes will not be considered. Sets, lighting and sound requirements must be simple. No elaborate props or effects. Plays invited to participate must be ready-to-perform and supply their own actors and directors. There is no charge to submit.

Those selected for participation will be charged a $200 fee to cover expenses (venue, stage manager, lighting/sound director)

WHAT WE SUPPLY: The Theater Project will supply the venue (The Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts in Maplewood, NJ), a stage manager and a lighting/sound director.

JUDGES:  Plays in the opening rounds (Feb. 14 and 15) advance to the finals (Feb. 16) by audience vote. A panel of judges will award the “Critics Choice” award and there will also be an “Audience Choice” award.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU: The Theater Project will publicize the festival and the “Critics Choice” winner will receive a $500 prize.

Sundog Theatre in NYC is seeking one-act plays for Scenes from the Staten Island Ferry 2014

Scenes 2014 will consist of alternate endings where our audiences will choose how the voyage will conclude.

This is Sundog Theatre’s 12th annual presentation of original, short one-act plays about our favorite boats, the Staten Island Ferries.

--Submit original plays not previously produced or published, with a signed note affirming that.
--Plays should be 10-25 minutes long and have their setting on the Staten Island Ferry.
--Right before the play ends, one of the actors in your scene will step out of character with a scripted (by you) explanation for the audience lasting no more than 40 seconds that briefly tells of two alternate endings--not revealing any surprises. The audience will then decide which direction the story will go – both endings will have been rehearsed by the actors.
--Plays should involve 2-3 characters and require no special set pieces other than benches or railings found on the Ferry, limited and easily accessible props, and no special sound or lighting requirements.
--Avoid overt and unnecessary sexual/violence situations and language since we cater to a broad audience.
--No musicals, long monologues, poetry, or verse since plays are memorized by actors in a short time.
--As in life, a little humor is good.

Remuneration: Six authors will receive $100 each and be produced in our series of eight March/April 2014 performances in Staten Island and Manhattan.

Live Girls! Theater seeks short plays

We are currently seeking submissions of 10-minute plays written by women for our 15th annual festival of short plays, Quickies.
The deadline for submissions is December 1, 2013.

Quickies is a Live Girls! trademark event and our longest running program. Our 15th installment of this short play event will include 7 short plays by women, as well as feature up and coming local directors and actors. This spring we will be working with the themes of ”Science” & “Magic.” Plays that fit with either or both of these themes in some way are highly encouraged, though not required. Quickies Volume 15 will be performed in association with Theater Off Jackson in April 2014.

New works are encouraged but submissions that have had previous productions outside of Seattle will still be accepted.


  • Please send all submissions to submissions@lgtheater.org
  • Themes for Quickies 15th edition are “Science” & “Magic.” Plays that fit with either or both of these themes in some way are highly encouraged, though not required.
  • Playwrights may submit up to 3 short plays total. They should be close to a 10-minute running time.
  • In the body of your email please introduce yourself; we are always excited about meeting new playwrights! You should also include any previous production history for plays submitted. You may include a bio or resume if you like, but they are not required.
  • Deadline for submissions is Dec 1, 2013. Submissions will receive a reply no later than January 10, 2014.
  • Keep in mind we are a small theater taking the risk to produce new works, and we may not be able accommodate very large casts or long lists of tech requirements.

The Alley is now accepting script submissions for Superhuman: A Festival of New American Superhero Theater!

Wounded Cupid Short Play Fest is now accepting submissions of short plays that deal with Valentine’s Day -- a day that makes people without partners want to fall in love – or kill themselves.  And people WITH partners?  Yeah, them, too.

Here are a few guidelines:

We’re looking for offbeat. A surprise for one or more characters would be awesome. Fill us with wonder! Make us laugh! Short means anywhere from 3 to 20 minutes.
Monologues will be considered.

We are open to period pieces, zombies, sci-fi, ordinary folks, extraordinary creatures, city, country, people of all ages and backgrounds.

TIP:  The “F” word, “B” word etc. are not substitutes for genuinely humorous or emotional language.  Challenge yourself to write creatively without them.  Can’t wait to read these plays!

THEATRE ROULETTE is MadLab’s annual shorts festival.  In its first year, THEATRE ROULETTE began a tradition of an annual shorts festival that has lasted more than 10 years.  The first year was an “invitation-only” festival, from there expanded to taking local submissions to taking submission from across the United States to now, receiving almost 1000 scripts every year from every corner of the world.

To maximize your chance of selection, please read all the guidelines carefully before submitting.

Theatre Roulette is a juried festival.

Submissions must arrive no later than December 1st, 2013.

Submission will be chosen and applicants informed if his/her piece was chosen on January 2nd, 2014.


Scripts should be between 5-30 minutes in length.  Scripts of greater lengths will be considered, but due to time constraints, it is unlikely that unsolicited full-length plays will be selected for the festival, unless you are a Nobel or Pulitzer winning writer, in which case, your script will automatically be accepted for production as long as you waive your standard royalty, which would probably be more than the budget for the entire festival.  If you are not sure whether or not you have won a Nobel or Pulitzer Prize, please find out through the glory of the world wide web and let us know.

MadLab will also be accepting full collections of shorts.  This would be a group of plays that are meant to be performed together and would constitute a complete night of plays.

You may submit multiple scripts.

Script submissions WILL NOT be returned to the applicant; MadLab will destroy all evidence of your creative instincts upon a funeral pyre at an undisclosed location in order to protect both the innocent and the guilty.  Ashes will NOT be returned to you unless you purchase a commemorative urn from MadLab at the bargain basement price of $999.95.

Due to our environmentally conscious president, you must email your script to us.  If emailing is absolutely impossible for you, please call us at 614.221.5418 so we can make alternate arrangements.

Project Y Theatre Company: Project Y Playwrights Group

Project Y Theatre Company (www.projectytheatre.org), which most recently produced the world premiere of A User’s Guide to Hell, Featuring Bernard Madoff by Lee Blessing, is currently accepting applications for the Project Y Playwrights Group.

Starting in January 2014, a selected group of emerging and professional playwrights will meet twice a month to share and discuss work and develop their plays with peer support.  The Playwrights Group will serve as an artistic community, a sounding board for ideas, and a way to build lasting relationships with playwrights and other Project Y artists.  Playwrights will also be considered for Project Y readings and
productions, and will collaborate on ten-minute play festivals and other projects.

Eden Prairie Players is accepting submissions of unpublished one act plays for its 2014 Collection of One Acts to be produced in the fall of 2014.

Submission Guidelines

1. This year we are allowing only one submission per playwright.

2. Unpublished one-act plays: dramas, comedies, etc. (previously-produced or stage readings OK)

3. Length 45 minutes or under (we typically select most in the 10-30 minute range)

4. Submit play as a single computer file (PDF strongly preferred) – hard copies NOT accepted

5. Submit through the online submission form.
a. Playwright contact information - name, email, address, phone.
b. Name of play.
c. Approximate duration.
d. List of characters / descriptions: age, gender, race, etc. (please list allowable deviations)
e. Short synopsis of the play, including a description of recommended set pieces and props
6. After form is submitted, you will receive an email from ep.players.lists@gmail.com with instructions for submitting the file as an email attachment. If you do not see this in your inbox shortly after submitting, you should check your Junk Mail folder. If you use a whitelist tool to prevent spam, please add this address to your whitelist. We cannot guarantee that we will follow up on bounced emails. 

7. Plays will be reviewed on a first come-first served basis, and we reserve the right to limit consideration to an arbitrary number of plays.


  • Selected plays will be paid a royalty of $15 per performance (we usually have 5-7 performances).
  • No compensation for selection process: By submitting your play(s) for consideration, you give Eden Prairie Players permission to make copies as needed for the selection process. You also give permission for your play to be performed without payment at unrehearsed table readings as part of the selection process.

The Pulp Stage submission guidelines

Do you have an action, fantasy or suspense script that needs nothing-- no costumes, sets or blocking-- to make sense? Do you have a script where a read-aloud of just the dialogue could transform any playing space into a chamber of Story Delight? Show us what you've got!

The Pocket Pulp project is a "shortcut cooking" method for producing quality theatre. Chosen submissions are loaded onto ipads, rehearsed  with fine actors for a couple of hours, then taken to bars & living rooms. No stage directions are read out loud. The actors "enter" by standing and "exit" by sitting. It's a pure Reading; something akin to campfire storytelling-- through theatrical dialogue.

Chosen authors receive $5.00 for each performance of works under 20 minutes and $10.00 for each performance of works 20 minutes or more. Pieces are frequently used for more than one performance. Pocket Pulp also gives authors an excellent marketing angle for their pieces: A play that needs little to no budget to mount and has been proven (through our performances) able to carry an evening.


  • The piece could be described as an action, fantasy or suspense piece.     
  • Though not necessarily limited to 4 characters, the piece requires no more than 4 actors.
  • Contains little to no physical actions OR it has tastefully-placed interludes of narration to cover those actions.     
  • The changes in setting and circumstance are very easy to track just through the dialogue. 
  • Establishes high stakes from the get-go or an atmosphere of danger/outrageousness from the get-go.
  • While it doesn't have to be a comedy, humor does tend to be a good check-in with the audience's focus.
  • Extra points for scripts with more roles for women!

Hip Hop Theater Creator Awards - college students

To contribute to the Kennedy Center celebration ONE MIC: HIP HOP CULTURE WORLDWIDE, KCACTF will present the Hip Hop Theater Creator Awards as part of this year’s Michael Kanin Playwriting Awards Program.

 The awards celebrate new theatrical works that engage hip-hop as an ever-evolving attitude of contemporary resistance and self-definition; creating events for the theatre that tell contemporary stories through the use of one or more of the four original elements of hip-hop culture: B-Girl/B-Boying, graffiti, MC-ing, DJ-ing, and potentially utilizing spoken word, beat-boxing and dance. These awards will recognize single Creator/playwrights/authors, author/performers or collaborative teams.

Danny Hoch, founder of the New York Hip-Hop Theater Festival says "Hip-hop theatre must fit into the realm of theatrical performance, and it must be by, about and for the hip-hop generation, participants in hip-hop culture, or both.”
 “Hip Hop Theater addresses ethnicity, class, culture, gender, sexuality and generation- it is a theatre of issues that confronts not just young people but the whole world.”

Selections from up to five works will be showcased [in concert reading format] at the Kennedy Center in early April 2014. This showcase will be a Millennium Stage presentation, simulcast on the web and archived on the Kennedy Center website. The authors or creative teams will be brought to Washington DC, expenses paid, for the showcase. Where appropriate and necessary, professional performers will be engaged for the presentation.

One Creator/Author or team will receive an award of $1000, a residency at the KCACTF National Festival, and a professional development residency to be mutually determined.

A second place award of $500 will be presented.

The selection panel will consist of members of the KCACTF National Playwriting Program and contributing artists of the Kennedy Center ONE MIC Festival. Selection will be based on the reading, review and consideration of the full package of materials sent to the Kennedy Center for consideration.


  • Author/Creator will be a student [undergraduate or graduate], currently enrolled in a college or university in the US.
  • If a collaboration, at least 50% of the team will be current students.
  • The work’s length can be from ten-minutes to a full-length work
  • Works currently in development will be eligible for award consideration.
  •  Materials to be received for consideration
  • Creator(s) name(s) and creative responsibility on the project
  • Contact information (cell number and email address) for each
  • College or University affiliation of the author/creator and collaborative teammates (if applicable)

Frequency Theatre audio plays

Frequency Theatre puts new, engaging stories at the heart of our work. We want new plays by writers of all ages and levels of experience. We are looking for a refreshing voice, with a play delivered with verve and/ or wit. Plays that we’ll take notice of will utilise the medium, focussing on building atmosphere through the relationship of dialogue, sound effects and silence.

Plays should be 10 to 15 minutes long, as a guide this is between 1800 - 2700 words. Only plays around this length will be considered.

  1. All plays should be in English.
  2. Plays should ideally be written using the standard BBC Radio Format. For guidance this can be found at BBC Writersroom.
  3. Plays should be submitted in Word formats only.
  4. Only plays written for radio will be considered. Screenplays or play texts will be rejected.
  5. Plays should be complete, self contained works.
  6. Plays can be written by more than one writer.
  7. Previously submitted plays will not be considered, only new drafts that we request will be read.
  8. We are unable to enter into feedback with unsuccessful writers.
  9. Copies will only be available following the broadcast.
  10. All successful writers will be notified in advance of broadcast.
  11. Writers retain copyright in respect of their script. Frequency Theatre retains ownership of copyright for all recorded works produced under the name Frequency Theatre Podcast. All recorded works may be edited for any reason including broadcast or promotional purposes.

The Certainty of Chance Theatre Company in association with the Ronald Duncan Literary Foundation are delighted to present the Ronald Duncan Prize 2013.

The Ronald Duncan playwriting competition is for new and up and coming writers. For the last two years the competition has been run by Encore drama and has produced two fantastic shows "Joe's War" and "Rasputin's Mother".

The theme of this year's contest is protest. The writer Ronald Duncan was a pacifist and advocate of peaceful protest which included successfully facing a Conscientious Objection tribunal in 1944. To celebrate his commitment to this cause, this year's Ronald Duncan prize will showcase the best new play that tackles the subject of protest. This could be a peaceful protest, a violent protest or set against the backdrop of a historical protest, the choice is entirely up to you. What we want to hear is an original and interesting voice from a new or up and coming playwright.

Terms and Conditions

  • The scripts should feature “Protest” in some way. This can be thematic, a plot element or a character attribute.

The Right Way to Say ‘Godot’

Maybe Godot never appears because everyone is mispronouncing his name.

More than 60 years after the debut of “Waiting for Godot,” Beckett’s absurdist drama about two vagabonds anticipating a mysterious savior, there is much disagreement among directors, actors, critics and scholars on how the name of that elusive title figure should be spoken.

“GOD-oh,” with the accent on the first syllable, is how “it should be pronounced,” said Sean Mathias, the British director of the latest a Broadway revival of “Waiting for Godot,” opening later this month at the Cort Theater.

“It has to be, really,” he said. “There’s no other way to do it.”

But the theater critic John Lahr said that rendering “is too obvious” for the playwright Samuel Beckett, with its suggestion of the Almighty.

“Beckett is more elusive and poetic, and he wouldn’t hit it on the head like that,” said Mr. Lahr, a longtime contributor to The New Yorker, who instead advocates for “god-OH,” with the accent on the second syllable.

PlayLab - Accepting New Members

PlayLab (Beverly Hills, CA) is our Professional playwright’s lab and a key player in our mission to nurture and promote new works for the theatre that speak to today's audience.

Led by award winning playwright and screenwriter, Shem Bitterman,  PLAYlab meets every two weeks on Sunday for three hours. Membership is for two-years and by invitation with participants focuing on creating a brand new work from scratch each year. The year culminates in LAb Works, a festival of selected new works performed by professional actors and directors.

 Application period for 2014-15 is now open.


  • Writers pitch initial project ideas to the group, brainstorming and working out the kinks before writing their new play
  • Membership is limited to a handful of invited members
  • PlayLab meets for nine three-hour working sessions from December through May. Writers are required to attend at least seven of the nine scheduled sessions, which take place every two weeks on Sundays from 7pm to 10pm.
  • PlayLab hosts full readings of each of the completed plays. All members are encouraged to attend and support their fellow writers at these readings.
  • PlayLab culminates in an eight-week-long festival of workshop productions and readings of the year's completed plays. The festival, known as LAb WORKS, takes place at the Skylight Theatre from October to December
  • Guest participants: On given nights professional directors, guest writers or actors drop in to discuss the plays in progress, or aspects of their craft

Orange Tea Theatre Company is an exciting new English language theatre company based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.  We are appealing for new plays from developing playwrights to be performed in 2014.

We are particularly interested in hearing from female playwrights and/or reading plays with strong female parts at this time.

Please read our guidelines carefully before submission.


  1. The plays should have between 2-6 actors (doubling possible), to be performed by actors ranging mid 20’s-mid 30’s.  Please visit our Ensemble page at www.orangeteatheatre.com/ensemble to get an idea of casting. 
  2. Plays must be completed, full length, and run between 60-90 minutes.
  3. We favour contemporary plays in a modern day settings and encourage the use of unusual or creative performance settings (as opposed to conventional stage settings).
  4. Keep in mind that our demographic has a young, urban, and international outlook.  Audiences are a mix of Dutch natives and expats.

2014 Women Playwrights Series (WPS) and Susan Glaspell Contest

The Centenary Stage Company, an Equity theatre in residence on the campus of Centenary College in  Hackettstown, NJ is accepting submissions for the 2014 Women Playwrights Series (WPS)  and Susan Glaspell Contest.

Now in its 22th year, the WPS is a developmental program dedicated to providing a working forum for the unique and underserved voice of women writing for the theatre today.  Each season 3 new plays are selected for a collaborative workshop process, with a professional director and actors, which takes place in a brief rehearsal period, over a period of a approximately 1 week, allowing time for the playwright to hear and adapt their work with other professionals. The process culminates in a presentation of the work for the public as part of the Series giving CSC audiences larger exposure to new work, as well as offering the playwright an opportunity to get feedback from the audience during the development process.

Playwrights selected for the workshop process will receive a $200 honorarium. Additional funds for travel and housing are available for one playwright each season.

THE  2014 SUSAN GLASPELL CONTEST:  One play from the WPS Festival will be selected by a panel of judges as the winner, to be featured in a subsequent CSC main-stage season as a full production, with an additional award of $1500 to the playwright.

Thespian Production is seeking one-act plays for its 2014 "Theater Madness" season.  Plays should be between 10-15 minutes in length, have no more than four characters, and can be of any genre.  We love producing new and unpublished works but do accept works already produced. Multiple submissions are accepted. Plays should have simple set requirements. Since we are a community theater, plays with excessive vulgar language are less likely to be accepted.

The Long Island City One Act Festival: Vol 2 is now accepting submissions for its new festival in January 2014

The LIC One Act Festival: Vol 2 is a competition style one-act play festival held at The Secret Theatre. Prizes will be offered in the following categories: Best Play ($100), Best Director ($100), Best Actor ($50), and Best Actress ($50). In addition to cash prizes, those plays in the final round will be offered a chance to be non-exclusively published in The Secret Theatre’s Second Anthology of Short Plays.

Plays advance to the final rounds through secret audience votes. Final voting will be done by a panel of judges. Winners will be announced and awarded on the last night of the festival during the closing night party hosted by The Secret Theatre.

Scripts are due by 25 November at 5 PM.

Plays for the festival will be chosen by 6 December.

Theatre InspiraTO's Playwriting Contest

The InspiraTO Theatre Festival, now entering its 9th season, has produced 134 ten-minute plays to date. Each season over 100  theatre artists participate in Canada's largest ten-minute play festival. Be part of it all. See your story come to life.

InspiraTO's Ten-Minute Playwriting Contest is open to everyone without age or geographic restriction. You can only submit one play.  There are no submission fees.

Deadline to submit a play:  Dec. 18, 2013 (midnight E.S.T.)

Submission guidelines:

1. The creative challenge: The staging of the play must involve two or more dimensions* i.e. fantasy & reality; fiction & history; past & present; living & dead; different psychological states (character & alter ego); spiritual & physical world;  reality & dream world; deaf & hearing; human & abstract; stage & breaking the fourth wall, etc.

*A dimension is anything occurring in the same time and space.

Please note: The actors in the script cannot just mention a different dimension - this needs to be shown on stage.  For example, a play where a character just talks about a ghost would not qualify: a ghost, would at some point, need to appear on stage, for the submission to qualify.

2. The play must be a ten-minute play. You must submit online (see instructions below):

Attach your script in a WORD document or in a PDF file.  Hit "submit". The WORD document must be compatible with Window XP. (Note: Vista & Mac formats are not compatible).

The cover page should have the title of the play, the playwright's name and the list of characters. The pages should be numbered. The format should be easy to read.

We accept previously produced plays.  The playwright must own the rights to the play up to the end of June 2014 (i.e. the script cannot be owned by a publisher).  Any style is acceptable except musicals. We are particularly interested in scripts that aren't afraid to make bold choices: quality writing backed by imaginative staging.

Only those playwrights whose plays have been selected will be notified by January 21, 2014.   The plays will be selected by a committee from the Toronto theatre community.
If selected, your play will be performed in Toronto, Canada from May 29 - June 7, 2014.  Between eleven to eighteen  ten-minute plays will be selected and performed. 1st Prize: $500 CDN.

Should your play be selected for inclusion in the festival, you are giving the non-exclusive right to Theatre InspiraTO to produce and perform the play in the 9th Annual InspiraTO Festival in Toronto (Canada's largest ten-minute play festival), in the May/June 2014.  The InspiraTO Festival will find the cast, crew and market your play. Authors retain copyright and full ownership of their plays.

The submission must be a play. A ten-minute play is distinct from a sketch, or a skit; it is a compact play, with a beginning, middle and an end. You need a character facing obstacles in pursuit of some specific goal. You need rising action, conflict, and a climactic moment. Your play must tell a complete story.

The submission must be 10 minutes.  Generally speaking scripts (including the stage directions, character names and dialogue) that are over 1,900 words are more than ten minutes long on stage.  This does not mean that all plays under 1,900 words are under ten minutes.  So be wise - use Word Count.  It also helps to read the play out loud and time it (keeping in mind all the pauses).  You don't want your hard work rejected because it was too long.

Shakespeare in the 'Burg seeks one-act plays

Shakespeare in the ‘Burg is pleased to announce our inaugural one-act playwriting competition, in conjunction with our Shakespeare in the ‘Burg theater festival scheduled for April 4-6, 2014, in Middleburg, VA.

There are two categories of plays that will be judged:
Plays written by students ages 12-17, and
Plays written by adults, ages 18 and over.

Please note that you can write in any style you choose; this is not a “Shakespeare” writing competition, so plays in any genre are welcome.

There is no monetary prize for the competition, but the winning plays will receive a public reading with an audience. The winning plays will be performed the weekend of April 4-6, 2014 at a venue in Middleburg, VA.

Scripts must be original and have not been performed in a professional staging. Musicals, monologues, adaptations, film scripts and television scripts are not eligible. Scripts may be performed in a workshop environment or have development readings, but may not have had a publicly staged, professional performance.

The goal should be to produce a small to medium-sized cast, one-set show with running times of no less than 25 minutes and no more than one hour.

No more than one script can be submitted from a playwright. Give us your best work.

All scripts must be typewritten. If sending a hard copy, please number the pages and use paper clips or staples to ensure your pages stay together.

Name, address and telephone number of the author, along with the title of the play on a separate page. On all subsequent pages, only the title of the play should appear at the top of each numbered page. This will be a blind competition. Judges will not know the names of the authors while judging the plays.

Cast of characters with descriptions and a brief synopsis should be included as part of the play.

Scripts should be formatted in keeping with traditional playwriting manuscripts. Since these are one-act plays without scene changes, it is not as critical to include scene headings. However, feel free to include stage directions and an “at rise” description (what will happen as the lights come up or the curtain rises). Please put all stage directions in parentheses.

Use 8-1/2 x11 paper if submitting a hard copy. Please number all pages in the upper right hand corner. Please include the title of the play in a header on every page. Margins should be one-inch, right and left, top and bottom. Please use ALL CAPS to identify the character speaking. If a character’s speaking lines go over a page break, identify the character speaking with a second character tag on the new page—e.g., JOHN (cont’d).

Double space after stage directions or dialogue and before a character tag. If formatting becomes confusing or difficult, then choose a format and stick to it. Consistency in formatting is the most important thing.

Scripts will be judged on concept, dramatic action, characterization and dialogue. All production and publication rights remain the property of the playwright.

The decision of the judges is final. While we do not assume responsibility for the loss, damage or return of scripts, all reasonable care will be taken. If you want your script back, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope and we will make every effort to return it to you.

Far Off Places seeks drama

Submissions are now open for Volume II, Issue I of Far Off Places, with the theme Sartorial. Is your protagonist a Dedicated Follower of Fashion, or did (s)he inherit a grandmother’s brown suede gloves with a tale to tell? Whatever stories are whispered within your wardrobe, we want to read them!

If you have a piece of writing that is simply stellar but that doesn’t quite fit in the following guidelines, do get in touch. Rules, after all, were made to be broken.

We’re happy to publish short writing in a variety of forms, including poetry, flash fiction, and short-form prose and drama. Poetry should be no more than 40 lines. We accept prose and drama of up to 3000 words. You’re welcome to submit up to three poems or one piece of prose or drama.

Do have a read of one of our earlier issues to see what kind of thing we’re looking for!

A plea: try not to title your work with the theme of the issue - naming it something else will make it stand out!

We consider and give feedback on all submissions, so if you haven’t heard from us by then give us a shout. We welcome simultaneous submissions but would appreciate a heads-up so we can prioritise your piece (within reason!).

We’re currently unable to pay for published work but will happily treat you to a beverage of your choice next time we see you. All published writers will also receive a complimentary digital copy of the magazine. Scripts Wanted for December Short Play Lab

Dear Friend in the Theatre,

It's time to start thinking about the December Short Play Lab (Nov. 23 - 24). We have 19 shows booked for the November Lab, but it's already time to think about the next cycle. New participants are welcome! Whether you've thought about doing a short play in New York but have never tried, or if you're a regular at such events around town, please give a thought to producing a show in the upcoming Short Play Lab. The rules are easy-peasy:

Deadline is Dec. 11. Notification will be soon after submission, depending on number of submissions. The sooner you get your script in, the more time you have to prepare. Get that script in pronto!

Plays should be 1 - 10 pp. in standard playscript format.* (The shorter the better; shorter plays get priority.) Include a title page, as the first page of the script, with your contact info (preferred means of contact is by email).  
Submit scripts in MS-Word.

You produce the play whether or not you live in New York.  The SPL provides the theatre (at the Roy Arias Studios, 300 West 43rd Street, NYC).  

Productions must be non-union: no showcases please! (And no Equity waivers, either.)
Keep production values to a minimum: costumes and hand props are okay. We provide rehearsal cubes, chairs, and a table. You can't leave your stuff in the theatre overnight.
We provide a board op, box office, and venue management.

There are no fees. The SPL keeps the door.

Tickets are $20. Each playwright and director gets to watch his/her show for free. There are no other comps.

There will be a tech rehearsal in the daytime on Dec. 21.

Every play gets 2 performances, 1 on Sat. and 1 on Sun. Each play will be part of 1 of 2 programs: Program A or Program B, but not both. Program A takes place at 7 pm Sat. and 4 pm Sun. Program B takes place at 9 pm Sat. and 2 pm Sun.
We don't do staged readings. Be off-book, please! Plays not off-book during tech will be removed from the line-up.

THE MOST POPULAR PRODUCTION IN EACH PROGRAM RECEIVES A CASH PRIZE OF $75. Winners are determined by polling patrons at the box office.
*12 pt Times Roman; character names in the middle on their own line; line spaces between speeches and between speeches and stage directions; indented stage directions.  

The SPL is a lot of fun and a good way to see your work on its feet in a supportive environment. It's also a great way to see actors and directors at work, so you can recruit people for later productions.

David Winitsky (Artistic Director) and Jeremy Stoller (Contest Producer) of the jewish plays project* are excited to announce the return of their competition for full-length plays dealing with contemporary jewish themes. Using a curated jury process followed by a series of live selection events, the Contest will give equal voice to jewish audiences and artists in creating jewish theater for the 21st Century.

IMPORTANT NOTE: THE CONTEST IS OPEN TO ARTISTS OF ALL BACKGROUNDS, DENOMINATIONS, FAITHS, CREEDS, RELIGIONS and other IDEALS. We believe that jewish identity and culture are specific manifestations of universal human cravings for spiritual, ethical, moral and worldly joy. “Matrilineal descent” is neither important nor necessary.

CONTENT PREFERENCES: The jpp seeks to give theatrical voice to the 21st Century jewish experience, in all its forms. While we value history, we are particularly fond of plays that tackle vibrant strands of today’s world:  social justice, economic justice, diversity, strong women in jewish life, LGBTQ inclusion, new perspectives on Israel, environmentalism, and interfaith relations.

Over the last 10 years, the theatrical community has devised numerous ways to respond in real time to the world around us (props to Gun Control Theater Action, Sojourn Theater and a host of others). We want to encourage a jewish voice in this new world of social action performance.

Without being cheerleaders, we seek to celebrate the ways in which our jewish identity informs and betters our global selves.

SUBMISSION: Entries are due by November 21 at 6 pm (Happy Hanukkah!).  Each submitting playwright must fill out the Contest Application form. As part of the form, playwrights will upload their play as a PDF with their name removed (all plays are reviewed blind). There is no fee to submit, but there is a one (1) submission per person rule.

ELIGIBILITY: Full-length plays that deal with contemporary jewish themes that have never been produced in New York City. The following must be true of a submitted play:

1. It is not a Yiddish play.

2. It is in English.  (We welcome translations.)

3. It is not a Holocaust play. (We have a separate category for those. See //shoah)

4. It contains significant jewish themes, characters, content, or points of view.

5. It does NOT fall into the beloved category of "ethnically stereotypical comedy" (No 'Yiddishemammeh" plays, no "My Afternoon With Bubbe", no "Jewtopia")

6. It has not had a full production in the NY Metro region.

7. It is NOT a musical (plays with music may apply).

REPEAT SUBMISSIONS: Plays that were submitted to the 2012 or 2013 Contest ARE eligible (with the exception of two previous years' winners). We will consult our notes from earlier reviews, so if you have substantially revised your piece, please let us know.

SELECTION PROCESS: The Contest strives to engage a broad audience in a discussion of what new jewish theater should be. All scripts are reviewed by an Artistic Panel of actors, directors, writers and academics for their aesthetic value, structural and stylistic innovation, and production feasibility. This group selects a Top 10 (or so) that continues on to our public contests. Finalists will be announced in January 2014.

PUBLIC CONTESTS: The jpp will present 3-5 of our signature Txt2Thtr events in 2014. At each event, 20-minute selections from three plays are read by a stellar cast for an invited audience. The audience gives real-time feedback to the selection committee, and at the end of the night uses their cell phones to vote on a winner. In 2014, the JPP will present these events all over the nation: JCC Metrowest, JCC New Haven (CT), and potentially Vermont, Baltimore, Chicago and Brooklyn!

THE PRIZE: The winning play will receive development as part of the jpp’s 3rd OPEN Festival of new jewish theater at the 14th Street Y (residency, reading or workshop up to $2,500 plus artist travel to New York) in June of 2014. The Top 10 plays in the Contest will be considered for further development by the jpp, either as part of the Festival or through other programs.

10th Annual Ten-Minute Playwriting Contest

Lakeshore Players Theatre is accepting submissions for 10-minute plays.

Winning plays will be produced at our Annual Festival in June 2014.

Play submissions will be accepted through November 15, 2013.


High school-aged playwrights are encouraged to enter. Plays must include a letter from a teacher or school administrator, written on school letterhead, verifying that the play was written during high school, in addition to the guidelines below. If the committee chooses to name a high school entry as a winner for the 10th annual contest, the winning play will be produced with our other winners in our festival in June 2014.

Please read the following rules and requirements carefully.
Plays not meeting the requirements will be disqualified.


  • The play should be approximately ten-minutes in length.
  • The play must have no more than five on-stage (speaking and non-speaking) characters.
  • You may submit only one play, so send us your best! Please do not make more than one submission.
  • The play should be in a "play format" making it easy for the readers. (We like 12-point, easy to read fonts, such as Times New Roman or Ariel)
  • The play must be unpublished and unproduced at the time of submission to our contest. We do screen for this, so don't send us your play if it has been produced. (Staged readings are not counted as "produced.")
  • Submitting your play to our contest grants Lakeshore Players the right to produce your play in our annual festival and photograph and/or videotape it for archival purposes, if it is chosen as a winner.


  • The play should have simple technical requirements. There won't be a set — a few furniture pieces and a few props only — we only have about one minute in between plays to change scenes.
  • As a community theatre, we want to appeal to the largest possible audience, therefore plays with excessive offensive language are less likely to be selected - please keep that in consideration.
  • Two ways to submit: Email or Mail.
  • Your play must be received no later than November 15, 2013 to be eligible.

Only plays submitted exactly as outlined below will be accepted.

VERY IMPORTANT – Email submission rules below MUST be followed, or your submission will be disqualified.

Icebox Radio submission guidelines

Seeking radio plays suitable for live, theatrical production. Interested in stories with some connection to the Northland - regions commonly referred to as Northern Minnesota and Northwest Ontario, Canada – stories set in these regions or penned by writers from these regions.

Radio plays may be of varying lengths, but 30 minutes is the primary focus.

They are also interested in prose stories not yet adapted to radio; stories 5 pages or less may be submitted in their entirety; for longer stories, submit first 5 pages followed by a one or two paragraph summary of the rest of the story.
Comedy and lighter fare preferred, but they are open to everything.
A $25 stipend is offered for all 30 minutes scripts.

Many Voices Fellowships

Many Voices Fellowships are awarded annually to two artists of color with previous playwriting experience and/or training. In response to a national field study commissioned by the Playwrights' Center and the Jerome Foundation, the Many Voices Fellowships was significantly expanded in the 2013-14 fellowship year, offering a doubled award and opening to writers of color residing outside of Minnesota.

One fellowship will be awarded to a Minnesota playwright, and one fellowship will be awarded to either a Minnesota or national playwright. Both Many Voices Fellowships will provide a $10,000 stipend, an additional $2,500 for living expenses, and $1,500 in play development funds. The Fellowship will also focus heavily on building connections with theater leaders and companies in the Twin Cities and nationwide.

Many Voices Fellows participate in monthly meetings facilitated by Many Voices Program Coordinator Christina Ham to share works-in-progress and receive feedback in preparation for a developmental workshop. Fellows have many opportunities to build connections with local theater artists toward future development and production. Fellows also receive a free two-year Playwrights' Center membership and access to other services and opportunities through the Playwrights' Center.

  • Applicants for the Many Voices Fellowship may not have had more than one play produced by professional theaters at the time of application. These productions are defined as such where the author and/or primary artists (actors, directors, creative collaborators) were compensated, and received at least ten public performances. Ten-minute or one-act plays and university, college, secondary school, amateur, and Equity showcase/waiver productions are not considered full productions.
  • Previous Many Voices participants (including multi-year participants) are eligible to apply.
  • Current or past Playwrights' Center Core Writers, Jerome fellows, or any McKnight playwriting fellows are not eligible to apply.
  • If desired, a Many Voices fellow may reapply for a second year, though the Fellowship may only be repeated once.
  • Many Voices Fellowships are available to artists of color, 21 years of age or older, who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
  • Students in K-12 educational programs or enrolled in undergraduate and graduate degree programs are not eligible.


  • Recipients must maintain residency in Minnesota and within 75 miles of the Twin Cities during the grant year (July 1, 2014-June 30, 2015).
  • Fellowship recipients may not receive any other Playwrights' Center fellowships or grants during the grant year.
  • Recipients are required to participate actively in Playwrights' Center programs during the grant year; including possible teaching and community engagement.
  • Fellowship period begins July 1, 2014 and ends June 30, 2015. All fellowship requirements must be met during that time.

NYTimes seeks student HAMLET videos...

“Brevity is the soul of wit,” declares Polonius in William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” And perhaps short videos of lines from one of the Bard’s most-loved plays will expose the souls of their performers, too.

So The New York Times invites student actors and actresses to submit their performances of lines from “Hamlet” using Instagram.
The Times’s critics have been cataloging the recent bounty of professional performances of Shakespeare’s plays. And with several stagings of “Hamlet” opening soon, we’d like to see how high school and college students interpret key lines from the play using the cameras and apps on the smartphones they might be carrying.

If you are a high school or college student, use Instagram to record one short video of your performance of lines from “Hamlet.” (“To be or not to be” is only an example.) Then fill out the form and submit the link to the video below. You can also add the hashtag “#MaximumShakespeare” on your Instagram post.

The deadline to submit a video link is Dec. 1. 

The best videos will be featured on nytimes.com later in December. If you cannot see the form below, it is also available at this website.

So might audiences muse at the start of the new Broadway staging of “Romeo and Juliet,” the first in the season’s plentiful Shakespeare productions, both on Broadway and off.
As the shows open in the coming months, fellow New York Times writers and I will be regularly posting commentaries on aspects of them, engaging larger questions about how today’s theater artists approach these canonical works, and inviting you to add your opinions about how vitally Shakespeare continues to speak to modern audiences. (Opera, ballet and movies will come up as well.) 
David Leveaux’s “Romeo and Juliet,” which opened on Sept. 19 at the Richard Rodgers Theater, announces its point of view in the show’s opening moments, as Romeo removes his helmet (odd, that, for a swooning romantic; Mercutio, one suspects, wouldn’t bother) and reveals himself in the comely person of Orlando Bloom, clad in ripped jeans, T-shirt and hoodie, plus the kind of assorted man-jewelry you can scoop up by the handful at Urban Outfitters.

BBC 4 Extra are running their award winning Chain Gang series once again – the drama where you decide what happens next.

Award-winning writer Robert Shearman (the man who brought the Daleks back to Doctor Who), has penned an intriguing first episode of a drama, lasting just two minutes. After that, you pitch in your story decide where the story goes, Robert dramatises it and it’s performed by a cast of three versatile actors. Each week there’s a new plot written by a different listener until the final part is broadcast on 7th December 2013.

Writing Tips
Want to join the Chain Gang and shape the story? Here are some tips:

Start by making sure you're completely up-to-date with all that's happened so far, and have a look at the storylines behind the episodes here on the website.

Bear in mind that you're not writing the script itself, or a novel. One way to approach this is to think of telling someone about something dramatic that has happened. You wouldn't say exactly what everyone said, but you should emphasise dramatic or relevant points. Try to bring out some of the tone and feel you want your episode to have, rather than just giving us 200 words of plot. You'll need to move the story along in an interesting way, and try to end on some dramatic moment, or cliff-hanger. And do keep in mind that your ideas will need to become a radio drama. Lots of 'backstory' or people thinking about things can be difficult to work with.

Don’t forget that the next episode doesn’t have to follow on directly in time and place from the last. Are there other characters involved that could start to build a fuller picture of Sally, Mark and our mysterious cabbie?

1.  Don't forget that Episode 4 was the last week for Joe Sims (Mark), due to other commitments. So Mark won't be in any more episodes. But we've room on the cast now for another male actor, so perhaps you'd like to come up with a new male character? Think about what the story is behind episodes 1 to 5, and then use that as a springboard for an intriguing episode 6. You may follow directly on from the current episode, or you may choose to move the story to a different time and place, depending on how you deal with this week's cliff-hanger.

2.  We don't want a script, just a storyline in 200 words. If you're unsure about what to send, please read ‘What’s a Storyline’ (below).

3.  Only write in once you have listened to the most recent part of the story, which is broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Extra every Saturday at 1.10pm, and available online and as a podcast shortly afterward. You’ll also need to be familiar with any earlier episodes.

4.  The submission deadline every week is Thursday at 8am (local UK time).  Submissions received after this time will not be considered.

5.  You can submit as many storylines as you like, in separate emails.

6.  Please send your ideas to radio4extra@bbc.co.uk.  Put the words ‘Chain Gang entry’ as your subject.

7.  In the body of each email please write the following:

  • your full name
  • your phone number (mobile and home phone if possible).  We will probably call the new storyliner during Thursday or Friday.

  • your storyline for the next episode (in no more than 200 words).
