The Players Theatre in NYC is hosting a horror-themed Short Play Festival in October 2011, and we will be seeking submissions for new works in the genre through August 15, 2011. We would love it if we could post a submission/application listing on your blog. Below is the information needed, as well as links to websites for the festival and the theatre:

NOTE: Selected plays will be required to pay a $50 fee to cover staffing and programs. Players’ Theatre will provide production stage manager (lighting/sound technician), house manager and box office personnel. Lights will be a stage wash. We have dual CD player available. The historic Players Theatre in the heart of Greenwich Village is accepting short play and musical submissions for the October Festival competition. This October our theme will be Horror. Starting in early October, five short plays will be presented each week for three weeks. The festival will run Thursday through Sunday in the Players Loft. Each week a Best of the Festival winner will be selected by audience vote. The winner will receive a cash prize of $100.

City Theatre Play Submissions Rules and Information

With the mission of developing and producing original short plays by established talents and promising new voices, City Theatre is looking for wonderful ten-minute plays for our annual Summer Shorts festival and other programming. Having produced hundreds of plays, we know what we want; scripts that are lively and timely, hilarious and thought-provoking, poignant and dangerous. We look for plays that span style and genre. We will consider bilingual scripts and ten-minute musicals. We have no restriction on the age range of the characters. In other words, for us to consider a script for production, we are seeking compelling plays that rise above the ordinary.

Please note as of March, 2011, City Theatre and the Actors Theatre of Louisville will no longer co-sponsor the National Ten-Minute Play Contest, though each theatre will continue its commitment to finding and producing excellent ten-minute plays, and getting to know the work of writers around the country. Playwrights who wish to submit to Actors Theatre of Louisville’s National Ten-Minute Play Contest should visit www.actorstheatre.org. Please review the criteria thoroughly before sending your submission to City Theatre.

Seeing LGBTQ-themed one-act plays

The LSU Department of Theatre presents Outworks 2012, a festival of LGBTQ themed one-act plays.

Deadline for Submission: December 8, 2011
Award: $150 and production videotape

After a successful Outworks 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011, the Louisiana State University Department of Theatre in Baton Rouge, LA is pleased to announce that we are now accepting submissions for Outworks 2012, a festival of new lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered or queer (LGBTQ) themed one-act plays.

Submission Guidelines
Submissions must be the author's own original work. Each entry shall be free from copyright restrictions and the author agrees to hold LSU, its officers, and directors free and harmless from all copyright claims.

Scripts must be LGBTQ-themed.

Submissions must be one-act plays, ranging from (10) ten to (20) twenty minutes in length.

There is a limit of two scripts per playwright.

All Entries should be submitted in Microsoft Word or PDF format via e-mail to outworksfestival@gmail.com with “Outworks 2012” in the subject line.

Deadline is December 8, 2011

Scheduled production dates are May 1 - 6 of 2012

Submissions will be read and scored by a faculty/student committee. The committee will select six plays. These six playwrights will receive $150 in monetary compensation, each play selected will be guaranteed three staged
performances, and each playwright will receive a video of his/her production. Playwrights wishing to attend the festival are responsible for all travel expenses.

The LSU Theatre Lab season retains all rights and privileges concerning casting, production, and programming for Outworks. LSU Theatre reserves the right to:
Reproduce as many copies of the play as are necessary for distribution to the judges and participants in the production.

Videotape the performance for archival purposes.

Use the title, author's name and images from the production for publicity purposes related to the Outworks Festival.

Metropolitan Playhouse presents its 7th annual living literature festival, devoted
to the writing of Horatio Alger.

Scheduled for January 16th through January 29th, 2012, the festival is a collection
of new plays celebrating the spirit of the artist who defined the term "rags to riches". Horatio Alger became famous at a time in America when class was still an issue and his boys' adventure stories were inspiration to many readers. Adaptations of Horatio Alger's works, biographies or stories drawn from inspiration of what has become known as the Horatio Alger Myth are all welcome.

The annual festival is a co-production of Metropolitan Playhouse and the participating artists.

Metropolitan will curate, host and promote the festival, while the participants will
create and perform the plays in the festival. Proceeds will be divided
between Metropolitan and the participants.

Submissions are welcome from individual artists and performance companies
alike. Co- producers will take responsibility for conceiving and creating their
contribution to the festival, with use of Metropolitan's space and physical
resources. Metropolitan will coordinate and promote the festival as a part of its
20th Season, devoted to the theme of "Class".

Submissions may be twenty- minute plays, one-acts, or full length performances
(though no longer than 1 hour and 45 minutes.) There are no restrictions concerning style.

Adaptations, biographies, fantasies, treatises will all be considered. Selection by
Metropolitan Playhouse will be based on artistic quality, feasibility of production,
relationship to Horatio Alger, and suitability for the venue.

No Scripts alone! Please note, we are seeking submissions of performances which we
will co- produce. We are NOT seeking scripts for Metropolitan to produce. We will
not provide directors or actors for productions.
And plays from the period will receive lowest consideration. This festival is
particularly devoted to new theater pieces inspired by non-theatrical writing.

Julie Harris Playwright Awards Competition

Rules for the Julie Harris Playwright Awards Competition
(Entries accepted between August 1st and November 1st)

1. Authors must be U.S. Citizens or legal residents.

2. Entries must be original, full-length plays (minimum of 75/80 minutes playing time), unpublished, unproduced, and not currently under any option. "Unproduced" means: No previous production of any kind (Equity or non-Equity) for which actors or authors were paid or admission was charged, or both. No musicals are eligible. Plays with an occasional song for ambience are considered.

3. An author may submit only one entry, whether under his or her name, or a pseudonym. Co-Authorships are permissible.

4. Entries must be written in English and typed or computer printed (no dot matrix) in standard American or English stage play format. The plays must be securely bound.

5. The following entries are not eligible: musicals, short one act plays (less than 75 minutes), groups of short one act plays (related or unrelated), translations, plays for children, a play that has won any other competition, a play that was entered in any prior year's Beverly Hills Theatre Guild Playwright Award Competition. For entries adapted or based or suggested by/from other materials, which are copyrighted, authors must provide proof of copyright owner's sanction. (e.g. under current copyright).

6. Entries must be submitted with completed and signed applications and received by BHTG between August 1st and November 1st (postmark accepted) of the contest year. Only entries received between these dates will be eligible. Scripts sent before or after these dates will not be accepted, read or returned. Results will be announced on this web site the following June.

7. Submissions in non-compliance of these Rules and the Submission Procedures will be ineligible for entry in the competition. For return of ineligible submissions, please read Number 7 under "Submission Procedures."

8. The Beverly Hills Theatre Guild has the right to accept or reject any entry without explanation, and will not correspond with, or discuss with any person the results of the competition or the acceptance or rejection of any entry. No entry is returned.

9. The competition judges' decisions are final in all respects.

10. As a sponsor of this Competition, the Beverly Hills Theatre Guild has the following rights, which it may exercise at its sole discretion:

a. To declare any entry ineligible if prior to Competition's close (June 1), the entry is in violation of rule #2. Authors must notify the BHTG of any change in status.
b. To reproduce as many copies of an entry as are necessary for distribution among the judges or to request an author to supply a specified number of copies. The author must comply with that request.
c. To use the author's name and title of any award winning entry for publicity about this Playwright Award and the results of the competition.
d. To present one script-in-hand, rehearsed reading of an award winning entry to an invited, non-paying audience. No royalty payment will be due to the entry's author for that reading.

11. Each award winner shall, at all times, in connection with publication, production, publicity, programs, posters and advertisements about an award winning entry, designate that the play is an "Award Winner of the Beverly Hills Theatre Guild/Julie Harris Playwright Award Competition." Award winners must consent to sign a letter of agreement with BHTG to this effect.

12. Each entry shall be free from copyright restrictions relating to this Award and the author shall hold The Beverly Hills Theatre Guild, its officers, and directors free and harmless from all copyright claims.

13.The BHTG is not a producing organization. No production is connected with the competition nor any prize awarded.

14. Sorry, the Beverly Hills Theatre Guild - Julie Harris Playwrights Competition does not sponsor scholarships, fellowships, educational grants, or loans to students or private individuals. Nor does the Beverly Hills Theatre Guild as an organization.

A clip holding pages together unfortunately doesn't constitute being "bound". (This is insisted upon for the protection of the script and benefit of the writer. Loose scripts may have pages become misplaced or lost. The competition is not responsible for loss or damage to entries or parts thereof.)

5. Do not show your name, address, or any identifying information on any page or on the cover of your entry. Attach with a removable paper clip a sheet containing the title of your entry, your name, address, phone number and any other information. You may enter the copyright or registration date and number on the title page of the bound script.

6. To preserve anonymity, all entries will be identified by numbers for judging; all identifying marks will be removed.

7. Submissions will not be returned. Enclose with your submission a stamped, self addressed, #10 envelope for our response.

8. You may enclose a self-addressed stamped postcard for acknowledgment of receipt of your entry. Competition winners to be announced on this web site in June.

Accepting New Plays by Female Playwrights
From July 26th to July 28th, Urban Stages will debut its first reading series aimed at celebrating up-and-coming and established female playwrights of today called WORDS BY WOMEN.

We are currently seeking submissions for the second installment of this series to take place the first week of September 2011 and possibly a third installment TBA.

ELIGIBILITY: Female Playwrights (only!) in the United States. Plays may have been developed elsewhere, but never produced in New York City. Subject matter and character variations are open but special attention will be given to plays with cultural significance.

TO BE INCLUDED WITH EVERY SUBMISSION: A biography and/or author's history of the play, character breakdown, and brief synopsis of the play.


There is not a fee, but there is a one (1) submission per person rule.

WHEN TO SUBMIT: Now until August 15th. Submissions must be postmarked by August 15th. Submissions are not accepted by email (sorry).

Genre: One-Acts and Full-Length plays. No translations or adaptations.

Thank you for your interest in ScriptFEST. The submission period of scripts for ScriptFEST 2012 will be August 1, 2011 through September 30, 2011.

Scripts postmarked before August 1st or after September 30th will not be eligible.

We welcome your submission and hope the following information will answer your questions. If you need more information, please call the SART business office at 828-689-1384.

New scripts of full-length plays and musicals in English that have not been published nor professionally produced. No One-Acts. No Children's Plays.
(Scripts that have gone through a developmental process or other readings are eligible. Scripts produced by amateur community theatres and/or educational theatres are eligible.)

Playwrights may submit only one title each submission period.
Excerpts and summaries will not be accepted without the FULL script.
No film or television scripts, translations or adaptations.
Adaptations of novels and short stories are acceptable. Adaptations of movies and stage scripts are not acceptable.
If you have submitted a particular title in a previous year, it may be submitted again if and only if you have made significant revisions to the script since it was last submitted. It would be best if you explained this in a cover letter so we wouldn't have to contact you for verification.

Submission requirements:

TWO "hard" copies of script on white paper are required. One or two-sided paper format is the author's choice. All pages must be standard 3-hole punched, or better yet, in a binder.
Synopsis Page(s) (optional) inserted directly behind the Title Page containing play synopsis, character descriptions, and other notes.
**Do not have the author's name and/or other identifying information anywhere on the title page, synopsis or pages of the script. If you do, your submission may not be accepted! **
Provide one additional and separate Title Page that includes the author's name, date, etc.
Author's Resume, or detailed background information.
If you include a cover letter, DO NOT include synopsis, notes, or other important information in the letter. Anything you want the reviewers to read must be included on the inserted synopsis page(s) of the scripts.

Other Information

Musicals should also include a score and/or a recording of at least four songs on cassette or CD. Only one score/recording is necessary.

Attention Political Playwrights: Call For Entries 2012

The Castillo Theatre is seeking new scripts for the stage that engage the political/social/cultural questions affecting the world today for its fourth annual Mario Fratti-Fred Newman Political Play Contest. The purpose of the Political Play Contest is to encourage the writing of such plays, and to provide a stage for scripts that might not otherwise find one.

While Castillo recognizes that in the broadest sense, all theatre is political, the contest is seeking politically progressive plays that: look at social and/or economic problems and challenges; explore possibilities of social transformation; and, reflect the concerns and interests of communities and/or which explore the importance of community. Castillo also encourages scripts that experiment with form and seek new ways of seeing and new ways of experiencing theatrical performance.

The plays submitted to the Fratti-Newman Contest may be written in any style, set in any historical time, geographic or imaginary location, contain any number of characters and be of any length. The plays must be in English and cannot be musicals or adaptations. No scripts will be considered that have previously been submitted to this contest, have received a production or won other contests. Only one script per playwright will be accepted.

The contest is judged by a team of distinguished theatre artists. The winning script(s) will receive a reading and/or a production at the Castillo Theatre in New York City during the theatre’s 2012 summer season.

All scripts should be submitted in hard copy and must be accompanied by:

statement of the political/social/cultural questions that the playwright is engaging with the script;
a brief synopsis;
character breakdown, including specific gender, age and ethnic requirements, if any;
set requirements, including how many sets and any special effects needed;
100-word biography of the playwright;
a current email address in order for us to acknowledge receipt of the script and be able to contact you during the selection process

Please note:

Scripts will not be returned.
Castillo will not give critical feedback to playwrights/contestants.
Contest winners are required to sign a letter of agreement, which will include but not be limited to granting the right for Castillo to produce one or more readings and/or a full production of the winning play.
Contest winners are responsible for travel expenses or any other expenses incurred as a result of participating in the development of the play with Castillo, or as a result of attending the reading and/or full production.

. . . to be held on its Second Stage, the Ronald F. Peierls Theatre, during March 2012.

Submission Guidelines

Only unproduced works will be accepted.
Plays that have had staged readings are eligible.
No adaptations, musicals, or children's plays.
Cast size maximum: 8.
Length: 40 minutes maximum, no minimum.
Settings should be simple or suggested.
Playwrights may make multiple submissions. They need not be made under separate cover.
Please do not submit works that have been previously submitted.
Scripts must be postmarked by September 30, 2011.
Please submit a cover letter, a synopsis, and a resume along with one copy of the play. Cover sheet of play should have title, author, author's address, author's telephone number, and author's email address (if available). Plays should be neatly bound or stapled on the left-hand corner (no loose pages and no binders, please). All submissions must include a standard SASE for correspondence. Or, if playwrights wish to have their works returned, an appropriate SASE must also be included.

Selected plays will be presented for 10 performances. Playwrights will receive a small stipend.

Plays should be submitted to The 15th Annual Festival of One-Act Plays, Attn: Jeffrey Sanzel, Artistic Director, THEATRE THREE, P.O. Box 512, Port Jefferson, NY 11777-0512. We do not accept electronic (email) submissions. Please do not call or stop by the theatre.

Final selection of plays will be in late 2011.

Yale University Press and Yale Repertory Theatre are seeking submissions for a major new playwriting competition, The Yale Drama Series. The winner of this annual competition will be awarded the David C. Horn Prize of $10,000, publication of his/her manuscript by Yale University Press, and a staged reading at Yale Rep. The winning play will be selected by series judge John Guare.

There is no application form or entry fee. Please follow these guidelines in preparing your manuscript:

1. This contest is restricted to plays in the English language, though submissions are accepted worldwide.

2. Submissions must be original, unpublished full-length plays written in English. Submissions must be original, full-length plays. Translations, musicals, and children’s plays are not accepted. The Yale Drama Series is intended to support emerging playwrights. Playwrights may win the competition only once.

3. Plays that have had professional productions are not eligible.

4. The manuscript must begin with a title page that shows the play’s title and your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address (if you have one), and page count; a second title page which lists the title of the play only; a list of characters; a list of acts and scenes; and (if applicable) a list of acknowledgments.

5. Plays must be typed/word-processed, numbered and in standard professional play format. A brief biography may appear at the end of the manuscript, but is not required.

6. Do not bind or staple the manuscript.

7. Playwrights may submit only one manuscript per each year.

Submissions for the 2012 competition must be postmarked no earlier than June 1, and no later than August 15, 2011.

Do not send the only copy of your work. Manuscripts cannot be returned after the competition. If you wish receipt of your manuscript to be acknowledged, please include a stamped, self-addressed postcard. If you wish to be informed by June 2012 of the contest results, please include an email address on your title page.

Award winners will remain on our contest page for at least one month or until we find a new play that deserves publication.

Bonderman Playwriting for Youth early bird registration

Plays should be intended for young audiences third grade through high school (no play is expected to appeal to all ages simultaneously).

Playwrights must suggest the appropriate age category on the official entry form.

Scripts designed for the youngest audience, grades 3-5, should be approximately 30-45 minutes in length. Plays designed for grades 6 and above should have a minimum performance length of approximately 45 minutes.

One development slot will be reserved for a script aimed at the 3-5th grade audience.

Scripts must not be committed to publication at the time of submission. Commissioned works that are not in development are eligible.

Scripts previously produced in an educational or vocational setting are eligible, if playwrights are eager to pursue development of the script.

Scripts previously produced professionally are NOT eligible. (i.e., productions in which the director and actors have been paid).

If the play is an adaptation or dramatization, written proof must be provided that the original work is in public domain or permission of the holder of the copyright has been granted.

Musicals will not be accepted for the 2011 contest.

Only ONE submission per playwright is accepted.

Submission Guidelines

Manuscripts must be submitted electronically as editable digital files (no scans).

Author's name MUST NOT APPEAR in any manner on the manuscript.

Each submitting playwright must also complete and send an entry form electronically.

All submissions MUST include a brief synopsis and a cast list. The synopsis should be no more than one page and should include:

List of unusual effects or technical requirements;
List of characters noting age and sex, (and possible doublings).
Supporting materials (reviews, publicity, etc.) SHOULD NOT accompany the submission.
All submissions will be acknowledged via email.
Plays submitted to previous Bonderman National Youth Theatre Playwriting Workshops are ineligible.
Playwrights give permission for their work or portions of it to be read at the Symposium and to be archived in the Child Drama Collection, Hayden Library, at Arizona State University.
Playwrights whose work is being considered for full development (ie a potential finalist) will be asked to submit a brief history of the work and goals for the week of development. Subsequently, each playwright will be expected to confer with his/her director and dramaturg prior to casting.
Playwrights are expected to be in residence in Indianapolis throughout the workshop and symposium.
