BBC World Service International Playwriting competition

web site

These are the rules and terms and conditions for entering the click BBC World Service International Playwriting competition. Please ensure that you read and understand them as failure to follow will result in your entry not being considered.

1. Entry is only open to anyone who is over the age of 16 as at 31 March 2011 who is not normally a resident of the UK. This may include anyone living/working in the UK on a temporary basis (up to 12 months) at the time of entering the competition. Professional and previously published writers are eligible to enter, but this is not a requirement of entry.

2. Entrants must not be BBC or British Council employees and their close relatives or any person connected to the competition. Proof of age, identity and eligibility may be requested.

3. Entrants should write a radio play of approximately 60 minutes in length on any subject of their choice. Adaptations of novels are not eligible.

4. Plays entered must not have been professionally produced in any medium (an informal play-reading is acceptable; a play-reading with a professional director and in front of a non-paying audience is acceptable, but a performance involving payment to actors and/or a paying audience is not).

5. Plays entered in the competition must not, at the time they are submitted, have been offered for publication, performance or broadcast in any other form or medium to any other person or company. Nor can they, at the time of entry or during the course of the competition, have been entered for any other competition. The winning playwrights will be deemed to have entered into an undertaking not to accept offers for their entries from other broadcasters or publishers before December 2011.

6. All scripts submitted must be a minimum of 50 pages of A4 paper (or equivalent) and a maximum of 75 pages (note, a rough guide is a minute per page; please read and time your play before you send it). The play should have a maximum of six central characters (there may be up to three small "doubling" characters too, who don’t have more than a few lines each). Your play must be accompanied by a short synopsis which outlines the complete story of the play. This must be no more than 400 words.

7. There are two categories for entry. One is for entrants who speak English as a first language and the other is for entrants with English as a second language.

The BBC may require proof of eligibility for the selected category before announcing a winner.

8. The play must be written substantially or entirely in English. Unfortunately, we do not have the facility to offer a translation service. Entries that have been translated must acknowledge this fact by giving a credit to the translator or translators. Entries that have been translated will be entered in the English as a first language category.

9. The competition opens on 16 October 2010 and closes on 31 March 2011.

Entries must be received in London by midnight GMT on 31 March 2011. Entries received after this time will not be considered.

10. Entries must be submitted either:

* by post to the following address: Rm 823B, South East Wing, BBC Bush House, Strand, London WC2B 4PH

OR

* by email to the following email address: radioplay@bbc.co.uk

11. All entries must be accompanied by a completed copy of the entry form attached to this leaflet or which can be downloaded at: www.bbcworldservice.com/radioplay.

12. Entrants can enter individually or as part of a group. If entering as a group, all entrants must meet the entry requirements and be eligible for the same category. No member should have also entered individually. Please note, the prize only includes payment for one airfare per category.

13. In the case of an entry by two or more writers, the BBC will need written or email confirmation from each writer involved that they are prepared to take a share of the prize money and are prepared to receive those funds from a nominee who will be one of the writers, as the prize money will be paid to one individual only. The nominee will be selected by the writers and it will be his or her responsibility to distribute these funds to the other writers and the organisers can take no responsibility for that aspect.

14. Only one entry per person is permitted including any group entries. If you submit more than one entry, only the first entry received will be considered. Please do not submit plays you have entered before.

15. All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party. The BBC accepts no liability if entrants ignore these rules and entrants agree to fully indemnify the BBC against any claims by any third party arising from any breach of these rules.

16. Entries must not contain defamatory, obscene, offensive or any other unsuitable material. Entries must be suitable to be broadcast by the BBC to audiences of all ages.

17. Entrants retain the copyright in their entries but grant to the BBC a non-exclusive licence to broadcast their entry across all media, as well as use it on any online platforms.

18. The prize for the winning entry in each category will consist of £2,500 sterling and a trip to London (airfare and accommodation for one person) to see the winning play being recorded for broadcast on the BBC World Service and attend a prizegiving event. Where the winner is under 18, the prize will also include airfare and accommodation for an accompanying adult. The prize is as stated and cannot be deferred or transferred. There will be no cash alternatives.

19. As with any new play, the BBC may require further drafts and revisions of the winning plays. Winners must be willing and able to undertake redrafting and revision work in conjunction with the BBC. This work is likely to take place between August and September 2011 and the winning entrants will need to keep time free, and remain contactable, to achieve this. This work will be completed with the winning entrant using email or the most suitable method available. We reserve the right to revoke a play’s prize winning status if this work is not completed.

20. The BBC will reserve the right to make minor cuts, changes and edits to the winners' final draft scripts.

21. Subject to a satisfactory recording being made, the winning plays will be broadcast on BBC World Service in November 2011. Winners will first be required to enter into a contract with the BBC on the standard terms and conditions applicable for broadcast of BBC Radio Drama. No fee will be payable other than the £2500 sterling offered as prize money for one broadcast cycle and the BBC's standard package of rights under that contract. If repeated on the World Service, a sum of £1250 will be payable for the first repeat cycle and thereafter the BBC will have certain broadcasting and other rights all in accordance with the contract.
Terms and Conditions

These Terms and Conditions supplement the competition Rules above and are deemed to be integral to these.

1. The BBC's code of conduct for competitions applies to this competition. You can read more about it here: click BBC Competitions Policy.

2. Entries received before the opening date or after the closing date will not be considered.

3. Entries will not be returned so please remember to keep a copy. Unsuccessful entrants will not be contacted and no feedback on any entry will be provided.

4. The BBC will only ever use personal details for the purposes of administering this competition. Please see the click BBC's Privacy Policy.

5. By entering the competition, entrants warrant that they have legal capacity to enter the competition and agree to be bound by the competition Rules and these Terms and Conditions.

6. Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

Plays will be selected for their originality and imagination, use of good dialogue, a compelling story with a believable plot, characters and structure, use of the medium of radio and how practical the play would be for the BBC to produce.

7. Entries will be judged through the following process:

Scripts will be read by a team of readers and a long shortlist drawn up. This will then be cut to a maximum of 16 scripts (8 first language and 8 second language) and these scripts sent to a panel of judges, who meet for a day to discuss the shortlist and decide upon the winners, using their judgement of the criteria above.

8. The names of the short listed entrants and the titles of their plays will be posted on the competition website in August 2011. Following the final judges' meeting, the winners' names and the titles of their plays will be posted on the website by end September 2011. You can access the competition website by visiting click www.bbcworldservice.com/competitions or click www.bbcworldservice.com/radioplay and selecting International Playwriting Competition 2011 from the options listed there.

9. The winner will be contacted by a member of the BBC production team during July 2011. If the winner cannot be contacted after reasonable attempts have been made to do so, the BBC reserves the right to offer the prize to the next best entry.

10. It is planned that the two overall winning plays will be recorded in October 2011 and the playwrights invited to attend the production and a prize-giving event in London.

11. The BBC may wish to seek from the runners-up certain additional rights in their plays for educational/development purposes which may include, but not be limited to, permission to record scenes of the play to be available online at bbc.co.uk and possibly for broadcast. Entrants agree that the right for the BBC to record and possibly broadcast/use scenes from their play online in this way will be available to the BBC in principle, subject to negotiation of appropriate terms for the exact use in question at the time

12. The BBC and British Council may consider arranging for the publication of a book containing some of the plays entered in the Competition. To make this possible, writers should retain their publishing copyright until 31 December 2011.

13. The names of each entrant whose entry is broadcast or used on-line will be made public. Entrants must agree to take part in any post-competition publicity if required.

14. The BBC's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Unsuccessful entrants will not be contacted.

15. The BBC and the British Council reserve the right to disqualify any entry which breaches any of these Terms and Conditions or to withhold or withdraw a prize if they consider it necessary or if, in their opinion, entries do not reach the required standard.

16. The BBC reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions or cancel this competition at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, and if circumstances arise outside its control. In this event, a notice will be posted on the click www.bbcworldservice.com/radioplay website.

17. The BBC, its sub-contractors, subsidiaries and/or agencies cannot accept any responsibility whatsoever for any technical failure or malfunction or any other problem with any server, Internet access, system, the post or otherwise which may result in any entry being lost or not properly registered or recorded. Proof of sending is not proof of receipt.

18. These Terms and Conditions are governed by the laws of England and Wales.

web site

New Carpa Theater Company in Phoenix, Arizona, is soliciting short-play scripts, monologues, play excerpts and performance pieces, 5 to 10 minutes long, to be presented as a part of the "Performing 1070 Short-Play Festival" to be held March 30 at Arizona State University West as part of the 8th Annual Border Justice event and on the grounds of the Arizona State Capitol March 31.

The purpose of this short-play festival is to highlight the effects of a series of draconian, state-based immigration-related legislation enacted or proposed in Arizona over the past decade, culminating in the signing of SB 1070 by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer

All pieces should speak to the passage of the bill or related topics and the impact on immigrants and our current and longstanding national debate of the issue. The submission deadline is midnight, February 18, 2011.

General Guidelines and Information:

· All scripts must be typed and delivered via e-mail to info@newcarpa.org or mailed to New Carpa Theater Co., 15017 S. 28th Street, Phoenix, AZ. Please not send original copies of your scripts. Submissions cannot be returned. (Sorry, we just don't have the staff. ) We will consider 5- to 10-minute scripts, monologues, play excerpts or performance pieces. Scripts may be submitted in English or Spanish.

· Eight to 10 short plays/performance pieces will be selected for staging on the evening of March 30 at ASU West and at the State Capitol, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., on March 31, 2011. (Additional local and national performances may be scheduled.)

· Playwrights retain all rights to their work.

· A five-member panel of local playwrights/writers/producers will select the plays to be performed.

· A team of local actors, directors and crew will be assembled to stage the plays -- though playwrights/producers have the option of making advance arrangements to provide their own crew and performers. Sets and costuming will be minimal.

· None of the theater artists, crew or producers will receive compensation or royalties.

· Please note that the performances at the Arizona State Capitol will be staged outdoors and will be open to the general public.

A Message from New Carpa Theater Co.

The purpose of this short-play festival is to highlight the effects of a series of draconian, state-based immigration-related legislation enacted or proposed in Arizona over the past decade, culminating in the signing of SB 1070 by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer. This is a non-partisan, grassroots, community-based theater project designed to provide theater and performance artists an opportunity to express their views on one of the most compelling human and civil rights issues of our time. -- James E. Garcia, Producing Artistic Director, New Carpa Theater Co., NewCarpa.org / 623-252-2772.

reminder - share your excellent play with the world

Have you written a great 10-minute play? Let NYCPlaywrights tell the world why it's so great.

In 2010, NYCPlaywrights posted an article "How do you write a good 10-minute play?"

http://nycplaywrights.org/10min/

The article presented an analysis of three 10-minute plays written by NYCPlaywrights members, along with the plays themselves.

Although the plays are very different from each other (a comedy, a horror tale, and a romance) each demonstrated qualities of a good 10-minute play.

NYCPlaywrights will post another article very much like "How do you write a good 10-minute play?" featuring three more excellent plays, on March 27, 2011. The worldwide theatre lovers who visit the NYCPlaywrights web site will get to read and appreciate these three 10-minute plays - your play could be one of them.

The Rules:

1. Send only one ten minute play per author to info@nycplaywrights.org.

2. The script submission should be sent by email, with the play itself as a file attached to the email. File format should be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) or .pdf.

3. The script should be in standard playscript format. If you are not sure what that is, see this page on the NYCPlaywrights web site:

http://nycp.blogspot.com/p/playscript-formatting-template.html

Plays that are not in standard format will be rejected immediately.

4. Make sure you have your name and your email address on the title page of the script.

5. Deadline: February 15, 2011

6. The three selected plays will be announced March 12, 2011.

7. Plays can be from anybody, anywhere in the world, but must be primarily in English (a few non-English phrases are acceptable, but the phrases must include English translations in production notes or stage directions.)

8. There is no fee for submission - and no payment given for the plays selected. Do not send a submission if you are expecting monetary compensation.

You are strongly advised to read the article "How do you write a good 10-minute play?" before sending work. This article is an excellent guideline for the kind of work we are looking for:

Brooklyn Publishers writers guidelines

(Brooklyn Publishers is located in Texas, not NYC)

web site

PLAYS WE PUBLISH
Brooklyn publishes plays and theatre books for teens and youth, and we specialize in scripts that are clean, yet have a cutting-edge quality. The genre of works we publish is broad and includes comedy, drama, mystery, fantasy, farce and melodrama from 10 to 120 minutes in length.

Though it may be a challenge to write strong plays void of language or content issues, the rewards are great. The many thousands of public and private schools, high schools and middle schools, elementaries and youth theatres are searching for shows to fill their school year. Many of our writers have seen great success through strictly writing for this challenging but rewarding market.

WHAT WE SEEK
The following are the types of plays we seek:
* Full Length Plays
* One Act Plays
* Ten Minute Monologues
* Ten Minute Duets
* Ten Minute Skits and Plays
* Short Play Collections

We publish plays for the following markets:
High School
Middle School / Junior High
Children's Theatre / Youth Theatre

Brooklyn publishes plays that appeal to the teen market. We look for stage plays and competition pieces and works that address issues for young people in today's world. We do not want weak stories, cardboard characters, or juvenile approaches. Young actors want fresh material with over-the-top comedy or realistic approaches to dramatic issues.

What plays best in our market:
*Full lengths and one acts with multiple characters, especially female roles
*Strong, well-developed characters that will allow young actors to grow and develop their acting skills
*Ten minute comedic or dramatic duets or monologues for competition
*Fun, over-the-top characters
*Realistic dramatic characters facing a crisis
*Thematic dramas with strong conflict and resolution
*Clever parodies of any popular entity (i.e. American Idle)
*Silly comedies (but well-written - there's a fine line here) that appeal to teens or children

TOP REASONS FOR REJECTION
Plays with adult language. Many high school competitions disqualify competitors if adult language is used. While we are not attempting to censor our authors, we are looking for plays that will best fit our market and its requirements. There are occasional exceptions to this rule, but overall we are looking for language that is creative, inventive, and clean.

Too juvenile or cliche - Just because you're writing for young people doesn't mean they'll accept nonsense. Even silliness needs to be clever and well-written. Order some sample copies of our plays as examples. We like slapstick comedy and broad comedic characters (although subtlety is nice as well), and we want realistic characters faced with a crisis in drama.

Plays that don't go anywhere - Be sure your play builds. Teens have short attention spans (for that matter, so do most adults), and if the story is too bogged down in excessive dialogue, or if the play wonders aimlessly, they will simply tune out. If the comedy or suspense doesn't build from scene to scene, if we're not involved with the main character(s) or the dramatic question, then the play isn't going anywhere.

Plays with too few characters - Although there is a market in professional and community theatre for two or three character plays, they are extremely difficult for us to market. For ten minute plays or shorter works, this is okay, but for most one acts and full lengths, large casts work best. Also, we're interested in well-drawn, multi-dimensional female characters.

HOW TO SUBMIT AND WHAT TO INCLUDE
We highly encourage you to send your submission via our Web site at www.brookpub.com, by clicking on Submit a Play in the Author’s Corner on the left border. You may also submit a play by e-mail with attachment at editor@brookpub.com or by snail-mail with a complete manuscript to me at:
Brooklyn Publishers
Attn: Editor
5213 New Orleans Drive
Odessa, Texas 79762

When you submit a play, please include the following:
Short synopsis of the work
The play’s genre, duration, and cast size
Character list
Production history (if any - not required)
Short bio of the playwright
Contact information, including e-mail address, phone number, and mailing address

Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat are our preferred text processing programs; however, if you use another program please use Rich Text Format (rtf). This option is available in most word processing programs by going to the “File” menu and selecting “Save As…” If you are only able to submit a manuscript by mail, then please send the manuscript to the address mentioned earlier in this section. Again, be sure to include your full contact information and the play’s genre, duration, etc. ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS SUBMITTED THROUGH THE AUTHOR'S CORNER ON OUR WEB SITE ARE PREFERRED.

Advice from the editor:
Keep writing and don't become discouraged. Don't be afraid to rewrite your work. Don't be discouraged by a rejection. Write every day. And please, be patient with response times. Although we try to respond within a short time, response times vary according to the time of the year. Just remember, we will give your script individual attention, and we don't want to rush the process.

THE SLASH - NYCPlaywrights members in Midwinter Madness

Sending scripts to the BBC

web site

PLEASE NOTE - this opportunity is for UK residents ONLY - for non-UK residents please see the BBC World Service International Playwriting competition

BBC writersroom is the first point of call at the BBC for all unsolicited scripts and writers. All work is assessed primarily for the talent of the writer, and in addition for the script's suitability for further development.

What we accept
Full unsolicited scripts (or episodes) for film, TV drama, radio drama, TV and radio sitcom. Also stage plays, but only as a calling card for a writer's talent.

What we don't accept
Spec scripts for existing shows – we want to see your original work.
Script samples, short stories, novels, sketches, or ideas/treatments for programmes.
Scripts sent by email - we don't have the resources to print them or assess them on screen.
Scripts for short films.
Adaptations of other people's work.
Work sent in from overseas.

Please read the guidelines, checklist, and FAQ before you send us your script.

Where to send your script
BBC writersroom
1st Floor, Grafton House
379 Euston Road
London
NW1 3AU

How to bind your script
As long as it holds your script together strongly, any binding is acceptable. We recommend metal fasteners or a bulldog clip.

Please don't send us scripts in ring binders or plastic folders as they will cost you more to post, and aren't recyclable. There's also no need to use a padded envelope.

We receive about 10,000 scripts a year, and all eligible scripts are logged and assessed. If the opening ten pages hook our attention, your script will be read fully and receive feedback from our readers. All other scripts are returned without feedback.

Competition is tough, and we only recommend the very best writers and scripts. We don't discuss individual scripts unless we are developing your work further.

Contact us only with urgent inquiries - for example, if you have not had an acknowledgement within a month of sending a script, or a further response within four months of acknowledgement.

performers and director and with minimal technical elements. Again, think
Fringe Festival. Proof of rights will be needed. Artistic New Directions
will facilitate wherever possible.
Pieces can be brought into Anything Goes (our ongoing Wednesday labs) for

Festival Dates: July 14,15,16 & 17, 2011

- This year we are trying something different and assigning a title for your written work.

All submissions for this year's festival must be titled "Fine Art". What you write about is completely up to you- art can be a person, an acronym; your concept of the art world in general but all pieces must be titled "Fine Art". Also, you may punctuate the title in any manner you wish.

- Also, this year we will not be limiting content; no words are off limits. No concepts verboten. We just hope to pick the best eight of all submitted.

-Your written submission MUST be performed in UNDER fifteen minutes- this year we will be much more staunch on that subject; even going so far as timing a table read in order to confirm. So as you edit- watch the clock.

-Please do not submit anything to us that has been staged or performed before. This is a new works festival and we will be doing background checks on all submissions.

-Each author is allowed to submit up to three (3) scripts for our consideration.

-All submissions should be sent via e-mail to: marcie.r.ramirez@gmail.com

-All scripts must be received by March 1, 2011.

Meriwether Publishing Ltd seeks female monologues

Meriwether Publishing, Ltd., plans another collection of contemporary monologues and scenes for publication in Fall 2011 and am inviting you to consider materials. Volume 3 will focus on female issues (ages 15-25). Submissions should be mature and address "issues" but also language sensitive for high school/college classroom discussion and performance.

Monologues should be 4-5 minutes in length and run about 2 and 1/2 to 3 pages in type. Monologues comic or tragic, with three-dimensional characters and "action" oriented rather than "narrative," are highly desirable. Satirical monologues or those that feature eccentric characters in the indicated age range are rare and also desirable. Duo scenes (male/female or female/ female) are also included in the new volume and should be 8-10 minutes in length and run about 5 and l/2 to 6 pages in type.

Authors retain all copyright authority for granting non-exclusive reprint rights and the author copyright contact information is included with each published monologue or scene. A modest author honorarium and/or complimentary copy of the published volume is provided as well.

Please submit materials for priority consideration by 15 April 2011. You may email submissions (ratlifgl@potsdam.edu) or submit to the mailing address indicated below.

Awkward Moments wanted

web site

Freshwater Theatre Company is now accepting script submissions for our Festival of Awkward Moments, running in rep with our production of Desperation Panties at the Gremlin Theatre, May 6-22, 2011.

A Festival of Awkward Moments will run on the following dates and times:
5/8 @ 7:00pm
5/15@ 7:00pm
5/19@ 7:30pm
5/22 @ 7:00pm

The tech will be held at the Gremlin Theatre on 5/7 at 10:00am, with a possible second tech the morning of 5/8 at 10:00am if necessary.

For this festival, we define an awkward moment as “something you would not want to live through but would stop to watch.” Scripts must be 1-7 minutes long and require minimal actors and sets. Scripts will be reviewed and selected by the Awkward Moments Play Committee. Payment will not be issued for any play that is produced, but playwrights’ names will be recognized in the playbill and publicity materials. Scripts may be emailed to submissions@freshwatertheatre.com. Deadline for submissions is March 4, 2011.

We are also accepting applications for directors for A Festival of Awkward Moments. This is an unpaid position but directors’ names will be recognized in the playbill and publicity materials. Directors can send their resumes with a cover letter to info@freshwatertheatre.com. Deadline for applications is March 4, 2011. All directors selected must be available for an introductory meeting on March 26, 2011, 1-2PM.

Directors will be responsible for all casting, providing a rehearsal space, and what minimal props and costumes they find necessary for the scene. We will be happy to help in the procurement of some of these items, but most of it is up to the director and their actors. Actors performing in the pieces will not be paid, but will receive credit in the program.

Once directors and scripts are selected, directors will be sent electronic copies all of the scripts on our shortlist to rank in a top five list to be sent back to Freshwater Theatre. From there, Freshwater will pair the director with the script they are to direct. While every effort will be made to pair directors with scripts in their top five, we reserve the right to assign a play outside of that list as needed.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing your submissions!

From The Onion - Study: Family History Of Alcoholism Raises Risk Of One-Man Show

The study, which asserted that every six seconds an individual from an alcoholic household comes up with the idea to open his one-man show by lighting a cigarette, found that if the urge to incorporate a collage of baby photos into the performance isn't addressed immediately, a young adult may begin experimenting with dangerously melodramatic lines of dialogue, such as, "You don't really know rock bottom until you hit it," or, "People are funny, aren't they?"

Soon, the report said, these performers become addicted to the thought of directly quoting a Shel Silverstein poem at the conclusion of their show, and are heavily predisposed toward wearing a baseball cap for the sequence in which they portray their father showing up drunk to little-league practice.

Connecticut School Will Perform Wilson Play Despite Official’s Objection

Joe Turner will indeed come to Waterbury, Conn. After three hours of discussion on Wednesday night and testimony from community members and other interested parties, including the dean of the Yale School of Drama, the Waterbury Board of Education allowed a public school’s production of the August Wilson play “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” to proceed in February.

In doing so, board members overruled an initial decision by their schools superintendent, who had tried to cancel the play because its dialogue includes several uses of the word “nigger.”

“Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” is part of the landmark 10-play cycle about the African-American experience in the 20th century by Wilson, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. The play had its premiere on Broadway in 1988 and received an critically acclaimed revival there in 2009, drawing, among others, President Obama and Michelle Obama on their New York date night in the fourth month of his presidency.

director seeks plays

I'm looking for new plays to direct this Summer and Fall.

If your work has an optimistic worldview or comedic tone, then you and I are well-suited for collaboration. If your work is tragic, cryptic, or depicts a lot of violence I probably am not the director for you.

I have a particular interest in plays about LGBTQ folks, but this is by no means a requirement.

Any length of play is fine. There is no deadline, and submissions are welcome from anywhere. The venue has not been secured. I'm only looking for plays in English.

I attended The City College of New York where I was a straight A student and won an award for Excellence In Directing. That said, I am relatively new to directing; I have a great deal more experience in theatre as an actor, magician, and in various technical capacities.

I appreciate all submissions and look forward to reading your work.

Roust Theatre Company submission guidelines

web site

We accept new, previously unproduced plays from both literary agents and directly from playwrights as unsolicited manuscripts, with some limitations. 'Unproduced' means not previously seen on a stage in a professional capacity, it does not include being previously produced as a staged reading.

Please send an email to submit@RoustTC.com including a cover note, a brief synopsis and your best 10-page selection from the script (either in a Word document or PDF). If the material interests us, we will contact you with a request for the complete script. Please don't email a complete script in the hope that we might, by some crazy chance, print it and read it. We won't, primarily for two reasons: we just don't have the time and we try and care about the environment by saving paper. If we discover you've sent the complete script your submission will be deleted.

A word to the wise, we only like to receive plays that fit our mission. Keep in mind that Roust focuses on important social matters. This doesn't mean we only accept political plays or dark brow-furrowing dramas, though we happen to produce those as well. Straight plays, musicals, comedies, love-stories, experimental pieces; if it's a social 'hot-potato', we want to read it. We need you, and so does theatre!

SHARE YOUR EXCELLENT 10-MINUTE PLAY WITH THE WORLD

Virginia Premiere Theatre is continuously seeking new, full-length plays

web site

Virginia Premiere Theatre is continuously seeking new, full-length plays to develop and produce. Play requirements: 5 or less characters, no gratuitous sexuality or nudity. Not considering short one-acts, full scale musicals or published plays. We are considering "pocket musicals" or plays with music. Playwright must be willing to refine script in proactive ensemble approach. Particularly interested in plays from abroad.

Artistic considerations focus on plays of inherent social value, plays with a unique voice and plays with inherent theatricality. We prefer not to review plays that resemble television or film scripts.

Virginia Premiere Theatre believes in the vital importance of the playwright to the American Theatre and to the art form in general. We offer reasonable royalties and guarantees as generally defined by industry standards. Housing, transportation and some rehearsal reimbursement may also be available. Virginia Premiere Theatre makes no attempt to "participate" in future playwright royalties; however, we do ask for your best efforts to ensure future playbill and publication credit. Should a play achieve financial largess, we ask that playwrights consider making a generous donation to the not-for-profit company that gave the play its first push into sunlight.

Please send a synopsis, a letter of inquiry, a biography and sample dialogue to:
Literary Manager
Virginia Premiere Theatre
P.O. Box 84
Foster, VA 23056

Or email inquiries to info@vptheatre.com

Please note that synopses must include: a character breakdown, number of actors required, setting requirements and brief text about the play. If these requirements are not met, your inquiry will not be considered.

Scripts via email not accepted. Please do not call.

VPT reads scripts in their entirety, so response time may be protracted. Because of high volume, we regret that we are unable to return manuscripts so please do not send SASE’s.
