The selected playwright will have the opportunity for his/her play to be performed in a free and public reading to be held in May in New York City, directed by and acted in by a New York City creative team. The Araca Group will assume all travel expenses to and from your university.
The deadline for submissions is October 21, 2011. The winning play will be read in December 2011. A release needed to accompany the submission materials will be available on araca.com next week.

John Chatterton's Short Play Lab seeks scripts (produce your own)
Dear Friend in the Theatre,
We are looking for a few more scripts for the Oct. 22 - 23 Short Play Lab. New participants are welcome! The rules are easy-peasy:
Deadline is Oct. 6.
Notification will be immediately after submission. The sooner you get your script in, the more time you have to prepare. Get that script in pronto!
Plays should be 1 - 10 pp. in standard playscript format.* (The shorter the better; shorter plays get priority.) Include a title page, as the first page of the script, with contact info.
Submit scripts in MS-Word.
You produce the play; the SPL provides the theatre (at the Roy Arias Studios, 300 West 43rd Street, NYC).
Productions must be non-union: no showcases please! (And no Equity waivers, either.)
Keep production values to a minimum: costumes and hand props are okay. We provide rehearsal cubes, chairs, and a table or two.
We provide a board op, box office, and venue management.
There are no fees. The SPL keeps the door.
Tickets are $20. Each playwright and director gets to watch his/her show for free. There are no other comps.
There will be a tech rehearsal, on the afternoon of Oct. 22. Plays get a maximum of either 15 mins of tech (1 - 5 pp.) or 30 mins. of tech (6 - 10 pp.).
Every play gets 2 performances, 1 on Sat. and 1 on Sun. Each play will be part of 1 of 2 programs: Program A or Program B, but not both. (As of now, Program A is fully subscribed, but there might be dropouts.) Program A takes place at 7 pm Sat. and 4 pm Sun. Program B takes place at 9 pm Sat. and 2 pm Sun.
We don't do staged readings. Be off-book, please! Plays not off-book during tech will be removed from the line-up.
THE MOST POPULAR PRODUCTION IN EACH PROGRAM RECEIVES A CASH PRIZE OF $100. Winners are determined by polling patrons at the box office.
*12 pt Times Roman; character names in the middle on their own line; line spaces between speeches and between speeches and stage directions; indented stage directions.
The SPL is a lot of fun and a good way to see your work on its feet in a supportive environment. It's also a great way to see actors and directors at work, so you can recruit people for later productions.
To submit a script, send it as an attachment to john.chatterton@gmail.com. Any questions, don't hesitate to shoot me an E-mail!
Thanks,
John Chatterton

The Real Life Drama of Being a Playwright
Gary Garrison of the Dramatists Guild of America and David Dower of Arena Stage talk about the challenges of being a working playwright.
Scant pay and no health insurance, not to mention writer’s block and the constant search for an audience -- all just part of the real-life drama for a playwright trying to make it in America today.
Those and other concerns are being addressed at a national conference, Playwrights in Mind. It’s sponsored by the Dramatists Guild of America and hosted by the Theater of the First Amendment at George Mason University.
I recently talked about it with Gary Garrison, a playwright himself and executive director for creative affairs of the Dramatists Guild of America, and David Dower, associate artistic director at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., and founder of its American Voices New Play Institute.
JEFFREY BROWN: Playwrights in Mind, Gary, the purpose of this is both high and low, right? Big vision and nuts and bolts?
GARY GARRISON: In its simplest form it was a way to bring us all together. We are a national organization; our members are all over the country, so this is a way of getting us all in the same room and talking about those issues that are important to all of us.

The Second Annual Ohio State Newark New Play Contest
web site
Rules and Information:
1) The contest is open to anyone, anywhere; plays, however, must be written in English.
2) Plays must be unproduced (even as a workshop) and unpublished, up to and including the contest deadline.
3) Please use the standard playwriting format for manuscripts.
4) Playwrights may submit as many manuscripts as they like; however, each entry must be in a separate envelope. Please make sure that each manuscript does not contain your name anywhere, but do include your name on a separate piece of paper, along with full contact information, including an email address. (This is to ensure that judging is blind.) Electronic submissions are not allowed.
5) Plays are to be full-length works; a collection of short plays is not an acceptable substitute.
6) The absolute deadline for submissions to be received is April 1, 2012. Winners will be announced on or before September 1, 2012.
7) Third prize is $100, and second prize is $300. The first prize winner will receive $500, and the first-prize play will be given a full production in the spring of 2013, dates to be selected. The playwright is welcome to attend; regrettably, Ohio State Newark cannot defray expenses.
8) Please keep in mind that Ohio State Newark is a one-person department: thus, in addition to quality, the winning play will be selected partly on the basis of ease of production. For practical purposes, 7 or 8 characters is probably the upper limit; for the same reason, unit sets are encouraged.
9) In addition to the prize winners, there will be an indeterminate number of honorable mentions, designated by a certificate (suitable for framing).
10) Winners will be notified by individual emails; unsuccessful candidates will receive a mass email.
11) Following the contest, all manuscripts except the first-prize winner will be shredded.
12) Because of the expected number of submissions, individual critical comments cannot be provided.
13) Send all manuscripts to:
Dave Williams, Associate Professor
Ohio State Newark New Play Contest
192 LeFevre Hall
The Ohio State University at Newark
Newark, OH 43055
If you have questions, please contact me at williams.1343@osu.edu.

WOMEN'S WORK PROJECT
web site
Since its creation in 1994, NPTC and Women’s Work has had the goal of not only helping to develop specific plays, but to support residents’ growth as accomplished and skilled playwrights—to give writers added tools in the practice of their craft and to strengthen their individual voices. Our focus has always been on bringing scripts to production quality. And that hasn't changed.
Created in 2008 with the loss of our black box theatre space, the WOMEN’S WORK LAB retains all of the supportive features of the residency program—it extends the same nurturing environment to emerging and mid-career women playwrights and continues to provide one-on-one guidance in the development of new works. But this format allows us to serve more writers each year (4-6), and creates a larger collaborative group from which members can draw inspiration and energy. The LAB meets monthly (Sundays, 4-7pm), allowing for time in between sessions for writers to continue to develop and revise their work in response to feedback. Members are expected to bring work to each session beginning with the development of an original short play based upon an assigned theme. They also follow a schedule for presenting longer completed works and rough drafts. In this way, the LAB retains NPTC’s desire to develop full length scripts by women writers while still allowing for continuous creativity.
New works are presented in two public forums. The first, in August/September, features short works developed around a specific theme. The second, Off the Page! are individual "Bare-Bones" productions of full-length scripts that are deemed ready for public performances off-book. Artistic Director Melody Brooks leads the LAB and is assisted by guest directors and dramaturges, who attend on a regular basis as active collaborators with the writers.
Writers interested in being selected for membership in the WOMEN’S WORK LAB should send a resume, a 10-15 page writing sample, and a personal statement explaining why they wish to be a part of the LAB, including goals for their own development if selected. (Please note that ALL 3 items are required to be considered.)
Application Deadline January 15, 2012 Apply via email to contact@nptnyc.org with subject line: Women’s Work Application or by post to New Perspectives Theatre Company, 456 West 37th Street, New York, NY 10018. A panel of NPTC playwrights and directors will review the applications. Finalists will be contacted for an interview sometime in February 2012 with new members notified shortly thereafter. The first session of the new LAB will begin late March 2012
NOTE: NPTC has a 20-year history of dedication to the development of writers-of-color and the Women’s Work Project is no exception. We strongly encourage women from all backgrounds to apply.
For more information about the Women's Work LAB, contact New Perspectives Theatre Company at 212-630-9945 contact@nptnyc.org

The 7th Annual InspiraTO Playwriting Contest
web site
Contest closes Dec. 31, 2011
Play Submission Guidelines
Each year the InspiraTO Festival accepts ten-minute play submissions based on a theme on one of the senses. This year's theme is on VISION.
Here's what we need from you, our potential playwright:
A ten-minute play script (not shorter than 8 minutes and not longer than 10 minutes). The sense of *vision (sight) must be an important element of the play.
We accept previously produced plays. The playwright must own the rights to the play up to the end of June 2012 (i.e. plays cannot be owned by a publisher). Any style is acceptable except musicals. Submissions are open to everyone without age and geographic restriction.
There is no submission fee. You may only enter ONE play (so make it count).
To submit your play go to the "submit your play to" link below and:
1. Fill out the submission form, completely.
2. Attach your script in a WORD document or in a PDF file. Hit "submit". The WORD document must be compatible with Window XP. (Note: Vista & Mac formats are not compatible).
3. The cover page should have the title of the play, the playwright's name and the list of characters. The pages should be numbered.
Submit your play to (click on the link): http://inspiratofestival.ca/write-a-play2.php
All submissions must be emailed by midnight (E.S.T.), December 31, 2011. Only those playwrights whose plays have been selected will be notified by January 25, 2012. The plays will be selected by a committee from the Toronto theatre community.
If selected, your play will be performed in Toronto, Canada in June 2012. Between 10 -18 ten-minute plays will be selected and performed. 1st Prize: $500 CDN.
Should your play be selected for inclusion in the festival, you are giving the non-exclusive right to Theatre InspiraTO to produce and perform the play in the 7th Annual InspiraTO Festival (Toronto Canada), in the first two weeks of June 2012 (five performances plus a finale). The InspiraTO Festival will find the cast, crew and market your play.
Authors retain copyright and full ownership of their plays.
The InspiraTO Festival, Canada's largest ten-minute play festival, now entering its seventh season, has produced 82 ten-minute plays with over 190 actors and 80 directors participating. The festival is dedicated to producing high quality ten-minute plays and making theatre more accessible to both audiences and theatre artists.
*A reminder:
The submission must be a play. A ten-minute play is distinct from a sketch, or a skit; it is a compact play, with a beginning, middle and an end. You need a character facing obstacles in pursuit of some specific goal. You need rising action, conflict, and a climactic moment. Your play must tell a complete story.
The submission must be 10 minutes. Generally speaking scripts (including the stage directions, character names and dialogue) that are over 1,900 words are more than ten minutes long on stage. This does not mean that all plays under 1,900 words are under ten minutes. So be wise - use Word Count. It also helps to read the play out loud and time it (keeping in mind all the pauses). You don't want your hard work rejected because it was too long.
The submission must include the theme of "vision/sight" and be integral to the play. Use your imagination i.e. the image of a past lover inspires a character to leave home; a ‘lost dream' fuels a character to action; characters in a play see a burning forest etc. "Vision" or "sight" re-enforces the theme, message or acts as a metaphor for the play.
