ADIRONDACK THEATRE FESTIVAL submission guidelines

web site

ATF’s mission is to produce new and contemporary scripts. To fulfill this mission we welcome the opportunity to meet new playwrights and read their work. We seek unproduced scripts exploring contemporary issues, set in the Adirondacks and across the country utilizing seven actors or less.

However, as ATF does not have a literary staff we cannot handle unsolicited scripts unless submitted by an agent. If you do not have an agent, please first submit the following query: a cover letter, a professional resume, a professional letter of recommendation, a brief synopsis of your script, a ten-page dialogue sample, and a self-addressed stamped envelope should you wish your materials to be returned to you.

Due to the large volume of queries we receive, please allow up to six months for submissions to be read and processed. We will contact you if we wish to read the full manuscript. To ensure your work fits, we also ask that you familiarize yourself with our production history prior to sending a submission. Please note ATF does not provide dramaturgical feedback.

Queries may be submitted to:

Adirondack Theatre Festival

Mahattan Rep Premiere Play Development Program

web site

We have been producing new work here in New York City for 10 years in August. (Over 1000 full length plays and close to 600 short plays.) Putting up a successful play production in NYC is quite a challenge and there are a myriad of factors that either make or break a production.

Our new Premiere Play Development Program is an attempt streamline the process of play production and solve some of the most challenging problems of producing a play in NYC.

There are so many festivals now in town where plays are slapped into theaters with very limited tech, dress and rehearsal time. Often it is twice the play length, or a daytime Tech/Dress for 4 or 5 hours tops where you are stressed out of your mind attempting to perfect your play in this strange theatre while the clock is ticking.

This is the first challenge that our Premiere Play Development Program solves. We offer 3 hours of TECH, and then, on another day, 3 hours of Dress rehearsal time, and before that we offer an additional 8 hours of straight rehearsal in the theatre you will be performing in for a total of 14 hours of theatre time. (And we offer additional rental time in the theatre at a price below most studio space.) More time in the theatre means you won’t be rushed. Your actors will feel at home and comfortable, and you will be able to develop and present your play in a civilized professional manner without having a heart attack from the crazy stress of the “Theatre Festival.” And your play will rock!

The second challenge we help solve is we give you real support. Our Premiere Play Development program is open to only 10 plays to be produced between July 15 and September 4, 2015.) If there are 35 or 100 plays in a 4 week festival how much can you truly be supported? We will be available to help with anything you may need from casting, to hiring a team, to script work, to creative play solutions. This is not a crazy festival.Your play will be part of our Summer season and we will be there to help you along the way with any problems or challenges you may encounter.

Our Premiere Play Development Program is about the work, not about how many plays can be stuffed into a theatre at any given time. It is about making it easy for you to develop your play in the heart of the theatrical world, Times Square, with hours and hours of theatre time, and REAL creative and administrative support to create a great production! You get two performances Prime Time - more if you are selling well.

To submit your 40 - 120 minute new, never been produced before play please email:
  • A brief introduction with detailed information about yourself and your work,
  • the complete draft of your play, a synopsis of the play, the running time of the play,
  • the set and lighting requirements, the playʼs history, (readings, when it was written, etc etc.)
  • your mailing address, and a creative team leader contact email address to: manhattanrep@yahoo.com by Monday June 15, 2015

Please put “PREMIERE PLAY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM" in the subject heading.

You will be considered on a first - come first-served basis. The earlier you submit, the better your chances of being accepted into the program. If we fill up all production development positions early on, we will end submissions. Once submitted, we will get back to you within one week as to your acceptance. We are only accepting 10 plays into this program.

There is no submission fee. Once accepted there is a $300.00 Non-refundable participation fee.

NON-EQUITY ONLY.

“Hilarious!” – TheaterMania
“Go See The Show!" – Michael Musto, Village Voice

“ACCIDENTAL PERVERT” is the true accounting of one boy’s odyssey to manhood via a childhood dominated by pornography – an addiction accumulated after the boy happens upon his father’s collection of XXX-Rated video tapes in a bedroom closet, just to the right of his golf clubs, above the cowboy boots, behind the sweatshirts, all the way up in the top left hand corner. Andrew Goffman takes his audience on a hilarious and self-deprecating journey into a world of video vixens, X-Rated fantasies, and really DIRTY movies with no redeeming value whatsoever. He found the tapes at 11 years-of-age. The addiction controlled him until he was 26. THE YEAR HE MET HIS WIFE.

90 Minutes of Musical Mayhem
Like You’ve Never Seen It Before!

Masterworks Theater Company's Inaugural Season continues with William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. June is the perfect time for some summer loving in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Set in a modern day playground, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Tamilla Woodard, riffs on the culture of uber celebrity where one couple, Oberon and Tatiana are more like the Kanye and Kim of the fairy world. As they fight their immense celebrity, power creates a hysterical ripple effect in the mortal world. Magic, mixed messages, misunderstandings lead lovers awry and will leave the audience questioning which wedding we'll attend before the story ends! Shakespeare has never been as fun and accessible as in this exhilarating new production. William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is preceded in May by Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie.

The goal of Masterworks Theater Company is to present accessible, professional productions of theatrical and literary heavyweights that are widely produced and studied in educational settings at affordable ticket prices to help ignite the audience for live theater for the next generation. A major part of our mission is casting culturally diverse; we strive to amplify the universality of these masterworks by reflecting the face of a new America.

Please send only one submission at a time. Due to the volume of submissions, there may be a delay in our response, but we will respond with an email acknowledging that we have received your submission.

We favour work that
- Incorporates classical, traditional, mythological, or archetypal characters, themes, or allusions.
- Features classical or traditional forms, styles, and techniques.
- Is an adaptation of a classical, traditional, or mythological story or play.

We are interested in work that is aware of theatrical history and is interested in looking at the past to create new work in the present.

Stylistically, we have tended to favour work with elements of non-realism or stylistic hybridity. We have tended to prefer literary and poetic work.We have tended to look for plays with a magical, fantastical, or symbolic element.

Writers in Residence 2016 submission opens

web site

2nd March - 29th May 2015

The Writer in Residence programme for 2016 is funded by the generous support of Joanna Munro. Thanks to Joanna, Gladstone’s Library can continue to offer residencies that enrich the community of writers and readers that we have here at the Library.

SUBMISSION OPENS: MONDAY 2ND MARCH 2015

POSTMARK DEADLINE: FRIDAY 29TH MAY 2015

Currently in its fourth year, Gladstone’s Library’s competitive Writer-in-Residence programme provides space and resources for four writers whose work engages with liberal values.

By liberal values, we do not mean views aligned with any particular political ideology.

We mean a commitment to freedom and social justice, tolerance and respect of difference, open-mindedness coupled with intellectual curiosity, generosity of spirit and a willingness to learn from others.

Founded by Gladstone in 1894, the Library is committed to maintaining his legacy of engagement with social, moral and ethical questions by helping people reflect more deeply on the questions that concern them.

It does not claim to provide any of the answers but it does offer a comfortable, sociable and stimulating environment together with unparalleled resources for creative study including renowned collections of historical, cultural, theological and political materials: 33,000 books come from Gladstone’s own library and many contain annotations made by Gladstone himself.

Through reflection and writing during their stay, Writers-in-Residence help us redefine liberal values for the twenty-first century.

Their engagement might be critical, supportive or merely observant.

Gladstone was a polymath with interests ranging widely across religion, history, social justice and politics from Classical times to what was then contemporary culture.

The scope of these four residencies is equally wide and we welcome fiction and non-fiction writers.

Gladstone read on average five books a week so you can be sure that the Library has something to offer you.

The connections he made between the various disciplines he delved into helped shape his particular form of liberalism.

Gladstone's Library is unique – it is the only residential library in the United Kingdom.

It provides a meeting place dedicated to dialogue, debate and learning for open-minded individuals and groups who are looking to explore pressing questions and to pursue study and research in an age of distraction and easy solutions.

All are welcome at the Library regardless of gender, race, class, sexual orientation or religious affiliation.

The Writer-in-Residence is expected to be at ease with this inclusive ethos.

Four places will be awarded.

The dates of the tenures are February, May, September and November 2016.

Each residency includes:
  • Accommodation in an en-suite room for a period of four consecutive weeks;
  • All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner); morning coffee and afternoon tea (telephone calls or alcoholic drinks are not included);
  • Travel expenses to and from the Library at the start and end of the residency (HMRC mileage allowance or standard bus/train fares within the UK);
  • An honorarium of £100.00 per week.

Each winning author must:
  • Attend the official London prizewinning ceremony on Monday 12th October 2015;
  • Participate, where possible, in any other publicity events held before or after their residency;
  • Respond to media/press enquiries as appropriate and by prior agreement with the library’s warden, Peter Francis;
  • Submit two blog posts to the Gladstone’s Library website;
  • Lead a creative writing workshop to not more than twenty participants;
  • Give an evening talk about any aspect of their writing and/or creative life;
  • Abide by the normal terms and conditions for guests staying at Gladstone’s Library.

Terms and Conditions:

YouthPLAYS seeks plays and musicals

web site

YouthPLAYS seeks exciting, entertaining and challenging plays and musicals for young actors and/or audiences for publication! Founded by playwrights Jonathan Dorf and Ed Shockley, we currently represent over 150 authors and publish scripts for teen and pre-teen actors, as well as works for professional theatre for young audiences performed by adults. Our mission is to showcase material that has at least some significant teen or younger characters and/or that is of strong youth interest.

Of particular interest are one-act plays for high/middle school festivals and competition (30-35 minutes maximum, comedies very welcome), adaptations and parodies of well-known titles, plays that address teen issues in innovative and theatrical ways (episodic and vignette-style structures welcome), multicultural (and especially bilingual) plays and short plays for teen/pre-teen performers for classroom and competitive use—but we are open to any well written scripts that are appropriate for our market. For shows geared toward young performers, large (or very large) or flexible casts and a preponderance of female roles are a major plus. We recommend visiting our website and getting better acquainted with us before submitting. Scripts should be submitted directly through the site at http://youthplays.com/submit_play.php.

MONSTERS ON STAGE A Call for Monologues and Short Plays

web site

Monsters on stage provide a unique dramatic perspective on what it means to be human in the 21st century, either through relationship, revelation, contrast or cataclysm. The thematic possibilities are endless: transformation, identity, in- or exclusion, survival, love, terror and more. We’re looking for pieces that dig deep into the human need - conscious and unconscious, psychological and neurological - for monsters across time and cultures.

As Prospero says of Caliban in The Tempest: “This thing of Darkness I acknowledge mine.”

Publication: An anthology of monologues, short plays and essays will be published. Authors whose writings are selected for this anthology will receive a publication contract.

Production: In addition to publication, several monologues and short plays will be selected for production at Transylvania University (perfect, right?) in the fall of 2015. Opportunities for prosthetic makeup for characters are encouraged. Playwrights whose works are selected will receive a production contract.

Playwrights at any level of their studies or careers are invited to submit original 3-to-5 minute monologues and short plays as Word documents to mdixon@transy.edu.

BMI Librettists Workshop

web site

The Workshop’s goal is to develop the skills unique to musical theatre bookwriters through round-table presentations and critiques of its members’s ongoing musical theatre scriptwriting projects. Current and past musicals are analyzed and discussed – the successes as well as the failures. Librettists are encouraged to team with BMI Workshop composers and lyricists for actual collaboration on new musicals. The Workshop is moderated by veteran Broadway and Off-Broadway literary manager Nancy Golladay.

Accomplished writers in all genres are invited to submit excerpts from works published, produced or in progress. Samples from any medium, dialogue or narrative, are allowed; but at least 10 pages of the material must be in dramatic script form. Submissions must also include at least one sample of comedy writing, and theatrical scenes in this genre are preferred to stand-up or sketch comedy. The Workshop meets Monday evenings in New York City from September through May. Prospective members must make their own living arrangements in the city or be able to commute weekly. The Workshop does not charge membership or application fees.

The application form can be downloaded here. Electronic submissions are preferred, though information for applying via snail-mail can also be found on the application. Application materials such as bios and script samples can be sent as .pdf or .doc files to librettistworkshop@bmi.com. Writers should be sure that your first initial and last name appear on each page of your support materials.

The 2015 application deadline for the Librettist Workshop is June 1.

BMI Musical Theatre Workshop

web site

Composers and Lyricists

Each September a first-year group is formed. Applications are accepted until the August 1 deadline. All submissions are screened prior to auditions, which are normally scheduled the first Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday after Labor Day.

 Please send completed applications to:

Patrick Cook
BMI
7 World Trade Center
250 Greenwich Street
New York, NY 10007-0030

With your application, which you can download, please submit the following:

Composer: Three (3) contrasting compositions on CD - up-tempo, comedy song, ballad.

Lyricist: Three contrasting lyrics - up-tempo, comedy song, ballad.

Composer/Lyricist: Three (3) contrasting songs on CD - up-tempo, comedy song, ballad.

Please provide a short introductory set-up for each song or lyric.

At the auditions, composers must be prepared to perform at least two contrasting theatrical compositions; lyricists are expected to have copies available and to recite samples of their theatrical lyrics.

During the first year, composer and lyricists are paired off (writers may write both words and music) and are asked to create appropriate songs based on specific scenes from various plays, short stories and novels. The writers perform their assignments, and various approaches to the common assignments are discussed by members of the Workshop and the moderator. Every effort is made to insure that each writer retains his or her individual style. In addition, the writers study the requirements of the libretto, and analyze and discuss current and past musicals. The First Year culminates in the creation of a 10-minute musical.

In the Workshop’s final phase (Second Year), teams work on a musical. The Workshop functions as a forum and a sounding board for works in progress, as music and lyrics are critically evaluated and open dialogue is encouraged.

At the end of each Second Year, participants present excerpts from their musicals in progress, and the Workshop Committee determines which writers from that group will be invited to join the Advanced Workshop. Not everyone is asked. This Workshop is intended for writers of professional caliber who are expected to contribute to the vitality of the musical theatre scene.

The Workshops meet one afternoon a week for two hours, under the guidance of distinguished writers and directors. There are no restrictions on membership and no fees.

12 Peers Theater is accepting play submissions

web site

12 Peers Theater is accepting play submissions for a 2015 – 2016 New Play Podcast Series from April 10th – June 15th, 2015.

12 Peers Theater is accepting unsolicited submissions of new full-length plays to be recorded and released monthly on a podcast about and featuring new plays. In an effort to maximize exposure for playwrights and assist them in securing full productions, 12 Peers Theater will record and release readings of new plays to be aired on our 12 Peers Podcast throughout late 2015 and 2016.

We understand that there are many forms of theatrical storytelling, but here are a few guidelines that will help you determine if your play is right for us. We will not consider plays that have had a full production elsewhere. We will only accept full-length plays, no one-acts, collections of one-acts, or musicals. Due to recording limitations, plays should be able to be performed with no more than 6 actors (doubling permitted) As a company we are drawn to plays with themes of social and cultural identity, plays that are politically, socially, and ethically relevant, and plays with mythic themes. We are also drawn to plays with a clear sense of dramatic action, an excellent use of language, and a creative use of theatrical resources.

If you would like to submit please send your play, a brief synopsis, and a biography to Matt Henderson, 12 Peers Theater’s Literary Manager, at mhenderson@12peerstheater.org by June 15th, 2015.

Blue Monday Review

web site

Blue Monday Review is a triannual publication that draws inspiration from the works of Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut crafted great stories that celebrated truth and beauty while maintaining a sardonic wit that makes our hearts swell with bitterness and joy. If your work can stir up even a sliver of that feeling, we want to see it. We publish prose, poetry, visual art, and anything in between that highlights the peculiar while also being literarily excellent. Visit www.bluemondayreview.com/#!guidelines/c1enr for details!

We also run the Storytime Challenge, a monthly audio/video contest.

We are publishing six anthologies this fall and are searching for new plays of any length that fit in the anthology topic areas. Considered plays can be unproduced of have a long production history; full-length, one-act or shorter; dramas or comedy – but not musicals. Plays submitted by May 15, 2015 will receive full consideration.

Adirondack Plays will pay royalties to the authors based on sales of the anthology. Playwrights retain all the rights with the plays for productions and for future publication.

Adirondack Plays does not publish single editions of plays, all submitted plays must fit into one of the following anthologies:

· Mostly Female - Community Theater throughout the country have the same problem -- more actresses than actors. While most plays have more male than female characters. This anthology will have plays -- both full-length and one-acts -- which have more roles for women (or non-gender specific roles).

· Social Justice - Plays with a cause. The Social Justice anthology will feature plays concerning race, feminism, poverty, wealth inequality, immigration or other issues of social justice.

· LGBTQ - The LGBTQ Anthology will focus on the issues faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and questioning individuals in the 21st century. All types of plays are welcome including romantic comedies, serious drama and everything in between. The only requirement is that non-heterosexuals are the main characters.

· Black Box - Black box plays have very basic technical arrangements, such as limited sets, simple lighting effects, and an intimate focus on the story, writing, and performances rather than technical elements. Plays for Fringe festivals and other experimental theater are encouraged.

· High School One Acts - One act plays are popular for high schools to get more drama students the opportunity to perform. One act plays are also often used in competitions. For this anthology, we are looking one act plays that are appropriate for high schools, meaning no sex and minimal violence. Note: characters are not limited to high school age.

· For Churches - Church theaters are in need of high-quality plays. Adirondack Plays for Churches will focus on plays with messages of love, forgiveness and generosity. Plays do not have to be specifically Christian, but should not contain vulgar language or sexual innuendo. In addition to full-length and one-acts, shorter plays that can be incorporated into worship services will also be accepted.

Stillwater Theatre Company invites submission of new one-act and full-length plays

web site

Stillwater Theatre Company, a non-profit professional company based at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC, invites submission of new one-act and full-length plays to be considered for staged readings and potential full production.

As part of a private women’s college, Stillwater has a need for works with strong women’s roles, small casts, and simple technical production requirements. However, this does not mean that we want to exclude men from our productions, or discourage the submission of works that that would involve an equal number of men and women in the cast. Play submissions are accepted January 1st—June 1st each year with a final decision to be made by August 1st. Due to the small size of our staff and the sheer number of scripts we receive, we are only able to accept one script at a time from the same author.

Stillwater produces one full-length play per year. We will workshop the play in a staged reading with our students in the Fall and produce the revised play the following Spring.

Submission Requirements:

Go to web site to see all the paintings
web site

Due May 22
Email all Submissions to: submissions@exquisiteCorpseCompany.com

The world of the Vienna Secession will be brought to life in an immersive artscape of visual and performance experiences. The plays will tell the stories behind the paintings, inside the minds and lives of the artists and the worlds they portray.

Look at the paintings, see which ones interest you.

Clicking on a painting will take you to a page with further information on the artist and the painting.

Choose a painting and write your play.

Your play should be no more than 15 minutes.

Your play should incorporate some of the biography of the artist and explore what it means for the piece to come alive. Who are the women that haunt these works? What story does the work tell? What other characters would appear?

Playwrights are not limited to one painting. Write for as many or as few paintings as moves you.

Abingdon Theatre Company’s THE LAST RESORT PLAYS Benefit Challenge

web site

Abingdon Theatre Company
THE LAST RESORT PLAYS BENEFIT CHALLENGE SERIES:
An evening of short plays
NYC/Metropolitan Area Playwrights

Dear Playwright,

You are invited to submit an original 10-minute play to Abingdon Theatre Company’s THE LAST RESORT PLAYS Benefit Challenge. This effort engages artists who support a theatre dedicated to new plays.

Our LAST RESORT PLAYS challenges your creativity to write an original play that will be presented as a staged reading on the set of Abingdon’s next production MALLORCA by Sheldon Bull and directed by Donald Brenner. We are seeking plays written in any style that reveal a fresh plot, sufficient conflict and a running time of 10 minutes, maximum. Plays are due at midnight on May 13, 2015. SERIES A performs on Tuesday, June 9 @ 6:30pm & 8:30pm, and SERIES B performs on June 16 @ 6:30pm & 8:30pm. Are you ready? Here are the guidelines. Please read carefully!

SCRIPT GUIDELINES:

The play must be set in the living room of a modest island villa. There is a small balcony, which overlooks the ocean.

One character must make a last effort to resolve, salvage or confront a situation, or escape an irreconcilable problem.

Write for a cast of 2-3 actors. At least one character must be mid-30s in age or YOUNGER.

We prefer scripts that can be staged without relying on stage directions. If stage directions are necessary, please keep them to a minimum.

Your script will be presented as a staged reading in accordance with AEA guidelines. Keep production values to a minimum. Costumes are at the discretion of the director and the willing cooperation of the actors. No hand props can be used.

Plays should be in standard script format: 12 point font, 1” margins on all sides, and character names on a separate line. Be sure to number all pages.

Submit scripts in MS-Word - preferred - or PDF format.

Scripts longer than 10 pages – title and character breakdown pages are not counted – will NOT be considered. Regardless of the number of pages, the running time MUST be no more than 10 minutes!

You may only submit one script for consideration.

Playwrights must attend both performances of the staged readings. Please specify your availability for SERIES A (6/9), and/or SERIES B (6/16). If you are available for both dates, let us know that, too!

We encourage you to attend rehearsals, if possible. The schedule will be determined later.

The deadline for script submission is midnight, May 13.

We strongly encourage original scripts developed for this presentation.

GENERAL GUIDELINES:

Abingdon presents the play. We provide the actors, directors, stage manager, rehearsal space and the theatre (the 56-seat Dorothy Strelsin Theatre at the Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex, 312 W. 36th Street, NYC).

ALL participants are donating their time and talent, and HELPING TO RECRUIT AN AUDIENCE. Our goal is to fill every seat! There is no fee or cost to the playwright. There is a ‘pay-what-you-will donation’ for audience members to attend the staged readings.

Each playwright and director will attend the staged readings of their script in designated seating.

Every play gets two performances on the same evening.

Please make sure you follow all submission requirements.

HOW TO SUBMIT:

Email your scripts to LastResortPlays@abingdontheatre.org. You will receive an auto-generated reply; if you don’t, you have used the WRONG email address.

Write in the subject line: LAST RESORT PLAYS / Your Name

In the body of the email send:

The Rewrite at Primary Stages ESPA

Writing is the easy part. Rewriting can be downright impossible. Luckily, Rogelio Martinez and Josh Hecht are at Primary Stages Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA) to help.

As soon as you finish your last line of dialogue, the need for rewrites begins. This class will begin by establishing individualized writing goals to conquer over eight weeks. Whether you choose to embark on a rewrite of your entire play or focus on individual scenes, writing exercises and in-class discussion will inspire you to ask new questions of your play, look at it from various angles, and deconstruct it with your fellow writers. You will leave this class with a stronger version of your play, and with the tools you need to transform any first draft into a polished, compelling work that's ready to submit.

THE REWRITE

Primary Stages Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA)

Wednesdays with Rogelio Martinez (Writer, Wanamaker’s Pursuit at Arden Theater Co.)

Thursdays with Josh Hecht (Director, Christine Jorgensen Reveals at New World Stages)

Classes begin in June. Payment plans available.

Only completed projects will be considered and finalists will be asked to submit the full libretto, score, and complete recorded demos. Must be unpublished with no prior class-A production and requires proof of underlying rights if the work is based on copyrighted material.

Submissions will be accepted through June 15, and there is no application fee. Electronic submissions only – all requested files should be placed in a single folder (Dropbox or similar data posting site), and the submissions form (below) should be completed and submitted on fwdtheatre.org.
