Aboutface’s Newvember New Plays Festival 2022 Call for Submissions

Website

Deadline: July 15, 2022 5PM IST

The 10th annual NEWvember New Plays Festival
3rd to 6th November 2022 at Smock Alley Theatre

NEWvember is a festival of rehearsed readings of new plays that takes place over one weekend in Dublin, produced by the theatre company AboutFACE. There is no fee for submissions and all plays are read blind of name or gender by our panel. The spirit of NEWvember is to provide a dynamic, interactive and comfortable place where writers can hear their plays read by professional actors, and discuss their work and creative process with the audience.

2019 marked NEWvember’s third year in Dublin after 5 years in New York. AboutFACE co-created and co-produced NEWvember at the Carpenter Shop Theatre in the village of Tivoli in upstate New York, with our partners Tangent Theatre, from 2011 to 2015. During this time, NEWvember was highly successful – drawing large audiences, including breaking the box office record for the venue on successive nights; and finding massive interest from writers – by its fifth year, submissions reached nearly 500 plays a year and rehearsed readings of new work by over 30 playwrights had been presented, while several plays developed at the festival have gone on to Off-Broadway and regional American productions. NEWvember then moved to Dublin, Ireland, where the festival was held in 2017 at Belvedere House, in 2018 at The New Theatre and in 2019 at Smock Alley and The Civic. 2020’s festival during the pandemic took place online.

We are now pleased to invite submissions of new plays for the 2022 NEWvember festival:

CRITERIA FOR SUBMISSIONS
  • submitted plays should be previously unproduced (we will consider plays that have had readings before but are still in development)
  • plays should have a cast size of 2-8
  • plays should have a running time of 30 to 120 minutes
  • we will only accept one submission per writer each year
  • we are interested in plays from playwrights based in Ireland, and Irish playwrights around the world
  • we ask that the writers of the chosen plays attend the reading of their play towards its further development and to be present for a post-reading Q&A with the audience
  • there is no fee for submissions
  • while we are open to all styles and subjects, we do have a preference for narrative and character-driven stories. Plays will be selected based on their originality, range, production potential, narrative quality and emotional resonance
PROCESS OF SUBMISSION:

Please submit your play via our online application form at

https://aboutfacetheatre.ie/newvember/

You will be asked to includeyour play as a PDF (without the writer’s name, email or other identifying marks on any page throughout the script – to aid our blind reading process). The script should include a character list. Please ensure the file name of your play matches the name of the play e.g. theweir.pdf

Within the form, you will be asked to include your name, play title and contact details (location, email and phone), which will be kept in a database unseen by the reading panel.

SUBMISSION DATES:

The closing date for submissions is Friday July 15th 2022 (5pm Irish time).

Please note that these criteria will be applied strictly and any submissions made after the closing date or not following the submission guidelines will not be considered. In addition, our festival’s reading panel will not be able to provide feedback on specific plays or on the status of your application.

The writers of the plays that have been shortlisted will be contacted in September and will be asked to send any updated version of their play, as this will be the final version considered and the version read at the festival if chosen.

The invited plays will be announced in October.

Introducing NYC’s fastest growing competition.

PRIZES:

We offer up to $7,500 in Prizes. $3,500 alone goes to the best play or musical.
Can you find another festival that gives away this much money in prizes? Our winners are selected by the festival’s team, so it’s not simply some “popularity contest” based on whoever brings in the largest audience. Sometimes the most “non-glitzy” smallest budget productions with the fewest audience members win first prize, simply because it was excellent. We love sincere, heart-felt performances, and honest writing.

Here’s a chance to have your play live on a New York City Stage! Submit your work to the Spring/Summerfest festival competition. Accepting plays and musicals of all genres between 5-90 minutes in length. The New York Theater Festival has been a haven for playwrights for 17 seasons - 10 continuous years of activity. Read below to find out why!

Why is New York Theater Festival a mecca for new and original plays?

Simple.

We offer:
  • A quality venue.
75 beautiful red fabric seats . A stage the size of your average 2 bedroom apartment in Manhattan (30’x22’) with plenty of backstage space, room in the wings, a large dressing room complete with mirrors and sink, and a clean and functional bathroom.
  • Need set/prop pieces? No problem.

What other festival offers you the use of 100 set props/furniture in their storage for free? Not only do we invite you to use our items, we also offer free storage for all your hand props for the duration of your run. It’s no fun double parking your truck outside of theaters for every performance, only to find your windshield sporting a new parking ticket. It’s annoying lugging all your props, set items, and costumes back and forth on the subway throughout the length of your run. Don’t sweat it. We have space- and that’s not easy to come by in NYC! Check out our props: https://newyorktheaterfestival.com/props/

  • Easy to use technology.

Where else will you get a lighting plot of 65 lights, complete with LED lights that can create a flush in a full range of deep colors for your scenes.

  • If MUSIC is the food of love, play on!

Need music? We also have a good upright piano you can use

  • We offer very long techs.
Do you know how important it is to have ample tech rehearsal time?
For a Full-Length (60-90 minute) we give 4 hours for your tech.
For a One-Act (30-45 minute) we give you 2.5 hours for your tech, For a Short (5-20 minute) we give you 60 minutes for your tech.

What can you accomplish with short tech rehearsals, or none at all? Absolutely nothing (say it again!) We don’t want to risk your show looking miserable during your run because you did not have enough time to prepare. We want you to feel confident with how it will look. That’s why we offer a generous amount of tech time. (After all, time is money!)
  • What’s more important than advertising your show?
Many festival websites do not advertise your show. Many that do will have mundane descriptions and a thumbnail of a poster. Check out our pages with previous productions. Large posters, detailed information, and a catchy blurb of your show… That’s more like it! You can share the link without embarrassment and send it to your family, friends, colleagues, and community. All cast and crew from all productions are granted free tickets to see all of the other shows in the festival!
Check out our posts:
https://newyorktheaterfestival.com/winterfest-festivals/shows-date-2019-winterfest/
  • No seasonal volunteers
One of our principle team members is always at the theater to support you during your tech, box office times, and performances. You will always see a familiar face! Feel free to ask for help or special guidance to make your performance a success. Your questions will be answered in a matter of hours from the festival’s team. You will never have to wait days for a response. Our staff is knowledgeable and experienced, providing you with real answers and a personal touch.
  • Award ceremony
An unforgettable award ceremony at the end of the festival to honor your talent in front of your artistic colleagues, similar to the Oscars!

Plays are considered on a first-come first-served basis. The earlier you submit, the better your chances are of having your script invited to the festival.  Each applicant is fully responsible for all elements of their production, including directing, casting, stage-managing.  We know exactly what you need to make your show a success and we welcome you into our community of playwrights and theater innovators!

A+ Playwriting Contest For Teachers 2022

Website

Deadline: June 30, 2022

Fifty years as one of the leading play publishers for the educational market has taught us that some of our best-selling shows are written not by professional playwrights, but by teachers who create a play based on the specific needs of their drama program. Once published, these plays are quickly embraced by other teachers who share the same opportunities, challenges and limitations that seem universal in schools.

We want to encourage the development of quality plays written specifically by teachers and other educators. Our A+ Playwriting Contest for Teachers is open to all teachers employed at an accredited K-12 public or private school in the US or Canada. All plays submitted through this contest must have been produced within the past two years at the school where the playwright teaches.

Submissions will be accepted on an on-going basis with a June 30 cutoff each year. All manuscripts accepted for publication will be considered contest finalists. The contest winner, selected from contest finalists and announced September 30, will receive a $500 royalty advance and a one-time $500 donation to the school theatre program where the play was first produced.

Contest Rules

Only entries submitted in accordance with all rules will be eligible for consideration.

Playwright must be a current or retired faculty member at an accredited K-12 public or private school in the US or Canada.

Only entries submitted with an Official Contest Entry Form will be considered.

Only entries that have been fully staged at the teacher’s school no more than two years prior to the submission date will be considered. We encourage you to take advantage of this production to revise your script as needed before submitting your manuscript.

All entries must be accompanied by proof of production in the form of a copy of the program, a newsletter or newspaper article, a review, a photo or a letter from the school principal.

Contest entries must meet all Pioneer Drama general guidelines and requirements for play submission, which can be found at pioneerdrama.com/playwrights/submit.asp.

Individuals currently published by Pioneer Drama Service are not eligible for this contest. Pioneer Drama Service employees and their families are also excluded.

All manuscripts submitted for this contest will automatically be simultaneously considered for our annual Shubert Fendrich Memorial Playwriting Contest, which is open to all individuals not previously published by Pioneer Drama Service. See pioneerdrama.com for more details.
