Website

Deadline: August 31, 2022 11:59 PM EDT

CATCO is seeking script submissions of plays for young audiences for our new work festival in late November/early December. We define work for young audiences as plays for audiences aged 5-18 and their families where the intended audience could be, for example, 5-7, 10-14, or 15-18, as well as families with youth in that 5-18 age range.
  • Submitted scripts should be full-length, between 40 minutes and 2 hours in length.
  • The play may be unproduced or have had one or two developmental readings/productions, but it should not be a finalized script.
  • Three plays will be selected – one for a developmental production with limited production support and two for readings.
  • There is no fee to submit.
  • For the selected scripts, the playwrights of the readings receive a $300 fee.
  • The playwright of the developmental production receives a $500 fee.
DEVELOPMENTAL PRODUCTION:Rehearsals:
  • Rehearsals: Nov 21 – 23, Nov 28 – Dec 1
  • Performances: Dec 2 – 4, Dec 7 – 10
READINGS:
  • Rehearsals: Dec 6 – 9
  • Public Readings: Dec 10 and 11

This festival is an opportunity for playwrights to work on projects in the early phases of development that would benefit from a workshop process. If they choose, the playwright will have the opportunity to make rewrites during the rehearsal process and will receive audience feedback after the production or reading in a moderated talkback. The play may be unproduced or have had one or two developmental readings/productions, but it should not be a finalized script. We hope that the playwrights will be involved in the rehearsal process, either virtually or in person, depending on the playwright’s location. Rehearsals take place on evenings and weekends. Travel is not provided.

TO SUBMIT:

To submit, email literary@catco.org.
  • In your submission email, please briefly introduce yourself and your work as a playwright, including if you have connections to Columbus or Ohio, provide a short description of the play, and let us know what you hope to gain from a workshop.
  • Please attach the script as a PDF titled “TITLE [Playwright Last Name]”
  • If submitting more than one script, please include them all in one email and let us know the one to focus on if there is only time to read one.

Theatre Now New York accepting submissions from across the country for Musical Writers Lab

Website

Deadline: ongoing basis

Theatre Now New York (tnny.org) is accepting submissions from across the country for its Musical Writers Lab, a community of musical writing teams that meet biweekly for feedback and developmental opportunities for both traditional and genre-bending new work. There are two chapters; the local New York Group meets in person in midtown Manhattan, and the National Group meets on zoom. Members of both groups have received readings, workshops, developmental productions, and other professional support from Theatre Now. For more information, and to submit your team to either group, visit https://www.tnny.org/musicalwriterslab

The support we will offer our lab members is varied and wide ranging based on the needs of the writing teams and may include individual and group consultations, mentoring, dramaturgical sessions, writers groups, office resources, rehearsal space, and networking. For those with musicals ready for production, we will guide you towards developmental lab productions with Theatre Now or through other theatre companies and other performance and production opportunities.

You may apply as a team (book writer, composer, lyricist or any combination with 2 or more collaborators) or as an individual (as the sole book writer/composer/lyricist).

Acceptance is through a highly selective and competitive application process. The application will require you to submit one full length musical (book and music) that is complete, at any stage of development, and has not yet received a major production, as an example of your work for evaluation. If chosen, your participation in the group encourages work at any and all levels of development. You may submit multiple applications if you’ve collaborated and wish to continue with different sets of team members.

The submission of your full-length musical is the corner-stone of your application. In other words, it is the libretto and the songs that you submit that will be used as the criteria for the quality of your work. Having said that, the full length piece you submit should be an example of your work that you are most proud of. It does not need to be fully realized or considered finished, in fact it can be at almost any stage of development. You must, however, submit at the very least a libretto (full or partial), and three songs. You may describe along with your submission, the stage of development, include an outline of the piece or any other qualifying information, and we will take all that in consideration when evaluating. We are not looking for perfection, we are looking for potential. You and your writing team for this musical, will be the members on the application. You may submit more than one musical through separate applications with different team members. Each application will be considered independently.

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and we will contact those we’re interested in when slots become available.

Application Guidelines and Requirements
  • Full length musical (book and music) that has not yet received a major production, as an example of your work for evaluation. The musical you submit may be at any stage of development.
  • Bios and resumes of each writing team member
  • Production history of all the applicants, individually and/or as a team
  • List of current projects you are working on indicating the stage of development
  • Information about any potential commitments for production, grants, applications in process, etc.
  • Future projects you have thoughts and ideas about or would like to work on
  • An artist statement from each applicant with future goals
  • A team statement of your shared vision and aesthetics
  • In addition to the submission of your full length libretto and MP3’s of at least three of the songs, you may also submit additional samples of other works-in-progress
  • In person interviews will follow for those chosen at the final stage of the application process
  • There is no cost to apply and no dues or fees will be required if accepted

For the NY Chapter, it is advantageous that the Lab members chosen are available to meet on a regular basis at our New York office and studio, as available. We currently meet twice per month on Sunday afternoons in a midtown studio for Lab member presentations, guest speakers and discussions. The National chapter meets online vía Zoom the alternate Sundays of the month.

Please note: You must complete and submit your application online in one sitting. You will not be able to save your application and return to it later. Therefore, we recommend you prepare your application answers off-line and have your files ready to upload.

We have included a PDF version of the application HERE for your convenience in preparing your materials.

The Autry seeks full-length plays

Website

Deadline: August 2, 2022

Native Voices is accepting submissions of full-length plays (60+ pages) by American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and First Nations playwrights addressing all themes and topics.

2023 Playwrights Retreat and 29th Festival of New Plays

The Retreat and Festival bring artists to Los Angeles to work on a selected number of plays through a rigorous directorial and dramaturgical commitment for 8–10 days in June. The Retreat culminates in public staged readings of the plays at the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles. Selected playwrights receive artistic support as well as an honorarium; out-of-town artists receive roundtrip airfare plus lodging in Southern California.

Selection Process

Full-length plays (60+ pages) received by August 2, 2022 will be read and evaluated. A select number of playwrights will be invited to submit formal proposals detailing their developmental goals should their play be chosen for the short list. Scripts will then be sent to a committee of nationally recognized theatre artists for further evaluation. With their help, Native Voices selects up to four plays for the Playwrights Retreat and Festival of New Plays. Playwrights will be notified in March 2023.

A Note About the Native Voices Distance Dramaturgy Process

Months prior to residencies, selected playwrights participate in dramaturgical conversations with an assigned director and dramaturg. Workshops with these creative teams and a cast of professional actors commence once the playwright arrives on-site. It is important to note that these conversations and workshops are playwright driven, allowing the writer to shape their own developmental path. Selected playwrights should be prepared to dedicate adequate time to this process prior to arriving on-site.

To submit, fill out our online form and upload your submission materials here: Native Voices Script Submission Form

Please do not send treatments or outlines. Previously produced plays should be submitted under the 2023 General Submission for Production Consideration. Playwrights are encouraged to make multiple submissions (up to three per event), but selection will be limited to only one play per playwright, per event.

Shoestring Radio Theatre accepts submissions from writers.

Website

Deadline: ongoing

We are always looking for good, original radio plays of any genre. We have produced dozens of scripts submitted by writers from all over the world who originally found us on the web.

Format
Your script needs to be a radio play (i.e. no stage directions or visual cues). We do not accept stage plays or screenplays. Radio drama scripts should include only things you can hear—i.e. dialogue, sound effects and music cues (stings, transitions, etc.). Radio drama scripts should also include a synopsis of the story, and a cast list of characters. There is no industry standard for radio drama script layout, so we will leave the exact formatting up to you; just make sure that it's easy to distinguish the dialogue from the sfx and music.

Length
To fit into our weekly 30-minute broadcast, plays can be a maximum of 28 minutes long (most scripts are about one minute per page but it depends on the formatting). Therefore, we accept 25-28 minute plays (which air in one part) and 50-56 minute plays (which air in two parts). We also accept shorts, which can be up to 10 minutes in length.

Fame Not Fortune
As a non-profit organization which really does operate on a shoestring budget, we do not pay for scripts at this point in time. However, if we produce your play, we absorb all production costs and it will air nationally on public radio stations across the country. You will also receive a copy of the finished production.

Agreement
If we accept your script, we will send you a writer's agreement, which:Grants us permission to produce your script
Grants us Public Broadcasting rights to the finished production
Grants you, the writer, all rights to the original script

Feedback Policy
Unfortunately, due to the volume of scripts we receive, we cannot provide feedback on your scripts. Please do not be discouraged if we reject your submission. We reject scripts for any number of reasons, including excessive length, unsuitable content, and sometimes writing quality. Unfortunately, even if we really like the idea, we do not have time to work with writers to improve their scripts. Our advice is to keep writing as much as possible to gain experience, show your scripts to others for feedback, and take writing classes if you feel it would be helpful. Good luck!

Mailing Address and Email Address
We accept both hard copies of scripts and email submissions (Microsoft Word, PDF or Text file).

Please use the contact info below.

Our print magazine is published in A5. Please consider this if you have a specific intention regarding the formatting of your work.

We do not consider previously published or self-published submissions. We do not consider work that is on sale. If your work is displayed on your website or social media channel at the time of submission, we may ask you to take it down ahead of the release of our paperback issue.

2022 Hear Me Out New American Monologue Competition & Labor Day Fest Submission: WHEN WE NAME IT

Website

Deadline: July 22, 2022 Noon, EDT.

Please fill out this form thoroughly before attaching a PDF of your submission.

Only one entry per individual.

  • Golden Ear $2,500
  • Silver Ear $1,350
  • Bronze Ear $975
  • Honorable Mention $500
  • The August van der Becq Memorial Prize for Daring $2,001

2022 THEME: WHEN WE NAME IT

In a world in which  social norms, political systems, economic laws and the natural environment are all facing existential challenges, the language we use to describe the world around us takes on new urgency. In order to change a thing, we first need to name it.  In order to care for something or someone it matters that we name it. If we want to understand something that confuses or frightens us, first we must name it.

Since human beings created language, the labels we assign to things, people, places, activities, relationships, complex issues, etc. etc. have influenced our view of them. There are things we carry with us throughout life that feel so important, so powerful, that sometimes we dare not name them for fear that naming them might invite them to consume us. And yet, oftentimes the act of finally naming something we’ve been living with results in a newfound freedom. And, yes, we also name people, pets, places, projects and creations.

And sadly, these days, our choices regarding how we identify certain things can even threaten to tear apart our most treasured relationships.

Your 2022 Hear Me Out entry must in some way refer to some naming and its impact on the characters you’re revealing. As always we hope you will find your own way into our festival theme and we do not require the use of any specific words, language or stylistic choices.

We only ask that your character grapples with our festival theme in some way.

And remember: your monologue must introduce us to a character who is talking to another person (or group of people). Short stories and essays will be disqualified.

If you are about to submit something that's been sitting in your desk drawer for years rather than something brand new written fresh to the festival prompt, think again. Your odds of actually winning with a piece of writing that was not organically created in response to the prompt are slim to none. Consider that writing a brand new monologue won't take you the same time and energy as writing a whole new play or screenplay.

Consider that by investing between 5 and 20 hours you could see yourself clear to cashing a check for $2,500. Do yourself and your writing a favor and invest a little time, thought and effort into making something special for this unique opportunity.

FINAL DEADLINE: July 22, 2022 Noon, EDT.

EARLY BIRD DEADLINE FOR ALL THOSE WHO WISH TO BE CONSIDERED FOR
The Alvin Epstein Memorial Prize for Solo Performance
or
The Most Memorable Character Prize
Entries must be received by Noon, EDT on June 15, 2022.

YOU WILL RECEIVE FEEDBACK FROM YOUR AUDIENCE TO HAVE THE POSSIBILITY TO IMPROVE ANY FUTURE RUN OF YOUR PRODUCTION IF YOU DESIRE

Here’s a chance to have your Play or Musical live on a New York City in Manhattan Stage!

Accepting plays and musicals of all genres between 5-90 minutes in length. The New York Theater Festival has been a haven for playwrights for 18 seasons - 10 continuous years of activity. Read below to find out why!

Why is New York Theater Festival a mecca for new and original plays?

Simple.

We offer:
  • A quality venue.
75  seats. A stage the size of your average 2 bedroom apartment in Manhattan (30’x22’) with plenty of backstage space, room in the wings, a huge dressing room complete with mirrors and plenty of storage
  • Need set/prop pieces? No problem.
What other festival offers you the use of 85 set props/furniture in their storage for free? Not only do we invite you to use our items, we also offer free storage for all your hand props for the duration of your run.  It’s no fun double parking your truck outside of theaters for every performance, only to find your windshield sporting a new parking ticket. It’s annoying lugging all your props, set items, and costumes back and forth on the subway throughout the length of your run.  Don’t sweat it.  We have space- and that’s not easy to come by in NYC! Check out our props:
https://newyorktheaterfestival.com/props/

  • Easy to use technology.

Where else will you get a lighting plot of 65 lights, complete with LED lights that can create a flush in a full range of deep colors for your scenes. You are also free to use our projector that projects a back stage image of 21×12′. Our lighting and sound boards are extremely easy to use even for those that had not previous experience. You do not need to be a tech person to use them.

  • If MUSIC is the food of love, play on!

Need music? We also have a good upright piano you can use

  • We offer long techs.
Do you know how important it is to have ample tech rehearsal time?
For a Full-Length (60-90 minute) we give 4  hours for your tech.
For a One-Act (30-45 minute) we give you 2 hours, For a Short (5-20 minute) we give you 60 minutes.
What can you accomplish with short tech rehearsals, or none at all offered somewhere else? Absolutely nothing (say it again!) We don’t want to risk your show looking miserable during your run because you did not have enough time to prepare. We want you to feel confident with how it will look. That’s why we offer a generous amount of tech time. (After all, time is money!)
  • What’s more important than advertising your show?
Many festival websites do not advertise your show. Many that do, will have mundane descriptions and a thumbnail of a poster. Check out our pages with previous productions and you will see immediate the difference. Large posters and detailed information.
You can share the link of the post that we create for you without embarrassment and send it to your family, friends, colleagues, and community.  All cast and crew from all productions are granted free tickets to see all of the other shows in the festival!
Check out our posts:
https://newyorktheaterfestival.com/winterfest-festivals/shows-date-2019-winterfest/
  • Prime performance hours
We give you only ideal prime time slots, 30 minutes of ample set-up time before performances, and since the festival runs for 2 months, each production has time to breathe.
  • No seasonal volunteers
One of our principle team members is always at the theater to support you during your tech, box office times, and performances. You will always see a familiar face!  Feel free to ask for help or special guidance to make your performance a success. Your questions will be answered in a matter of hours from the festival’s team. You will never have to wait days for a response. Our staff is knowledgeable and experienced, providing you with real answers and a personal touch.

  • Award ceremony
An unforgettable award ceremony at the end of the festival to honor your talent in front of your artistic colleagues, similar to the Oscars!

  • LAST, BUT NOT LEAST: YOU WILL BE TREATED WITH THE RESPECT AND APPRECIATION THAT YOU DESERVE AS A WRITER AND AS AN ARTIST.

Submit your play to NYC theatre’s best kept secret TODAY.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

For eleven weeks in Fall 2022 and eleven weeks in Spring 2023, a cohort of eight puppetry and object theater artists (or pairs or teams of artists) will meet to share progress on developing new work. The Nancy Dean Award for Lesbian Playwrights 2022

Website

Deadline: August 1, 2022

The Nancy Dean award for Lesbian Playwrights is to honor a woman who was at the forefront of Lesbian, queer, gay, genderqueer, gender-nonconforming, trans, intersex and people of color movements. We honor her focus and writing on Lesbian relationships before the time of the Stonewall rebellion. Her writings were the precursor to social change. In that spirit of struggle and often hidden desire we encourage the submission of new plays that address the conflict of lesbian, queer or gay, trans and nonbinary women struggling to live and love their best lives. In these times of social definition and refinement the age-old conflict of acceptance and the right to live our true lives as we truly are is still our continuing fight which is refined and embolden by each new generation.

We understand people have their own language for their gender and sexuality. We are open to submission from people who are lesbian, queer or gay, trans and nonbinary.

As we are a small family foundation with an all-volunteer board, we must rely on nominations to identify potential recipients. We are asking professors, teachers, artistic directors, directors, literary managers, actors, writers, and others to nominate promising writers. As we want to be inclusive, we will allow people to self-nominate.

The following are our guidelines:
  • Writer is lesbian, queer or gay or nonbinary;
  • Writer has written at least one play;
  • Writer is writing plays about lesbians;
  • Writer is committed to writing plays and furthering her/their career;
  • Writer is interested in receiving the award.
Please send a letter(pdf) describing why your playwright should receive this award and a full-length play (pdf) to openmeadowsfdn@gmail.com. In your letter, please be as detailed as possible in up to 2 pages. Include the writer’s resume and website or other social media links. The deadline for submissions is August 1, 2022. We will announce the recipients October 31, 2022. We have been granting three awards of $5000, $2500 and $1250.

THE PGE 4TH ANNUAL FACES OF AMERICA MONOLOGUE FESTIVAL

Website

Deadline: August 31, 2022

In November 2022, we will host the 4th Annual Faces of America Monologue Festival.
(Date/Location to be announced)

To submit your monologue for consideration there are just a few simple rules:

Your monologue must be less than two minutes in length.

We can't stress this enough. If we think your monologue is longer it will not be considered.

Your monologue should represent America's incredible diversity. (BIPOC, AAPI, Latine, and LGBTQIA+ artists are all strongly encouraged to apply). Monologues can be historical or futuristic, cultural or political, comedic or tragic, spoken or signed!

Include the word "kindness" somewhere in your monologue.

If this word does not appear in the monologue it will not be considered.

Send your submission to us by the deadline of August 31st using the form below.

Submissions are limited to two per writer. Late entries will not be considered, no matter how much you beg.

We are incredibly excited to read your submissions!

A selection committee will read all submitted monologues that meet the above requirements and pick those that best reflect the many voices that make up America. Submitted monologues remain anonymous to our readers throughout the selection process.

If your monologue is selected for inclusion in the festival you will be contacted by October 15th. We will then work with you to cast your monologue from The PGE casting pool and your monologue will be performed at the fourth festival in November 2022 as well as published into an anthology.
