PlayFest 2011 Version 2.0 (November 3 to 6, 2011) is seeking new full-length plays or musicals based on or inspired by works of classic literature or historic events, famous persons or advances in science. We are also seeking plays that deal with the complex social issues of our time. These events, persons or advances can be from any age in history, including the present. We prefer plays that require six actors or less, and have an interest in one-person shows. However, even in the case of one-person shows, we are not looking for history lectures, or museum piece adaptations that are faithful to a fault, but rather dynamic new theatrical versions of classic stories that speak to the contemporary mindset.

In musical submissions, we will be a little less strict about the cast size, but are only interested in musicals based on or inspired by the same criteria as the plays mentioned above.


1. Not have received more than two professional AEA productions

2. Not have received a Broadway or Off-Broadway production

3. Not have received Orlando production in current form

4. Not be published for general distribution with the rights held by the Publisher

This year we will select seven new works to be presented as readings. Two those may go on to be developed in workshops. Playwrights will receive a stipend, travel and housing expenses. Some plays may go on to be fully produced as part of a subsequent Orlando Shakespeare Theater season.


At this time we are not looking for full scripts. We are asking for a simpler initial submission:

Non-musical submissions should include a cover letter, bio/resume, a one-page synopsis, five pages of sample dialogue, a character breakdown with doubling. The mailing address, email address and DIRECT phone number of THE WRITER must be on the cover letter. Musicals should include all of the above and the most recent Demo CD of the show. Please do not send full scripts until requested to do so and do not submit electronically.

On Broadway Thespians script submission guidelines

The On Broadway Thespians takes great pride in not only staging time-tested productions ranging from the classics (like Shakespeare, Moliere, Ibsen, Chekov, etc.) to the contemporary (Neil Simon, Frank Gilroy, Dan Goggin, Richard O'Brien, etc.), but also in the fact we heartily welcome new original material from new emerging Playwrights. Adaptations are likewise considered, but must meet necessary criteria to distinguish it from other sources which might compromise the theater's right to use such material.

In addition, OBT also encourages new Directors to come forward with proposals to direct or stage a play for us. Traditionally, On Broadway Thespians has required that selected directors have experience directing a stage production beforehand. However, first time directors may be considered with a named mentor and/or producer approved by OBT. This is not intended to discourage first time directors, only to assist them in such an enormous undertaking. The names of known producers or assistant directors should be submitted at this time as well. If you require one but have not acquired such a mentor yet, we may be able to assist you.

Those wishing to direct a play for OBT, will be assigned a date in which they will need to appear before the On Broadway Thespians board to present their play proposal. Items of interest needing to be covered in their proposals are listed below. Please read carefully and be as thorough as possible.

A special Play Reading Committee will sort through all submissions, and then present the more promising scripts to the OBT Board for final read through for the final selection process. The Board will evaluate each play, based on their merits, and then choose a final play schedule for the coming calendar year (January through December). Upon that time (December 1st), everyone will be notified, from Playwrights whose material has been chosen, to those who weren't.

A brief overview of the play's plot, sets and special needs
Will you be Directing this play? Or are you open to having your play directed by someone else?
For first time Directors, who will be mentoring or co-directing with you? Or do you require help in finding someone?

For Playwright submissions, an estimate of Royalties, or your terms of compensation?
Selected scene(s) for reading that best depict(s) the story and action of the play (15 minute max)
A list of (and brief description of) the primary lead and supporting characters, their genders and ages (if a musical, their vocal parts). The total number of cast members will also be helpful.
Will this play be precast? If so, how many characters? Do you have the cast in place already?
An estimate of how many stage and tech crew members you will require.
Any notable facts about the play that might be of concern to the theater, the players or the community at large (e.g. nudity, adult language and or physical contact, or controversial material). This is not to say that any of these items would automatically preclude the play from being produced at OBT, only that all of these factors will need to be disclosed and considered by the selection committee and board of directors before a decision is made.
Performance dates preferances? Are there any date ranges that you are absolutely not available?

Playwrights, please note, material submitted WILL NOT be returned, so please do NOT send us your only copy. Simultaneous submissions are fine, as long as it does not interfere with OBT in the event the group decides to stage your play. Again, you will be notified by December 1st, if your script is chosen or not for staging in the following year.

Final notifications will be done either by email (please supply us with an email address in which you can be reached) or by snail mail (supply an mailing address recognized by the US Postal Service).

Description and Mission

The Alpha Project (the RTI / Prairie Meadows Playwright-in-Residence Program) will commence during the 2011-2012 season, supported in part by a Prairie Meadows 2010 Community Betterment Grant. The Alpha Project is planned to continue as a core program of RTI. The mission of the Alpha Project is to showcase new works for the stage, and to provide a training ground for local writers.

A. 2011 Alpha Project Competition Submission Guidelines.
The Playwright-in-Residence will be chosen from submissions to the Alpha Project’s
nationwide competition. Guidelines for submission are as follows:

1. The 2011 competition guidelines will be announced in March, with a submission deadline of April 30th (postmark). The judging committee will review the submissions and choose the winning play. The decision will be announced by June 15, 2011.

2. The playwright must have a demonstrated connection to the state of Iowa, by birth, residency (past or current), education, etc. The playwright should detail this connection in a cover letter accompanying the script submission.

3. There is no restriction as to genre, style or language, except as follows:

a) At this time, neither musicals nor plays written expressly for children are eligible.

b) The play must be full-length (between 75-130 pages, when typed in manuscript format [see below]). At this time, one-acts, either individually or in collection, are not eligible for the competition.

c) The play must be un-produced and unpublished. The winning playwright will be expected to grant the Repertory Theater of Iowa the exclusive right (but not obligation), for one year following the announcement of the prize, to produce the world premiere of the play.

d) The play must be set in standard manuscript format, typed or printed from a computer, using standard Courier 12 pt font. No handwritten manuscripts will be accepted.

4. any information on individual playwrights. Therefore, for plays being submitted in hard copy, the play’s bound title page must bear the title of the play only. No other identifying inform- ation should appear in the bound manuscript. The playwright must include an unbound title page, bearing the title of the play, the playwright’s name and any other pertinent identifying and contact information; this unbound title page will be kept separate from the manuscript and unseen by the judges.

5. Playwrights may submit plays via e-mail. The play should be formatted in a Word or PDF file and submitted to James Serpento, project coordinator at navarre_2@yahoo.com. Please put “RTI Playwriting Contest Entry” in the subject line.

a) Deadline: E-mailed submissions must be received by 11:59 pm on April 30, 2011.

6. Playwrights may submit plays in hard copy via U.S. Postal Service. If doing so, please submit 2 copies of the play to the following:

a) Both copies must be bound. Simple cardstock binders are sufficient; there is no need to use heavy 3-ring binders.

e) Deadline: Submissions mailed via U.S. Post must bear a postmark before 11:59 pm on April 30, 2011.

Entries being judged will be identified only by the title of the play; judges will not be given

B. The Judging Process

1. Each play will be read by a five-member judging team, made up of up to three Repertory Theater of Iowa company members and two other non-RTI members of the Des Moines theatre community.

2. Following this initial screening, the top five plays will be chosen and discussed at a judges’ meeting; from this pool of five, the three prize-winning plays will be chosen.

3. Decision of the judges shall be final.

C. Awards and Expectations

1. The winning playwright will receive an award of $1,000. 2nd and 3rd place playwrights will receive awards of $250 and $100, respectively.

2. The Repertory Theater of Iowa shall have the right, but not the obligation to produce the world premiere. This right shall extend for a period of one year following the date of announcement of the prize.

3. Once a production is scheduled, the winning playwright will be expected to collaborate with the director and production team in the weeks prior to a production. RTI maintains the right to all final decisions regarding artistic direction in connection with the production, and ultimate creative control is reserved for the company and its chosen director.

4. The winning playwright will be expected to be in attendance during one of the weeks of the play’s production and to offer at least one lecture, class or other reasonable presentation to interested parties (writers, audience members, etc) during that time. The winning playwright will receive no additional compensation for this service.

5. Repertory Theater of Iowa/Prairie Meadows and/or the Alpha Project shall provide some measure of assistance in the winning playwright’s travel and housing during the period of his/her attendance.

We are looking for NEW scripts for our regular Shelterskelter show. We are also looking for new scripts for a possible "adults only" late night show which would follow the regular show. This is a chance to push some boundaries and experiment with more mature content. Deadline for submitting scripts is June 1, 2011. • The plays should be inspired by the theme: “Tangled Webs”
• Scripts may be a maximum of 10 pages.
• Each playwright may submit up to two scripts.
• Please do NOT include the phrase “Tangled Webs” in the text of the play.
• We are looking to mount premiere productions of submitted plays. If the play has previously received a fully-mounted production, please do NOT submit. Plays that have been given public readings are allowable.
• Longer one-act or full-length plays will not be accepted for consideration.

McKinney Repertory Theatre is pleased to announce The 1st Annual MRT New Play Competition. MRT is committed to providing quality entertainment for the community through cultural education and inspiration. We will begin our 9th season in Fall of 2012 and would like to encourage new playwrights to share their inspirations and hard work with us. MRT offers the competition winner the chance to see the playwright’s work fully realized on stage, and we hope that the winning play will go
on to numerous productions elsewhere as well.

An MRT committee will choose one play as the Winner to fully produce sometime in our 2011-1202 Season. A second play will be chosen as Runner-Up and that play will receive a staged reading in the 2011-2012 Season. The Winner and Runner Up will be announced on or before July 31st, 2011.

2. Only original, full length, unpublished scripts will be accepted.
3. Plays must not have been previously produced nor have won awards (although previous readings are acceptable).
4. Adaptations, translations, musicals and children’s plays will not be accepted.

Gi60, The worlds only international one minute play writing festival is once again looking for submissions from playwrights across the world. Gi60 premiers no less than one hundred new plays each year, each one lasting no longer than sixty seconds. Fifty new plays , are performed live in the UK at the Viaduct Theatre in Halifax, while on the other side of the Atlantic, another fifty are brought to life at the New Workshop Theater in Brooklyn, New York. All one hundred plays are filmed and available to watch on You Tube or via the Screaming Media web site.

With no cultural boundaries, Gi60 produces a diverse, fast paced, funny and thought provoking one hundred minutes of original theatre reflecting the views of its worldwide contributors, and all available to download to your computer or mobile device.

Gi60 is a totally inclusive theatrical event, we believe that anyone with an idea can write a play and enter the festival. Entry to Gi60 is free and open to everyone, everywhere, making it quite possibly the most accessible writing festival there is. All you need is an idea and an email address.

How To Apply
Gi60 is open to everybody; all you need is an idea and an internet connection. Since its inception in 2003, the Gi60 festival has premiered hundreds of new pieces of work written by people of all ages and backgrounds from around the world. This year it could be you. So If you have an idea or something to say, why not write a play?

Please submit a cover letter, a synopsis, and a resume along with one copy of the play. Cover sheet of play should have title, author, author's address, author's telephone number, and author's email address (if available). Plays should be neatly bound or stapled on the left-hand corner (no loose pages and no binders, please). All submissions must include a standard SASE for correspondence. Or, if playwrights wish to have their works returned, an appropriate SASE must also be included.

Selected plays will be presented for 10 performances. Playwrights will receive a small stipend.

Theater Company of Lafayette, Colorado, Seeks Comics-related Short Plays
Playwrights! Come play with us! Theater Company of Lafayette is seeking short comedic sketches to be included in a production titled, “Comic Con con Comedy.” Please submit short plays that follow these guidelines: 2 to 8 minutes in length. Simple staging requirement; unusual costumes are acceptable. PG-13 or tamer content. Cast size should be 7 or fewer. Plays that include female characters are encouraged. The sketch needs to be related to the “comic con experience,” which could include comic books, fan conventions, superheroes, manga, etc. Amusing flights of imagination are encouraged! Multiple submissions from the same author are welcome. Deadline for submissions is January 12, 2012. New participants are welcome!

The rules are easy-peasy:
Deadline for May 21 - 22 Lab is Apr. 22. Notification will be immediately after submission, so you have more than a month to prepare your production. Get that script in pronto!
Plays should be 1 - 10 pp. in standard playscript format.* (The shorter the better; shorter plays get priority.) Include a title page, as the first page of the script, with contact info.
Submit scripts in MS-Word.
You produce the play; the SPL provides the theatre (at the Roy Arias Studios, 300 West 43rd Street, NYC).
Productions must be non-union: no showcases please! (And no Equity waivers, either.)
Keep production values to a minimum: costumes and hand props are okay. We provide rehearsal cubes, chairs, and a table or two.
We provide a board op, box office, and venue management.
There are no fees. The SPL keeps the door.
Tickets are $18. Each playwright and director gets to watch his/her show for free. There are no other comps.
There will be a tech rehearsal, on the afternoon of May 21. Plays get a maximum of either 15 mins of tech (1 - 5 pp.) or 30 mins. of tech (6 - 10 pp.).
Every play gets 2 performances, 1 on Sat. and 1 on Sun. Each play will be part of 1 of 2 programs: Program A or Program B, but not both. Program A takes place at 7 pm Sat. and 4 pm Sun. Program B takes place at 9 pm Sat. and 2 pm Sun.
We don't do staged readings. Be off-book, please! Plays not off-book during tech will be removed from the line-up.
THE MOST POPULAR PRODUCTION IN EACH PROGRAM RECEIVES A CASH PRIZE OF $50. Winners are determined by polling patrons at the box office.
*12 pt Times Roman; character names in the middle on their own line; line spaces between speeches and between speeches and stage directions; indented stage directions.
The SPL is a lot of fun and a good way to see your work on its feet in a supportive environment. It's also a great way to see actors and directors at work, so you can recruit people for later productions.

Play Publishing: How do I get my play or musical published?

Playwright Submission Guidelines for Eldridge Plays and Musicals

Please submit plays and musicals suitable for performance by community theatres and junior and senior high schools. We welcome shows on all subjects, however, shows with explicit adult content or graphically defined situations do not fit our market. For musicals, please include a CD of at least several songs and sample pages from the score.

Include a cover letter giving us a brief description of the story of the play, its running time, its performance history, and if it has earned any awards. In addition, we would like to know a little about your writing experience.

Let us know if this is a simultaneous submission.

Our standard royalty contract is 50% of royalties and 10% of copy sales. Playwrights are paid twice a year. Outright purchase contracts are limited to extremely short pieces (such as skits) and some religious plays.

We receive hundreds of manuscripts a year and want to give each careful attention and review. That's why it takes us about 2 months to respond. Please do not send more than one script or collection book at a time, as flooding us with your work will not be to your benefit.

Special Tips for Submitting

We like all kinds of plays and are always open to new ideas. Generally speaking, our customers like plays with more female than male roles or flexible casting in which roles can be played by either men or women. This is not a hard-and-fast rule, however.

Don’t worry too much about formatting—just be sure to number your pages. Our editors are more concerned with content.

We strongly recommend having your script workshopped, read, or performed. Scripts rewritten after this process are of a much higher caliber.

Include any reviews, production photos, or DVDs, if available.

The May 2011 Play of the Month theme is pilgrims.

What are pilgrims? In addition to the ones who celebrated the first Thanksgiving in what would later be the USA?

Consider this excerpt from the Wikipedia article on pilgrims:
Modern era

Many religions still espouse pilgrimage as a spiritual activity. The great Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca (now in Saudi Arabia), is obligatory for every able Muslim. Other Islamic devotional pilgrimages, particularly to the tombs of Shia Imams or Sufi saints, are also popular across the Islamic world.

A modern phenomenon is the cultural pilgrimage, which while also about personal journey, involves a secular response. Destinations for such pilgrims can include historic sites of national or cultural importance, and can be defined as places "of cultural significance: an artist's home, the location of a pivotal event or an iconic destination."

An example might be a baseball fan visiting Cooperstown, New York. Destinations for cultural pilgrims include examples such as Auschwitz concentration camp, Gettysburg Battlefield, the Ernest Hemingway House or even Disneyland.

Cultural pilgrims may also travel on religious pilgrimage routes, such as the Way of St. James, with the perspective of making it a historic or architectural tour rather than a religious experience.

Secular pilgrims also exist under communist regimes. These devotional but strictly secular pilgrims visited locations such as the Mausoleum of Lenin or Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, or the Birthplace of Karl Marx. Such visits were sometimes state-sponsored.]

4. Make sure you have your name and your email address on the title page of the script.

6. There is no fee for submission - and no payment given for the plays selected. Do not send a submission if you are expecting monetary compensation.

7. The NYCPlaywrights selection decision is final and NYCPlaywrights reserves the right to select no plays from those submitted.

8. The selected play will be videotaped as a reading during an NYCPlaywrights meeting and posted shortly after, during the month of May.

9. The playwright will be asked to review the video recording before it is made public.

10. The video recording of the play reading will be posted to the NYCPlaywrights YouTube account and from there embedded into the NYCPlaywrights blog. The embedded section may be an excerpt of the play reading rather than the entire reading.

Mario Fratti-Fred Newman Political Play Contest 2012

The Castillo Theatre is seeking new scripts for the stage that engage the political/social/cultural questions affecting the world today for its fourth annual Mario Fratti-Fred Newman Political Play Contest. The purpose of the Political Play Contest is to encourage the writing of such plays, and to provide a stage for scripts that might not otherwise find one.

While Castillo recognizes that in the broadest sense, “all theatre is political,” the contest is seeking politically progressive plays that: look at social and/or economic problems and challenges; explore possibilities of social transformation; and, reflect the the contest is seeking politically progressive plays that reflect the concerns and interests of communities and/or which explore the importance of community. Castillo also encourages scripts that experiment with form and seek new ways of seeing and new ways of experiencing theatrical performance.

The plays submitted to the Fratti-Newman Contest may be written in any style, set in any historical time, geographic or imaginary location, contain any number of characters and be of any length. The plays must be in English and cannot be musicals or adaptations. No scripts will be considered that have previously been submitted to this contesxt, have received a produced production or won other contests. Only one script per playwright will be accepted, nor will resubmitted plays be considered.

The contest is judged by a team from Castillo and otherof distinguished theatre artists. The winning script(s) will receive a reading and/or a full production at the Castillo Theatre in New York City during the theatre’s 2012 summer season.

All scripts should be submitted in hard copy and must be accompanied by:

• Statement statement of the political/social/cultural questions that the playwright is engaging with the script;
• A a brief synopsis;
• Character character breakdown, including specific gender, age and ethnic requirements, if any;
• Set set requirements, including how many sets and any special effects needed;
• 100-word biography of the playwright;
• a current email contact address in order for us to acknowledge receipt of the script and be able to contact you during the selection process

Please note:
• Scripts will not be returned.
• Castillo will not give critical feedback to playwrights/contestants.
• Contest winners are required to sign a letter of agreement, which will include but not be limited to granting the right for Castillo to produce one or more readings and/or a full production of the winning play.
• Contest winners are responsible for travel expenses or any other expenses incurred as a result of participating in the development of the play with Castillo, or as a result of attending the reading and/or full production.

All scripts must be postmarked by October 1, 2011. The winner(s) will be publicly announced at the Otto René Castillo Awards for Political Theatre in New York City in May of 2012.

Could you write like Bernard Shaw?

The Shaw Society / T F Evans award

Offered for the first time in 2011, this award in memory of the late T F Evans will be made for a sequel or additional scene for a Shaw play, reflecting not only his literary style but his wit and wisdom.

The judges for the award will include Sir Michael Holroyd (Shaw’s biographer), Barbara Smoker (ex-president National Secular Society), Sam Walters (Artistic Director, Orange Tree Theatre), Sylvia Syms (film, TV and theatre actor) and Alan Knight (chair of the Shaw Society)

The Shaw Society / T F Evans award is open to all ages, professions and nationalities; there is no charge for entries. Further information and guidance, and details of how to enter, are given below.
An award of £500 will be made for the winning entry, which will also be given a rehearsed reading

Closing date for entries: 31 July 2011

The award

In the first year, the award will be made for an additional scene (a prequel, a sequel or an inserted scene) for one of the following plays by Bernard Shaw:

• Mrs Warren’s Profession
• Candida
• John Bull’s Other Island
• The Doctor’s Dilemma
• The Apple Cart The judges will look particularly for entries which reflect both the literary style and the “wit and wisdom” of Shaw.

Shaw himself wrote additional scenes for a number of his plays, notably for the film versions of Major Barbara and Pygmalion (including for the latter the Embassy Ball scene, which introduces an entirely new character). He also of course added extensive Prefaces and Postscripts to many plays, which in some cases suggest what any additional scene might be like.

An example of an additional scene could be an epilogue to Candida, ten years later, in which Marchbanks returns to the Morell household; or a scene inserted between Acts 3 and 4 of Mrs Warren’s Profession in which Kitty Warren tries to find out from Sir George and Frank Gardner why Vivie has fled back to London. But we would also welcome entries which not simply extend an existing Shaw play but subtly bring it up to date, by making reference to contemporary themes or debates. What might Shaw have written if he were still alive at the beginning of the 21st century? (An example might be an epilogue to John Bull’s Other Island, set a hundred years after the events of the play, reflecting on more recent Irish history.)

Entries for the award should be a scene of between 20 and 45 minutes’ playing time. The title page should name the play and where the scene is to be inserted. Since the judges will not be told the names of entrants, please include your name only on the title page or covering email. The closing date is 31 July 2011 and the winner will be notified by 31 October 2011.

One-Minute Play Festival submissions wanted

The ArtsWells Festival Of All Things Art, is proud to present the Twelfth Annual International One-Minute Play Festival, and is looking for entries. There is a cash prize of $75 for first place entry, $50 for second and $25 for third. There is also an eventual plan to publish a collection of the plays from this year’s and previous festivals. Notable past entrants included Academy Award Winning Director Arthur Hiller, Illustrator of the Cartoon Strip Shermans Lagoon; Jim Toomey, Classical Guitarist; Liona Boyd; The Canadian Comedian Ensemble The Arrogant Worms; Author of Hard Core Logo Michael Turner to name a few.

We have four entry formats: Silent, Performed, Video/Audio and Excuses, all are eligible to win the aforementioned prizes. The only stipulation is that it must be performed, read or viewed in one minute or less. There is also the ever popular category of Excuses. This will include excuses as to why you can’t enter. Like the other entry formats this will boil down to creativity and execution and will be judged on letterhead, composition, humor and originality. This means that the subject matter and manner of the play or excuse itself is entirely open to personal interpretation.

All entries to be judged must be submitted by Sunday July 31st, 2011.

Entries may be submitted via mail, videotape, audiotape, e-mail, or in person but must be available on the night of July 31st where the live contestants will be judged during the ArtsWells Festival.

All entries will be judged during the performance night. Winners will be contacted by telephone or e-mail by September 1st, 2011.

All entrants shall receive a copy of the eventual publication for their own records, and the play’s performance rights shall remain privy to that of the author. Anyone interested in submitting an entry in a form other than that of print are encouraged to do so. Those submissions shall be kept in the archives of the International One-Minute Play Festival to be drawn upon for inclusion in a future documentary based upon this continuing festival.

Script Submission Suggestions

Raconteur is a small company with fewer than 15 members. We typically perform scripts which allow us to be as minimal as possible or include only one or two locations. We read many scripts to find the ones we feel fit us best. The following are a few suggestions to help you to have the best possible opportunity:

We accept scripts of all lengths. We do not accept screenplays.
Providing a cover page including the title, playwright name, contact information, a little background on the playwright, cast size, genre, approximate run time, and a brief synopsis is helpful.
Electronic submissions are strongly preferred.
Including a production and publication history if applicable is strongly preferred.
Proofread to be certain there are no serious grammatical errors.
Consider audiences when choosing a title, think about how it will look on a poster or in a press release. It should compel audiences to come see the show.
Try not to include stage directions or costume design unless they are imperative to tell your story.
We suggest limiting your cast of characters to no more than 8 and your list of settings to no more than 2.
Special interest is given to writers from the Central Ohio area.

Although we accept material year-round, we do not guarantee that every script will be read. What you need to know before you submit a script.

Please be sure to have your script formatted according to our script style sheet.

In general, we're looking for scripts that can be used in worship services to focus the attention of worshipers on specific themes or life issues that the pastor can then address in the sermon or message that follows. Thus, the best scripts dramatize and heighten the issues without always resolving them; resolution is left to the sermon or is subtle enough that the sermon can tie it in. Our scripts are intended to be supplementary to the message of the day, and not be the main event themselves.

Writer's Guidelines:

  1. Sketches should be from 4 to 7 minutes long and use 1 to 6 characters.

  2. Include a statement of purpose, time requirements, list of characters, prop list and any unusual sound or light requirements.

  3. Scripts should be sensitive to the unchurched. Avoid Christian-club jargon and insider church terminology.

  4. Must have broad appeal to both evangelical and mainline audiences.

  5. Most of our scripts are not obviously religious in nature. Rather they pose human situations that can be addressed from the pulpit following the sketch.

  6. No elaborate staging or costumes.

  7. Problems should be identified without sarcasm or overly critical tones (hope-based vs. critique-based). We do not want scripts that scold the audience or try to shame the viewers. Scripts that ridicule the hypocrisy of Christians are not for us.

  8. Avoid didactic lines. Specifically, avoid making "less spiritual" characters mere foils who present questions and/or problems for "more spiritual" characters to resolve as "teachers."

  9. Prefer everyday situations to extreme situations. Remember that there is enough drama, whether painful or humorous, in most people's daily lives. For example, the temptation to tell a lie is much more common than the temptation to kill someone. Build your scripts around situations most people encounter in the normal course of living.

  10. Avoid predictable endings. Prefer instead a conclusion that is unexpected but still a reasonable extension of the theme of the sketch.

April's Play of the Month deadline approaches

In March NYCPlaywrights announced its Play of the Month project. The deadline for submissions is Sunday April 3, 2011, 11:59 PM so you have time to send in your 10-minute play based on the theme of the life and/or works of William Shakespeare.


1. Send only one ten minute play per author to info@nycplaywrights.org.

2. The script submission should be sent by email, with the play itself as a file attached to the email. File format should be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) or .pdf.

3. The script should be in standard playscript format. If you are not sure what that is, see this page on the NYCPlaywrights web site:


Plays that are not in standard format will be rejected immediately.

4. Make sure you have your name and your email address on the title page of the script.

5. Plays can be from anybody, anywhere in the world, but must be primarily in English (a few non-English phrases are acceptable, but the phrases must include English translations in production notes or stage directions.)

6. There is no fee for submission - and no payment given for the plays selected. Do not send a submission if you are expecting monetary compensation.

7. The NYCPlaywrights selection decision is final and NYCPlaywrights reserves the right to select no plays from those submitted.

8. The selected play will be videotaped as a reading during an NYCPlaywrights meeting and posted shortly after, during the month of April.

9. The playwright will be asked to review the video recording before it is made public.

10. The video recording of the play reading will be posted to the NYCPlaywrights YouTube account and from there embedded into the NYCPlaywrights blog. The embedded section may be an excerpt of the play reading rather than the entire reading.
