Share Your Theater Story: Larry Rinkel

L-R my three great actors from the Maplewood production: Steve Shoup (nominated for best actor), Alice Rothman-Hicks, and Jack Turell.

Thanks to Larry Rinkel for sharing his theater success and for his kind acknowledgement of NYCPlaywrights. Glad we can help!

I consult nycplaywrights.org daily for submission opportunities. My short farce "The Fable of January and May," a modern-verse adaptation of "The Merchant's Tale" from Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales," was originally written for a competition at UrbanStages where it was a semi-finalist. I then directed the play for Long Island City's Secret Theatre 1-Act Festival in May 2017, and later for Maplewood, NJ's ThinkFast Festival in February 2018, where it was nominated for best play. All three opps from nycplaywrights.org.

Breaking Through the Box seeks one-acts/full-length plays & musicals

web site

Breaking Through the Box, a Bordentown, New Jersey based Non-Profit Theater Company, is looking for plays written by up-and-coming playwrights (or new work by published playwrights) for our 2019-2020 season.

DEADLINE: 11:59pm on December 31, 2018.

The theme of the season is “The Power of Art”, and we are looking for one to two new plays/musicals to showcase. This theme could relate to art within the story of the play, or the specific art form the play is written in (Forensic Theater, Devised Theater, Theater of the Oppressed). This play will not only be produced but also have opportunities for workshopping and feedback on the script once cast and before rehearsals begin.

To Submit: You may either submit a one-act/full-length play/musical that you believe relates to this theme. The plays will be looked at by our Director of Development, Joe Piserchio, who will send the top prospects off to our Artistic Director. The playwright chosen will be contacted in late February/early March, and negotiations over the details of the process will be discussed then.

Please submit all work to  bttb.development@gmail.com

If you have any questions or comments before submitting, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Metropolitan Playhouse accepting submissions for new one-act plays

web site

Metropolitan Playhouse, New York's OBIE Award-winning explorer of America's Theatrical Heritage, is currently accepting submissions for new one-act plays inspired by the life and history of New York's Lower East Side.

Submissions will be evaluated by Metropolitan's artistic staff, and we will produce up to 10 of the submitted plays in June 2019, as part of our 8th Annual East Village Theater Festival.

Playwrights will receive an honorarium of $100 for their submissions.

Subject - Very Important:

Plays MUST pertain specifically, though not necessarily exclusively, to the East Village and Lower East Side of Manhattan.  Please DO NOT submit plays that do not conform to this simple guideline.  We are eager not to waste your--and our--time.  Plays that do not in some way illuminate life and/or conditions in that neighborhood--past, present or future--will not be considered.  The subject or theme may well pertain to other places as well, but they must be quite specifically applicable to the East Village/Lower East Side.

As a secondary consideration, and as in prior years, preference will be given to plays that pertain to a chosen theme. For Volume 14, the theme is Perseverance as it relates to life in the East Village of today and in eras past.  (See below for more information.)

Submission Deadline:
Completed scripts must be RECEIVED, by mail or e-mail, by 5:00 pm Sunday, December 30, 2018.

By Mail:
Metropolitan Playhouse
220 E 4th Street
New York, NY 10009

By e-mail
PLEASE SUBMIT as ".pdf" files to EVC14@metropolitanplayhouse.org

The Festival
East Village Chronicles, Vol. 14 is the 14th seasonal festival of new plays that celebrate and explore the varied history and eclectic culture that have defined Manhattan's Lower East Side (in all its permutations).  The selected plays may include a variety of styles and tones, unified by their being clearly related to life in the theater's neighborhood.

Metropolitan Playhouse will produce the plays on our 3/4 thrust stage in our 51 seat theater at 220 E 4th Street.

The plays will be directed by a director engaged by Metropolitan to coordinate and rehearse the entire festival.

The plays will be performed by a core company of actors, cast specifically for the festival, each of whom will most likely perform in more than one festival play.  The cast of any given play will be drawn from this core company, and therefore anyone cast must be suitable for more than one play.  Because we are forming a company, while playwrights' input is highly desired, final decisions remain with Metropolitan's artistic staff.

The Theme for 2019: Perseverance

The Chronicles plays have been connected each year in that they have focused on a certain topic, theme, or timeline.  Selecting plays that are inspired by some such organizing principle helps to give the festival shape and to enrich the experience for audience members.  (See * below for further discussion of the theme idea.)

This year, the Chronicles will be devoted to Perseverance.  We believe this theme is especially resonant within the context of our national conversation and the particular history and character of the neighborhood.  In our neighborhood, with its history of promise to newly immigrated Americans, its long defiance of the conventions of mainstream lifestyles, its tradition of political opposition, and its current rapid rise in real estate values, perseverance has always driven its residents' day to day attack on the world.

Playwrights are encouraged to respond directly, indirectly, and creatively to this idea; how a play relates to the notion of "Prosperity" is up to the playwright.

Technical Guidelines

We are seeking plays of between 10 minutes and 1.5 hours that can be played by 5 or fewer actors.
The plays may be presented with at least one other in a given evening, and as a consequence, should not require elaborate set or properties.

Performance Dates (subject to change):   June 6  - 23, 2019

From the production of PERSEPHONE: (left) Kendell Katz and (right) Lynda Rettick

I find your site invaluable. In fact, NYCPlaywights is often the only place I look for submission calls. One of many opps I learned about on NYCPlaywrights that resulted in a reading or production is Heartland Theatre Company's 10-Miinute Play Contest. This year I submitted my play “Persephone” and it was one of eight new plays selected for Heartland’s 2018 10-Minute Play Festival. I’m very grateful to NYCPlaywrights for the generous free listings and for all your support of playwrights. Thank you!

Thanks to Jennifer for sharing her theater story and for letting us know she has the following productions coming up for 2019:

—World premiere of EMILY’S ROOM @ Rover Dramawerks (Plano TX) 3/28-4/6
—Reading of ELLERY by The Bechdel Group @ The Tank (NYC) 4/1/19

Share Your Theater Story: Mark Rosati

Thank you Mark for sharing and for your kind words! Congratulations on your shows & readings!
NYC Playwrights is an indispensable resource for playwrights. Over the past five years, I'd say that half of my productions and staged readings resulted from NYC Playwrights, including two festivals in NYC during one month last year. So grateful to Nancy for her tireless work sharing these opportunities!
If you would like to share your theater story of any time you've gotten a production thanks to seeing an opportunity at NYCPlaywrights send us your story - and production pix if possible - to story@nycplaywrights.org

Corell Barker-Hall and Rafael Reyes in The Pain Inside at Santa Cruz Actors’ Theatre

Thanks Carlos Jerome for sharing your theater stories - and congratulations on your multi-media success!
nycplaywrights.org has helped me toward a number of productions and readings.  One I’d like to share with you was at Actors’ Theatre of Santa Cruz.
Having  learned through nycplaywrights.org about the Actors’ Theatre 8 Tens @ 8 Short Play Festival, I submitted my play, The Pain Inside, for their 2017 program.  They accepted it and ran the play (directed masterfully by Robin Aronson) as part of the show though January 2017.  You can see a video of their performance of the play -- with Rafael Reyes and Corell Barker-Hall – on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdyniTOccYJHMx9C6Qi5-Tw  .
Lawrence Harbison then included the play in his 2017 Best Ten-Minute Plays (Smith & Kraus).

Please continue with the great work at nycplaywrights.org.

Award-winning production of SHARK WEEK
performed by Shondavette Timm, Pauletta Sataua, and Pamela Wood
Directed by Maridian Broadus

Thanks to Tom Misuraca for sharing his theater stories. You can hear the interview with Tom and the performance of his SHARK WEEK on the NYCPlaywrights Podcast here:

And congratulations to Tom for having so many theater stories!

2018 has been my most successful year of playwriting to date. And if I don’t owe 90% of that to NYCPlaywrights Blog, I owe more! I won two Playwriting Awards for full-lengths and three Audience favorite awards for ten-minute plays. I had twenty-two short plays produced and seven stage read all over the world: Los Angeles, Houston, Detroit, Chicago, Brooklyn, New York City, Orlando, London and other parts of the UK. I even had a play published in a e-zine in Puerto Rico! Plus, I had a full length play and 11 short plays performed on radio/podcasts… one of those being Shark Week, which was performed on the NYCPlaywrights Podcast, and I had the honor of being interviewed by Nancy.
Shark Week went on to win Best Play of the Week Three of the North Park Playwrights festival. Thank you, Nancy, for all you do for us.

Call for Submissions for an evening of ten-minute plays at Buffalo State College

web site

Call for Submissions
Deadline: January 3, 2019

Call for Submissions for an evening of ten-minute plays at Buffalo State College. The program will run two nights during the Spring 2019 semester.

Submission Guidelines:

*The play must have characters in 18-25 range, no exceptions. If needed, you may include ONE (1) character not in that age range, but we are looking for plays that will resonate with the diverse young actors playing the roles, as well as the diverse college students in the audience; changing the ages on a generic play probably isn't going to work.

*Playwrights may submit one or two plays, but if you submit two, please do so in separate emails.

*All plays must be no longer than ten minutes, which may actually mean fewer than ten pages. If you’re not sure, please read it aloud.  No exceptions, no matter how brilliant the extra minutes may be. We mean it.

*All plays must have minimal set requirements. Plays chosen will receive full productions at Buffalo State’s black box theater, but with eight plays being performed, there is no time for elaborate set changes.

*Please email ten-minute plays with minimal set requirements to buffstateshortplays@gmail.com in standard format in Word or PDF.

*Email subject line should have your name and title of your play, e.g. MARY BROWN/MY AWESOME COLLEGE AGE PLAY.

*Body of email should contain contact information (including email and phone) and the play’s production history ONLY. You don’t have to write a cover letter, so please don’t. Anything other than the requested information is only going to give us a bad first impression (i.e. you don’t follow rules).

*Submissions that do not adhere to these guidelines will not be considered.

The Deadline:
Submissions must be received by January 3, 2019. We prefer earlier to later, as we read and cull as the submissions come in.

You will receive a confirmation email when we receive your play. Finalists will be notified by email by mid-March. We are sorry we cannot respond to each individual playwright.

The Producer:
Buffalo State will provide directors, actors, designers, and technical crew for the run of the show.  We will encourage directors to be in touch with playwrights throughout the process. For more information about the theater department at Buffalo State, please visit our Web site: theater.buffalostate.edu.

The Production:
Plays will be presented together as an evening of theater.  Chosen playwrights will receive a copy of the program, four complimentary tickets to be used any night of the run, and a $25 royalty.

If you have questions, please email buffstateshortplays@gmail.com with QUESTION in the subject line.

We look forward to reading your work!

McFarland & Company seeks English-language plays

web site

Seeking: “First-Person” plays of any length and genre for publication in an upcoming anthology exploring the intersection of Disability and the Performing Arts

Submission timeline: Friday, September 14, 2018 – Friday, December 28, 2018

Overview: This first-of-its-kind critical anthology, to be published by McFarland & Company and slated for a 2020 release, seeks English-language plays (or English-language translations) that explore the realities of being both a performing artist and a person who identifies as—or is seen by others as—disabled. The collection focuses on the labor, the perceptions, the economics, the expectations, and the creative expression inherent in working in the performing arts, and the ways in which disability—in its many forms and faces—interacts, interrupts, and/or transforms those aspects, whether in pragmatic concerns, battling the charitable and freakshow models, or simply attempting to create ones art within a disability context. In addition to encouraging diversity in content, style, structure, and point of view, we are looking for plays that share the following commonalities:

• Scripts told in the “first person” – i.e., they feature one or more characters that speak directly to the audience in a seemingly autobiographical fashion. This may be a one-person show (as in I Am My Own Wife, Black N Blue Boys, etc.) or a show with a larger cast (as in Wit, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, etc.). These “autobiographical” characters can either be fictionalized (as with Wit and Hedwig), true representations of the playwright’s lived experiences (as with Sherry Jo Ward’s Stiff or Neil Marcus’s Storm Reading), or somewhere in-between. The possibilities include everything from “TED talk”-style solo works to ensemble-devised post-dramatic explorations to meta-theatrical treatments of Richard III. Authors are encouraged to submit boldly!

• In addition to having experience in the performing arts, playwright(s) should be one of the following:
(1.) someone who self-identifies as Disabled (under any model of the word)
(2.) someone who belongs to a group/demographic that is often deemed disabled by society/the medical community, whether they accept that term or not (example: those who identify Deafness as cultural rather than medical, etc.)
(3.) In some cases, “Disability-adjacent” playwrights (i.e., playwrights who have an immediate family member/loved one who is disabled, who have served as a caretaker, aid, or assistant for someone with a disability, etc.) may be considered, however, their submission must be specifically from that point of view, and not attempt to “wear” disability themselves.

• “Disability,” for the purposes of this project, is an intentionally broad term. It includes “impairments” and “disorders” (whether physical, emotional, or cognitive, and whether the term is adopted by the person in question, their doctor, or society); alternative limbs; neurodiversity; disfigurement, life-threatening illness, etc., as well as chronic pain, prescription medication addiction, and other related situations that often carry medical and social stigma. Considerations of medical, social, labor, and/or any other models of disability are welcome into the submissions process.

• “Performing Arts” has also been intentionally left as a very broad term. Though the collection currently focuses on traditional stage theatre, authors with other ideas are encouraged to get in touch.
Other important information:

• Plays which explore intersectional aspects of disability and performance, including race, gender identity, economics, sexuality, religion, citizenship, age, etc., are especially encouraged.

• Playwrights whose plays are selected for inclusion will be asked to grant limited, non-exclusive rights to the editor and publisher, restricted to the singular purpose of this anthology. The playwright will retain all rights to the play, both for performance and other publishing opportunities.

• Plays of any length and any genre, previously performed or not, are welcome. Musicals/plays with original songs are welcome for consideration if accompanied with either sheet music or audio recordings.

Please submit scripts in PDF to TheAccessibleStage@gmail.com.

The author’s name should *not* appear on the script. Instead, please include a separate PDF with a cover letter, all contact information, a brief biography, and—if applicable—any reviews/materials from past productions of the submitted play.

Accessibility note for users of screen-readers: the email address for submissions is The Accessible Stage at g mail dot com.

Panglossian Productions seeking submissions for Weekend of Women

web site

Panglossian Productions is seeking submissions for our Weekend of Women on March 29-30, 2019.

We are looking for both full-length and 10-minute plays written by and featuring women.

Here is what you need to know:
- You may submit more than one play (as long as you feel that it is worthwhile, submit it)
- Cast size should range between 2-6 people
-You will be notified via email if your play is selected to be featured
- Submissions should be emailed in PDF format to wow@panglossian.org and contain the following information

1. Playwright name
2. Playwright contact information including email address
3. A brief statement about the playwright and the piece itself (be creative, but honest)

-If you have further questions, please email them to wow@panglossian.org

Why are we doing this?

According to our namesake, the dementedly optimistic Dr. Pangloss, “All is for the best in the best of all possible worlds.”

Most of the time, the world falls short.  As any young artist who decides to build a life in the performing arts discovers, it’s hard to get experience without already having it. It’s even harder to convince people to take a gamble on new works and innovative ideas, no matter how exciting they may be.

What’s safe is always… well… safe.  And that’s fine.  But safe things don’t ignite passion in us.  They don’t make us catch our breath or question how we live or want to go running into the streets to tell people what we’ve seen.  So, we choose projects that take risks and that are worth the risk.

We exist in order to boldly and thoughtfully create:

• Unpretentious productions that challenge our audience without patronizing them.
• Opportunities for talented and dedicated young artists to gain meaningful experience.
• Development of new, innovative, substantive, and semi-crazy artistic ventures.

Visit us online at panglossian.org or find Panglossian Productions on Facebook.

Athena Writes Fellowship

web site

Athena Theatre seeks submissions for their annual Playwriting Fellowship, Athena Writes. In addition to producing NYC premieres in venues including 59E59 Theaters and Theatre Row, Athena Theatre actively supports emerging playwrights with this fellowship. Athena Writes is an emerging playwrights’ group assembled for a one-year exploration of an open-ended theme.

Next year, we will be exploring “A Deafening Silence”. Athena Theatre is committed to supporting new work that pushes at the boundaries of live theatre. We especially encourage playwrights with an eye for diverse characters, strong points of view, and action-focused dialogue to apply.

As a part of Athena Writes, playwrights will meet twice a month on Wednesdays (or a day that works best for the group), beginning in mid-January 2019, for three hour sessions, to discuss the year’s theme, share new work and talk playwriting and the business of theatre. During the course of the year, each playwright will complete a short 10-minute play that will be produced at Athena’s yearly New Play Festival, currently scheduled for May 2019, at a NYC theatre. Before the end of the fellowship year, each playwright will also complete a full-length piece reflecting the year’s theme. The playwright group will be facilitated by an Athena Theatre Company resident dramaturge.

By applying to this fellowship, you acknowledge that you are able to make this time commitment to attend these sessions twice a month for the duration of 2019. Your attendance is instrumental for the development of your own work as well as support for your fellow playwrights. Other than cases of illness, an emergency or theatre related conflict, each playwright is permitted four absences per year, which must be approved by the Artistic Director in advance.

All playwrights will offer a ten-minute play for the play festival. Athena Theatre will provide the theater space and PR outreach; playwrights will be responsible for any specialty costumes, props or scenic items. The compilation of all ten-minute plays created in residence will be submitted for publication consideration.

At the end of the year, 10-minute excerpts from each full-length play will be presented as a staged reading at a NYC venue TBA.

The playwrights’ full-length plays will also be considered for full production by Athena Theatre in its next season. In addition, the next year’s playwright-in-residence will be chosen from this group of playwrights.

Those selected for the playwriting fellowship (limited to eight participating playwrights) will be asked for an admission fee of $300 to join Athena Writes 2019. This contribution goes directly to theatre rental, actor and crew stipends for the Evening of Ten-Minute Plays and the Year-End Staged Reading.

To be considered for Athena Writes 2019 Playwright Fellowship please submit the following by December 21st, 2018, to Founding Artistic Director, Veronique Ory, at: Veronique@AthenaTheatre.com:

Green Stories seeks Stage Plays around building a sustainable society

web site

This competition is free to enter.
There will be prizes and routes to production.
Green Stories is in the UK

General Competition Information

We are looking for Stage Plays that in some way touch upon ideas around building a sustainable society. If you’d prefer to create your story in a different format, click here. We will consider all genres – rom-com, literary fiction, science fiction, mystery, crime etc. – but stories must engage with the idea of environmentally sustainable practices and/or sustainable societies.

Most stories set in the future are dystopian, meaning they have a pessimistic view of society. We will consider all stories, but we encourage you to imagine a more positive settings and practices for your stories. You can find out more about why we recommend positive stories by clicking here. Do feel free to draw upon the resources in this Green Stories website to write your story (found in the menu on the homepage. Each page provides links to articles/videos that describe the ideas and also ideas for how such ideas may be integrated into stories.

The story doesn’t have to be about sustainability or climate change directly. A rom-com, for example, could be set in a society that replaces ownership with borrowing and the heroine goes to a clothes library to pick up a posh dress and borrow jewellery for her big date; or the hero in a crime drama could use a carbon credit card and hear the news in the background reporting on the wellbeing index instead of GDP; or the characters in a legal drama could live in a city where everyone has gardens on their roofs and generates energy from their own waste.

Our short story competition (deadline April 2018) has resulted in an anthology of the 20 best stories called ‘Resurrection Trust’  which will be published 20th March 2019 and available on Amazon. This may well provide some inspiration.

We are now open for submissions for our 13th Women's Work Festival that will be taking place March 4-8 2019 in St. John's Newfoundland Canada.

If you would like to submit your play please email it to womensworkfestivalnl@gmail.com.

We are an international festival of plays-in-progress featuring play readings, music performances, workshops, and panels, promoting work by women (self-identified). Despite some bumps in 2017, we're still here and we're delighted that our festival is happening in 2018!

Our festival has a history of success  in helping to launch playwrights from the page to the stage. In our first 10 years, there were 21 professional productions of 17 WWF plays from new, emerging, and established playwrights. As we approach this year's festival, we'll feature some of the writers and hear about their experiences here and where it led them.

WWF gratefully acknowledges support from Canadian Heritage’s BCAH Fund for their continuing, generous support of our festival in 2018. We are delighted to have the long-term support of RCA Theatre, and support from the City of St. John’s.
