Carlo Annoni International Playwriting Prize 2023

The Carlo Annoni International Playwriting Prize is now open for submission of short and full-length plays with topics concerning the LBGTQ+ community, including love, diversity and identity in a time of gender fluidity.

We are willing to accept both full-length plays and short plays. We accept plays already represented.

€1000 awarded to two best plays (one in English and one in Italian) and special jury mentions on mutliple categories.

3rd Annual Arts Incubator Short Play Fest

For the 3rd consecutive year, we are thrilled to accept script submissions for the Arts Incubator Short Play Fest, which will exist (for the first time ever!) in a hybrid format of online events and in-person readings in and around Irvington, NY, all taking place in March 2023.

Celebrating short, new, and in-development works of theater, the festival was launched by Irvington Theater in 2021. (Explore 2021 and 2022 festivals here.) It is an opportunity for playwrights to share their work with a wider audience and engage with that audience directly — and depending on the medium of their piece, an opportunity to experiment with the virtual format or the chance to experience the latest draft of their play out loud with a small, live audience. 

Submission Guidelines:

Plays should be unpublished, unproduced, and no more than 20 pages in length. Playwrights should only submit one script.

All playwrights are responsible for assembling their casts and creative teams; this is an unpaid, non-union opportunity.

Playwrights should articulate whether they want to be considered for the virtual portion of the festival, the in-person readings in Irvington, New York, or both. (To be considered for the in-person readings, you and your cast/team must be local, or able to travel, to Dobbs Ferry, NY for a to-be-scheduled reading in March 2023.)

Festival participants will be notified by February 2, 2023. If selected for the virtual portion of the festival, playwrights (and their teams) will be asked to deliver a recorded video of their play by February 28, 2022; your video will stream for free on YouTube with other festival selections for a one-week, limited release from March 18-26, 2023. If selected for the in-person portion of the festival, you and your cast will be scheduled for a one-night-only reading of your play on March 25, 2023, alongside other festival selections, at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY (a 45-minute commute from NYC via Metro-North Railroad); you and your team are responsible for any preparation and rehearsals you deem necessary ahead of the in-person reading. All festival selections will be promoted across Irvington Theater social media and widely circulated emails, our website, and in-person signage throughout the Rivertowns, NY.

Tell us if you want to be considered for the virtual portion of the festival, the in-person readings in Dobbs Ferry, NY (see submission guidelines), or both. Please also tell us how you see this festival benefiting your play in its current phase. (250 words or less).

If submitting for the virtual portion of the festival, tell us your vision for deliberately embracing the video format. We encourage you to be as creative as possible!

Utah Shakespeare Festival: Words Cubed

Thank you for your interest in submitting plays to Words Cubed. Our submission process for 2023 begins September 30, 2022 and continues until December 31, 2022. Please note this deadline is a month earlier than previous years.

To have your script considered for Words Cubed, please submit an email to words3@bard.org with the following as attachments:

The whole play, but designate 15-20 contiguous pages to be read as an excerpt. You can designate these pages in the email with your submission.

A one page synopsis of your play, that is, a short description of what happens in your play (not background information on the play, what its theme is, or a “teaser”).

A one page character description (include any suggested doubling).

Please put your last name and name of your play in the subject line (for example “Shakespeare - Titus Andronicus”).

Please do not submit adaptations of works for which you have not already secured the rights.

For Words Cubed, we are not looking for the ‘best’ play submitted, rather a good one that will benefit from, and fit into, our process. Also, how the plays complement one another – we select two for Words Cubed – and complement the season in which they are workshopped is part of our selection process. Additionally, a play that is very similar in theme or plot to recent Words Cubed selections are less likely to be chosen.

Please, only one submission per playwright.

We love musicals; however, our Words Cubed program is not designed to support a sufficient development process for musicals.

Call for Pirandellian Dramaturgies, 2nd edition – Short Stories to Drama

PSA, the Journal of the Pirandello Society of America (https://www.pirandellosociety.org/psa-journal), seeks submissions of short dramatic pieces (5 to 30 minutes of expected performance time) inspired by Luigi Pirandello’s short stories, for publication in the next or future issues. Scripts should be previously unpublished and unproduced for the stage except for staged readings.

An essential requirement is that proposed dramaturgies draw inspiration from Pirandello’s short stories, for example those recently translated and available at https://www.pirandellointranslation.org/, a project led by Pirandello scholars Lisa Sarti and Michael Subialka that aims at the translation of all of Pirandello’s short stories into contemporary English.


Dramaturgies could take several shapes such as:

1. adaptations for the stage of a single short story
2. adaptations that combine two or three stories
3. dramatic development of a section of a short story
4. monologues/dialogues of characters who appear in the short stories
5. dramatic situations that entail the reading/recitation of passages from the stories

Dramaturgies should avoid adapting the following stories, already utilized for theatre in some form by Pirandellohimself, specifically “The Doctor’s Duty,” “The License,” “The Jar,” “The Imbecile,” “Sicilian Limes,” “Think It Over, Giacomino!,” “A Character’s Tragedy,” “Death Is Upon Him,” “The Changeling,” “It’s Nothing Serious,” “Farewell, Leonora!,” “The Lord of the Ship,” “Mrs. Frola and Mr. Ponza, her Son-in law,” “The Friend to the Wives,” “Interviews with Characters,” and “Characters.”

Instead, inspiration should derive from any of the several other stories – already translated on the websitehttps://www.pirandellointranslation.org or read in a different translation – that did not find a dramatic form yet.

Grosse Point Theatre seeks 10 minute plays

According to creator and Michigan playwright Mary Lou Britton, you don’t have to be an accomplished playwright to enter, you just need a desire to tell the story in play form, developing a plot, characters and setting that can engage the audience. 

 SEVEN. FIVE. is the theme for our 2023 Ten-Minute Play Festival in our 75th Anniversary year. 

Writers need to fit the theme into their play, but it does not necessarily need to relate to our anniversary this year. Somehow, the numbers seven (7) and five (5) must be an integral part of the play, not just a random fact in the background.

The deadline for submission of plays for the 2023 Festival is midnight, December 31, 2022. Plays in proper format and length can be submitted electronically to playfestival@gpt.org. There is no charge to enter. Anyone over 18 years of age can enter, GPT member or not, from anywhere in Michigan or across the country. All plays will be evaluated anonymously by out-state judges, with plays to be included in the 2023 Festival announced around March 20, 2023.

The Festival will be held the weekend of June 9 and 10 with exact dates and times to be announced soon. It will be at Christ Church Grosse Pointe in the Undercroft.

Kumu Kahua Theatre is a non-profit theatre company that has presented original productions of special relevance to the people of Hawai‘i since 1971.

Each year Kumu Kahua Theatre co-sponsors a playwriting contest with the UHM Theatre Department in its effort to bring new and exciting drama to the stage. Although Kumu Kahua Theatre has a strong commitment to producing the works of local playwrights in recent years they have produced several plays pertaining to Hawai‘i that have been written by non-Hawai‘i residents. Kumu Kahua Theatre recognizes that many playwrights who have moved to the mainland, for example, may have valuable insights to offer about their local experiences.

The playwriting contest is offered in three separate categories. One prize will be offered in each category. All plays must be original and not involve adaptation form any copyrighted source. They should not have received previous production in their current form. Any number of scripts may be submitted by an individual, but a different pen name must accompany each play. Plays previously submitted to the contest are not eligible. Members of the board of Kumu Kahua Theatre will read all entries in the competition and consider each for workshops, which may lead to a production. Kumu Kahua Theatre is especially interested in plays pertinent to Hawai‘i.

For the Hawai‘i Prize ($600), which is open to residents and non-residents of Hawai‘i, the play must be set in Hawai‘i or deal with some aspect of the Hawai‘i experience. Some examples of appropriate topics might be: pre-colonial life in the islands; relation between indigenous and colonizer; the coming of whalers; missionaries and merchants; the history of ethnic immigration and adaptation to Hawai‘i; the development of enter-ethnic relationships; labor history; the territorial era; militarization; the move toward statehood; tourism and development; contemporary immigration and diaspora; women’s rights; the experiences of Hawai‘i’s people outside of Hawai‘i. Restricted to full-length plays (minimum 50 pages of standard form).

For the Pacific/Rim Prize ($450), which is open to residents and non-residents of Hawai‘i, the play must be set in or deal with the Pacific Islands, the Pacific Rim, or the Pacific/Asian American experience. Restricted to full-length plays (minimum 50 pages of standard form).

For the Resident Prize ($250), which is open to the residents of Hawai‘i at the time of submission, the plays may be on any topic, and of any length.

To submit a play:

1) You may email your script to kumukahuatheatre@gmail.com or mail three copies. Plays should be formatted/typed on ordinary bond paper, double-spaced, and on one side of the paper only.

2) Prepare a front page for the manuscript which bears the play title, pen name, and the division in which the play is being entered. Do not place your name anywhere on the script.

3) In an ordinary envelope place a piece of paper with the following information clearly printed or typed (if you are emailing your script, this should be in the body of your email):

a) play title and pen name

b) playwright's real name

c) social security number

d) address and phone number

e) competition division

4) If you are sending via US Mail, seal the envelope and print or type the play title on the outside.

5) Place the playscript and the sealed envelope in a large envelope (or otherwise wrap them together) and mail to:

Submitted playscripts become part of Kumu Kahua Theatre/UHM Theatre Department Competition Plays, a collection of manuscripts housed and bound in the Hawaiian and Pacific collection of Hamilton Library at the University of Hawai‘i. Kumu Kahua Theatre reserves first production rights for two years to all contest winners. All other rights are retained by the playwright. Three judges, whose decisions will be final, will be selected by Kumu Kahua Theatre to evaluate the plays. If, in the opinion of the judges, the plays submitted do not show sufficient merit, one or more prizes may be withheld. Results of the contest will be announced to the press.

Jellybucket seeks 10-minute plays from Non-Binary/Transgender Writers

Issue #13 (summer 2023) will contain a special section dedicated to non-binary/trans writers. Jelly Bucket is looking for 10-minute plays excluding musicals or plays for children. Please send your document using the standard dramatists’ guild format, 10 pages maximum. The first page must contain the name of the play and the name of the playwright. The second page should contain a list of characters and descriptions (gender/s and characteristics), time, and setting. Please use Courier New or Times New Roman 12pt. font with 1" margins all the way around.

Plays that have been produced are eligible for publication so long as they have not appeared previously in print anywhere.

WHAT TO SUBMIT

Lifeline Theatre 2nd annual developmental workshop

Lifeline Theatre announces our 2nd annual developmental workshop! We continue to be invested in bringing new and diverse voices to our stage. As a new works company specializing in literary adaptation, we believe writers who adapt literature to the stage need dramatists to bounce ideas off of, actors to read it out loud, and experienced theatre makers to engage in discussion with the work. Also, writers need TIME to digest and incorporate the results of those experiences into their play. Lifeline Theatre has been developing new adaptations through an ensemble feedback process for decades. Therefore, we are excited to use our organizational knowledge about new adaptation development once again to support writers of color who are adapting literary works for the stage which may have the potential to be considered for production by Lifeline in the future.

Development:

This development process will be in service of the playwright and the play. Writers will choose the frequency, level, and style of feedback they want and the facilitator will coach, guide, and facilitate it in action. Support will ideally include a development team consisting of: a director, a dramaturg, Lifeline ensemble members, playwright-invited artists, a workshop coordinator, and Lifeline’s Artistic Director as facilitator. The process will culminate in a final reading for an invited audience that will be scheduled for July 2023, exact dates subject to artists’ schedules.

Submissions:

Lifeline seeks submissions from writers of color outlining their intent to develop a stage adaptation of a book or other literary work (e.g., short story, article, memoir, tale, poem, etc.). Proposals can be for traditional adaptations or “inspired by” approaches where the literature serves as a jumping off point, but the source material should be in the public domain. Only one proposal per writer will be accepted.

If chosen, writers will be expected to:
  • Either reside in the Chicago area, or be willing to cover their own expenses to travel to Chicago for the final reading;
  • Be available for up to six feedback sessions between February and July, 2023;
  • Devote time to write between sessions;
  • Invite like-minded artist friends/colleagues to feedback sessions to provide additional points of view;
  • Be available to attend the final reading, and its rehearsals to provide rewrites.
If chosen, writers will receive:
  • A $500 stipend;
  • A process-oriented, writer-focused, developmental experience;
  • A director and a dramaturg;
  • Regular readings of new or rewritten material with feedback from experienced Lifeline ensemble members and playwright-invited artists;
  • Administrative and casting support;
  • A final reading for an invited audience.

The New Voices Theatre Festival of The University of Alabama Theatre and Dance department is seeking stories from diverse and underrepresented communities.

The New Voices Theatre Festival is accepting submissions of unpublished and unproduced full-length plays to develop during a summer residency that will culminate in a staged reading. One new work from the festival will be chosen to be mounted as a fully-produced production during the upcoming show season at The University of Alabama.

During the summer residency, plays may be collaboratively developed in the rehearsal space.

*The playwright must own all rights to their script.

How to Submit a Script

Scripts must be submitted as a PDF on the Submissions form by January 1st, 2023.

All scripts must be received by the submission deadline. Submissions entered after the deadline will not be considered. Please submit scripts as PDF documents only. 

Please submit scripts with no identifying information about the playwright. With the script, include a brief plot synopsis, cast size, and character list with description.

At this time, all play submissions must be for full-length plays. Submissions may not exceed 90 minutes. Cast size is preferred to be between six to twelve characters.

What She Said Festival Call for Submissions

What She Said Festival is a celebration of new, short plays by woman-identifying playwrights. The Underground in Duluth, MN created the festival as an opportunity for women playwrights, directors and actors to have a focused space to express themselves and feature their stories through theater.

SEEKING: Submissions for the 2023 What She Said Festival.

This will be an evening of 5-8 short plays and monologues written by women playwrights celebrating women and what they have to say.

Submit your work(s) any time between now and December 31, 2022.

Though there are no conditions set on structure, content, or genre, we’re seeking works as part of a celebration of women and their voices. Additionally, as this is a festival with multiple plays, the technical elements will be kept simple and will be a consideration as we are selecting plays.

The Artistic Home Call for Submissions - Cut to the Chase play festival

Submissions are now open for the 20th Cut to the Chase one-act play festival, presented by The Artistic Home Studio. A staple of Chicago’s theater community for 20 years, Cut to the Chase presents six new plays, showcasing moment-to-moment acting in an intimate theater space.

This year’s Cut to the Chase will celebrate the theme: the importance of connection. Performances will take place Jan. 26 – Jan. 29, 2023 at The Den Theatre in Chicago.

Play submission should meet the following requirements:

– One-act plays of no more than 12 minutes

– Previously unproduced in Chicago

– Writers are encouraged to submit plays that generally fit this year’s theme: the importance of connection

– Plays will be chosen in part on their ability to provide a range of voices and an opportunity for showcasing a diverse cast.

Ghostlight Ensemble seeks scripts for young audiences

Ghostlight Ensemble is seeking short scripts (a maximum of 15 minutes) that are geared toward young audiences. 

Priority will be placed on scripts that are ethnically and culturally diverse, and written by writers of color and/or LGBTQ writers. 

This is open to playwrights in any geographic area, though writers in the greater Chicago area will receive priority. NO FEE.

Playwrights will receive $25 per selected script.

Selected plays will be produced in the late spring of 2022 as part of the fourth annual Make/Believe festival of theatre for children under our Nightlight banner. (Learn more about the 2020 festival, the 2021 festival and the 2022 festival with these links.) 

The performances will be held live, with a location or locations TBD.

Please pay close attention to the script requirements. Scripts that do not meet the following criteria will not be considered.

Requirements

A maximum of 3 actors per script. There are no restrictions, however, on the number of characters. Please note, that while some directors have chosen to use child actors in past pieces, the intent of this festival is to perform for children, not with children.

Plays must have minimal to no technical demands, as there is a possibility these plays will be performed outside and/or in multiple locations. There may be no lighting or backstage area, although minimal sound cues will be available.

Must fit our mission.

Geared toward children 11 and under. Please, NO scripts about high school students.

All props, set pieces and costumes must be easily made at home by actors (and children watching who want to stage their own productions at home).

Pieces can be previously produced, but cannot have a production running concurrently with Make/Believe.

Now in its 35th year, NAMT’s Festival of New Musicals is the cornerstone of NAMT’s mission to be a catalyst for nurturing musical theatre development and production. Every year, we feature eight musicals in short presentations for an audience of over 700 industry professionals. We look for new musicals at all stages of development from the broadest possible range of voices.

In the short run, the Festival’s goal is to connect producers with writers, so that our shows can extend their development trajectory. The long-term goal is to expand the musical theatre repertoire and advance the musical theatre art form.

Our 35th Annual Festival of New Musicals will take place on October 26 and 27, 2023.

The objectives of the Festival are to:
Showcase quality new musicals with a wide range of subject matter, style and concept
Nurture composers, lyricists and book writers of all identities and backgrounds
Stimulate networking opportunities for NAMT Members and theatre professionals
Provide a forum to spark new collaborations and ventures
Encourage future productions of new musicals

We never take any royalties from our writers or ask them to pay for their participation in the Festival. The Festival is funded solely through sponsorships, grants and donations contributed by government agencies, foundations, organizations and individuals.
Step 1: Is Your Show Eligible?

Any new musical can be submitted for consideration as long as it meets the criteria below.



The musical must…
  • Be complete and ready for readings, workshops and/or productions.
  • Have a demo that is an accurate representation of the music and style of the show.
  • Have full underlying rights clearances for any pre-existing material used (music, source material, etc.) in the script.
  • Be ready for readings, workshops and/or productions at the time of submission and available for performance in October 2022 at the Festival.
  • The musical cannot…Already be licensed through a professional licensing house.
  • Have been produced on Broadway. [Shows that have had readings, workshops and/or productions (including regional or Off-Broadway) are still eligible.]
  • Have already been submitted to the Festival three times. Each show can only be submitted three times for review by the committee.
  • Have been presented as one of our main presentations at a Festival (excludes shows presented as part of our complementary programming including concerts and showcases).
In addition, the writers must be available for the Festival and all rehearsals.

Burlington County Footlighters Curtain Rising: Staged Readings of New Works

The 2nd Stage at Burlington County Footlighters Theatre in Cinnaminson NJ is producing Curtain Rising: Staged Readings of New Works as part of our 2023 season. This thought-provoking event will showcase one-act plays which explore the framework of Self-Identity vs. Conformity.

Thank you for your interest in this work! Here's a reminder of the basics. We are currently accepting script submissions and will select a small number of one-act plays for directed, script-in-hand staged readings to be performed on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at the 2nd Stage in Burlington County Footlighters Theatre.

We seek plays which: Fit within the over-arching theme of Self-Identity vs. Conformity, have no more than five characters, can be read in 15-30 minutes, and have minimal staging requirements

Direction – We ask that Playwrights to either direct the plays or to find Directors. 2nd Stage may want to provide a Director, and will reach out to the Playwright in that case.

Casting – Is the responsibility of the Playwright/Director. 2nd Stage is happy to provide recommendations of and connection with known actors if requested.

Rehearsals - Each play will have a blocking/tech rehearsal in the 2nd Stage space, on either March 6 or 9, 2023. The Director and full cast are required to participate. We encourage Directors to have at least one [virtual] rehearsal in advance of the onsite rehearsal.

The playwright must be in attendance on March 11, 2023 at the staged reading to hear his/her/their work and be present for audience feedback

Who chooses the musicals?

A group of diverse industry 12 professional adjudicators that includes producers, literary managers, directors, professional performers, and writers from previous SOUND BITES guided by our Theatre Now staff members. We guide the committee to consider artistic quality, uniqueness and diversity of the pieces so the evening represents a wide range of styles and types of musicals. BIPOC writers, LGBTQ+ writers, and writers with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Do I need to live in the NYC area to participate?

No, however if chosen, as writer, you would need someone to represent you and attend all required meetings if you do not live in the area.

How much does it cost?

As Theatre Now is an artist service organization, and as the Producer of SOUND BITES, we cover the majority of your expenses and costs. We're the only short musical theatre festival that offer artists honorariums and rehearsal reimbursements for each piece. That said, there are some out-of-pocket costs depending on your show's requirements (cast & creative team size, number of rehearsals, size of rehearsal space, etc.) and personal choice. Most of these costs relate to specific set-dressing, props and costumes for your show and additional personnel such as musicians.

Submissions require a letter of recommendation. What should that include?

Your letter should be written by a theatre professional who can talk about the piece itself or you as a theatre artist.



Theatre Now defines a 10-minute musical as any piece that can be performed in max. 10min, has a beginning, middle, end story arch, and includes music. Having produced over 70 pieces, we want musicals that are diverse, current, test the musical form and communicate a well-crafted story. We accept musicals across all styles and genres, as well as consider foreign language and/or bilingual scripts. We strongly encourage submissions from female writers, BIPOC and LGBTQ+ writers.​​

Please review the following criteria thoroughly before sending your submission:

Musical theatre writers can only submit up to two scripts.

The story must have a beginning, middle, and end.

We also accept submissions in foreign languages or that are bilingual. Although the application process is still in English, the work itself may be submitted and performed in any other language if selected.

Each piece must include music.
  • All submission must be submitted via this website. No physical copies.
  • Each musical must be ten minutes long maximum. Cuts will be made if accepted. 
  • Longer one-acts or full-length musicals will not be considered.
  • A musical may be a previously produced work with a production history.
  • Though we have no formal script formatting guidelines, all scripts must be easy to read.
  • The volume of submissions prevents us from providing feedback on all submissions.
  • If your piece is visual (ie. Choreography heavy), please include video footage or detailed descriptions. 
We expect to contact all writers by the end of January, 2023 on the status of their submission with one of the following emails:

An acceptance email into the festival that will include additional information to confirm their involvement.

A waitlist email. In the event an accepted musical declines their participation, a selected wait listed musical will be notified to serve as a replacement.

The remaining musicals will receive a "not selected" email and are encouraged to submit again next year.

Our lights can create a flush in a full range of deep colors, allowing you many different creative options to light your show.  You are also free to use our projector that projects 21×12′ on our backdrop.  Our lighting and sound boards are extremely easy to use, even for those with little to no previous experience. For a One-Act (30-45 minutes) we provide 2 hours, and for a Short (5-20 minutes) we provide you 1 hour.

Other places might offer little to no time for tech rehearsals, but we understand that you can’t get anything done in that time. We don’t want to risk your show looking worse than it could be just because you never got to run the show with lights. Our goal is to make sure you feel confident with your show before you open. That’s why we offer a generous amount of tech time (After all, time is money!)

§  What’s more important than advertising your show?


Many theater festival’s websites do not advertise your show. Those that do only do so with vague descriptions and a thumbnail of a poster. Check out our web pages where we list previous productions and you will immediately see the difference - Large posters and detailed information!

We create a page for your show, with a link that you can share with confidence to family, friends, colleagues, and community. 

Furthermore, cast and crew from all other productions in a season are granted free tickets to see all of the other shows in the festival!

§  Prime performance hours

We give you ideal prime time slots with a variety of times, allowing all audience members to find a performance they can attend; we also include 30 minutes of time to set up before each show.

§  No seasonal volunteers

One of our principle team members is always at the theater to support you during your tech, box office times, and performances.  You will always see a familiar face!  Feel free to ask for help or special guidance to make your performance a success.  Your questions will be answered in a matter of hours from the festival’s team.  You will never have to wait days for a response.  Our staff is knowledgeable and experienced, providing you with real answers and a personal touch.

§  Award ceremony

At the end of the festival, we host an unforgettable awards ceremony to honor your talent in front of your artistic colleagues - similar to the Oscars!

Sundog Theatre seeks plays set on the Staten Island Ferry 2023

New and original, one-act plays about our favorite boats, the Staten Island Ferries.

Original plays not previously produced or published, with a signed note affirming that.

10-25 minutes in length and set on the Staten Island Ferry (Note: not performed on the Ferry).

Set in a contemporary time period. Strong priority will be given to plays with 2 characters, however, 3-character plays will be considered. No special set pieces other than benches or railings found on the Ferry, limited and easily accessible props/costumes, and no special sound or lighting.

Avoid overt and unnecessary sexual/violence situations and language since we cater to a broad audience.

No musicals, long monologues, poetry, rants, or verse.


IMPORTANT NOTE

We have weathered a lot the last few years, so this year's theme is Comedy. There can be serious moments peppered throughout, but we want to laugh. It can be dry, dark, or light comedy, satire -- whatever works in your play.

5 – 6 plays will be chosen by a reading team. Each writer will receive $200 and be produced in five March 2023 performances in Staten Island, NYC.

Please send two hard copies, bound or stapled, blind submission (removable cover page with title, author and all contact information) and the name of the play on each page to Sundog Theatre, “Scenes 2023”, PO Box 183, Staten Island, NY 10301.

Submissions should include brief synopsis, play history, a 70-word bio and also full resume of the writer.

Should be postmarked from now until December 16, 2022.

Do not submit plays electronically. Reasons: hard copies are easier to pass around/make notes on; protects your work; can’t get lost in email chains; and....easier on reading eyes.

Neurodivergent New Play Series 2023 seeks full-length plays

We are now accepting recurring submissions for the Neurodivergent New Play Series - a new play reading series produced by Piccione Arts opening in Brooklyn, NY in September 2023.

Submission slots are now open for Fall 2023, Spring 2024 & Fall 2024 for playwrights who identify as being neurodivergent. (i.e. autism, ADHD, OCD, Tourette's, etc.)

All submissions should be for full-length plays between 45 to 180 minutes long and may have received a previous reading or production outside of NYC, as long as they are unpublished. 

All neurodivergent writers at all stages of their careers are encouraged to play - especially BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and female-identifying writers. There is no submission fee or any other fee for being involved in this process.

Plays can be of any genre, although we are especially seeking works that challenge traditional methods of storytelling & have something important to say about the world that isn't being heard enough. We ask that you submit only one play every 30 days during our recurring submissions process.

The Caribbean Writer seeks work for its 2022 theme: Carrying: Reflection, Recognition and Repair

The Caribbean Writer (TCW) has issued a call for submissions for Volume 37 under the 2022 theme: Carrying: Reflection, Recognition and Repair. Through the lens of life defining experiences we gain critical insights. We are their agents, so we dutifully, gratefully or unwillingly carry them. 

Submissions exploring this theme in its widest permutations are invited.

Contributors may submit works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, essays or one act plays which explore the ideas resonating within the region and its diaspora. 

The Caribbean should be central to the work, or the work should reflect a Caribbean heritage, experience or perspective. 

Prospective authors should submit all creative works: drama, fiction and poetry manuscripts, through the online portal ONLY at www.thecaribbeanwriter.org/online-submission. Submit Word files only (no PDFs) . Note that TCW no longer accepts hardcopy submissions.


SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Individuals may submit poems (3 maximum), short stories (2 maximum) and personal essays (2 maximum) on general topics as well as on the theme. 

The maximum length (for short stories and personal essays) is 3500 words. Only previously unpublished work will be considered. The term “previously published” covers print and electronic publication —including on social media platforms, and self-published items. 

The Caribbean Writer does not accept simultaneous submissions (items being considered for publication elsewhere). The prospective author should provide contact information including mailing address, phone number, any professional affiliations, brief biographical information (no more than 100 words and such as appears under the “Contributors” section of the journal). In the event that the author’s contact information changes, all updates should be made by the author by logging into the online account.

Before submitting, submitter should carefully edit and proofread the manuscript, adhering to publication-ready details, as well as standards of proofreading such as spelling, grammar, punctuation, formatting and consistent language, along with the elimination of typographical errors, and with focus on the overall quality of the work.

The Caribbean Writer is a refereed journal. There are no fees payable to submit or publish in this journal. All submissions undergo an initial blind review by the editor. Creative works, such as fiction, poetry and drama, after editorial review, are advanced by the editor to the double-blind peer review process. In this process, both the reviewers’ and authors’ identities are concealed from the reviewers and vice versa throughout the review process.

Artists interested in having their artwork considered for use by TCW should submit electronic files in vertical format as PNG or JPEG files with a resolution of 300 dpi or greater. The journal also accepts black and white art (line drawings, sketches, block prints, etc.). The journal does not accept graphic poetry or narratives.

SUBMISSION WINDOW

Submissions are accepted from January 10 to December 31 each year and are considered for the journal that will be published the following year. (In other words, volume 37 will be published in 2023 and entries submitted between January 10 and December 31 of 2022 will be considered for volume 37. The deadline for submissions each year is December 31. 


Literary Prizes

All submissions are eligible for the following prizes:
  • The Canute A. Brodhurst Prize of $400 awarded to a writer for best short fiction. Donated by the St. Croix Avis Newspaper
  • The Daily News Prize of $500 awarded to a resident of the US Virgin Islands or the British Virgin Islands.
  • The Marvin E. Williams Literary Prize of $500 awarded to a new or emerging writer. Donated by Marvin’s widow, Dasil Williams, in honor of her late husband who served as the editor of The Caribbean Writer from 2003 – 2008.
  • The Cecile deJongh Literary Prize of $500 awarded to a Caribbean author whose work best expresses the spirit of the Caribbean. Donated by former Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. in honor of Cecile de Jongh’s abiding commitment to literacy in the territory, especially among the young people of the Virgin Islands..
  • The Vincent Cooper Literary Prize of $300 awarded to a Caribbean author for exemplary writing in Caribbean Nation Language (Kamau Brathwaite). Donated by Professor Vincent Cooper, PhD.
