Capital Repertory, Albany, NY Announces Next Act! New Play Summit 5
Next Act! celebrating its five year anniversary, is an expansion of Capital Repertory Theatre’s continued commitment to the development of new work. At the same time, the weekend long summit is designed to complement the Upper Hudson Valley’s rich diverse populations. The summits directly reflect the theatre’s mission, “to create meaningful theatre generated from an authentic link to the community.” Next Act! New Play Summit 5 takes place October 21 - 24, 2016 and will feature readings of four never-before produced plays, with additional special events throughout the weekend.
As in years past, the theatre is devoted to finding a play that can be produced in an upcoming season. Evidence of this devotion can be found in theREP’s productions of Suzanne Bradbeer’s The God Game (2015) and Naked Influence (2016), Sherry Kramer’s How Water Behaves (2015), and the 2017 production of Assisted Loving by Bob Morris, all of which started at Next Act.
Accepting full length plays only.
Multi-cultural and ethnically diverse pieces encouraged.
Comedy and Drama welcome!
ELIGIBILITY
Eligible plays can not have been previously produced, though previous readings are allowed. No more than 7 characters. (Please do not submit works in which actors play multiple roles, unless it is a device used to illuminate generations.)
Plays previously submitted to Next Act will not be considered for this years’ Summit.
Agent and non-agent submissions accepted.

HOW TO SUBMIT
Plays: Playwrights should submit, as a single Microsoft word or single PDF file attachment, a short one-paragraph synopsis – that illuminates the plays entire plot including its ending; character descriptions and the first 10 pages (and only the first ten pages) of their play. Submission documents should be void of playwright’s name and contact information.
Submissions that do not conform to the guidelines stipulated will not be accepted.

A small stipend and limited travel available for playwrights selected.

From true stories to tabloid trash, unexpected heroes to alien abductions, we need you to find the most amazing, crazy, outlandish true-ish stories that ever made it to print and give them an LGBT twist. Whether your go-to source is the NY Times or the National Enquirer, we want the unusual. We want to be surprised. We appreciate humor, but that doesn’t only mean light-hearted and campy. Feel free to go dark, get serious, and bend genre lines. Stories are due on my desk by May 1, 2016. Chosen writers will receive a small stipend.

How should I submit my work? Please adhere to the following guidelines:
- Title page which includes title of piece; name of playwright, contact information and mailing address; character names with brief descriptions of ages and appearance.
- Play synopsis on Page 2, which must include:
- Names and brief descriptions of main characters
- Main story arc or plot
- Connection to theme
- Categorization: comedy, black comedy, drama, tragedy, etc.
- The synopsis must be 500 words or less
- The body of the play must be blind– no identifying information about the playwright of any kind. Numbered pages, please.
- Plays must be no longer than 15 pages, or read no longer than 15 minutes. No full-length plays or one acts.
- Plays longer than requested or that do not meet the production theme or submitted without synopsis will not be read.
- Please note we are not accepting submissions for musicals at this time, so we will be unable to read any if they are submitted.
- Shows are produced on a small budget, elaborate sets, scene changes, costumes, or excessive props will greatly affect chances of getting produced.

Residencies provide artists a retreat from daily demands, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in creating and refining work. Located in the beautiful countryside of western Maine, Celebration Barn’s 44 year history fuels a super-charged atmosphere that encourages artists to play on their creative edge, to be nurtured and challenged by collaborators, and to launch performance in new directions.

The judges will be members of the Studio Players theater community: board members, directors and patrons. The rules are simple and are as follows:

2. The play must be a 10 minute play (meaning it will be approximately 10 pages long).
3. All plays should be emailed, with a separate cover page, with: play's title, author's name, email address, mailing address and phone number. The play itself should only have the title; no identifying information contained in or on the 10 page script.
4. To be considered, each script must be received by April 30th.
5. The contest is open to the first 150 entries received.
6. Winning entrants agree to a full production of their scripts.

Residencies are available to individuals at all levels of artistic development who are prepared to work independently and whose artistic processes can be successfully supported by the Guild’s studio facilities. Residents must be 18 or older at the start of the residency.

Residencies typically last from 3 weeks - 3 months, and may be scheduled anytime between September 1 and May 31.
how are residencies structured?
Volunteer-based residencies provide artists with lodging, meals, & studio space in exchange for part-time volunteer service to the Guild. These residencies are based on the quality of the applicant’s work and the relevancy of skills they offer the Guild community. Artists in residence commit to spending a minimum of 20 hours/week in the studio working on their own projects, as well as 15-20 hours/week in volunteer service to the Guild community. Resident artists are invited to participate in the Guild's monthly community art group as well as any Guild programming taking place during the residency period.

Infinity Stage (www.InfinityStage.com) is accepting plays and musicals of any length for a non-exclusive online publishing deal. There are no fees to the playwright and no restrictions or demands. You may still pursue any avenue open to you for production or publication. The only thing we ask for is 15% of royalties to help offset the cost of marketing, but only for those opportunities generated from this site. You don't even have to give us a "shout out" in future productions.
Just send a 10-page excerpt (less for shorter works) and the complete script, preferably each in both PDF and word files. For musicals, please also send mp3s or links to at least 3 songs. If you have cover art, please also send that as JPG file. Send all to mistercomposer@gmail.com.

Monday mornings with A. Rey Pamatmat (Writer, House Rules at Ma-Yi Theatre Company; Co-Director, Mi-Ya Writer's Lab)
Led by an all-star team of power players, self-pitching gurus, and business specialists, this class is designed for those of you who have a project ready and need the tips and tricks to package yourself.
What is it you want to say with that play? What perspective do you bring to the piece to make it uniquely yours? And, most importantly, why are you working on it in the first place?
Break down the traditional barriers between actor/director/writer and challenge yourself to become a better collaborator in the room.
This class will guide you through the process of preparing a television treatment primed for pitching. This class meets twice a week to emulate the real-world scenario of turning around a pitch.
Take an in-depth look at how to excite your audience with a hero who is challenged along a meaningful journey and proceed through your second act with two principles in mind: how your hero needs to be tested, and how your audience empathizes and delights in the hero’s process.
Sometimes it’s inevitable: writers just get stuck. This class is designed to bypass intellect, harness spontaneity, and get those emotions flowing, so you can get words on the page.

The Republic and Canton of Geneva, in association with Laps association, founded the Embassy of Foreign Artists - residency for foreign artists, located in the "Praille- Acacias-Vernets" area in 2012.
Under the name Embassy of Foreign Artists and with the participation of foreign creators, local artists and cultural institutions in Geneva, this project aims to create an interactive network that will encourage the development of new approaches and reflection on contemporary urban development

The stay provides:
- A private room as well as a working space and access to common areas shared with other residents;
- A residency of three or six months (the desired length of stay must be specified on the Application Questionnaire);
- A grant of 1200.- Swiss francs per month for the length of the stay.

The open call is addressed to all professional artists coming from following artistic fields: performing arts, visual arts and applied arts (fine arts, dance, theatre, music, literature, cinema, etc.). Be in possession of a wide range of creations, publications and performances at a professional level;
Not be currently registered in a basic artistic training course;

William Shakespeare, Playwright and Poet, Is Dead at 52
“To be or not to be,” said Hamlet, prince of Denmark, “that is the question.” Yesterday, Hamlet’s creator was; today, he is not. Of that there is no question.
Poet, playwright, actor and theatrical-company shareholder, William Shakespeare (sometimes spelled Shakspeare, or Shagspere, or Shaxpere, or Shaxberd, or any number of blessed ways) died today, April 23, 1616, at his home in Stratford-upon-Avon. He was, more or less, 52. His passing was confirmed by his daughter Judith.
Over the course of three decades, Mr. Shakespeare rose from working-class obscurity in Warwickshire to become one of England’s foremost playwrights and poets — acclaimed for his penetrating insights into the human character, his eloquent, flexible and infinitely expressive verse and his readiness to burst the bounds of the English language (drawing on a vocabulary of more than 25,000 words).

- Staging: minimal scenery/stage dressing/sound requirements.

- No musicals, children’s plays, adaptations to works not in the public domain, or plays involving nudity of any kind.

Exquisite Corpse Company is seeking to build a collaborative writing team for an original immersive experience to be presented as part of the company’s upcoming summer season. Inspired by the work of surrealist painter, Rene Magritte, The Enchanted Realm of Rene Magritte, will feature performance, installation, and dance set in an 8 room mansion on Governors Island. Six playwrights will come together to create a surreal story; one that will weave audiences in and out of these spectacular rooms. Magritte’s three panel mural, The Enchanted Realm, will serve as our beginning source material. Writers will collaborate June-July. The show will premiere August 6, 2016 and runs through September. Exquisite Corpse Company invites you to join the team for an unforgettable experience!
How to Submit:
1) Pick a section of the mural that inspires you! Writers will be challenged to create a 10 minute playlet from one of the listed sections of Rene Magritte’s mural, The Enchanted Realm. The word “playlet” is crucial in your understanding of your submission, as writers on this project will be asked to collaborate with fellow writers, make edits, etc. However, each submission should have a complete story arc, and able to stand alone as its own piece.
There are six sections noted as follows: A, B, C, D, E, F.

The 2017/18 CartHorse Fellowship Application

In 2017, Buran Theatre will celebrate ten years. As we approach this milestone, we are proud to unveil the core program for our second decade.
After ten years of producing work generated by the artistic director, Buran Theatre will transition in our second decade to support and produce theatre/performance-based artists through transformative 2-year process-based fellowships. Utilizing the Buran process developed over the past decade by the artistic director and associate artists, CartHorse Fellows will build, produce and present a new theatre work over two rigorous years of development with the support of the company’s resources and talent.
The fellowship will be an immersive experience for artists who are eager to develop their own process; delve deep into a completely new project; gain/build skills in self-production, marketing, development and administration; build a company/family of collaborators under the auspices of Buran Theatre’s creative and organizational capacity; and a means to expand Buran's mission and ethos to pioneering and under-represented artists.
WHAT THE CARTHOUSE FELLOWSHIP ENTAILS
Working closely with the artistic director and associate artists, the CartHorse Fellow will:
-take on artistic role in producing Buran Theatre’s 2017 10th anniversary production;
-partake in administrative, creative, developmental and production meetings and decisions for the 2017 season;
-have access to Buran company resources (space, talent, funding, etc.);
-receive commissioning fee for new work (at least $250 , but could be larger dependent on funding);
-develop a new work throughout 2017/18;
-receive two-week run of production in 2018 in NYC;
-and potentially to tour to Buran satellite system (Albuquerque/Los Angeles/Kansas City/Minneapolis).
We are looking for:
-playwrights/directors/theatre-makers/choreographers/designers/visual artists/composers who have been told their theatrical vision is too wild, wooly, impossible, colorful, and/or unwieldy to produce;
-artists eager for full immersion in Buran Theatre’s process and resources;
-artists prepared to harness administrative and organizational tools to bolster their creative vision;
-artists who want to create work in an environment ripe with Generosity of Spirit;
-artists who are looking for a life in theatre not particularly a career (although the two are not mutually exclusive, ethos is important here);
-ecstatic truths that eschew dramaturgy;
-stories that need new narrative structures to be told;
-and an inclusive stage that challenges, delights, and represents the incredibly deep cultural, racial, generational and gender diversity of the world we live in.
RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS
-All submissions will be anonymous. Please do not reference your name or any affiliations, if you do the application will be deemed ineligible.
-Must be in NYC from January 2017 to December 2018***.
-Must be 23 years or older.
-Must not be in school during the 2-year period.

Two (2) Complimentary tickets to National Black Theatre productions, as well as

Work in partnership with NBT to curate a Playwright’s Workshop and/or

Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
Applicants for the residency may not have had more than two plays produced by professional theaters at the time of application or during the residency. These are defined as productions for which the author and primary artists (actors, directors, and creative collaborators) were compensated and received at least three public performances. Ten-minute or one-act plays and university, college, secondary school, amateur, and Equity showcase/waiver productions are not considered full productions.

2016-17 FELLOWS APPLICATIONS
Applications for the Fellows Program commencing in Fall, 2016 must be received by DGF no later than 5:30pm on April 29, 2016. Please read all of the instructions carefully.
IMPORTANT CHANGES: We have expanded eligibility to include writers who have had one or more professional productions.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants will be eligible for the program with any of the following qualifications: 1.Participation in a graduate program in theatrical writing within the last five years; or 2. Participation in an organized theatrical workshop within the last ten years; or 3. Comparable experience, such as one or more professional productions, and a recommendation by a theater professional or theater educator; or 4. Pertinent, documented practical experience.
All applicants must be residents of New York or the surrounding metropolitan area for the time of their fellowship. Applicants must also be prepared to meet on alternate Monday evenings of every month, and to make themselves available, if possible, to participate in observerships, assistantships, etc. when those opportunities arise.

PLAYWRITING FELLOWS:
Please submit a cover letter answering the following: “Describe an experience in which somebody’s input on your work as a writer affected you”; a resume containing pertinent contact information for you; 20 pages of a script you have written. MUSICAL THEATER FELLOWS:
If you are applying as a Musical Theater Fellow and you write both music and lyrics, you may apply alone as a “self-contained” writer. Members of collaborative teams must apply together. Collaborative teams with composer and lyricist should also consider applying with their librettist partner, or, at the very least, make their librettist partner available whenever that project is being discussed. Unfortunately, we cannot accept people who write only lyrics or only music or only libretti without a writing partner, as we cannot pair collaborators. 2016-17 FELLOWS APPLICATIONS
Applications for the Fellows Program commencing in Fall, 2016 must be received by DGF no later than 5:30pm on April 29, 2016. Please read all of the instructions carefully.
IMPORTANT CHANGES: We have expanded eligibility to include writers who have had one or more professional productions.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants will be eligible for the program with any of the following qualifications: 1.Participation in a graduate program in theatrical writing within the last five years; or 2. Participation in an organized theatrical workshop within the last ten years; or 3. Comparable experience, such as one or more professional productions, and a recommendation by a theater professional or theater educator; or 4. Pertinent, documented practical experience.
All applicants must be residents of New York or the surrounding metropolitan area for the time of their fellowship. Applicants must also be prepared to meet on alternate Monday evenings of every month, and to make themselves available, if possible, to participate in observerships, assistantships, etc. when those opportunities arise.

The Chameleon Theatre Circle (located in the Twin Cities area in Minnesota) is seeking original works that have never been produced. All styles and genres are welcomed (e.g. one-acts, musicals, full length dramas, etc.). The winning plays will be showcased in a concert-format festival in November 2016. All shows submitted will automatically be placed on the slate of shows in consideration for the 2017/2018 season by the Season Planning Committee.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
We are proud to announce that for the 17th consecutive year we are not charging a submission fee! To enter you must complete an entry form, and submit it along with three (3) copies of each script to the address below. We request that copies of the plays be printed double-sided to save on paper, mailing costs, and storage. If you are submitting a musical, also include three (3) copies of a CD of the music.
Do not bind any author identification with your scripts. We will distribute the scripts "blind" to our readers for complete objectivity. Include the show's title on at least the first bound page. Once the winning scripts have been chosen, we will disclose the playwrights' identity to our readers (and the world).
We do not accept plays that have been previously produced. We do accept plays that have had workshops and other readings. Receipt of play(s) will be acknowledged by e-mail only upon request. Scripts are non-returnable.

Musicals are defined as any original play using original or rights permitted musical dialogue to further the story and/or the characters. It's time for our annual script call for our Summer Shorts production!
PRT is seeking up to 7 new 10-minute plays for the production. We are particularly interested in plays by women and minorities, although scripts from all corners are welcome. The script call runs from March 15th through April 15th.
There is no fee to submit a play; however, if selected, the playwright must become a member of Playwrights' Round Table for a minimum of one season. The baseline membership is free.
Following are the submission guidelines:
- Please send all submissions to submissions@theprt.com.
- Scripts should be properly formatted and submitted electronically in .DOC (MS Word 2003), .DOCX (Word 2007 and later) or .PDF format. Other file types are acceptable, but we may ask you to convert them to a new file type if we can't open them.
- We seek original, previously unproduced works. Plays that have been previously workshopped, or presented as a staged reading, are acceptable. Also, if a play has not been produced in Orlando, we will accept it for consideration.
- Plays must be approximately 10 minutes long, or roughly 10 pages.
- Please send TWO copies of your script - one with full authorship information, and one "blind" copy, which omits the name (this is the copy our readers will see). Please include the following information on the title page of your main submission: name, e-mail address, contact phone number, city/country of residence, and a brief synopsis of the play. Please also include a resume or CV, in a separate attachment from the play submission.
- The selected plays will be performed in a small 70-seat black box, so please keep your set requirements very simple. Remember that multiple plays will be presented in one evening, so plays that have minimal tech and set requirements are preferred.
- Cast sizes should be manageable. More than 4-5 in a 10-minute play is too many.
- The deadline for consideration for the script call is April 15th, 2016. If you experience difficulty e-mailing scripts or attachments to this address, as a backup, please send them to info@theprt.com.
- The writers of the selected plays will be notified via email, and granted the option of being produced. If the playwright is not currently a PRT Member, they are required to join PRT prior to production for a minimum of one season. If the playwright chooses not to join, the play will be replaced in the lineup.
- Please submit no more than 2 plays per writer. There is no charge to submit a play.

- When you submit please keep in mind that Lama encourage artistic exploration, provoking and risk-taking writing.
- Short plays are limited to 8 pages in standard playwriting formats. (You can submit your 10 pages play but please keep in mind that we might ask you to make a few cuts.)
- Poems/ Monologues are limited to 2 pages.
- Song samples should be mp3 and no more than 3 minutes.
- One submission per artist.

Athena Project Festival - Plays In Progress Series

Athena Project--located in Denver, Colorado--is proud to announce the call for submissions for its Plays In Progress Series (PIP Series). This Series will take place in Denver at a location to be determined over the course of approximately March-April, 2017, as part of a larger arts festival celebrating the voices of female artists. Four new plays will be selected based on a blind submission process and given a dramaturg, director, cast and workshop level production during the Festival. One play from the PIP Series 2017 will be awarded a full production in March of 2018 based on a combination of a panel of judges and audience vote. Scripts are being accepted from March 4-April 15, 2016.
Submission Guidelines are as follows:
1. Playwright must be female and may only submit ONE full-length script.
2. The play must not have ever had a fully mounted production. Prior workshop presentations are accepted, but the script must be a new version since the time of the workshop.
3. Submission must include:
a. Full copy of script (without playwright contact info*)
b. Character breakdown (without playwright contact info*)
c. Short synopsis of script (300 word limit, without playwright contact info*)
d. Resume
e. Cover letter addressing what the playwright would like to accomplish with the workshop presentation and how she heard about the call for submissions
*Contact info must be listed ONLY on resume and cover letter, not on the script or any other documents (submissions will be read blind). All documents should include the Title of the Play, but no playwright contact information.
4. Plays submitted without all supporting materials included will be disqualified.
5. We recommend the playwright be able to travel to the area for rehearsals as needed if selected, and for at least one workshop production performance at their own expense. We will select 4 playwrights to participate in the PIP Series and hope to strike a balance between local and national work. Exact rehearsal and performance schedules will be worked out with the director, dramaturg, and playwright after all plays are selected.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Plays should be original, short one act plays; ideal length 10-15 minutes with 20-minute maximum. Previously produced plays acceptable. Playwrights may submit up to three (3) plays. Comedic, absurd, dramatic, farcical, musical, etc. are all welcome and encouraged for review. Selected plays will be performed at Theatre 82 in Cranston, Rhode Island, on two consecutive weekends between July 22 and August 13, 2016 (more performance details below).
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: All plays must be received by Friday, April 15, 2016. Any plays received or postmarked past April 15th will not be accepted for review. Plays will be reviewed and judged by a panel of community directors and actors on their artistic and technical merits, and collectively decided on whether they are “selected for performance” or “not selected.” Total number of selected plays is TBD, based on factors including number of submissions, length of plays, etc.
SELECTED PLAYS FOR PERFORMANCE: The OAPF Panel will finalize and announce all selected plays for performance by no later than Thursday, May 31, 2016. All playwrights will receive notification of whether their play(s) were accepted or not. By submitting works, playwrights agree to allow Artists’ Exchange to produce their play(s) in the Festival for the public’s entertainment and benefit.
SELECTED PLAYWRIGHTS: Participation is volunteer; no stipends or monetary prizes are awarded to selected playwrights. All monies collected from ticket sales will benefit Artists’ Exchange/Gateways to Change, Inc. and the continuation of the One Act Play Festival for years to come. Selected playwrights will receive complimentary tickets (amount TBD) and recognition in the playbill, including a personal bio and contact information (if provided).

One Act Play Festival
July 22 - August 13, 2016

Wave 2: August 5-13th
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Plays should be original, short one act plays; ideal length 10-15 minutes with 20-minute maximum. Previously produced plays acceptable. Playwrights may submit up to three (3) plays. Comedic, absurd, dramatic, farcical, musical, etc. are all welcome and encouraged for review. Selected plays will be performed at Theatre 82 in Cranston, Rhode Island, on two consecutive weekends between July 22 and August 13, 2016 (more performance details below).
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: All plays must be received by Friday, April 15, 2016. Any plays received or postmarked past April 15th will not be accepted for review. Plays will be reviewed and judged by a panel of community directors and actors on their artistic and technical merits, and collectively decided on whether they are “selected for performance” or “not selected.” Total number of selected plays is TBD, based on factors including number of submissions, length of plays, etc.
