THINK FAST Short Play Competition 2025

Website

Deadline: November 30, 2024

15-minute plays are accepted for review October and November 2024 for the event in March, 2025.

Submission Instructions
  • Electronic submissions only
  • No fee to submit
  • Plays are accepted for six weeks each fall
  • Only one entry per author
  • E-mail your short play to:OneActFest@TheTheaterProject.org
  • Include in the Subject line: “Submission + The Title of Your Play.”
  • Email submissions must contain this sentence in the body of the email: “If my play is accepted and I choose to take part in the festival, I understand that I will be responsible for the casting and rehearsal of my play and that I will be charged a $100 participation fee.”

If Your Play Is Selected

The Theater Project will supply a stage manager/technical director to oversee the Zoom recording process

Individual productions supply the actors, directors and make their own agreements with actors and directors regarding compensation

Playwrights will be charged a $100 fee to cover the $500 prize as well as the cost of hiring the stage manager/technical director.

The Theater Project does not charge a submission fee for its THINK FAST one-act festival. We do, however, charge a $100 production fee to help cover the cost of the $500 prize as well as the hiring of a stage manager/technical director to work with the productions on their technical needs as well as supervise a rehearsal and record the final performance on TTP’s Zoom platform.

Although we would rather not charge a production fee, the reality is that without help from participating playwrights, we would not be able to offer this showcase for new works.

Short Plays Where the Gays Win ~ free with RSVP

Short Plays Where the Gays Win
by Nolan Kennedy

A staged reading with the LoM Ensemble

Sunday, November 17, 2024 at 5pm
Houghton Hall Arts Community (NY, NY)
Free with RSVP | $10 at the door

This new anthology of plays tackles stories of love, hope, second chances, and chance encounters. Weaving humor, intimacy, awakening, acceptance, and grace, Short Plays Where the Gays Win aims to present gay narratives that don't end in loss and tragedy. Instead, they conjure the alternative—and often untold—moments of gay life that are crushing, quotidian, revelatory, anticipatory, honest, and divine.

This first foray into these pieces will be presented without intermission in a "staged" reading format, followed by a talkback.

The Braid Seeks short plays for The Dreidel Diaries

Website

Deadline: November 1, 2024

The Dreidel Diaries - Stories of life’s gambles and the discoveries that come with taking a big risk.
For our Hanukkah Candlelight Storytelling Event.

Life is a game of chance – with real-world consequences. Did you take a big gamble that paid off in a new career or a passionate romance? Did you play the game only to discover that the prize wasn’t what you really wanted?  Did your luck run out, leaving you to rethink your dreams? And how did Jewish values or identity impact your choices? Send us your witty, woeful, or winning stories of a time when you took a bold risk in life. What happened, and how did it change you?
  • How long can the story be that I’m submitting?
    • For Salon Theatre no more than 1500 words.
    • For StoryNosh no more than 750 words.
  • Please do not submit a full length play.
  • All one-acts must be 5 pages or less with no more than two characters.

Do I have to be Jewish to submit?
No, you need not be Jewish to submit, but we prefer the work to have some Jewish content or Jewish resonance. All are welcome to submit.

Can I submit more than one piece?
Yes. However, each piece needs to be submitted separately.

What if my piece doesn’t fit the theme?
Please do not submit your work unless it fits the theme.

If my work is accepted, is there remunerations?
Yes, all works selected are given an honorarium. Written pieces that are selected for Salon Theatre will be given an honorarium based on the number of times the work is performed in the show for which it was selected. Writers also receive royalties if works are reprised. With StoryNosh, you will win a $100 prize for being selected.

My story has previously been published/produced. Can I still submit?
Previously produced or published work is welcome. Please include production and/or publication history.

Can I submit my musical?
We encourage composers, song-writers, and performers to submit one song from a musical, or one scene with a song with no more than two characters. Full length musicals will be rejected without reading.

Is there an age limit to submit?
Submissions are open to writers of all ages.

Does The Braid assume rights to my piece?
No. You give us permission to distribute your story digitally and/or perform it live. However, you retain all the rights to your story.

When I will be notified if my piece is selected?
We read every piece submitted at least twice, a process that takes time. If we plan to use your work in an upcoming Salon show or StoryNosh, we will contact you by email within two weeks of the performance date or Youtube release date. Please check our website for posting of those dates. If we cannot use your piece this season, we will keep it in our files for possible future use, when it may be better suited to another theme.

What happens if my story is selected?
All selected pieces will be edited and adapted by our skilled dramaturges to fit The Braid’s theatrical style. All edits will receive your approval before production begins.

Your work will then be performed by professional actors and produced by The Braid’s production staff.

You will receive an honorarium for your written piece included in our Salon Theatre based on the number of times it is performed in the show for which it was selected. You will also receive royalties whenever the piece is reprised. With StoryNosh, you will win a $100 prize for being selected.

Why would I submit to StoryNosh instead of a Salon Theatre show?
You can submit to both as long as you do not exceed the word limits for each and your story relates to the theme. StoryNosh just allows us to explore additional themes in a digital format that are different from our Salon Theatre series.

Can I perform my own story?
No. Writers do not perform their own work. However, in rare cases, we will allow a writer/performer to perform their own story. Writer/performers will need to send a performance reel along with their submitted story.

Call for Experimental Theater for Cut Edge NYC 2025

Call for Experimental Theatre Playwrights: CUT / EDGE ~ NYC 2025

NYC, 2025

Playwrights, Application Deadline December 1, 2024

Final decisions by December 15, 2024

NO FEE TO SUBMIT

Please send a writing sample (10 pages), artist statement and resume to
Cut Edge Collective <cutedgecollective@gmail.com>

Join us in 2024 in NYC for our sixth season.

We meet twice monthly, on the second and third Tuesdays of each month (except July and August).

On the second Tuesday of each month, we will hear the work of a single writer out loud (read by professional actors) and discuss this writer’s work. This is an in-person meeting.

On the third Tuesday of each month, we will engage (online) in a moderated philosophical discussion about where we’re at in terms of style, form, the direction of theatre/art today etc. Each accepted writer will have the chance to suggest a topic for the monthly salon, and lead the discussion.  (Past discussions have included what makes a theatrical production experimental; from what/where do we draw our inspiration; censorship in theater; mysticism in theater; differences in ideas of catharsis between East and West; gender issues in written theatre roles; when is spectacle essential to theatre; repetition and play in storytelling, etc.)

PLAYWRIGHTS MAY ONLY MISS FOUR SESSIONS TOTAL (TWO EACH FROM THE WORKSHOP AND SALON).  AFTER THAT, THEY WILL NOT BE ASKED TO PARTICIPATE IN 10-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL.

The Upshot

Upon invitation, the rate is $125 for the year. This covers space to meet for an entire year and a modest stipend for the actors who’ll read our words during the workshop meetings (Cut Edge will cast all readings, if desired by the playwright).  Additionally, it will help defer costs for our annual 10-minute play Festival, available to  all accepted writers (Cut Edge provides TD, SM, rehearsal space options and all marketing).  Lastly, the fee helps underwrite the publication of the plays in the Ten Minute, with each playwright receiving three copies of the antholofy.

(Our 2024 cohort will be presenting their 10-minute plays this February at the Tank, 312 W. 36th Street).

The Breakdown
  • To participate, you must be an experimental theatre writer. What do we mean by this? You must write for live performance and you must be in the process of creating something that isn’t “conventional.” This departure from normative theatre can include dialogue, structure, staging, character and/or character development, format, passage of time or any other manner of pushing at theatrical boundaries. Teach us something.
  • The Cut Edge Collective currently has only a few available slots.  Playwrights will be selected based upon the quality of the work submitted and experimental nature of the work.
  • If you’re in New York City and able to commit to two events monthly in Midtown, and write experimental work for theatre, please send a sample, segment or example and tell us why you want to be a part of the collective.
And So Who Is This For
  • Experimental Theatre Writers
  • Able to Commit to Twice Monthly Meetings, including one in-person in Midtown Manhattan, through 2024
  • Submit Compelling Samples
  • $125 for Space, Actors and Ten Minute Play Festival (early 2025).
Please reach out if you have any questions to: Cut Edge Collective: cutedgecollective@gmail.com

Website

Deadline: November 1, 2024 at 11:59 PM

Premiere Stages is committed to supporting emerging and regional playwrights by developing and producing new plays. Since 2005, the Premiere Play Festival has offered playwrights the opportunity to develop their work in an encouraging, focused environment through discussions, rehearsals, readings, workshops, and Equity productions.

Through the Premiere Play Festival, Premiere Stages has developed many plays that have gone on to have successful productions in New York and at regional theatres throughout the country. We strive to facilitate relationships between writers and theatre professionals who we think will respond to their work, in hopes that plays developed at Premiere will go on to subsequent productions. We offer Play Festival winners the option to retain the coveted “World Premiere” brand on their plays. Additionally, Premiere’s productions are consistently reviewed, scouted by major publishing houses, and honored by the American Theatre Critics Association.

Premiere Stages will accept submissions of unproduced plays written by playwrights affiliated with the greater metropolitan area from September 1, 2024, through November 1, 2024. All plays submitted to the festival are evaluated by a panel of professional theatre producers, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, and publishers. Four to five finalists are subsequently selected for public Equity readings in Spring of 2025.

Awards

Following the Spring readings, one play is selected for an Equity production in the Premiere Stages 2025 season and receives an award of $3000. The runner-up receives a 29-hour staged reading and $1500. The other finalists will each be awarded $1000.
