2016 New Voices Play Festival

web site

Greenbrier Valley Theatre (GVT) is pleased to announce that we are now accepting submissions for our 2016 New Voices Play Festival!

This festival is an opportunity for up-and-coming or accomplished playwrights to submit their work which, upon selection, will be produced on the mainstage at GVT, the State Professional Theatre of West Virginia. The performance of these plays is an invaluable tool for playwrights to workshop what’s working in the play and what may need revision. The New Voices Play Festival has become a popular event among our patrons who are eager to enjoy these new works.

Play Submission Guidelines:

-Plays must be 5- to 10-minute one-act plays.

-Playwrights may submit up to two works for consideration.

-Plays must be unpublished and must not have had a full professional production.

-The subject matter of submitted plays is open; however, excessively strong language is discouraged.

Is this your first time submitting? Here's what happens:

A brief rehearsal process (approximately 10 hours/play) takes place in January with an emphasis placed on clarity, not effect—getting the playwright’s words and story out to the audience. The plays are directed by theatre professionals and experienced community directors who cast actors from our local Lewisburg community. These plays are performed together before a panel of theatre professionals and local audience in attendance. Recognition will be given to the playwright of the 1) audience’s choice and 2) artistic panel’s choice. Additionally, the artistic team will also be providing comments for all of the selected plays with their initial reactions and ways to move forward.

Important to note:

It is a challenge for us to cast youth actors during this time of year. The inclusion of youth characters is not forbidden, but be aware that we may not be able to appropriately cast young characters.

It is also difficult to accommodate larger casts for this festival. We recommend including no more than 6 characters.

There will be no financial award for these plays, even if selected to be performed. However, it will be an opportunity for them to be rehearsed, performed, and received by the Artistic Team of GVT and patrons of GVT who are excited to hear new works.

Submissions will not be returned.

To submit your play electronically, please send a PDF of the script along with a submission form (see below) to: newvoicesplayfestival@gvtheatre.org.

To submit your play by mail: Please submit the full script in a three-brad folder or unbound, along with a submission form. Plays may be submitted to this address:

Greenbrier Valley Theatre
c/o Education Department
113 E Washington St.
Lewisburg, WV 24901

Deadline for Submissions: December 2, 2015

The playwrights of the selected plays will be notified of this decision by December 21, 2015.

Lama Theater Company residency

web site
Facebook page

Lama Theater Company is holding an Artistic Residency in Laguna Apoyo, Nicaragua- January 28th- February 18th, 2016 in collaboration with The Peace Project. Lama will offer 14 interdisciplinary artists from the East Coast, USA to live, create and volunteer in The Peace Project for one month.

WHY? Lama wants to encourage interdisciplinary artists from around the globe to create new work within a supportive environment. We will provide artists the space and time to take risks in ways that further the development of their practice. The residency program allows the artists a rural and serene environment in which to work creatively without distractions. Support to the community via the peace project, will consist of group sessions, collaboration, children’s workshops, and potential partnerships.

HOW? Time set aside for revitalizing the creative spirit, pursuing new trains of thought, or concentrating on an idea already in the works are essential parts of being a productive artist. Lama’s opportunity in Nicaragua offers the practicing artist a tranquil, natural environment in which to think, plan, and work.

TO WHOM? We are accepting submissions for the residency from Playwrights, Musicians and Poets. **Advantage to artists with Theatrical /Acting/ performance artists background but this is not essential.

About us: Lama means WHY in Hebrew. WHY – is a central question of human existence, it’s the leaping off point for all that follows in the pursuit of understanding. Once you begin to ask WHY, you embark on a path of limitless possibilities and that quest for the unknown makes for vital theater.

Our Mission:

The Lama Theater Company is a writer/director-driven, nonprofit company that continually raises questions and encourages bold new writing and directing.

We are fearlessly searching for curious collaborators from within the nation and around the world to inspire different points of view and theatrical visions.

Lama generates new work that explores theatrical, psychological, political and social questions through a dialogue between artists of different disciplines and often of different cultural backgrounds. Our goal is to give the artists a platform to create risk taking and thought provoking theater, theater that will inspire the audience to question the world around them and by that to create a community that enlivens our existence.

The residency is an extension of Lama’s main project - The Monthly Question.

Once a month Lama Theater Company asks a question, and receives submissions from playwrights/poets and musicians. Lama then chooses a few short theatrical pieces that address the question differently and we present them at our cold reading event. This project inspired by a desire to encourage new and bold writing and to create a space for an artist’s community and to challenge artists to write and explore their theatrical voice.

About the Residency

Relevant to the Peace project’s mission and in conjunction with Lama’s mission, the Residency will be based around the Question/ theme- ‘WHY GARBAGE?’. A part of the artist’s work will be focused on environmental and peace issues and themes BUT Lama is strongly interested in what inspires you when you read the question? We are interested in what you are thinking about and how the question might affect the work you do. Gather whatever inspiration the question gives you, and use it to fuel your chosen discipline. The question is open to many interpretations.

There are 3 parts of involvement within the Lama’s month long residency:
Using The Peace Project’s (located in Laguna Apoyo) relaxing environment and beautiful setting to work on your personal creations and personal work plan. The residency is focused on practice and process for the artist. The focus is on the artist and not the completion of a specific work. Residents will have the option to participate in a residence group sessions, lead by Lama’s expert dramaturg (Erez Drigus.) During these sessions he will assist with the artist’s work and help them progress. In these sessions the work will be read out loud and open for group feedback.

Artist will be asked to write and create a piece of work (short play/Monologue/Poem/Song) around Lama’s monthly question of ‘WHY GARBAGE?’. This work will be in collaboration with each other and the dramaturg to create an evening of cold reading performance. “Why Garbage?” will be presented at a final performance in The Peace Project, and in The Kraine theater in New York City for 2 performances in March.

In addition to working on a clearly defined project, resident-fellows are asked to make a substantive contribution to the community via the Peace Project. Support to the community by volunteering and holding children’s workshops, such as English/ Drama/ Music etc. Mostly based around the “Why Garbage?” Theme. Lama’s project manager (Hannah Lunn) will create a volunteering schedule, where 2 artists volunteer for a few hours per day. The enjoyment and the inclusion of the community are priorities within the residency. * A performance with the kids at the end of the residency is optional (as part as the artist’s final performance). As process is our priority, we will witness the project develop without the pressure of an end result, but will aim for that goal.

Residency's schedule: Residents time is self-manageable, except the obligatory sessions: two times a week- a group session on 'why garbage' and continues work on the 'Why Garbage' evening; once a week- a collaboration meeting on the personal projects; once a week- a social gathering.

MORE DETAILS:

The Peace project is a nonprofit organization that has inspired over 25,000 artists, donors, corporations, service businesses, art patrons and others in 70 countries to donate art, money, resources and time which have helped The Peace Project transform tens of thousands of lives worldwide. Its ambitious objective is to change what people think about change. The PP’s heartfelt belief is that people working in unison, in community, are the most powerful agents for change and we are extremely excited to be a part of their environment for a month.

Chosen residents will stay at the peace project with room and board (meals) for an all-inclusive fee of 750 U.S dollars. Due to limited space, there will be 2 artists per room.

Residents are responsible for travel and other living expenses.

-However we will try to support and help all artists with the resident’s fee in December as we have some fundraising events lined up. And we will be buying group travel ticket’s to keep the travel cost low.

Ivy Theatre Company is looking for scripts

web site

Ivy Theatre Company is looking for some awesome scripts for Ivy-ISH (Ideas Sewn Here)! We are looking for plays between 45minutes and full length. The character breakdown must be diverse or the playwright must be open to inclusive casting. If this doesn't apply to you, don't submit.

We are looking for dynamic plays of any content. You are welcome to submit more than one script as long as you feel it serves our mission: we are dedicated to dynamic storytelling that explores the human condition in a visceral way in order to provoke thought and challenge both the artist and the audience. Our work climbs inside, up and over the walls that have confined and silenced the voices of the few and the oppressed. All are welcome to apply, though women, LGBTQIA, and writers of color will receive priority.

Ivy-ISH is the first step in our developmental process, Trellis Project. Scripts chosen for Ivy-ISH will receive a staged reading and will be evaluated for a full production through our Trellis Project. We do not have a limit on the number of plays selected. If it moves us, makes us laugh, or simply intrigues us, we will give you the chance to move forward!

If you have any questions, email ivytheatre@gmail.com, but we encourage you to err on the side of submitting!

Monkeyman Production seeks short plays

web site

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Monkeyman Productions, Toronto's geekiest theatre company, is now accepting submissions for RETURN OF SIMIAN SHOWCASE. We want your short play to be part of our enlivening evening of entertainment, theatre, and laser sounds (PEW PEW). The show would be presented in the distant future, April 2016.

To qualify, your script must:
  • Be no longer than 15 minutes in length
  • Have a cast of 2-4 characters
  • Require minimal tech and encourage suspension of disbelief
As always, we request scripts that get us to the geek – exploring our obsessions with pop and sub-culture. (See our full company mandate below.) This year, we’d also like to focus on scripts that use that obsession to say something about social equity and systems of oppression. Genre literature has always been at the forefront in critiquing society’s treatment of race, class, gender, orientation – we’d like to see some of that in your work.

Your play may:
  • Have had previous readings / productions
  • Be a work-in-progress (playwrights will be welcome to attend rehearsals / work with their directors to develop their scripts – but we will set a cut-off date for any changes)
Send your script as a PDF or DOC/DOCX file to showcase@monkeymanproductions.com

Submissions due by: December 25, 2015
You will be notified of play selections by: January 15, 2016

Production dates to be set for April, 2016

Since 2008, Monkeyman Productions has produced theatre of the futuristic, the freakish, and the fantastic. We examine the obsessions and enthusiasms of a society informed by comic books, monster movies, and video games – speaking the language of Internet addicts, collectors, and true believers. We draw from popular culture just as Shakespeare drew from the common culture of his day – creating our own laser-fueled, zombie-ridden mythologies with a definite eye for the absurd, but also a corresponding empathy for a subject matter which, in the end, encompasses all of us. We are all, in one way or another, geeks. We are all Monkeys.

“Dead and Breathing is provocative, simultaneously heart-tugging and comedic and refreshingly unapologetic in its exploration of sexual identity, the right to die, and faith.

Be prepared for a few unexpected twists and an ending that will leave you on the edge of your seats. This production of Dead and Breathing is a must see! The National Black Theatre is the perfect venue for this type of work, because NBT has a legacy of bringing to the forefront conversations that shifts paradigms, and this is what this production will challenge the audience to do: have a new conversation.” ~Woman Around Town

A New York City Premiere by Chisa Hutchinson, directed by Jonathan McCrory. Cranky old broad, Carolyn Whitlock, has been in hospice for far too long and just wants to die already. When she tries to convince a loud, oversharing, and very Christian nurse to assist her suicide, she has to work harder than she ever has in her privileged life to end it. Through surprising humor and persistent questioning, Dead and Breathing investigates morality, mortality and the intense tug-of-war between the right to die with dignity and the idea of life as a gift.

Prime Playmaking Project

web site

Do you have a sizzler where a read-aloud of just the dialogue could transform any playing space into a chamber of story delight?

Our *Prime Playmaking Project is a "shortcut cooking" method for producing quality theatre. Chosen submissions are loaded onto tablets, rehearsed with fine actors for a few hours, then taken varieties of venues, from formal playing spaces to bars, to living rooms. No stage directions are read out loud. The actors "enter" by standing and "exit" by sitting. It's a pure reading; something akin to campfire storytelling-- through theatrical dialogue.

Do you have a piece that could be categorized as Science fiction, Fantasy or Suspense? Are you interested in having it boiled down to just characters using words to battle?

Chosen authors receive $5.00 for each performance of works under 20 minutes and $10.00 for each performance of works 20-50 minutes and $20.00 for pieces 50 minutes or more. Pieces are frequently used for more than one performance. Prime Playmaking also gives authors an excellent marketing angle for their pieces: A play that needs little to no budget to mount and has been proven (through our performances) able to carry an evening.

R U L E S
(please read all before submitting)

The piece must fit under the categories of either Science Fiction, Fantasy or Suspense.

Though not necessarily limited to 5 characters, the piece requires no more than 5 actors (less is even better).
Contains no physical actions OR it has tastefully-placed interludes of narration to cover actions.
The changes in setting and circumstance are very easy to track just through the dialogue.
Establishes high stakes from the get-go or an atmosphere of danger/outrageousness from the get-go.
Extra points for scripts with more roles for women!
If you don't have anything that fits our qualifications, feel free to refer friends to us and send suggestions of existing published works.

You can send word docs or pdfs to

primesubmissions.pulpstage@gmail.com

If you do not receive a response within 30 days of your submission, please contact us and you will have an update within the week.

American Alliance for Theatre and Education

CALLS FOR UNPUBLISHED PLAYS FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES

The American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE) announces a call for unpublished plays for young audiences as part of the 2015-2016 Unpublished Play Reading Project (UPRP).

The UPRP provides an opportunity for playwrights to receive constructive critiques of their work from noted and professional playwrights, producers, directors, actors and others in the field of youth theatre. An annotated list of plays deemed highly producible is distributed by the AATE Playwrights Network to theatre companies and play publishers, and rehearsed readings of cuttings from selected plays are featured at the annual AATE conference. The AATE Playwrights Network is dedicated to promoting the process of developing new works and informing producers and artistic directors of high quality new scripts for young audiences.

To be considered for the 2015-16 project, scripts must be submitted December 17, 2015, and must conform to the following guidelines.

Guidelines for submissions:

l. Plays should be intended for young audiences ages four through high school age and have a minimum performance length of approximately 35 minutes.

2. Scripts may be previously produced, but must be unpublished and not committed to publication.

3. Supporting materials (resumes, photos, reviews, etc.) should not accompany submissions.

5. We do ask that scripts be submitted via email as a PDF to Jeremy Kisling, project coordinator, jkisling@lctonstage.org

6. The playwright's name must not be visible anywhere on the script. Please include the playwright's name, address, phone, and play title in your email submission.

7. If you choose to send a manuscript via mail – please note that the script cannot be returned. Playwrights should include a self-addressed, stamped postcard for confirmation of receipt of their scripts.

2016 New Voices Play Festival

web site

Greenbrier Valley Theatre (GVT) is pleased to announce that we are now accepting submissions for our 2016 New Voices Play Festival! This festival is an opportunity for up and coming or accomplished playwrights to submit their work which, upon selection, will be produced on the mainstage at GVT, the State Professional Theatre of West Virginia. The performance of these plays is an invaluable tool for playwrights to workshop what’s working in the play and what may need revision. The New Voices Play Festival has become a popular event among our patrons who are eager to enjoy these new works.

Play Submission Guidelines:

● Plays must be 5 to 10 minute one act plays.
● Playwrights may submit up to two works for consideration.
● Plays must be unpublished and must not have had a full professional production.
● The subject matter of submitted plays is open; however, excessively strong language is discouraged.

Is this your first time submitting? Here's what happens: A brief rehearsal process (approximately 10 hours/play) takes place in January with an emphasis placed on clarity, not effect—getting the playwright’s words and story out to the audience.

● It is a challenge for us to cast youth actors during this time of year. The inclusion of youth characters is not forbidden, but be aware that we may not be able to appropriately cast young characters.

● It is also difficult to accommodate larger casts for this festival. We recommend including no more than 6 characters.

● There will be no financial award for these plays, even if selected to be performed. However, it will be an opportunity for them to be rehearsed, performed, and received by the Artistic Team of GVT and patrons of GVT who are excited to hear new works.

● Submissions will not be returned.

Submission forms are available at: http://www.gvtheatre.org/#!__education/newvoicesplayfestival

To submit your play electronically, please send a PDF of the script along with a submission form to: newvoicesplayfestival@gvtheatre.org.

To submit your play by mail:Please submit the full script in a threebrad folder or unbound, along with a submission form. Plays may be submitted to this address:

Greenbrier Valley Theatre
c/o Education Department
113 E Washington St.
Lewisburg, WV 24901
Deadline for Submissions: December 2, 2015

The playwrights of the selected plays will be notified of this decision by December 21, 2015.

For more information, contact: Micah Hein, GVT Teaching Artist

Thank you so much for your time. We look forward to reading your submissions! The GVT Education Team

Jewish Women's Theater Culture Klatch

web site

Culture Klatch

Jewish women used to sit around in coffee klatches sharing everything from family to refrigerators, feminism to free market economies. But those days of sharing have changed. We’re still drinking coffee, only now, we’re at our computers sipping our java and writing our stories.

The Jewish Women’s Theatre, responding to this societal shift, is creating a “Culture Klatch” — a gathering of women in homes to listen to new stories and share thoughts. And oh, drink coffee and eat dessert, too!

Be a part of this culture klatch by submitting your play, monologue, poem, essay, story, song, etc. to the Jewish Women’s Theatre. Material will be read in the JWT signature Salon Theatre with a professional cast.

Please read the guidelines below, and when you’re ready to submit, please send it to info@jewishwomenstheatre.org

Submission Guidelines

Okay, you’re Jewish, that’s a good start, but how “Jewish” do you have to write? When submitting material, consider the following parameters for your submission:
  • Please check the themes of the season and submit accordingly. We will not accept late submissions this year. Thank you!
  • An element of Jewish resonance is important, but your submission does not need to feature being Jewish as the prominent theme or subject.
  • Feature women or a woman’s point of view, but not exclusively. Male characters are welcome.
  • Short one-acts (10 minutes max) and monologues (7 minutes max) are preferred. Will read full-length, but unlikely will produce.
  • 1500 words or less preferred
  • Must be topical for the 21st century. While we consider plays set in another time period, we mostly select contemporary pieces.
  • Small cast a must. One-person shows okay.
  • Previously produced or published work is welcome. Please include production and/or publication history. A new version of a classic or an adaptation from another medium would definitely be of interest.

Although the primary focus of the JWT is on the writing, music is often a part of our events. We encourage composers, song-writers, and performers to submit individual work. Musicals are welcome.

He had many children. What do we learn from his story and how is his journey relatable to your life? Tell us a story that illuminates a universal theme.

English as a Second Language Winner

£2200 sterling will be given for the overall winning playwright of the best play written with English as a second language and a trip to London to see the play being recorded for broadcast on the BBC World Service and to attend a prize-giving evening.
The Georgi Markov Prize

In memory of the writer, BBC World Service journalist and broadcaster Georgi Markov (1929-1978) who championed freedom of creative expression, this prize is for the writer of the script identified by the judges as showing most promise. The script will be selected from the International Radio Playwriting Competition shortlist and will be an entry which, whilst not deemed ready for broadcast in its current form, shows outstanding potential.

The Georgi Markov Prize includes a standard return flight to London, with 2 weeks accommodation – a week of which will be spent with the BBC’s London Radio Drama department and a week with BBC World Service. These 2 weeks will coincide with the making of the winning plays from the International Radio Playwriting Competition and the winner of the Georgi Markov prize will attend the prize-giving ceremony and receive recognition at the same time.

This prize does not include recording or broadcast of the script and there is no cash alternative. The prize has been established by the BBC World Service and the Open University, in association with Annabel and Sasha Markova.

Rules

1. Entry is only open to anyone who is over the age of 18 as at 31 January 2016 who is not normally a resident of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Channel Islands or Isle of Man (“UK”). Individuals who have lived or worked in the UK on a temporary basis for no more than 12 months at the time of entering the competition are also eligible. Professional and previously published writers are eligible to enter, but this is not a requirement of entry. We may require proof of eligibility.

2. Entrants must not be BBC or British Council or The Open University or Commonwealth Foundation employees, their close relatives or any person connected to the competition. Proof of age, identity and eligibility may be requested.

3. Entrants should write a radio play of approximately fifty three minutes’ length on any subject of their choice. Adaptations of novels are not eligible.

4. Plays entered must not have been professionally produced in any medium (an informal play-reading is acceptable; a play-reading with a professional director and in front of a non-paying audience is acceptable, but a performance involving payment to actors and/or a paying audience is not).

5. Plays entered in the competition must not, at the time they are submitted, have been offered for publication, performance or broadcast in any other form or medium to any other person or company. Nor can they, at the time of entry or during the course of the competition, have been entered for any other competition. The winning playwrights will be deemed to have entered into an undertaking not to accept offers for their entries from other broadcasters or publishers before December 2016.

6. All scripts submitted must be approximately 53 minutes in length – this usually equates to a minimum of 45 pages of A4 paper (or equivalent) and a maximum of 65 pages (note, a rough guide is a minute per page; please read and time your play before you send it). The play should have a maximum of six central characters (there may be up to 3 small “doubling” characters too, who don’t have more than a few lines each). There must be no central roles for children.

7. Your script must be accompanied by a short synopsis which outlines the complete story of the play. This must be no more than 400 words.

8. There are two categories for entry. One is for entrants who speak English as a first language and the other is for entrants with English as a second language. The BBC may require proof of eligibility for the selected category before announcing a winner. For translated entries, it is the responsibility of the entrant to ensure the translated script fully complies with these rules and entry requirements and the entrant must have the right to enter into a contract on the translator or translators’ behalf as per Rule 21. No additional payment can be made by the BBC for translations.

9. The play must be written substantially or entirely in English. Unfortunately, we do not have the facility to offer a translation service. Entries that have been translated must acknowledge this fact by giving a credit to the translator or translators. Entries that have been translated will be entered in the English as a first language category.

10. The competition opens on 1 October 2015 and closes on 31 January 2016.
Entries must be received at your British Council office or at the BBC in London by midnight GMT on 31 January 2016. Entries received after this time will not be considered.

11. Entries must be submitted either by by post to the following address: International Playwriting Competition 2016, BBC Radio Drama, Room 6015 BBC Broadcasting House, Portland Place, London W1A 1AA, United Kingdom, or to your local British Council office, or by email to the following email address: radioplay@bbc.co.uk

12. All entries must be accompanied by a completed copy of the entry form which can be downloaded here

13. Entrants can enter individually or as part of a group. If entering as a group, all entrants must meet the entry requirements and be eligible for the same category. No member should have also entered individually. Please note, the prize only includes payment for one airfare per category.

14. In the case of an entry by two or more writers, the BBC will need written or email confirmation from each writer involved that they are prepared to take a share of the prize money and are prepared to receive those funds from a nominee who will be one of the writers, as the prize money will be paid to one individual only. The nominee will be selected by the writers and it will be his or her responsibility to distribute these funds to the other writers and the organisers can take no responsibility for that aspect. As per Clause 8, there will be no additional payment from the BBC for translations.

15. Only one entry per person is permitted including any group entries. If you submit more than one entry, only the first entry received will be considered. Please do not submit plays you have entered before.

16. You may choose to submit your entry under a pseudonym (which will be the name it shall be promoted and published under), however you must include your real name on each entry for verification purposes.

17. All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party. The BBC accepts no liability if entrants ignore these rules and entrants agree to fully indemnify the BBC against any claims by any third party arising from any breach of these rules.

18. Entries must not contain defamatory, obscene or any other unsuitable material, such as that which may cause offence to a wide audience of all ages. Content should not contain excessive swearing or obscene language.

19. Entrants retain the copyright in their entries but grant to the BBC an exclusive licence to broadcast their entry on radio, as well as use it on any online platforms in line with the BBC’s Radio Drama Agreement as agreed with the Radio Writers’ Forum (see 23 below). Entrants reserve certain secondary rights in other media subject to BBC short exclusive options. Entrants also grant a licence to Commonwealth Writers and The Open University to publish extracts of their scripts, along with their name(s), on the Commonwealth Writers and Open University websites and to The Open University to make their content available within OU courses for teaching and learning purposes, including to OU registered students on any secure platform or copy-protected medium.

20. The prize for each of the winners of the English as a 1st language category and the English as a 2nd language category will consist of £2200 sterling and a trip to London (standard airfare and accommodation for one person) to see the winning play being recorded for broadcast on the BBC World Service and attend a prize-giving event. The prize is as stated and cannot be deferred or transferred. There will be no cash alternatives.

21. As with any new play, the BBC may require further drafts and revisions of the winning plays. Winners must be willing and able to undertake redrafting and revision work in conjunction with the BBC and accept that they will work with the Producer on re-writes of the play. This work is likely to take place between June 2016 and September 2016 and the winning entrants will need to keep time free, and remain contactable, to achieve this. This work will be completed with the winning entrant using email or the most suitable method available. We reserve the right to revoke a play’s prize winning status if this work is not completed.

22. The BBC will reserve the right to make minor cuts, changes and edits to the winners' final draft scripts and all editorial control rests with the BBC.

23. You must inform the BBC if any character/s or situation/s in the play relate to real situation/s or real people, either living or dead

24. Subject to a satisfactory recording being made, the winning plays will be broadcast on BBC World Service at some point around Spring 2017. Winners will first be required to enter into a contract with the BBC on the standard terms and conditions applicable for broadcast of BBC Radio Drama. No fee will be payable other than the £2200 sterling offered as prize money for one broadcast cycle and the BBC's standard package of rights under that contract. If repeated on the World Service, a sum of £1100 will be payable for the first repeat cycle and thereafter the BBC will have certain broadcasting and other rights all in accordance with the contract.

25. This competition accords with the BBC's Code of Conduct for Competitions, details of which can be found on the BBC's Standards and Guidelines website:

South Coast Repertory launched the first annual Pacific Playwrights Festival in June 1998. The first festival consisted of five staged readings, workshops and the world premiere of Richard Greenberg's Hurrah at Last, in the final performances of its five-week run.

Since then, the Pacific Playwrights Festival has showcased as many as 10 new American plays each year, including the world premieres of Beau Willimon's The Parisian Woman, Julia Cho's The Language Archive, Amy Freed's The Beard of Avon, Lynn Nottage's Intimate Apparel, Rolin Jones' The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow, Noah Haidle's Mr. Marmalade and Richard Greenberg's Our Mother's Brief Affair.

SCR is currently considering material for the 19th annual Pacific Playwrights Festival, drawing from commissioned work, projects nominated by other theatres and scripts submitted for production consideration.

Playwrights without representation may send a query letter, brief synopsis, complete list of characters and 10-page excerpt to:

Literary Department
South Coast Repertory
P. O. Box 2197
Costa Mesa, CA 92628-2197

After review, we will contact you if we wish to read the entire script. Unsolicited full-length scripts will not be reviewed.

Please Note: We do not accept materials submitted electronically.

Playwrights with professional representation may have their agents send full manuscripts at any time. Please note that—for this purpose—lawyers and law firms do not qualify as "professional representation.

SCR accepts submissions for full-length plays, musicals, translations and adaptations and works for young audiences (approximately fourth-grade level). Unproduced plays are considered for possible inclusion in the NewSCRipts reading series, the Pacific Playwrights Festival and for production on SCR stages.

Amy’s Horse is seeking short plays

web site

Amy’s Horse is seeking short plays, up to 15 minutes in length, to be produced as part of our podcast.

What is Amy’s Horse?

Amy’s Horse is a theatre podcast that produces two short plays per episode. Actors in multiple locations connect to our Vermont studio via the internet for the live recording of the show.

The podcast launched in July, and so far we've produced 14 plays in our first 7 episodes, featuring the work of 13 playwrights and 30 actors! The episodes are available on our website or through the iTunes Store, where the podcast is consistently rated as “New & Noteworthy”.

The goal is to bring together emerging playwrights and established actors to read new works, then chat about them. At the end of each reading, the actors and author stick around to speak about the play and promote their current projects. It’s a very light-hearted, fun, and relaxed atmosphere.

Guidelines:

- Plays should be unpublished at time of submission
- Small casts preferable
- We are mainly seeking comedies, but dramas also considered
- Plays must be a maximum of 15 minutes in length

Most importantly, if you listen to our existing episodes, you’ll see that the plays we select lend themselves to an audio only production. We use minimal sound effects and stage directions, so plays with extensive visual elements or action may not work well in our format. Please submit accordingly.

How to submit:

Please send a PDF copy of your script to submissions@amyshorse.com

We are seeking scripts on an ongoing basis. If you have previously submitted there’s no need to re-submit. Thank you.

web site

Play Contest Details

Lakeshore Players Theatre is accepting submissions for 10-minute plays. Finalist plays will be produced at our Annual Festival in June 2016.

Play submissions will be accepted through November 15, 2015.

Pellets, winner of the 2015 Audience Favorite at Lakeshore’s 11th Annual 10-Minute Play Festival.
Contest Schedule
January 2016: Quarter-finalists for the Festival will be announced
Mid-March 2016: Semi-Finalists will be announced
April 2016: Finalists will be announced

High School Playwrights

High school-aged playwrights are encouraged to enter. Plays must include a letter from a teacher or school administrator, written on school letterhead, verifying that the play was written during high school, in addition to the guidelines below. If the committee chooses to name a high school entry as a finalist for the 12th annual contest, the play will be produced with the other finalists in our festival in June 2016.

All Playwrights

Please read the following rules and requirements carefully. Plays not meeting the requirements will be disqualified.

Submission Guidelines
  • The play should be approximately ten-minutes in length.
  • The play must have no more than five on-stage (speaking and non-speaking) characters.
  • You may submit only one play, so send us your best! Please do not make more than one submission.
  • The play should be in a “play format” making it easy for the readers. (We like 12-point, easy to read fonts, such as Times New Roman or Arial)
  • The play must be unpublished and unproduced at the time of submission to our contest. We do screen for this, so don’t send us your play if it has been produced. (Staged readings are not counted as “produced.”)
  • Submitting your play to our contest grants Lakeshore Players the right to produce your play in our annual festival and photograph and/or videotape it for archival purposes, if it is chosen as a finalist.
Additional Guidelines
The play should have simple technical requirements. There won’t be a set — a few furniture pieces and a few props only — we only have about one minute in between plays to change scenes.
As a community theatre, we want to appeal to the largest possible audience, therefore plays with excessive offensive language are less likely to be selected – please keep that in consideration.
Two ways to submit: Email or Mail.

Your play must be received no later than November 15, 2015 to be eligible.
