Thespis Theater Festival and Venus and Adonis

All genres of shows are welcome in our festivals. If your show has already had a run (in theaters or in other festivals) you can still participate, but only with a completely new cast and crew.

The Thespis Theater Festival is a playwright’s contest designed to offer writers a chance to direct their own shows, helping them to develop a sense of casting, staging, use of lights and direction. With Thespis, it is our intention to give writers a chance to create their vision from the first stroke of their pen to the last scene of their play. Thespis is not only a festival; it’s a competition as well. That means that there are prizes! The winner of the Best Play award will receive a prize of $3,500. Winner of Best Actor will receive $500 and Best Actress, $500. Thespis, as well as our wintertime festival, Venus, is hosted by the Cabrini Repertory Theater, a beautiful proscenium theater in uptown Manhattan.

Plays are considered on a first-come first-served basis. (The earlier you submit, the better your chances are of having your script invited to the festival.) Submissions may close before June 1st if we reach the maximum number of plays our festival can hold.

Or from anywhere else in US, but the director and the cast must be from NY or NJ.
Submissions must be between 30 and 90 minutes long.


Each applicant is fully responsible for all elements of their production. These include directing, casting, stage-managing.

In order to submit a play please send the following via email:
1. A 100 word synopsis of the play
2. The complete script
3. Your telephone number and home address, plus the phone number of one other person in your production that we can contact
4. Your bio

As soon as your play is accepted, you will be sent the festival guidelines.
All plays will be given a three-performance run at the theater.

After all plays have had their three-performance run, the best 6 plays will be selected by the Thespis jury as nominees for the $3,500 prize of Best Play. Those 6 shows will be given a fourth performance.
Along with audience members three judges will also attend your fourth performance. This panel of outside judges will make the final decision about the winning play.
There will also be several nominations for best actor. In addition to the winning actress ($500 prize) and winning Actor ($500).

All winners walk out with their check which they can cash the day after with no limitation.

Winners will be announced during a special prize ceremony at the end of the festival to which the cast and crew of all nominated productions will be invited.

There is no fee to submit your play to the Venus Festival.
Once you are accepted, you will be asked  send in a $200 fee to participate to the festival. That is the only fee you pay, no hidden and surprising costs.
Again, there is no submission fee. Only those plays that are accepted will be required to send in participant payment.

Submissions will be accepted until June 1st.

The Chameleon Theatre Circle's 15th Annual New Play Contest

Rolling Submission Deadline: April 30, 2014

The Chameleon Theatre Circle (located in the Twin Cities area in Minnesota) is seeking original works that have never been produced. All styles and genres are welcomed (i.e. one-acts, musicals, full length dramas, etc.). The winning plays will be showcased in a concert-format festival in September 2014. All shows submitted will automatically be placed on the slate of shows in consideration for the 2015-2016 season by the Season Planning Committee.

We are proud to announce that for the 15th consecutive year we are not charging a submission fee! To enter you must complete an entry form, and submit it along with three (3) copies of each script to the address below. We request that copies of the plays be printed double-sided to save on paper, mailing costs, and storage. Authors located outside the United States that might be interested in submitting their plays via e-mail should contact us at jim@chameleontheatre.org. If you are submitting a musical, also include three (3) copies of a CD of the music or three (3) copies of the score.

Do not bind any author identification with your scripts. We will distribute the scripts "blind" to our readers for complete objectivity. Include the show's title on at least the first bound page. Once the winning scripts have been chosen, we will disclose the playwrights' identity to our readers (and the world).

We do not accept plays that have been previously produced. We do accept plays that have had workshops and other readings. Receipt of play(s) will be acknowledged by e-mail only upon request. Scripts are non-returnable.

As in past years, this year's contest will have multiple categories:

Three to five winners will receive $25 each plus a reading at the New Play Festival. All short plays will be entered in this contest. Generally, scripts of about 15 pages or less will fall into this category.

One to three winners will receive $50 each plus a reading at the New Play Festival. Any play that can be joined with one or two other shows of similar length to make up a complete evening of theatre will be entered in this contest. Generally, scripts of about 20-60 pages will fall into this category.

One to two winners will receive $100 plus a reading at the New Play Festival. Any play that can constitute a complete evening of theatre will be entered in this contest. It is important to note that these shows can be one, two, or more acts, as long as it makes up a complete evening of theatre.

If five or more musicals are submitted, the theatre reserves the right to create a "musical" category. Musicals are defined as any original play using original or rights permitted musical dialogue to further the story and/or the characters. In the absence of enough qualifying scripts, or if the theatre determines not to create an additional category, any musical will be entered into the appropriate category as defined above.

If five or more plays intended for and/or by youth are submitted, the theatre reserves the right to create a "theatre-for-youth" category. Theatre-for-youth plays are defined as any original play intended for young audiences, young participants, or both. In the absence of enough qualifying scripts, or if the theatre determines not to create an additional category, any theatre-for-youth submission will be entered into the appropriate category as defined above.

At the theatre's discretion, we reserve the right to designate or not designate an "Overall Contest Winner" from any category and an "Audience-Favorite Winner" from any category at the conclusion of the New Play Festival. No additional prize money is awarded, just bragging rights.

Each playwright may submit up to two plays in any of these combinations:

  • One full-length play
  • One one-act
  • One ten-minute play
  • One full-length play and one one-act
  • One full-length play and one ten-minute play
  • Two one-act plays
  • Two ten-minute plays
  • One one-act and one ten-minute play

2014 VSA Playwright Discovery Competition Call for One-Act Scripts

The VSA Playwright Discovery Competition invites middle and high school students to take a closer look at the world around them, examine how disability affects their lives and the lives of others, and express their views through the art of script writing. Writers may write from their own experience and observations, or create fictional characters and settings. Scripts can be comedies, dramas, or even musicals-be creative! Young writers with and without disabilities are encouraged to submit a script. Entries may be the work of an individual student or a collaboration by a group of students.

VSA has an innovative and Free Resource Guide for Teachers to help guide teachers and students through the playwriting process.

Conejo Players Theatre submission guidelines

Conejo Players Theatre accepts new full-length plays, comedies, musicals, and plays for children. Musicals should include a demo CD of the songs in addition to the script.

The CPT season is year-round and follows a calendar-year schedule. The upcoming year's season is selected February through May and announced in August.

Women’s Words Contest

The entry period for the Women’s Words Contest (the "Contest"), sponsored by Pride Films and Plays (the “Sponsor”), an Illinois not-for-profit corporation, begins March 15, 2014 at 12:01 am Central Time (CT) and ends May 1, 2014 at 11:59:59 pm CT (the “Entry Period”; May 1, 2014 will be referred to as the “Deadline Date”). Sponsor’s computer is the official time-keeping device for the Contest. Void where prohibited by law.


The Contest is open to all women, regardless of sexual orientation, who are at least eighteen (18) years of age or the age of majority in the state/country/province in which they reside on the date of entry, and who are legal residents of, and physically residing in, one of the fifty (50) United States (excluding Puerto Rico, United States territories, possessions and protectorates, and foreign-based United States military installations), or one of the following countries:

Sponsor, employees of Sponsor, prize donors and all of their respective partners, parent companies, divisions, subsidiaries, affiliates, trustees, franchisees, licensees, distributors, advertising, promotion and public relations agencies and their respective officers, directors, employees, agents, independent contractors, representatives and agencies (collectively, the "Sponsor Entities") are not eligible to participate in the Contest and/or win the Prize (as defined below). Additionally, relatives of such employees and persons living in the same household as such employees (whether related or not) are not eligible to win. For the purposes of this Contest, “relatives” is defined as spouse, domestic partner, parent, in-laws, grandparent, brother, sister, children, and grandchildren.


The Contest is open to both screenplays (or other work for film, including teleplays, etc) and stage plays (including performance art, and spoken word).

All entries submitted into the Contest must be original. Scripts adapted from pre-existing material will not be accepted, unless the author of the script is also the owner of the material from which the script is adapted, or can submit authorization documentation that they have the right to adapt the source material. All submissions must be written in standard script format, in English, and can be no more than 120 8 ½” x 11” pages in length for full length stage or screen, or 45 pages in length for short stage or screen submitted in PDF format. To avoid confusion for the judges, the name of your PDF should be the exact title of your script. Do not include your name in the title, or put any information on or in the script that would identify you and/or your co-author(s), including, without limitation, your name, your co-author’s name(s), your contact information, or your co-author’s contact information. Entrants will be judged only on their script. Entrants will not be allowed to rewrite or correct their scripts once submitted, unless they have advanced to the performance round of the Women’s Words Contest. Do not submit anything with your script, including artwork, tapes, CDs, DVDs, etc. Any additional material accompanying the script will be discarded.

Plays or screenplays with identifying information in the title of the document, or included in any way in the text on a title page or otherwise shall be immediately disqualified and entrance fee will be forfeited.

Scripts that have no production history will be accepted. We will also consider scripts that have been supported with staged readings or workshops as well as scripts that at the time of entry have had one community theater, educational theater, or one non-Equity production (which ran for no more than 25 performances). Plays which have received Equity productions are not eligible.

Plays which do not meet the above requirements will be immediately disqualified and entrance fee will be forfeited.

Be sure to retain a copy of your script(s), because Sponsor it will not be returned.


You can enter the Contest via the Internet only.

There is a fee to enter the Contest (the “Fee”). The fee covers production expenses for the Women’s Words Fest in the fall, including fees for writers. It also supports marketing and fees for actors and directors.

Electronic entries must be paid with Visa/MasterCard/American Express/Discover. The amount of the Fee is based on the date of entry as follows:

Register for the Contest by including your name, your mailing address, your primary phone number (with area code/country code), your cell phone number or alternate phone number (if any) with area code/country code, your birth date, and your e-mail address. Attach a PDF version of your script and e-mail it to pridewomen@gmail.com. Entry can only be made electronically.

You may enter as many scripts as you wish, but each entry form can be accompanied by only one (1) script. Each additional entry will require a separate entry form and separate entry Fee. If submitting a second script there is a $10 discount for the second entry fee. The full entry fee is due for all entries made after that.

Scripts will be read and evaluated by a panel of stage and screen professionals. Past judges include Barb Lhota, Brenda Webb, Ebony Joy, Katherine Brooks, Ky Dickens, Lindsay Bartlett, Marga Gomez, Michelle Paradise, Rebecca Kling, Rolla Selbak, Tara Mallen, Caroline Gage, Vanda, and Wendy Jo Carlton.

If a dispute arises regarding who submitted an online entry, the entry will be deemed submitted by the holder of the e-mail account submitted with the entry as determined by Sponsor.

Entries submitted or received after the Deadline Date will be disqualified.


The Contest winner will be determined by two (2) rounds of judging. Each round will be judged by a panel of judges selected by Sponsor in its sole discretion. Each judge retains the right to stop reading each script after 20 pages if the material is not deemed ready for production, but all scripts shall receive at least one complete reading.

Subject to the provisions of this Paragraph 4, the first round panel judges will judge all eligible entries received by the Deadline Date. That panel may select up to five finalists based on the following judging criteria: characters (20%); dialogue (20%); structure (20%); originality (20%); and overall impression (20%) (collectively, the “Judging Criteria”). Judges’ comments/forms will not be made available to Contest entrants.

On occassion, when the body of excellent entries has been deemed extensive, a round of semi-finalists as choices to the finalists in each category are whittled down. But announcing semi-finalists is not a mandatory step in this competition.

Categories of entry are:
  • Full Length Stage (includes plays, performance art, and spoken word)(120 page max)
  • Short Stage (includes plays, performance art, and spoken word)(45 page max)
  • Full Length Film (includes screenplays and teleplays)(120 page max)

The top two scoring scripts in each category may be performed as staged readings September 19 to 21, 2014, during the Women’s Work Weekend at the Hoover-Leppen Theater at Center On Halsted in Chicago. Authors will be invited to participate in up to ten hours of rehearsal with cast and director prior to the performance.

Notwithstanding anything contained herein to the contrary and in the event that fewer than twenty (20) entries are received by the Deadline Date, the Sponsor has the right to cancel the Contest. In the event of such cancellation, all entry Fees will be returned.

The finalists will be notified on or about June 15, 2014 via telephone and/or e-mail. Each potential finalist, within two (2) days of Sponsor’s first attempt to reach her: (i) cannot be reached, (ii) fails to respond to the notification, (iii) declines to serve as a finalist, and/or (iv) has her notification returned as undeliverable, an alternate winner may be selected in Sponsor’s sole discretion. If the potential winner, within five (5) days of notification, (i) fails to return a completed affidavit of eligibility, liability/publicity release, or other documents(s) as required by Sponsor, (ii) fails to provide Sponsor with a copy of her valid government-issued photo identification or social security number, and/or (iii) is found to be ineligible, an alternate winner may be selected at Sponsor’s sole discretion. Sponsor reserves the right to modify the notification and affidavit/release procedures in connection with the selection of an alternate winner, if any. 

One Contest winner - selected from all the categories - will be announced following the final staged reading. 

In the event of a tie in any judging round, the entry with the highest “overall impression” score will move forward into the next judging round or will be declared the winner in the final judging round. If two or more tied entries have received the same “overall impression” score, the tie will be decided based on the entry with the highest “story and structure” score.


The authors of the full-length works to be performed at the Women’s Work Weekend will receive a prize of $400 each. The authors of the short works selected to be performed at the Women’s Work Weekend will receive a cash prize of $100 each.

Casting for each staged reading will be conducted by Sponsor in advance of that staged reading; cast members for each staged reading will be selected in Sponsor’s sole discretion. Each entrant acknowledges that one performer may perform the role of more than one character in that entrant’s script.

Finalists who wish to attend one or more staged readings are solely responsible for all costs and expenses to attend the reading, including, without limitation, transportation to and from Chicago, housing in Chicago, meals, and ground transportation in Chicago.

There will be no additional prizes awarded to the winner. 

Decisions made by Sponsor are final in all matters, including interpretation of these Official Rules and awarding of the Prizes, and cannot be appealed. No substitutions of the Prizes are offered, except that Sponsor and the Sponsor Entities reserve the right in their sole discretion to substitute a Prize(s) or any portion of a Prize(s) for a prize(s) of equal or greater value. No transfer of a Prize(s) to a third party is permitted and the cash value of a Prize(s) will not be awarded in lieu of a Prize where it applies, except in Sponsor’s sole discretion. Any applicable international, federal, state, and local taxes, including, without limitation, excise tax (including sales tax), and other expenses not specifically set forth herein are the sole responsibility of the Contest finalists and the Prize winner (as applicable).


By entering, each entrant acknowledges and agrees that Sponsor has the non-exclusive, irrevocable, and royalty-free right to make use of that entrant’s submission for judging purposes and to perform that entrant’s work as a staged reading as further described in the PRIZE section above. Each entrant agrees, as a condition of entry, not to exhibit, disseminate, produce or broadcast, or authorize any third party to exhibit, disseminate, produce or broadcast, in any manner, media or format, the work submitted as part of her entry (or portions thereof) for a period of one (1) month following the conclusion of the Contest.


Each Contest entrant represents and warrants the following:

The entry is submitted voluntarily and is not submitted in confidence, and no confidential relationship between the entrant, Sponsor, and Sponsor Entities is intended to be created by these Official Rules or the submission of the entry.

The work is wholly original to the entrant (and any co-authors) and was written solely by the entrant (and any co-authors). Entrant and any co-authors are the sole and exclusive owners of all right, title, and interest in and to the work, and they have the sole, exclusive, and unconditional power and right to submit the work under the terms and conditions of this Contest.

The work has not been copied from any other source or previously broadcast or otherwise distributed or disseminated in any medium or format.

The work is not in the public domain.

The work does not violate the rights or common law, statutory or otherwise, of any person or entity.

Sponsor shall have the right to disqualify any submission which, in Sponsor’s sole judgment, violates the representations and warranties contained in this Paragraph 7. Each entrant agrees that she will obtain, at entrant’s sole cost and expense, the written permission/consent/release of any person or entity depicted or mentioned in the entrant’s submission if in the sole judgment of Sponsor such permission/consent/release is required. If entrant fails to secure such permission/consent/release, Sponsor shall have the right to disqualify the entry.


All entries must be completed in full in order to be eligible. Any attempted form of entry other than as described herein is void. Entries generated by a script, macro, or other automated means will be disqualified. No mechanical reproductions, alterations, or forged entries allowed. Incomplete, illegible, and corrupted entries are void. Sponsor reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual (and her entry) who tampers with the entry process.

Any person who supplies false information, enters by fraudulent means, or is otherwise determined to be in violation of these Official Rules in an attempt to obtain the Prize will forfeit the Prize won and may be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply. You further agree to not knowingly: damage or cause interruption of the Contest; prevent others from using the Contest; or obtain or modify another user's account information without their consent.


Sponsor and Sponsor Entities are not responsible for lost, late, incomplete, destroyed, forged, damaged, tampered with, mass machine generated, unintelligible, incomprehensible, or misdirected entries otherwise not in compliance with these Official Rules, or mail related to or resulting from participation in the Contest. Sponsor and Sponsor Entities are also not responsible for Internet traffic congestion, technical, hardware or software failures of any kind, lost or unavailable network connections, or failed, incomplete, garbled, or delayed software transmissions which may limit an entrant’s ability to participate in the Contest, or damage to user’s system as a result of participation in the Contest or of downloading any information necessary to participate in the Contest. Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to cancel or modify the Contest if the Contest is not capable of running as planned, including, without limitation, any computer virus, malfunction, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failure, or other cause beyond its control which corrupts, threatens, or adversely affects the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper operation of the Contest.

As a condition of entry, you agree to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of Sponsor. Except where prohibited by law, by entering this Contest, you consent to (i) the use of your name, voice, picture, likeness, image and biographical data, and/or any other information contained in your entry in advertising, promotional, and marketing materials by Sponsor and the Sponsor Entities worldwide in all media now known or hereafter discovered (including Sponsor’s and Sponsor Entities’ Web sites) without additional compensation, notice, approval, or review and (ii) the modification, editing, adaptation, electronic alteration, use, assignment, and/or disposal of online entries however it sees fit and for any purpose without any notice or compensation to you or any third parties. By entering this Contest, you agree to waive any right to claim ambiguity with the Official Rules. You acknowledge that if you are chosen as the Contest winner, certain of your personally identifying information may be disclosed to third parties at least as required by law, including, without limitation, on a Winners’ List.

All Prize claims and documents provided by the winners must be verified by Sponsor.

Rising Sun Performance Company is looking for 10-minute play submissions for our monthly Reading Series at The West in Williamsburg.  

As the purpose of the ongoing reading series is to foment new artistic relationships, these plays must be unpublished and the playwrights must be available to attend the reading event. 

Each month the submissions are centered on a theme:

Scripts Wanted for May 31 - June 1 Short Play Lab

Dear Friend in the Theatre,

It's time again to think about the Short Play Lab. New participants are welcome! We had a good turnout last time (Mar. 29 - 30) and have a full load for the April Lab (Apr. 26 - 27). The next Lab is at Roy Arias Stage II, 300 W. 43rd St. 4th floor, New York. 
Whether you've thought about doing a short play in New York but have never tried, or if you're a regular at such events around town, please give a thought to producing a show in the upcoming Short Play Lab. The rules are easy-peasy:
  • Deadline is May 20. Notification will be soon after submission, depending on number of submissions. The sooner you get your script in, the more time you have to prepare. Get that script in pronto!
  • Plays should be 1 - 10 pp. in standard playscript format.* (The shorter the better; shorter plays get priority.) Include a title page, as the first page of the script, with your contact info (preferred means of contact is by email).   
  • Submit scripts in MS-Word.
  • You produce the play whether or not you live in New York.  The SPL provides the theatre.   
  • Productions must be non-union: no showcases please! (And no Equity waivers, either.)
  • Keep production values to a minimum: costumes and hand props are okay. We provide rehearsal cubes, chairs, and a table. You can't leave your stuff in the theatre overnight. 
  • We provide a board op, box office, and venue management.
  • There are no fees. The SPL keeps the door.
  • Tickets are $20. Each playwright and director gets to watch his/her show for free. There are no other comps.
  • There will be a tech rehearsal in the daytime on May 31.  
  • Every play gets 2 performances, 1 on Sat. and 1 on Sun. Each play will be part of 1 of 2 programs: Program A or Program B, but not both. Program A takes place at 7 pm Sat. and 4 pm Sun. Program B takes place at 9 pm Sat. and 2 pm Sun.  
  • We don't do staged readings. Be off-book, please! Plays not off-book during tech will be removed from the line-up.
  • THE MOST POPULAR PRODUCTION IN EACH PROGRAM RECEIVES A CASH PRIZE OF $75. Winners are determined by polling patrons after the performance. We reserve the right to break ties.
*12 pt Times Roman; character names in the middle on their own line; line spaces between speeches and between speeches and stage directions; indented stage directions.   
The SPL is a lot of fun and a good way to see your work on its feet in a supportive environment. It's also a great way to see actors and directors at work, so you can recruit people for later productions.

This Playwrighting competition is open to "every person" without age and geographic restriction, but honoring all laws relating to citizenship and under-age minors participation. Non-citizens must certify legal right to participate in this competition. Minors (children to age 18 years) must have signed parental consent.

Competition is restricted to English language submissions only. No collaborations are accepted--single authorship only.

There are no contractual obligations, or royalties paid to playwrights whose scripts are selected as finalists or competition winning plays for the Festival. However, all finalists will receive recognition awards. Grant Award is $500.

The Festival is a charity fund-raising event for Center of the World Festival, Inc. (hereafter COWFEST). COWFEST is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation. As a public charity, all contributions and donations made to COWFEST are tax-deductible under section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code. COWFEST sponsors special events for charitable purposes. These donations are used to pay for the advertising expenses associated with conducting this Festival. No donation is expected from under-age minor amateur playwrights nor adult hardship cases.

The play must be original and unpublished and unproduced in any type of setting or venue.

The play must be complete in and of itself and not be an incomplete fragment (such as a monologue, etc.) taken from a longer play nor an adaptation of another person's material already published. However, edited (shorten versions) of your own work may be accepted, if source is identified and available for comparison. Adaptations of public domain material, published before year 1900, may be considered if source is identified.

The play must be appropriate for readers’ theatre presentation (no elaborate sets or stage directions). Please read the section on Readers Theatre for more information. We do not conduct, nor send, written evaluations of scripts to playwrights. Play theme must adhere to Social issue topics, such as ecology, justice, peace, equality, crime prevention, freedom of speech, etc. See Theme Rules for more details.

The Festival is for a General Audience base. DO NOT SUBMIT "Mature Audience Only" material. Please consider general audience for appropriate language in your script dialogue.

The plays are limited to 10-minute scripts, which are about ten pages long. Some flexibility: no shorter than 8 minutes and no longer than 12 minutes.

The Play Submission Form must be used as the cover page. The next page shall be the Play Title Sheet, which includes the title of the play, the playwright's name, the list of characters, and setting. Playwrights Agreement also must be signed and sent with your script.

You acknowledge that this is a competition for playwrights who self-identify as amateurs, in various meanings of that word, but excludes playwrights who identify themselves as professionals.

Play must be typewritten (or Word Processed) on 8.5" by 11" paper. Pages should be secured only with a removable binder clip (no staples). Please number each page of the play. The play must be typed in standard play format, using one side of each page only.

You may submit three plays for consideration. However, only one play per author will be chosen as a finalist. A separate submission donation is requested for each different play.

You may submit the play in Word Doc or ".pdf" format by e-mail, accompanied by a ".pdf" of your signed Playwright's Agreement, and ".pdf" of Play Submission Form and Play Title Sheet. In the event that your signature is delivered by e-mail delivery, such signature shall create a valid and binding obligation with the same force and effect as if such ".pdf" signature page were an original of your signature.

2) "Hard-copy" paper "snail-mail" submitted applications with Play Submission Form, Play Title Sheet, and Playwright's Agreement. Send to:

Should your play be selected as a finalist, you are giving the non-exclusive right to the Center of the World Festival to produce and perform the play in readers theatre format from August 15 through August 17, 2014. We encourage the playwright (or a proxy) to be in attendance at this Festival production.

Playwrights will retain copyright and full ownership of their plays. Playwrights will receive sole credit for writing their play.

No changes will be made to the script without permission of the playwright. The director shall be the sole person to give cast and crew notes of production; however, playwrights may give any notes regarding the play production to the director.

After the play is accepted as a finalist, the play may not be withdrawn for any reason. If you are concerned about the quality of production by an amateur readers theatre, please do not submit for this Festival.

The play chosen for grant award will be determined by the spectator audience of the Festival.

Black Rabbit Theatre seeks short plays

Black Rabbit Theatre is looking for submissions from emerging playwrights of 5 to 10 minute theatre pieces regarding the five stages of grief (Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance). The show will consist of 6 actors (3 Men, 3 Women) all in their twenties. You do not need to use all six actors in your piece. The idea is to choose one of the five stages of grief, and write a piece based on that concept (and feel free to be creative with your ideas!). The pieces will be put together in the proper order so that the audience will get to watch the grieving process happen throughout the show, and see how no matter what you are grieving about, the same stages apply. The show will be performed on Sunday, June 15th, 2014, at the The Box Toronto Studio and Theatre.

All of Page 73′s programs are specifically for early-career playwrights. Each year, Page 73 offers five primary programs:

  1. a New York City or world premiere production of a new play that marks the professional premiere of that playwright in New York City;
  2. the P73 Playwriting Fellowship to one playwright;
  3. a week-long summer residency program on the Yale University campus to four playwrights;
  4. Interstate 73, a writing group that consists of six to eight playwrights; and
  5. Page 2, an extensive workshop offering a lengthy rehearsal process and design support to one play in development.

Please note our primary means of receiving submissions for all of our programs is through our Development Programs application.

Though the P73 Playwriting Fellowship is the only program awarded solely on the basis of these applications, participants of the Yale Residency, Interstate 73, Page 2, and the annual production are chosen primarily from playwrights who have gotten to know Page 73 through this application process.

I AM SOUL recognizes one black playwright annually whose work demonstrates exceptional artistic merit and excellence in the field. Alongside NBT’s Theatre Arts Director, the selected playwright will develop a new play during the twelve (12) month residency. The program will provide the playwright with a stipend [pending funding], administrative and dramaturgical support, in-house readings, one 29-hour workshop and a workshop production in NBT’s 2015-16 season.

With I AM SOUL, NBT seeks to deepen the artistic relationship between black theatrical institutions and black playwrights, and to begin to re-establish black theatrical institutions as the foremost supporters and producers of new works created by black playwrights.

Er parading in this room I'd like you to meet. Follow me. These three nattily dressed men; Salvador 'Sal' Biartes, a local muscle man of dubious character, ... Next to him the guy, with the cauliflower ears, Darryl 'Darry' O'Morton,...and Johnny 'The Man' Long, former boxing promoter of suspicious reputation... and last ... but not least... a very sophisticated lady... smartly dressed in fashions of a few years ago is Meechelle Plaisure.     Wellstone Center in the Redwoods Writer Fellowship

    Starting this July, the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods will begin offering month-long fellowships for visiting writers.

    We offer a setting of spectacular beauty sure to inspire any writer not only to find new directions to make progress with a writing project, but also a chance to pamper yourself with a break from many of the pointless distractions of day to day life. A visiting writing fellow can enjoy many hours of solitude, either in the Library House where she or he will be staying, or with a soak in our hot tub or a walk out on our private trails through the redwoods or elsewhere on our 4.7 acres of beautiful land, four miles up from the Pacific Ocean near Santa Cruz, California. Or the visiting writing fellow can also enjoy joining the permanent residents of the WCR for our delicious common meals, prepared with fresh fruit and vegetables from our own organic gardens, eggs from our hens and milk from our goats. We have twice a week morning yoga and regular cooking courses as well.

    Founded in 2002 by Sarah Ringler and Steve Kettmann, the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods was named to San Francisco Magazine’s 2013 “Best of the Bay” issue for its weekend workshops. We are a small community looking to work together to inspire each other through close contact with nature and a commitment to using creativity to make a difference in our lives – and those of others. Writing fellows are invited to join us for three meals a day and encouraged to cook for all of us on occasion.

    The fellowship does not include transportation expenses to come to us, but we will pick you up at a local airport on the day of your arrival. Writing fellows will be asked to join us for at least an hour of work a day in our gardens or orchards, to experience firsthand a connection with nature. Writing fellows will also be asked to lead one weekend writing workshop and to host at least one book event – a book party or reading – for anyone in the Santa Cruz area or larger Bay Area who would like to attend.

    Boston Children's Theater seeks submissions

    The Marcia J. Trimble New Works Program is now accepting submissions for New Works. Please see below for Criteria and Submission Instructions. Each year, three new works will be selected for readings in the Spring.


    Scripts may be plays or musicals, and must meet one or more of the following criteria:
    Adaptations of a Classic or widely-popular Children’s Literature.
    Based on historical events and written from a child or young adult perspective.
    Original scripts or musicals which challenge young audiences in their themes and broaden our conception of what Children’s Theatre ought to be.

    Additional Criteria:
    • Plays must be between 45 and 90 minutes in length.
    • Plays must be produceable with no more than 20 actors.
    • If a musical, orchestration must consist of six or fewer pieces.

    Seeking original ten-minute comedies about libraries for the Dewey Decimal Festival

    The Dewey Decimal Festival seeks ten-minute comedies related to the broad theme of Libraries, for an evening of staged readings sponsored by the non-profit Friends of the Chappaqua Library. Eight plays will be chosen and performed in staged reading format in October 2014 in the state-of-the-art Chappaqua Library Theatre (capacity 200). Actors from local theatre groups will be cast, rehearsed and will perform on-book.

    Plays must be ten-minute comedies, either:

    -- Set in a library (type of library is up to you)
    -- About a library
    -- About or featuring a librarian or librarians
    -- Featuring, or about, or reinterpreting, or otherwise relating to a book that
    will be familiar to most audiences. Adaptations must be clearly parody or in the public domain.
    -- Plays that creatively twist cliches related to libraries, or puns related to libraries
    -- Plays that dare take on the Dewey Decimal system

    Playwrights whose work is chosen for the festival will receive a $5 honorarium. Audiences will vote on their favorite play, and the winner will get bragging rights to the Audience Choice Award.

    Donations to the festival will benefit the Friends of the Chappaqua Library, a non-profit community group that exists to raise funds to support the Chappaqua Public Library in Westchester County, NY. They sponsor dozens of adult, teen, and children's programs available to all Westchester County residents, as well as provide special acquisitions not covered by the library's budget, which are available to any member of the Westchester Library System.

    This June, we are looking for 15 to 18 for our annual NYC (“Only In New York”) Festival of short plays. All plays submitted must be inspired by or focused on New York City and similar topics. We are seeking plays that highlight Quintessential New York moments, experiences, beliefs and more! So sharpen your pencils, charge your laptop or put a new ribbon in your typewriter!     The Steve & Marie Sgouros Theatre is a 55 seat Off-Off Broadway venue located at the historical Players Theater, in the heart of Greenwich Village. The theater will include a basic lighting plot with limited pre-set general light cues and basic sound equipment. A limited number of basic set pieces will be available at the theatre. Additional props, set pieces, etc. may be brought by the individual producing companies; however, we strongly advise that productions be kept as simple as possible.

    On acceptance there is a $100 deposit and a $50 tech fee.

    Mystic Seaport’s 35th Annual Lantern Light Tours

    Mystic Seaport is commissioning a playwright for our 2014 season of Lantern Light Tours.  We are seeking a playwright that will bring a unique and exciting voice to this long-running production while still maintaining the traditional format. Submissions should include a script concept, a script outline, and a writing sample. Submissions are due April 18, 2014. The chosen playwright must be available for 3-4 meetings with the production staff in Mystic, CT. The final draft of the play will be due August 22, 2014. Because of the progressive nature of Lantern Light Tours, the chosen script may be edited for timing throughout the rehearsal process. 

    Submission Materials:
    1. Script Concept
    Concepts should describe the proposed plot in one paragraph. Please be clear and concise. All scripts must be appropriate for a family audience. Mystery elements are acceptable, but not required. Comedy is encouraged. 250 word maximum.
    2. Script Outline
    Outlines should list specific details for each of the five scenes of the script. Please include plot developments, number of characters, and scene locations.
    3. Writing Sample
    Samples should demonstrate strength of dialogue, character, and facility with language. Scripts and screenplays are preferred. 1,500- 2,000 word maximum. Please do not send full-length scripts. Comedy is encouraged. Historically appropriate language may be used, but is not required.

    Lantern Light Tours is a 70 minute progressive or traveling play, set in the year 1876 on Christmas Eve night. The play unfolds through five 8-minute scenes that take place in different exhibit spaces located around the museum grounds. The audience travels the route of the play with the assistance of a Tour Guide who performs as a unique persona from the era. As they travel between scenes, the Tour Guide provides entertainment and historic information through first-person story-telling. This season will be the 35th annual performance of Lantern Light Tours at Mystic Seaport. The production runs for 10 performance nights with up to 40 tours per night. The audience averages a total of 5,000-7,000 people annually.

    Script Requirements:
    • The play must contain a total of 13-15 characters. Each character may only appear in one scene. Characters may be any age or gender you wish, but one character must represent Santa Claus in a literal or figurative way. If represented figuratively, the Santa Claus character should be easily discernible to a child.
    • In addition to the 13-15 characters, the play must also include a Tour Guide. For performances, there will be 14 different Tour Guides. Please consider the Tour Guide an interchangeable character of varying age, gender, and social status that may or may not be an active character in the storyline. You may utilize the Tour Guide as much or as little as you wish in your script.
    • The play must contain a total of 5 scenes. Four scenes may be set in different locations of your choice, but the fifth scene must be located onboard a whaling ship that is in port. Each location should be historically appropriate for a small community in the year 1876.  Location options include, but are not limited to:
    o    A General Store or  place of business
    o    A Cooperage or craftsman’s workshop
    o    The Home of a middle class family
    o    A Tavern or social meeting place
    o    A Meeting House or place of worship
    • Lantern Light Tours is set in the year 1876. All plot points and dialogue should be appropriate to that era but also accessible to a modern audience. Because Santa Claus may be a literal character, magic is an acceptable plot device. Please note that, although set in a specific moment of history, Lantern Light Tours is an entertainment piece and not a historic reenactment. 
    • Lantern Light Tours has traditionally included five elements: a carriage ride, a traditional tavern dance, a fresh-baked ginger cookie, a scene on a historic vessel, and an appearance by Santa Claus. Script outlines may include all of these five elements but are not required to. Please note that the chosen script will be edited to include these five elements for the final draft.
    Production Time-Line
    • April 18, 2014: Playwright submission deadline- all materials must be received by 11:59pm.
    • April 25, 2014: Playwright selected
    • May 2, 2014: First production meeting
    • July 11, 2014: First Draft deadline and second production meeting
    • August 22, 2014: Final Draft deadline
    • October 14, 2014: Third production meeting and first rehearsal with the cast
    • November 24, 2014: Dress Rehearsal (optional)
    • November 29, 2014: Opening Night (optional)

    The selected playwright will be required to sign an agreement with Mystic Seaport in which the playwright agrees, among other things, that Mystic Seaport will own all rights in all works the playwright creates for the Lantern Light Tours.

    Modern Day Griot seeks scripts for "In Transit"

    Modern Day Griot is working with the New York Transit Museum to produce/showcase an experimental, interactive theatrical project called In Transit in June 5 and 6, 2014.

    We are currently seeking one act-plays that explore the art of storytelling as they unfold in the subway cars of the New York subway system.

    Our criteria for submission to the project is that playwrights must be from the New York City area and that scenes must take place on a subway car or platform.

    **Please note that the train cars date from the year 1887 to present day, so submission of period pieces are strongly encouraged.**

    Submission packet must include:

    • A 5-12 page long play (should be 15 minutes max) with an optimum cast size of 2-4 people. The submitted script must be the script proposed for presentation, with no major alterations necessary.

    • A Submissions inquiry letter (one page only) which must include:

    • Brief history of the work

    • Cast size & character breakdown

    • Synopsis of the piece

    Studio4Seattle seeks 10 minute plays

    Studio4Seattle a new company with a mission to create a network of collaborative artists in Seattle and across the country as well as to promote the work of Seattle artists in other areas. 

    We are now in our second season and we're looking for short play submissions (max. 10 minutes). Our first public reading of the year will be in May and the theme is Art.  What is Art?  What does Art mean to you?  Something inspired by a work of Art.  It can be drama, comedy, scene from a larger work, even monologue.  Please don't feel hampered by the prompt.  Ideally submissions will be new work never before performed, but our only real stipulation is that it is new to Seattle.
