PlayPenn Conference seeks full-length scripts

Beginning September 1, PlayPenn will be accepting applications for its 2017 new play development conference; we are pleased to request your full length, unproduced script for consideration. Please review the guidelines carefully and completely before making application. Application materials will be accepted between September 1 and September 30, 2016. Your application must be uploaded and complete by September 30, 2016 or it cannot be considered.

Currently, we are not considering musicals, plays for young audiences or oneperson plays. Also, if you were a 2016 Conference playwright we ask for a one year hiatus from applying.

The 2017 conference will be held in Philadelphia, PA from July 11-30th at The Drake Theatre in Philadelphia, PA. Invited playwrights will have the opportunity to work with a director, dramaturg and Philadelphia-based, professional actors over a 20-day period that allows for 29 hours of rehearsal and staged reading time along with ample time to reflect and write. The work will begin with a three-day roundtable (July 11-13) that will help in laying the collaborative groundwork for the development time ahead. The conference includes two public staged readings that are intended as a part of the process, giving playwrights an opportunity to measure the efficacy of the work accomplished and provide an opportunity to gauge the work ahead. PlayPenn will provide travel for casting for both writer and director, travel to and from the conference, housing, per diem and a stipend.

Applicants should be aware that we are a development conference rather than a festival or showcase for new work. The distinction is important and meaningful to us in the current climate of the increasing commercialization of play development. We work to avoid participation in what has become known as “development hell” by fostering an environment in which risk is rewarded and honest assessment is provided and encouraged. To that end, we focus on the needs of the text. The public Conference readings are intended to present a glimpse into how the text lives off the page rather than how the how the play might be staged in production.


Please follow the instructions to upload your play into our system. Because the database identifies you through your registration, NO NAME SHOULD BE INCLUDED ON ANY DOCUMENT, except your resume.

Please submit the following:

1. An original script in .pdf format with no identifying information (no name on the document). Applications that are submitted in non-pdf format will not be considered

2. Your current resume (pdf)

3. A casting breakdown and the number of actors required (pdf) (no name on the document). Please do not assume that doubling schemes are obvious. We want to know how many actors your play requires in a workshop setting.

4. The play's development and production history (pdf) (no name on the document). Plays that have had readings are eligible. Plays that have been produced or that have been through an extended development process are not eligible

5. An articulation of your goals for the development process using the resources offered by PlayPenn. (pdf) (no name on the document). Please be specific in regard to what aspects of your text you would like to focus on during the course of the conference.

Northern Kentucky University | School of the Arts is once again calling for submissions for its award- winning, 18th Biennial Year End Series Festival of New Plays - THE Y.E.S. FESTIVAL, running April 20-30, 2017

Submissions will be accepted from May 1 - September 30, 2016. The
two selected playwrights will each receive a cash prize of $250 and an expense-paid (travel and accommodations visit to NKU to see their plays in production. Selected plays will receive a full production.


• Full-length plays are eligible. All rights must be fully owned by the author.

• No children’s theatre, one-acts, or reader’s theatre pieces will be considered.

• Adaptations will be considered only if the adapted work is in the public domain.

• A submitted play may not have had a previous professional or university production.

• In deciding which play to submit, a writer should know the festival will be cast with undergraduate student actors. Plays with larger casts are looked upon favorably in the selection process.

• Scripts must be standard sized, legibly typed, and bound. Standard Dramatists Guild format is preferred.

• Submissions (ONE per playwright) should include a one-page synopsis and a cast list with brief character descriptions.


• An entry form must accompany a submitted script (http://artscience.nku.edu/content/dam/SOTA/docs/THEATRE/YF17_flyer_v4.pdf).

• Submissions will be accepted from May 1 until September 30, 2016.

• Enclose a self-addressed stamped postcard if you wish the project director to ac- knowledge receipt of your script.

• Scripts are not returnable unless specifically requested and accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope. Returnable scripts will be mailed back after the selected playwrights have been notified.

Strand Theater seeks 10-minute plays from women

The Strand Theater, now in its 9th year, is the only brick-and-mortar theater in Baltimore this season to present outstanding works written ONLY by women artists. This reflects our mission to champion challenging and provocative theater that especially celebrates women's diverse voices and perspectives supported by the creative talents of all artists.

Each fall, the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts sponsors wonderful free cultural activities across the city under the Free Fall Baltimore umbrella.

Our theme for this year’s Free Fall Baltimore short play festival is “There’s no place like home,” to celebrate our recent move to our wonderful new theatrical home in northeast Baltimore’s Hamilton community. Our Free Fall plays are popular and well-attended.

Submissions are open to women playwrights of all ages. You may address the theme in any way that inspires you. Here are the guidelines:

· Plays may not exceed 10 pages (apart from title page) in standard play format.

· Plays may not exceed 3 characters (no limits on gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation; non-human characters are just fine).

· Title page must include title of play, short synopsis, and author contact information (name, address, e-mail, and phone). Include play title and page number on each page.

· All submissions must be PDFs.

· Due to the volume of submissions anticipated, we will only contact playwrights selected for the festival.

From August 1 - September 30 The Landing Theatre Company accepts ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­full-length plays for ­­­­­­­­­­­­the New American Voices Play Reading Series. Four plays will be selected for staged readings during the Landing Theatre Company's Spring Festival in Houston, Texas. Selected playwrights must attend the readings. A stipend of $100 will be awarded to each winning playwright. Playwrights must cover their own travel expenses.

1. Selected playwrights must attend the festival.

2. Each playwright will be paired with a local director prior to the festival to prepare for the event.

5. One rehearsal will be scheduled when the playwright can attend.

6. The play will then be read in front of an audience, with a moderated discussion of the play afterwards.

Submission Criteria

Submissions must meet the following criteria:

1. Playwright must be a citizen or legal resident of the United States of America.

2. Play must not have been produced.

3. Play must not have had a public reading in the Houston area.

4. Submission must be received on or before September 30th.

5. Submission must be a minimum of 30 pages long and have a minimum run time of 45 minutes.

6. Submission must be in .doc, .pdf or .rtf format.

7. Plays are given blind reads, so there should be no playwright identifiers anywhere on the script. Your name and contact information should only be in the email.

8. Only one play per playwright per submission period.

9. No musicals, children's plays, or one-person plays.

10. Original scripts only. No adaptations or works that involve third party rights.

11. Playwrights will only be notified if your play is selected.

Lady Plays Podcast, a monthly podcast dramatizing new plays by women, is accepting submissions for future podcast episodes. Each episode will consist of a "staged" reading of the play and an optional interview with the playwright. Plays that will easily translate to a "radio" medium and that feature 5 characters or less will take priority at first as the podcast logistics get settled. Plays of all length and style will be considered, writers may submit more than one script.

Shakespeare in the ‘Burg Presents Fourth Annual One-Act Playwriting Competition

Shakespeare in the ‘Burg is pleased to announce our third annual one-act playwriting competition, in conjunction with our Shakespeare in the ‘Burg theater festival scheduled for March 31-April 2, 2017 in Middleburg, VA. There is no fee for this competition. The winning play will be performed during the Shakespeare in the ‘Burg festival.

Please note that you can write in any style you choose; this is not a “Shakespeare” writing competition, so plays in any genre are welcome.

Please bear in mind that your script will be performed for an audience of all ages.

Competition Rules:

Open to all playwrights

Scripts must be original. Musicals, monologues, film scripts and television scripts are not eligible.

Our goal is to produce a one-set show with a small to medium-sized cast, with running times of no less than 25 minutes and no more than one hour. We are all volunteers so no royalties are paid to playwrights and actors and directors are not paid. We do this for the love of theatre and to provide another outlet for playwrights seeking a performance of their work.

No more than one submission per playwright. Give us your best work!

Pint-Sized seeks 10-15 minute pieces

Pint-Sized is an eclectic evening comprising shorts from talented new writers. After sell-out shows at Jermyn Street Theatre and The Pleasance, Pint-Sized is now moving to The Bunker Theatre and their first event at this new venue - six pieces of new writing, all wrapped up with a live band playing tailor-made tracks – kicks off on Monday, 14th November, 2016 at 7:30pm.

And here’s the thing. They’re looking for submissions for their new shows.

Now, just to get your work staged is great, but the Pint-Sized team invites agents and literary departments from major theatres to their evenings so this could provide a handy springboard for your writing career.

What are they after? Well, in their own words: ‘We're looking for 10-15 minute pieces, either excerpts from longer pieces, or short stand-alones. One submission per writer please… There's no need for pieces to fit a particular theme or genre; we do tend to favour character-driven stories, and we can't accommodate big sets or vast technical requirements, but we're always happy to be surprised or challenged. We're interested in telling the stories of people who don't always have a voice, but ultimately if we like a piece and it's feasible to stage, there are very few rules.’

Submissions are now being accepted for the New York's Equity Library Theater One Act Play Festival, to take place in the Winter of 2017 at the new NYPL 53rd street branch auditorium in New York City.

Seeking short plays (no more than 10 pp), from playwrights from the Tri State area only. Also seeking monologues (no more than 4pp). Musicals welcome.
Basic set requirements.

MITF seeks short plays and musicals

We Want Your Short Plays and Musicals

Dear Friend in the Theatre,
MITF is now committed to three Festivals. MITF: Fall is entering its second season. Our Midtown location is safe, clean, convenient, and close to the offices of industry members. It is the Festival of tomorrows' producers today! We set ourselves apart from other festivals because: (1) we are the Festival where new producers work alongside seasoned pros and (2) we have implemented a new Profit Sharing Policy (PSP).* Every play now has the opportunity to earn their piece of the pie!

MITF: Fall is a combination of full-lengths, short plays, and musicals, children's plays, a Variety division (Magic Acts, Improv, Stand-up, Cabaret, Sketch Comedy, etc), the Short Play Lab (maximum 10-minutes), and staged readings. (There is a $250 fee for Staged Readings).
We're looking for any kind of play or musical that fits our guidelines but plays and musicals 30-45 minutes long are really the heart and soul of MITF: Fall and are given the number one priority. Our prioritized list of running times follows:
* Short Subjects and musicals 30-45 min. long.
* Short Subjects and musicals 46 - 60 min. long
* Full-lengths and musicals 61-90 min. long
No matter the length of your play or musical, the following guidelines are applicable:
* Easy to produce in a no-frills festival.
* AEA showcases are welcome.
* Any genre. (Short subjects using guns as props will not be considered; full-lengths can use guns as props).
* Plays must be sent in Word Document or PDF File.
* Pages MUST be numbered and script must be in standard playscript format.**
* The estimated running time of the play must be clearly indicated.

The Festival will take place at the Workshop Theater's Jewel Box Theater, 312 W. 36th St., NYC. MITF: Fall runs from October 29-November 20, 2016.
The Festival provides the WorkShop Theater's Jewel Box Theater, shared scenery (rehearsal cubes, a table, and 4 chairs), and front-of-house staff. Shows must be off book and provide their own board operator, stage manager, and company manager.

To submit a project, mark it clearly "MITF: Fall," and let us know whether it is a full-length, short subject, a musical, a variety act, a 10-min. play for our Short Play Lab, or a staged reading. We'll curate the entries as they come in, so you can start working on them as soon as possible. As this year's SPL's are the weekend before Halloween, plays with a "Halloween" or macabre theme are in demand. THEATRE ROULETTE is MadLab’s annual shorts festival. In its first year, THEATRE ROULETTE began a tradition of an annual shorts festival that has lasted more than 10 years. The first year was an “invitation-only” festival, from there expanded to taking local submissions to taking submission from across the United States to now, receiving over 1500 scripts every year from every corner of the world.


To maximize your chance of selection, please read all the guidelines carefully before submitting.

Theatre Roulette is a juried festival.

Submissions must arrive no later than October 1st, 2016

Submission will be chosen and applicants informed if his/her piece was chosen on/or before January 2nd, 2017.


Scripts should be between 5-30 minutes in length. Scripts of greater lengths will be considered, but due to time constraints, it is unlikely that unsolicited full-length plays will be selected for the festival, unless you are a Nobel or Pulitzer winning writer, in which case, your script will automatically be accepted for production as long as you waive your standard royalty, which would probably be more than the budget for the entire festival. If you are not sure whether or not you have won a Nobel or Pulitzer Prize, please find out through the glory of the world wide web and let us know.

You may submit multiple scripts. If you are submitting multiple scripts, please include them all in a single email.

Please include your name, address, phone number, and email address in the body of your email message.

MadLab will also be accepting full collections of shorts. This would be a group of plays that are meant to be performed together and would constitute a complete night of plays.

Script submissions WILL NOT be returned to the applicant; MadLab will destroy all evidence of your creative instincts upon a funeral pyre at an undisclosed location in order to protect both the innocent and the guilty. Ashes will NOT be returned to you unless you purchase a commemorative urn from MadLab at the bargain basement price of $999.95.

Upstream Artists’ Collective seeks original work for eco-conscious theater company

(BROOKLYN, NY) Now entering its second season, the Upstream Artists’ Collective of Brooklyn, New York is looking for script solicitations from local, national, and international playwrights.

Season 2: Deception will engage the practice of “greenwashing”: businesses falsely marketing their products and services as sustainable. Upstream seeks writers that can use this as inspiration for exciting and provocative new plays.

Upstream Artists’ Collective is a group of interdisciplinary artists making theater with an environmental conscience, seeking to reexamine what it means to be human on a global scale. Upstream develops new work via conventional and devised processes, and reimages existing work with an eco-arts aesthetic.

Ideal submissions will have a focus on environmental and climate change concerns with a story-driven, rather than didactic approach. Sustainability is a core part of the mission; we appreciate plays with potential for minimalist, resourceful, and beautiful design. Special consideration to: full length plays under 90 minutes, plays with music (not musicals), small casts, and poetic storytelling.

Selected scripts may receive readings, workshops, and full productions in our new venue in the Navy Yard neighborhood in Brooklyn.

The deadline for submission to Season 2: Deception is October 1, 2016, though Upstream will accept general script submissions at any time. All submissions must include a full script, character breakdown and description (including any doubling possibilities), and a brief synopsis. Incomplete submissions will not be considered.

We are now accepting submissions for Lama Theater Company’s Monthly Question! The Monthly Question is a reading series of new and bold writing (short plays/ Monologues/ poems/ Songs) around Lama’s monthly question that will be performed at The Kraine Theater, NYC.

Our Mission: Lama means WHY in Hebrew. The Lama Theater Company is a writer/director-driven, nonprofit company that continually raises questions and encourages bold new writing and directing. Lama generates new work that explores theatrical, psychological, political and social questions from within the nation and around the world to inspire different points of view and theatrical visions.

The Initiative seeks to develop new plays by and about women, and the issues that shape their lives. Friendship, political and economic advocacy, sexual satisfaction, aging, gender equality, racial issues, marriage, singlehood, motherhood, careers, and power. The Women Playwright’s Initiative will provide a safe, nurturing environment for play development. Our intention is for the Initiative to culminate in a reading workshop/festival.

The Ivoryton Playhouse invites submissions by women playwrights. For this first season, we are seeking one act plays, with a running time of no longer than about an hour.

INITIATIVE DESCRIPTION: Durango Lively Arts Company (DLAC) is currently accepting submissions for its “Farm to Stage’ play development initiative for playwrights at all career stages. The initial reading round determines the guidelines have been followed. The second reading provides “notes” to the playwrights remaining and selects works to participate with the DLAC assigned Director and Actors in the staged reading round. The staged reading round is where the participants in the workshop round are selected. Following the workshop round the selected pieces will receive a full production. Playwrights participate in each round their work is included. Personal expenses related to participating in the initiative are the responsibility of the playwright. The playwrights of the pieces selected for production will receive a small royalty for each presentation of their work to a paying audience. Playwrights retain all rights to their work. DLAC does request recognition as a participant in the development of the work in subsequent productions. Participation by Southwest Colorado playwrights is especially encouraged.

THEME: The theme of the 2016 initiative is “Crossroads Café” and material submitted should address a crossroad or life changing event for one or more character. The works will be presented on a set depicting a remote Southwestern United States roadside café.

LENGTH: Twenty-minute or less short plays and excerpts of longer works will be accepted. Maximum number of pages accepted, not including title pages, is eighteen. Note: A word count not exceeding 3,400 should meet the length requirements.

FEE: No submission fee

FORMAT: Please use a standard play format such as the sample presented at “Samuel French Formatting Guide”. Playwright’s name, address, phone number, email address and a brief biography are to be on the title page ONLY.

Park Square Theatre submission guidelines

Park Square Theatre welcomes script submissions for consideration in upcoming seasons. Before submitting, please carefully consider whether the script fits our mission and recent production history. We are particularly interested in submissions by women and writers of color. We are also always looking for good “cross-over” pieces that can play to both a general adult audience and offer rich content for school matinees.

Submission Process

Please include a one-page treatment and a 10-page excerpt from the script (full scripts are preferred.) If the submission is a musical, a CD or digital file can accompany the script.

The treatment should include:
  • A brief synopsis of the plot line
  • Cast size
  • Any special production requirements
  • A brief note explaining why you believe the play fits Park Square Theatre’s mission

New Perspectives - Women's Work Lab

The WOMEN’S WORK LAB for short plays provides a supportive and nurturing environment to emerging and mid-career women playwrights. Four to six members are selected each year, along with a similar number of directors. The LAB meets monthly (Sundays) from February through June, allowing for time in between sessions for writers to continue to develop and revise their work in response to feedback. Members are expected to bring work to each session beginning with the development of an original short play based upon an assigned theme. Playwrights receive monthly feedback on their play from the LAB’s group of director/dramaturgs. Feedback is given in a unified manner so playwrights do not have conflicting advice about what to work on. The process creates a collaborative group from which members can draw inspiration and energy. Scripts are then produced in our annual Women's Work Short Play Festival.

The 2016 Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award

The Ziegfeld Club, one of New York City’s first performing arts charities to benefit women is proud to announce the second Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award to honor a female composer in musical theatre. The recipient will be honored in November 2016 at the New Amsterdam Theatre, and will receive a prestigious grant of $10,000 plus a year of professional mentorship. The application for the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award will be open from August 4th through September 9th 2016. The recipient will be selected by an expert panel chosen by The Ziegfeld Club Board of Directors. Two honorable mentions will also be noted.

The grant which aims to celebrate an emerging female composer, or composer/lyricist who compellingly demonstrates financial need, professional initiative, and outstanding artistic promise in musical theatre was inspired by a noticeable lack of female composers being produced on Broadway today. The Ziegfeld Club enables the recipient to put the grant to the best use possible to help further the composer’s creative endeavors. The recipient of last years inaugural Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award is composer/lyricist Masi Asare who in addition to the cash prize received a years mentorship from Tony Award® winners composer Jeanine Tesori and producer Daryl Roth.

The Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award will be given to an emerging female composer or composer-lyricist who compellingly demonstrates financial need, professional initiative, and outstanding artistic promise in musical theater composing.
Eligible candidates for the award must currently reside in the United States and consist of a single female composer or single composer-lyricist.
6 Finalists will be selected and interviewed at the end of September in New York City.
The recipient of the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award will be selected by a committee of industry professionals chosen by the Ziegfeld Club and will be presented at a private reception in New York City in November 2016. Honorable mentions will also be announced.
The recipient of the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award will receive a grant of $10,000, as well as professional mentorship for one year.

Applications for the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award must include the following:

1) Demo recordings of 3 contrasting songs from an original work or works of musical theater, as well as dramatic context. These songs can be from the same or from different shows. Professional recordings are appreciated but not necessary. Piano-and-vocals are sufficient. The songs should be sent as individual MP3 files, and labeled with both the candidate’s name and the songs’ title (Last Name, First Name- Title).Applicants retain all copyright of their work. Please do not submit live recordings.

2) An Artistic Statement of one page or less (no more than 500 words, single-spaced) describing your work in musical theater, and how the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award might aid you in your artistic and professional goals.

3) An up-to-date Resume that lists your experience and production history as an emerging musical theater songwriter. Applicants will be considered eligible as emerging artists if, in the judgment of the committee, they have not already received substantial recognition in American musical theater.

2017 Prize: Submissions Now Open

We are pleased to announce that submissions for the 2017 Milken Playwriting Prize are now open. Starting this year, both produced and unproduced plays written in the past two years will be accepted. Please review the Submission Policy below and submit your play by Thursday, September 15, 2016.

What is the Milken Playwriting Prize?

The Milken Playwriting Prize is a biennial theatre prize for plays that are written for teen actors to perform. The prize is $2,000, with a play development process culminating in a full production at Milken Community Schools. The goal is to encourage skilled playwrights and authors to write extraordinary plays that are suited to teen actors: shorter plays with large casts and more roles for females. Most playwrights today are focused on writing small cast shows for theatres, even though many opportunities exist for larger high school productions throughout the English-speaking world. The Milken Playwriting Prize winner will be widely publicized.

Submission Policy
  • Professional playwrights and authors are especially encouraged to submit. There is no fee and produced plays are now also accepted. Plays must:
  • Be written for teens to perform. This does not mean roles must be teenagers.
  • Have a cast size greater than 10 actors, not 10 roles.
  • Have a majority of female roles (both major roles and total roles).
  • Be between 40 and 100 minutes in length.
  • Be plays, not musicals, adaptations, or screenplays.
  • Be nominated by agents, theatres, major play publishing companies, college theatre professors, and recognized regional playwright organizations. NOTE: Plays that are not nominated can still be submitted online with a query letter, brief synopsis, and the full script. Nominations are strongly preferred.
  • Be uploaded as a PDF, in standard stage play format, with information identifying the playwright ONLY on the script’s title page.

The City Theatre National Award for Short Playwriting Contest

The City Theatre National Award for Short Playwriting furthers the Company’s mission to identify, acknowledge and award excellence in short form dramatic writing. Known for developing and producing ten-minute works by established talents and promising new voices, City Theatre will select up to twenty-five plays from among its annual Contest submissions for special recognition. The National Award is valued at $2,000: the Winning Play will be produced in the annual Summer Shorts festival; the Winning Playwright will earn royalties, a cash prize of $1,000 and be invited to Miami for the festival. Finalists are awarded a certificate, and invited to Miami to attend the CityWrights Weekend for Playwrights (fee waived) and hear a reading of their Finalist Script (*subject to scheduling).

The Summer Shorts Festival is produced annually in Miami during the month of June. Not every play in Summer Shorts is a contest Finalist. Finalist plays are not guaranteed City Theatre productions, but receive preferred consideration in the current or future Summer Shorts festivals, and/or other City Theatre programming, including Summer Shorts, Shorts Gone Wild, Shorts 4 Kids, and its Readings Series. City Theatre Play Submissions Rules and Information.

City Theatre is looking for wonderful short plays (ten minutes) for Summer Shorts and other programming. Having produced hundreds of plays, we want scripts that are lively and timely, hilarious and provocative, poignant and surprising. We look for plays that span style and genre. We will consider bilingual scripts and ten-minute musicals. We have no restriction on the age range of the characters. In other words, we are seeking compelling plays that rise above the ordinary.
Please review the criteria thoroughly before sending your submission.

– Plays will be accepted yearly from August 30th – September 30th.

– Scripts won’t be considered sooner or later!

– Playwrights can submit only one script – send us your best!

– No scripts will be returned – save postage by submitting electronically. No SASE required.

– Each play script must be no more than ten pages long. We start counting when the actual play begins.

– City Theatre will consider previously produced works with a production history included with submission.

– The volume of scripts submitted prevents us from providing feedback or criticism.

– NOTE: City Theatre will only contact playwrights with scripts the company considers for the National Award for Short Playwriting Contest, or we are interested in producing in its various programming. ONLY those playwrights will be contacted in February-March by e-mail or a phone call.

The Hodder Fellowship

The Hodder Fellowship will be given to artists and writers of exceptional promise to pursue independent projects at Princeton University during the academic year. Potential Hodder Fellows are writers, composers, choreographers, visual artists, performance artists, or other kinds of artists or humanists who have “much more than ordinary intellectual and literary gifts”; they are selected more “for promise than for performance.” Given the strength of the applicant pool, most successful Fellows have published a first book or have similar achievements in their own fields; the Hodder is designed to provide Fellows with the “studious leisure” to undertake significant new work.

Alumnae Theatre Company’s New Ideas Festival (NIF) is an annual, three-week juried festival of new plays, works-in-progress and experimental theatre. Each week a different program of up to four plays, as well as a workshopped reading on Saturday at noon, is presented. The 2017 festival, NIF’s 29th season, will run from March 8 to 26, 2017.

NIF offers dramaturgical support, rehearsal and production space, technical support, access to Alumnae Theatre’s costume and props collections, publicity and sold-out houses.

We are now accepting scripts and proposals for the 2017 festival. The deadline for submissions is September 5, 2016; September 15 for Alumnae members. Preference will be given to Canadian scripts and scripts with challenging roles for women of all ages. NIF welcomes voices from diverse communities. We invite you to submit your own play or pass this information along to a playwright you think may be interested.

Submission guidelines
Scripts or proposals should be submitted electronically in PDF or Word format to NIFscripts@gmail.com. Scripts must be original works that have not been previously performed outside of a workshop. They may be in any genre or style, with a running time of 10 to 40 minutes; one act of a full-length play may also be accepted for production. Submissions longer than 40 minutes will be considered for a reading, which will showcase the script development accomplished during the rehearsal period. Each playwright may submit a maximum of two scripts.

No identifying information should be on the script/proposal; please include a cover page providing: • play title; • list and description of characters (including age); • short play synopsis.

Send a separate contact page with the play title, playwright’s name and contact information, and a short bio (75 words or less). NIF does not provide feedback on submissions.

NIF will confirm receipt of submissions within two weeks, and scripts/proposals will be sent to the NIF reading committee. The 2017 festival lineup will be announced in early November, followed by a creative exchange on November 5 to meet and choose directors, and cold reads of all chosen plays on December 6 to 9. Playwrights must be available for the creative exchange and for at least one of the December cold reads dates.
