OBJECT MOVEMENT 2022-2023 INFO & APPLICATION

APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2022—2023 RESIDENCY AND FESTIVAL ARE NOW OPEN AS OF JUNE 13

APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY 5PM ON MONDAY, JULY 18

APPLICANTS WILL BE NOTIFIED BY MONDAY, AUGUST 26

The Object Movement Puppetry Festival is an annual presentation of new short works developed in residence at The Center at West Park. Curated by Maiko Kikuchi, Rowan Magee, Marcella Murray, and Justin Perkins, Object Movement supports the development of new puppetry and object theater by artists in the NYC metro area, culminating in an annual festival of short performances.
ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

For eleven weeks in Fall 2022 and eleven weeks in Spring 2023, a cohort of eight puppetry and object theater artists (or pairs or teams of artists) will meet to share progress on developing new work. Meetings will be in person (whenever possible) on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 9:30pm at the Center at West Park. If necessary, virtual meetings will be held on Zoom. Meetings will be facilitated by the curatorial team: Maiko Kikuchi, Rowan Magee, Marcella Murray, and Justin Perkins. The goal of these meetings is to provide supportive feedback for the artists and a useful but flexible structure for making and sharing work.

Each resident artist will develop a single piece over the course of the residency. There will be a work-in-progress showing for invited audiences at the second-to-last fall meeting on December 6. Completed pieces will be presented in a festival in the Center at West Park’s Sanctuary Theater March 20 through April 1, 2023.
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The 2023 Object Movement Puppetry Festival will take place over two weeks from March 20 through April 1, 2023 in the Center at West Park’s Sanctuary Space. Each week will feature a different program of four original short pieces 10 to 15 minutes long. Each week will include a dedicated tech day for each of the four pieces, a dress rehearsal, and three performances. Festival working days will be Monday—Saturday, 1pm to 10pm with a meal break 5-6pm.

The festival will provide a stage manager and technical director, a rep lighting plot, sound system, and marketing and box office services. Each lead artist or team will be paid an artist fee of $500 at the end of the festival.
