Elephant Ears Reading Series

web site

The Elephant Ears Reading Series is an initiative at Elephant Room Productions to provide a process-oriented program for playwrights.  One of the hardest parts of being a playwright is often the lack of availability for readings and collaboration early on in the writing process.  With Elephant Ears, we aim to get shows read out loud in a private setting early so that playwrights can use their time more efficiently while crafting their new work.  Any playwright is welcome to submit their shows to us.  After receiving your submission, we will be in touch to discuss the vision of the show so far.  One of the project heads will bring in a collection of actors to read the show, record the reading, then ask the actors the questions below.
  • Characters - Their arcs, their motives - Does it all make sense?
  • Events of the piece - Cohesive?
  • Length of the piece - Could it be longer or shorter?
  • Produce-able - could you imagine producing this place? Who could? Who's the audience?
  • Why did they write this piece? What do they hope we get out of this?
  • What questions are you left with after reading/discussing this piece?
The recording of the reading and feedback with then be sent to the playwright.

These readings are going on once a month in both Philadelphia and New York City; that's two readings a month giving playwrights plenty of opportunities to have their plays read.

Please feel free to reach out to us at Submissions@ElephantRoomProductions.com for more details.
