What We're Looking For

We want your off the wall, absurd, and hilarious stories. The odd situations that you stumbled into the middle of, your weird encounters with other humans, or your embarrassing, but cathartic moments. We want to hear all about it!

Look, it's been a long pandemic and we're trapped at home in Austin, Texas, and we're tired of hearing our own stories. SEND US YOURS!

We love stories, but we're also happy to accept your funny 10 minute plays, sketches, poems, etc. If it's funny and can be recorded, we want it. Send it to submissions@storiesfound.com

How Does This Work?

OR, If you have a recording from a prior performance, we can use that too (as long as you own the rights) and will be happy to get it podcast-ready for you.

4. We'll set up a time for a short recorded interview about you and your story.

Frequently Asked Questions


Do I need to be a professional writer or storyteller to submit a story?
Nope! Some of the funniest stories we've ever heard have come from people with no background in writing or performance.

My story is funny, but also serious. Is that okay?
Of course! Just because a story is funny doesn't mean that it can't have a heart or an important lesson was learned. Send it over!

Do you want me to submit a summary or a fully written story? What file type?
Either is fine. We prefer to see a full story, but a summary is fine as long as you can let us the know the overall arc and why the story is funny. Feel free to submit your story in the body of the email or as an attached Word file or PDF. We're also willing to listen to audio files. Send us a link to it or let us know if you have a large file and we will tell you how to get it to us.

Am I telling the story live to you while you record it?
Not unless you want to! Most stories are recorded on your own time, in the privacy of your own home and then sent to us. It's so easy. Do it in one take or 50, it's up to you.

Can I send you a prior recording of one of my stories/performances?
Yes! As long as you own the rights to the recording (or can get permission), then we'd LOVE to use your prior recording.

Can I have an audience while recording my story?
Sure! Feel free to record your story in front of other people and bask in their laughs and applause, OR if we are helping you record your story, we can include a few extra people in the Zoom session as an audience.

Never told a story before and you need help or encouragement?
No problem! Ava is a public speaking/performance coach and she'd be happy to give you some free pointers. We can walk you through the process from outline to recording. You can do this! We want your story! Email Ava at hello@storiesfound.com

Submissions must be a recording of a live performance of original work that has been created in the past year, and must be 8 minutes and 46 seconds in length;

Submissions will be accepted from artists of color who reside in the United States (work submitted by artists under the age of 18 will be considered in a youth category);

The deadline for consideration for the 2021 Virtual Festival is August 31. The archive submission process is currently open-ended (there is no deadline to submit to the archive only).

All submissions received by August 31 will also be eligible for consideration for a 2022 New Play Commission award (up to $17,000 will be awarded to a single project, or smaller amounts to multiple projects).

Call for 10-minute plays: “Bewitching” by The Lionheart Theatre Company

The Lionheart Theatre Company is looking for interested playwrights to submit short, 10-minute plays for consideration for Lionheart’s October Halloween play festival “Bewitching.”

Please note that “Bewitching” will be a live, staged performance. Lionheart is looking for plays that focus on common “spooky” themes, such as horror, the paranormal, the macabre, and general chills and thrills appropriate for late October.

“Bewitching” is intended for audiences 16 and up, so please keep that in mind when submitting scripts.

“Bewitching” will run for four performances, October 21-24, 2021. Selected playwrights will receive $40 royalties to cover the entire run.

Submission Requirements:
– Submitted scripts must be approximately no more than 10 minutes in length when performed.
– Submitted scripts should be for 6 actors or less.
– Submitted scripts can be new or previously produced.

CALL FOR PLAY SUBMISSIONS: DRAMA IN THE TIME OF COVID—AN ANTHOLOGY

Close to 8 million people worldwide have contracted Covid-19. 1 million have died. In the United States alone, over 200,000 have succumbed to this deadly virus, and counting. With no end to the pandemic in sight, the “new normal” involves lockdowns, social distancing, face masks, fear, and political strife.

More than any other creative genre, drama has suffered the hardest during the Covid-19 pandemic. With the closure of theaters worldwide as in plagues of the past, playhouses have been forced to find new ways to reproduce the magic of live theater by going virtual. For smaller venues lacking the resources, many have closed temporarily or permanently shuttered. For playwrights, this reality translates to fewer opportunities to showcase their work, and the virus places in peril the future of live theater and new works.

We seek an anthology to showcase works by playwrights examining Covid-19 in all its permutations. 

We are looking for dramatic works (short plays, performance pieces, monologues, etc.) from diverse playwrights worldwide that speak to the deaths, isolation, social, political, and economic upheaval that have followed in the wake of this pandemic. 

The anthology will be published by FlowerSong Press (https://www.flowersongpress.com/) in Spring 2022.

To submit, send new and un-produced scripts as attachments of no more than 25 pages to covidanthology@gmail.com by August 1, 2021. Include a 50-75 word 3rd-person bio in the body of your email. Plays that have had readings or workshops are acceptable. Format scripts as Microsoft Word or PDF documents only, and include a title page with contact information. 2022 Object Movement Puppetry Residency Program

Object Movement is a CWP Residency Program for the development of new works by puppeteers and object theater artists. Curated by Maiko Kikuchi, Rowan Magee, and Justin Perkins, Object Movement supports the development of new work that addresses eternal human questions and the urgent challenges of our society today through puppetry and object theater, culminating in an annual festival of short performances.

We are delighted to be returning to the theater for the 2021-2022 Object Movement Residency & Festival! Residency meetings will be held on Tuesday evenings with a hybrid of in-person and virtual sessions, and the festival will be entirely in-person with live audiences if COVID safety conditions permit.

The Spring 2022 Object Movement Puppetry Festival is made possible in part by a grant from the Jim Henson Foundation and generous donations from people like you. Thank you for your support!

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

For eleven weeks in Fall 2021 and eleven weeks in Spring 2022, a cohort of eight puppetry and object theater artists (or pairs or teams of artists) will meet to share progress on developing new work. Meetings will be on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30pm and will be a mix of in-person and virtual sessions. In-person meetings will be held at the Center at West Park and virtual meetings will be held on Zoom. Meetings will be facilitated by the curatorial team, which includes Maiko Kikuchi, Rowan Magee, and Justin Perkins. The goal of these meetings is to provide supportive feedback for the artists and a useful but flexible structure for making and sharing work.

Each resident artist will develop a single piece over the course of the residency. There will be a work-in-progress showing for invited audiences at the second-to-last fall meeting on December 7. Completed pieces will be presented in a festival in the Center at West Park’s Sanctuary Theater March 28 through April 9, 2022. 

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The Spring 2022 Object Movement Puppetry Festival will take place over two weeks from March 28 through April 9, 2022 in the Center at West Park’s Sanctuary Theater. Each week will feature a different program of four original short pieces 10 to 15 minutes long. Each week will include a dedicated tech day for each of the four pieces, a dress rehearsal, and three performances.

The festival will provide a stage manager and technical director, a rep lighting plot, basic sound system, and marketing and box office services. Each lead artist or team will be paid 1/16 of the net box office proceeds or $100 (whichever is greater) at the end of the festival.

Both experienced puppetry artists and puppetry beginners with experience in other disciplines are welcome. We are not able to accept applications from full-time students. You may apply as an individual artist, a duo, or a collective/company. Please submit only one application per artist.

We are seeking a diverse cohort of artists of different backgrounds and with different interests and experience levels within the realm of puppetry and object theater. BIPOC artists, LGBTQIA artists, and artists with disabilities are heartily encouraged to apply!

The 2022 Diverse Voices Playwriting Initiative

The 2022 Diverse Voices Playwriting Initiative welcomes submissions for full-length, unproduced plays by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) playwrights in accordance with the mission statement of the Crossroads Project (see below). A diverse panel of judges including faculty, staff, students, and alumni will select one playwright as the winner.

The winning playwright will receive:

• An invitation to Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal, IL as a guest artist in residence for a one-week new play development workshop, culminating in a public staged reading. This residency will also include class visits and an all-School colloquium.
• Travel (within the U.S.), housing, and meals during the residency.
• An honorarium of $500 for the residency.

To be eligible to win, the playwright must be available for a one-week residency in late March 2022 (exact dates TBD).

The deadline for submissions is August 1, 2021 by 11:59 p.m. (central daylight time). There is no entry fee. We only accept electronic submissions in PDF format. Because our staff and resources are limited, we can only consider the first 100 submissions.

Please include in your submission:

• A representative sample from your play up to 15 pages. This does not have to be the first 15 pages of the play.
• A synopsis of the play (max. 250 words).
• A character list with short descriptions for each character (age, ethnicity, gender, occupation, family relationships, etc.)
• A playwright’s statement (max. 400 words). In the statement, describe your inspiration for writing the play, address where you are in the development process, and discuss how a workshop in a university setting can facilitate that process.

Please follow these guidelines when submitting your play:
Submissions must be:

• A full-length play.
• Musicals are not accepted. However, plays with limited music requirements are accepted.
• The primary language of the play must be English.
• There are no other restrictions in subject matter or style.
• A playwright may only submit one play per year. The work must be submitted by the playwright rather than a literary agent or other third party.
• Submissions must be the original work of the playwright, which may include adaptations of fictional or factual material. Translations of other playwrights’ work are not accepted.
• The submitting playwright must be either the owner and controller of the copyright or provide written proof that they have acquired the legal right to use copyrighted material in their work.
• Plays that have been produced or published professionally are ineligible for the competition. Plays that have been presented through staged readings, workshops, university productions, or community theatre productions are eligible.
• A playwright may submit a play that they submitted in a previous year (including finalists) if there have been substantive revisions.

The Crossroads Project reserves the right to accept or reject any submitted play for any reason.

We will contact semi-finalists by the end of October 2021 and ask them to submit the full play.

The winning playwright will be notified by mid-January 2022.

Lost and Found Theatre New Works series open

PlayGround NY Writers Pool

PlayGround, a leading playwright incubator, is in the process of launching our NY expansion, PlayGround-NY, and we are still looking for a few more NY-based early-career playwrights to join our 2021-22 Writers Pool, particularly those writers representing historically excluded communities, including BIPOC, trans/gender non-conforming, and differently-abled. While the official deadline to apply has passed, we’re continuing to accept applications through August 15 through our website and Google form at https://playground-ny.org/submit.

PlayGround is seeking applications for our inaugural (2021-22) PlayGround-NY Writers Pool. Only members of the Writers Pool are invited to submit for the Monday Night PlayGround short play staged reading series, from which each year’s Best of PlayGround are selected. PlayGround releases a prompt on a Friday morning and writers have just four-and-a-half days to write an original ten-minute play inspired by the prompt. Of the submitted scripts, 6 get chosen for a fully-staged, partly-teched, script-in-hand reading led by leading local directors and actors, on fourth Mondays, October-March. Writers not chosen in any given month can participate in PlayGround Recess, with the opportunity to hear their work read aloud by professional actors and receive peer feedback in a private setting. Submissions are due by 11:59pm (ET) on Sunday, August 15, 2021 (EXTENDED DEADLINE). BIPOC, trans/gender non-conforming & differently-abled writers are encouraged to apply!

The PlayGround Writers Pool has featured some of the nation’s most distinguished new writers of the past two decades, including Lauren Yee, Christopher Chen, Aaron Loeb, Geetha Reddy, Vincent Terrell Durham, and Diana Burbano, among others.

Druid New Writing script submission window is now open

The company accepts plays in the English language. For the purposes of clarity: Druid accepts translations of original plays into English which meet our criteria.

How It Works

For the open submission process, a reading panel assists the Artistic Director in assessing your play and ensures that a range of perspectives are brought to bear on each submission.

While Druid gives consideration to all plays submitted within the allotted period, we are not in a position to give a detailed a response to each submission.

The open submission process takes place alongside commissions, workshops, mentoring, public readings and other playwright development initiatives as part of Druid’s commitment to bring new work into production.

Scripts are only accepted via our online form.

This form allows you to upload your script, supply your contact information and provide us with some basic information. It is imperative that you read the guidelines below before considering submitting a script. You will be asked to confirm that your script adheres to all guidelines.

GUIDELINES

Submit only one script per submission window. Once submitted a new draft cannot be resubmitted unless requested.

Submit original work only.

Submit only those plays that have not had a full professional or amateur production. In this light, plays emerging from student productions or from a reading/workshop will be accepted.

Writers whose work has previously been produced by amateur theatre companies are asked to submit only those plays that are not currently intended for a future production.

Druid is not in a position to accept historical / biographical plays. For example, the company is more likely to produce a contemporary, more traditionally-structured play that has a connection to Ireland than an experimental opera about a historical figure with no connection to Ireland.

Druid is not in a position to accept radio scripts, TV scripts or screenplays. Submitted plays must be written for the stage.

Druid is not in a position to accept musicals or plays for children. Plays should be fully completed and have a running time of at least 40 minutes.

Please ensure that you are familiar with Druid’s work before submitting your script. You are expected to submit your script to Druid only if you believe it would be of interest to the company.

The aim of the New Writing process in Druid is to find new writers and voices that can be nourished rather than a finished polished piece of work. Druid looks forward to collaborating, guiding and nurturing writers, building a relationship with those voices who will grace our stages for years to come.

Women Center Stage is now accepting submissions from womxn artists at any stage in their careers

As part of WCS, your piece will be presented during the two-week long festival of original work, full-length pieces from CP’s Off-Broadway season, workshops, panels, and classes.

The festival will take place during the last two weeks of October in New York City.
The deadline for submissions is July 21st, 2021. We will notify all applicants by August 21, 2021.

Women Center Stage, an initiative of Culture Project, New York’s premier home for socially conscious theater, supports and promotes the work of artists who identify as womxn. It also celebrates the unique contribution of womxn to social justice and human rights. The festival has grown into a means of initiating work on all levels, a place for artists to build community, share their stories, and launch provocative and relevant new work.

The Women Center Stage Festival provides a much needed home for exploring new ideas and inspiration, testing out early stages of new work, and putting womxn artists in conversation with new audiences, potential collaborators, mentors and a vibrant community of peers. The aim of WCS is to inspire collaboration, friendship, solidarity, and to create public awareness and engagement.

Since its founding in 1996, the Women Center Stage Festival has grown into a preeminent presenter of powerful art created by womxn. This coming year will mark the festival’s 25th anniversary.

Requirements

Original work that has not been fully produced, by artists who identify as womxn.

No more than 20 minutes in length.

Can be works-in-progress or part of a full-length piece.

We will accept writers with teams but this is not a requirement. (you may choose to perform in and/or direct your own work).

Work can be in the format of a scripted play, dance-theater, dance, poetry, original monologues, physical theater and can include music, video, and experimental elements.

We will also accept re-workings, retellings, deconstructions, and adaptations.

You may submit a script idea, outline, fragment or draft; not necessarily text-based (visual diagrams, storyboards etc).

Ditmas Park 2022 Reading Series

The submission deadline for the Brave New Works 2022 Reading Series is August 15th, 2021. Due to our small staff, only the first 100 plays submitted will be guaranteed consideration and only finalists will be contacted. Finalists will be notified of their status by September 15th, 2021, and final selections will be made by October 30th, 2021.

Three original, full-length plays (under 120 pages) will be selected and given minimally staged readings between January 10th – March 30th, 2022 (if we are unable to have in-person readings due to COVID19, they will be done virtually). Playwrights must be local to the Tri-state area, ideally within a 90-minute commute to Brooklyn, NY as your attendance is requested. Brooklyn-based playwrights will be given first consideration. Chosen playwrights will receive a $350 stipend.

To be considered, plays must meet the following criteria:

No previously produced plays, although previous staged readings/workshops are not disqualifying factors.

The play must be completed at the time of submission – unfinished or partial drafts cannot be accepted at this time. Plays may still be in development, but they must be audience-ready at the time of submission. If the play is heavily revised AFTER being submitted, it MUST be resubmitted before the end of the submission period.

Plays must be able to be read by no more than 7 actors and someone on stage directions. If double and triple casting is possible, please advise. We are interested in plays that feature diverse casts.

We are unable to accept new musical submissions at this time, given the limited technical nature of this reading series.

Teatro Chelsea is now taking submissions for the Second A-Tipico Latinx New Play Festival, taking place October 20–23, 2021 in-person at the Chelsea Theatre Works Blackbox.

Teatro Chelsea is soliciting submissions of plays by Latinx playwrights for their A-Tipico New Play Festival. We encourage local, national and international artists to submit full-length plays during our open submission process. 

A-Típico was born out of a desire to see a more diverse set of stories told about our Latinx communities. It is a place to foster Latinx playwrights and spotlight those stories that so often go untold. In this upcoming iteration of the festival we want to highlight a variety of plays, including stories about and by Afro-Latines, indigenous Latines, and queer Latines. 

Following the submission process, Teatro Chelsea will select four plays to receive staged readings in the festival. Three of the selected plays will be presented in-person at the Chelsea Theatreworks Blackbox and one play will be presented virtually via Zoom.

Their selection will be vetted by Teatro Chelsea’s creative team and the final scripts will be considered for a full production in the Spring 2022 or 2023 season.

If selected, this opportunity will pay a stipend of $250.

Qualifications

The works submitted must meet the following criteria:

--The playwright must be 18 years of age.

--The play must not have had a professional production, or be scheduled to have a professional production, prior to June 1, 2022. A professional production means a fully staged production with a full rehearsal process and all of the theatrical elements traditionally expected are present.

--We are seeking to develop plays of all shapes and sizes; however, we are prioritizing full-length plays. One acts, Solo pieces, theatre for young audience pieces will still be accepted and put under consideration.

--We accept both original and adapted works, provided that the rights to any material not in the public domain have been granted.

--There will be one round of reading for outside readers and each reader will read between 5 and 10 scripts. There will be a second round of reading of a short listed selection of submissions. A final third round of reading will be done by Teatro’s Artistic Team in order to select the finalists from a short-list of scripts that have been evaluated in rounds one and two of reading.

--The reading of scripts will take place over a one month period and the four scripts will be chosen no later than the end of August 2021.

Play Group is a two year residency in which members become a part of the Ars Nova Resident Artist community. In addition to biweekly meetings where members share new work and receive feedback from their Play Group peers, members also receive dramaturgical support and artistic match-making advice from the Ars Nova artistic staff; invitations to Ars Nova shows, Resident Artists mixers, and to see the work of Play Group alums around the city; two Play Group writing retreats; and the opportunity to further develop and showcase one of their plays in a weeklong workshop that can culminate in a public reading. All playwrights who identify as emerging and who are able to attend meetings in NYC are eligible to apply. In selecting new members, we will take into account the writing in the submitted play (all plays are read in their entirety), how/if the writer stands to benefit from membership at this point in their career, what they would bring to the other writers in the group, and the overall balance of voices, styles and experiences in Play Group.

2022 Lanesboro Artist Residency Program

The Lanesboro Artist Residency Program offers two or four week residencies to emerging artists driven to explore ways in which their work can be applied to the community and how Lanesboro’s rural community can inform their work. The Lanesboro Artist Residency Program, located in Lanesboro, MN (pop. 754), is supported by the Jerome Foundation and aims to provide an immersive, meaningful experience for emerging artists from Minnesota and the five boroughs of New York City. The program is unique in that it provides an entire rural community and its myriad assets as a catalytic vehicle for engagement and artistic experimentation, with staff working with each resident to create a fully-customized residency experience.

Lanesboro Arts’ goal is to be flexible and accommodating to artists, allowing them access to local resources needed for conceptualizing and realizing their place-based work. Lanesboro Arts recognizes “place-based work” as work that is specifically inspired by and designed for the place in which the work takes place; it can be a new project, or an interpretation of the artist’s current work tailored to engage the community of Lanesboro. The residency program was designed to align with and amplify Lanesboro Arts’ vision for communities–especially rural communities–to embrace artists as economic drivers, culture bearers, community builders, and problem solvers. Stay True, An LGBTQ+ Theatre Company is seeking submissions for a holiday play

Stay True, An LGBTQ+ Theatre Company based in New York City is seeking submissions for a holiday play to be produced as part of their 2021/2022 Season. The play should take place around one of the major winter holidays and center LGBTQIA+ characters. Special considation will be given to works that celebrate queer joy or feature characters with intersectional identities. 

The play should be full length (around 90 minutes), no intermission is preferred and plays with music or small musicals will also be considered. 

The play can be previously produced or an unproduced new work. 

Preference will be given to plays that can be performed with a cast of five actors or less. 

The production will be directed by Stay True’s Founding Artistic Director Andrew Victor Myers.

This production will be held in the late fall or winter of 2021. The performance will tentatively be recorded and distributed virtually, but rehearsals may be held in person, with COVID safety protocols in place. Auditions will be in August with the rehearsal process starting in September

TEDxAsburyPark seeks short plays

In its 10th season, TEDxAsburyPark is broadening its commitment to ideas by seeking short original plays to be produced and directed for a Zoom audience.

Plays must have a running time of less than 25 minutes, involve a small cast and be suitable for Zoom or a simple production. As a lab, our directed and rehearsed productions will involve the playwright, and all sessions, including the final production, will be recorded.

Submissions should include a tight summary with character descriptions and a working script.

The final production will be offered to a live online audience where we typically host 200-800 attendees, to be followed by a panel discussion with the playwright, director and cast.

The final production will be hosted on our YouTube channel, which has had over 6 million views.

If selected, the playwright will grant a limited use license of the recorded work to be hosted on YouTube, with links to our social media, and at our option, to be produced for a live audience by TEDxAsburyPark and its affiliates.

Casting will be an open call with director, and the playwright is free to invite actors as part of the process.

Important: We can only review small cast plays between 10 and 30 minutes in length.

Submissions will be evaluated on originality, an idea worth spreading, language, and suitability for virtual production. We will only retain about 10% of submitted plays for potential productions and readings. We will get back to you promptly, usually within 30 days of submission.

Nancy Dean Lesbian Playwriting Award

The Nancy Dean award for Lesbian Playwrights is to honor a woman who was at the forefront of Lesbian, queer, gay, genderqueer, gender-nonconforming, trans, intersex and people of color movements. We honor her focus and writing on Lesbian relationships before the time of the Stonewall rebellion. Her writings were the precursor to social change. In that spirit of struggle and often hidden desire we encourage the submission of new plays that address the conflict of lesbian, queer or gay, trans and nonbinary women struggling to live and love their best lives. In these times of social definition and refinement the age-old conflict of acceptance and the right to live our true lives as we truly are is still our continuing fight which is refined and embolden by each new generation.

We understand people have their own language for their gender and sexuality. We are open to submission from people who are lesbian, queer or gay, trans and nonbinary.

As we are a small family foundation with an all-volunteer board, we must rely on nominations to identify potential recipients. We are asking professors, teachers, artistic directors, directors, literary managers, actors, writers, and others to nominate promising writers. As we want to be inclusive, we will allow people to self-nominate. The following are our guidelines:

• Writer is lesbian, queer or gay and nonbinary;
• Writer has written at least one play;
• Writer is writing plays about lesbians;
• Writer is committed to writing plays and furthering her/their career;

Clay & Water 2022 Playwrights' Retreat

We are looking for a radio play or series that in some way touches upon ideas around building a sustainable society. We will consider all genres – comedy, drama, science fiction, mystery, crime etc. – but stories must engage with the idea of environmentally sustainable practices and/or sustainable societies see guidelines.

Length/format: choose one of three categories

• 45 minute drama
• 6 x 30 minute series: send sample/pilot episode + 3 pages outlining remaining episodes (these should be ready as we will ask for them if shortlisted).
• 5 x 15 minute series: send the first two 15 minutes episodes and an outline of the further 3 episodes (these should be ready as we will ask for them if shortlisted).

Prize: Free script appraisal and treatment by the Literary Consultancy.

Opportunities for finalists: BBC Writers room have agreed to read the top five scripts and follow up with any writers they think have promise. In addition, Whistledown Productions produce programmes for radio and have agreed to look at the top entries.

Eligibility: Open to all, as long as it has not been published elsewhere. All submissions must be in English and conform to the green stories criteria of showing a positive vision of what a sustainable society might look like or in some way smuggling in green solutions/policies/characters in the context of an otherwise mainstream story. The Stephen Joseph Theatre has a proud history of producing exciting, inspiring, world-class new writing. As well as producing the world premieres of Alan Ayckbourn’s plays, we have produced new writing by playwrights including Torben Betts, Vanessa Brooks, Fiona Evans, Tim Firth, Vicky Ireland, Dawn King, Stephen Mallatratt and Claudine Toutoungi.

If you have written a brilliant play which you think would be a great fit for the SJT, we would like to hear from you.

We are currently looking for:

· New, original plays

· Plays with a focus on local/regional stories, ideally Yorkshire or coastal

· Plays which are bold and theatrically adventurous

· Adaptations of books/films (if you already have the adaptation rights)

· Plays with female protagonists and at least 50% female characters

· Work for families and young people

· New musicals

Female writers, ethnically diverse writers and writers from diverse socio-economic backgrounds are currently under-represented in our submissions, therefore we are particularly interested in receiving plays from these writers. The SJT is committed to engaging with artists from a wide range of backgrounds and identities, because we believe that this results in the most interesting, vibrant, and engaging theatre.

We are NOT currently looking for:

· Proposals or incomplete scripts
· First drafts - as we do not have the capacity to accept resubmissions
· Plays that have already been produced
· Biographical plays about historical figures

Sometimes writers send their plays to us because they feel they are 'Ayckbourn-esque'. Since we are lucky enough to have the real Alan Ayckbourn working here at the SJT, we are unlikely to programme plays which are very similar to his work. If you think that your play falls into this category, then we suggest that it might be better suited to other theatres.

Our literary department is small, and we want to engage with the work of as many different writers as possible. For this reason, we can only accept one script submission per writer per year.

Please send us a synopsis and the first 20 pages of your script using this Script Submission form.

Unfortunately, we cannot read scripts unless this form is submitted. This is to help us keep track of all submissions in a streamlined, efficient way and therefore gives us more time to read more plays! We only accept scripts digitally, rather than paper copies, for eco-friendly reasons.

Once your synopsis and excerpt has been submitted, the following things will happen:

· You will receive an acknowledgement email

· Once evaluated, we will either contact you to submit your full script or if we are not able to take your play further, we will let you know. Unfortunately, we are not able to give specific feedback or enter into any correspondence about your play. This is due to the large number of script submissions and our limited resources.

· From this point your full script will be sent to members of our reading panel. If your script is subsequently recommended by the reading panel, it will then be passed onto the senior artistic team.

The large volume of submissions means that this process can take up to 6 months. During this time please do not make contact, as we may not be able to answer you.

If we do want to take your play further, we may invite you to participate in one of the following ways:

· Second Stage – an SJT showcase of extracts of new work, from local playwrights and plays which have been submitted to the literary department, from national and international writers

· Play Reading event – a script in hand rehearsed reading of your play, at the SJT

· Further discussions about a possible full production of your script, or discussions about commissioning/seed-commissioning a new play from you


The SJT commissioning opportunities include:

· Productions for our youth theatre group

· Productions for our OutReach department

· Productions in the McCarthy theatre

· Productions in The Round


If you feel your play is not ready for full production or that you want to gain more writing experience, we offer a writing course via our OutReach Department.

This course culminates in First Draft - a public showcase of new writing from the participants, at the SJT. Writers from this course often then go on to have a play selected for Second Stage.
