MITF Seeks Science-Based Projects

web site

NOTE: the $30 application fee is waived for NYCPlaywrights - mention you saw this notice on this NYCPlaywrights web site and you will not pay a submission fee.

The Midtown International Theatre Festival (MITF) is seeking science-based projects for the 2014 Festival. By "science-based" we mean plays derived from the history, sociology, politics, and other human implications of science.

I studied chemistry and math in college and barely missed going in that direction before taking a hard left turn into the humanities. Actually, I consider the study of science to be one of the humanities -- where would our culture be without Galileo? (For that matter, Brecht's oeuvre would be incomplete without GALILEO.) And  America is setting forth on a dangerous path of downplaying the role of science in education. So I'm pleased to extend our scope to include this under-covered subject matter. (And you could make a plausible argument that it's easier to get public support for projects of this nature.)

The MITF is a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) theatre festival now in its 15th year. We produce it in Midtown Manhattan, for the last 11 years in the Theatre Building, 312 W. 36th St., which contains 5 theatres.  There are 3 ways to enter the Festival: as a Short Subject (30 - 60 min.); as a full-length (60 - 90 min.; up to 120 min. for musicals); and in the Commercial Division, a select repertory for plays with commercial ambitions and desirous of a better schedule and more setup time. We encourage science-based plays to enter in any category.

For more information about the MITF, please see our Web site at www.midtownFestival.org. The Festival Manual answers every question you could imagine, and more! NOTE: The $30 application fee is waived for members of TRU and for NYCPlaywrights.

Dates are July 14 - Aug. 10.

Thanks,

John Chatterton

MITF executive producer
