FringeReview is a UK-based online publication with the aim of bringing coverage to the underserved fringes of the theatre. Begun in 2006 at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, we quickly spread across the UK before going international. 

This year marks our first year in the US and we are looking to take on reviewers for the New York International Fringe Festival

You will have experience thinking and writing in an evaluative way in response to live performance, as well as a background, which supports this role. Such backgrounds may include a formal education in theatre or performance, considerable experience working within the industry, a proven track record as a theatre-goer with evidence of reflection (such as a consistent blog or journal of responses).

We will provide opportunities for you to experience and respond to theatre, as well as opportunities to increase your published writing portfolio through a recognized critical entity. In addition, we offer constructive criticism via our editorial team to help you develop (where appropriate) as a writer.

Fourth Wall Review seeks works of any length, genre and topic for the first issues

Fourth Wall Review is a publishing venture dedicated to playwriting and playwrights. We are currently accepting  submissions for our Summer/Fall issue with with an August 1st deadline.

The Fourth Wall Review is a print and online journal dedicated to publishing quality dramatic writing, along with interviews and essays relating to the craft of dramatic writing. The Fourth Wall will publish online bi-monthly and triannually in print. We are currently accepting submissions for the Summer/Fall 2014 online issue and the Winter 2014 print  issue.  We are  welcoming works of any length, genre and topic for the first issues. Submissions must be original and previously unpublished works.

We do not require a specific script format at this time. However, writers please adhere to generally agreed upon formatting rules such as character names being placed center - or somewhat center - of the page above the dialogue, etc. Please submit scripts as a Word or PDF file only.

Athena Project seeks plays

Athena Project is proud to announce the call for submissions for its Plays In Progress Series (PIP Series). This series will take place in Denver at The Aurora Fox Studio Theater over the course of 3 weekends, March 20-April 5, 2015, as part of a larger arts festival celebrating women artists, including the yet-to-be named world premiere, winner of this year’s PIP Series. Four new plays will be selected based on a blind submission process and given a dramaturg, director, designers, cast and workshop presentation during the festival. One play from the 2015 PIP Series will win a full production to be produced in March of 2016, based on a combination of audience vote and board input.

Scripts are being accepted online from now until midnight, July 31, 2014.

Submission Guidelines are as follows:

1. Playwright must be female and may only submit ONE full-length script.

2. The play must not ever have had a fully mounted production. Prior workshop presentations are permissible but the script must be a new version since the time of the workshop.

3. Submission must include:

--Full copy of script (without playwright contact info*)

--Character breakdown (without playwright contact info*)

--Short synopsis of script (300 word limit, without playwright contact info*)

--Resume

--Cover letter addressing what the playwright would like to accomplish with the workshop presentation and how she heard about the call for submissions

*Contact info must be listed ONLY on resume and cover letter, not on script or any other documents (submissions will be read blind). All documents should include the Title of the Play, but no playwright contact information.

4. Plays submitted without all supporting materials included will be disqualified.

5. We recommend the playwright be able to travel to the area for rehearsals as needed if selected (or may Skype in). Attendance at least one workshop production performance during the festival at the playwright's own expense is mandatory. We will select 4 playwrights to participate in the PIP Series and hope to strike a balance between local and national work. Exact rehearsal and performance schedules will be worked out with the director, dramaturg, and playwright after all plays are selected.

Script Submissions for the 4th Annual New Play-Reading Festival

The New Play-Reading Festival is a wonderful opportunity for artists to have their unpublished works presented before an audience, in a play-reading scenario, by a cast consisting of both professional and amateur actors on two separate occasions during our 2014/2015 season. This project is open to any unpublished and unproduced Theater for Young Audiences (TYA) scripts.

Four scripts will be chosen to be featured in this festival. The initial play readings will take place November 7th through the 9th. The second set of readings will take place February 27th through March 1st. After each reading, there will be a dialogue among the audience, performers and playwright. After the 2nd round of readings, one of the four scripts will then be selected to be presented as a fully mounted production in The Growing Stage’s 2015/2016 Season!

The three plays that were selected in the past festivals are With Two Wings by Anne Negri, The Secret Life of Hubie Hartzel by Susan Rowan Masters and next March, The Growing Stage will be presenting the world premiere professional production of And Then Came Tango by Emily Freeman.

The Growing Stage is committed to creating and presenting professional theatre for young people and their families and to provide them with the unique and affordable opportunity to share a fun, culturally significant moment in an intimate and special venue, The Historic Palace Theatre. Young people are also given the opportunity to grow as performers by working alongside professional actors as part of the theatre learning experience. 

Shows usually require a minimum of 4 characters/performers; there is no maximum, provided that if necessary, doubling is OK with the playwright.

SoYoCo is looking for featured artists

SoYoCo is a networking and theatre company for the arts. Our mission is to produce new works that focus on the evocation of escapism, conversation, heightened emotion and perceptions, while creating a healthy social environment conducive to networking for the artists and the creative contributors. These networking environments will be held monthly where the goal of a growing sponsorship program will act as a contributor to selected and like minded companies and organizations.

SoYoCo is looking for featured artists for their upcoming networking event on Monday August 4 from 7pm-10pm at Irish Exit.

We are looking for new works. These works can be anything from a play reading to a musical performance. Performance should be a minimum of 10 minutes no longer then 30 minutes.

You are reasonable with organizing your performers and rehearsals. You will need to provide SoYoCo with performers, writer, director headshot and bio.

If you bring 20 people or more you will get a cut of the bar proceeds. If you are unable to bring 20 people you will get the proceeds of the raffle either way.

SoYoCo will provide the performance location, drink specials, raffle prize, social media advertisement.

2014 Admissions Procedural Changes:
•The admissions window opens on July 1 at 10am (EST) and closes on July 29 at 5pm (EST).
•Upload a stand-alone Title Page for each play with your full name and contact information.

COLLAB staged reading series

COLLAB, Vertigo’s own staged reading series, is a four-week workshop that connects artists from various creative communities to promote collaboration in the development of original work. Workshops culminate in a free, public presentation.

Meet the creative teams from last year’s COLLAB.

This year, Vertigo Theater Company and co-curator Emily Simoness will select original, short pieces to workshop beginning in September, with performances scheduled for early October at BAM. For submission info, visit the online application. Submissions are due no later than Friday, August 1.

$10,000 Shakespeare’s Sister Fellowship

In addition to a $10,000 prize, the Shakespeare's Sister Fellowship includes a Hedgebrook residency on Whidbey Island, a fellowship position at the A Room of Her Own Foundation Retreat at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, and a project residency with the Lark Play Development Center in New York City. The fellowship will take place over the course of one year, throughout which the playwright will be mentored by the fellowship's creator, renowned playwright and actor Ellen McLaughlin. 

Applicants must be able to commit wholeheartedly to each stage of the fellowship, entailing four weeks of dedicated time over the course of the year, and must be willing to write an entirely new play. 

– All women who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible to apply. 

– In the first round, applicants will submit 30 pages of a play. 

– Applicants who make it to the second round will be invited to submit the same play in its entirety.

The Overtime Theatre is seeking play submissions for our 2015 season. Devoted to original work, we are particularly interested in new plays that are innovative in form and bold and moving in content. San Antonio’s “Theater for thePeople” — the Current readers’ favorite theater for five years in a row — creates a wide range of plays, from scrappy nerdcore to weird fringe, from heartwarming to hilarious, and has a loyal following.

Located near the blossoming Pearl Brewery complex at 1203 Camden Street, we are at the heart of the city’s most exciting arts district, right next to the San Antonio Museum of Art, the Museum Reach of the Riverwalk, and the South Broadway renaissance.

We are seeking original experimental and devised work, film and novel adaptations, translations and adaptations of classics, musicals, genre parodies, political pieces, community-based plays, science-fiction and superhero epic adventures, broad comedy, gritty realism, and especially that which we haven’t seen and can’t be categorized. We are looking for unique and imaginative local and national voices, visions, characters, and worlds that make the most effective use of the nature of live theatrical events, although they may (and are encouraged to) engage other media.

In all the plays we select, we are looking for work charged with a sense of now, pieces that wake the audience up to the present moment.

*Because all of the work at the Overtime is indeed created “overtime,” artists receive compensation through our “love bucket”–audience donations split with the cast and crew. To be honest, it isn’t a lot, but that has never stopped us from surviving and thriving as a truly unique independent theater.

The Second Annual Unfringed Festival will bring bold and daring new works to The Secret Theatre of Long Island City, Queens – named “One of NYC’S best theater spots” by Time Out.

PARTICIPATION:

Unfringed seeks new and exciting works that challenge audiences, facilitating lively discussion and interaction between artists and viewers. Talk to us in your cover letter. Tell us why you want to be a part of Unfringed, and how your work will benefit from being involved.

APPLICATIONS:
Applications will be accepted electronically until August 8th, 2014. There is no application fee.

Please submit only complete application. If application is incomplete, it will not be considered. Additional support materials may be added to your application before the deadline, but not after. 

Due to the number of applicants and the size of our staff, please DO NOT contact us to see if your application has been received and/or is complete, you will get an emailed response confirming your submission. If you are submitting more than one show, each show must have its own application, support materials, and application fee.

ACCEPTANCE:

All applicants will receive acceptance status notification (accepted, declined, alternated) via email on or around within three days of the close of submissions. At this time, if you are accepted to the festival, you will receive further instructions of information (as an online form) we will need from you or your company. This online form must be filled out immediately or before our acceptance deadline, which is generally on or about August 16th, 2014, and accompanied by a non-refundable $250.00 participation fee, which can be paid online.

Your show may also be selected as an alternate. Selected alternates may be offered a participant's slot if any offers are not taken up.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

If your show is accepted to the festival, you are given a slot in which to produce your show. We are NOT producing your show, we are merely presenting it. You or your producing organization must hire your own cast, crew, and staff, secure your own rights, and run your own rehearsals, etc.

SCHEDULING:

All shows will be presented in one venue on several dates throughout the duration of the festival. Most shows will receive approximately four performances over the course of the entire festival. Performances will be between 4pm and Midnight on weekdays, and between Noon and Midnight on weekends. There is only a 30 minute change-over time between shows. Your curtain time will vary from day to day in order to that ensure all shows receive an equal amount of prime performance times. Keep in mind that when you are striking or setting up your show, another show is also striking or setting up. Keep aspects of your production minimal, please! Please note that very limited storage is available – we want you to have a great show but discourage large bulky set pieces. All set pieces must be removable and not permanent.

BOX OFFICE and TICKETING:

Unfringed handles all aspects of ticketing and box office. Full priced tickets are $15 in advance, and $18 at the door. 

COMPENSATION TO COMPANIES:

After the first $175 received at the box office (to cover Secret Theatre operating costs) there will be a 50/50 split between your company and The Secret Theatre. There will be a minimum of 50-99 seats, ticket prices will be $15 so after recouping the initial $175 the potential if all 50 seats are sold is for your company to make $287.50 if all tickets are sold at the advanced price of $15.

We also offer a minimum of 10 hours free rehearsal at The Secret Theatre - a value of at least $200 subject to availability; rehearsal times offered are usually non peak times and daytimes. All other rehearsals at The Secret or our affiliated locations will be $10 peak times.

TECHNICAL / PRODUCTION:

You will need to keep the technical requirements of your show very simple. The venue is equipped with basic lighting and sound equipment. Storage space is minimal. Since the space is shared with all shows in that venue you must take props, set pieces and costumes away with you after each performance. Each company will have only one cue to cue technical rehearsal in the venue. The Secret Theatre provides a board op/Stage Manager and  Box Office staff.  Each company will be given one tech/dress rehearsal.   You may request one special but lights are generally set in a typical house plot with a warm and cold wash.

PUBLICITY:

Unfringed will publicize the festival and coordinate overall press relations. You will be asked to submit publicity photos and PR materials so that we can send complete press packages to print and broadcast media. You are welcome to publicize your own show through your own press releases, mailers, handbills, busking and/or posters. The more you promote your show, the larger your potential audience.

EXCLUSIVITY:

If you are accepted to Unfringed, part of our agreement prohibits the performance of your show anywhere in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut area anytime during 6 months before and 3 months after the performances at The Secret Theatre. This is primarily due to the fact that we depend upon our small portion of your box office income in order to pay for your participation in the festival. Performances elsewhere within our audience area greatly impact ticket sales to Unfringed. Please keep this restriction in mind when accepting other invitations to perform your show during these months, particularly before you have received acceptance status notification from Unfringed.

OUT-OF-AREA PARTICIPANTS:
Out-of-area participants, like locals, are responsible for all aspects of production and additional publicity for their show, as well as travel expenses, securing working visas (where required), and accommodations. Unfringed cannot help with housing for a participating company.

Call for Submissions for the third BUA Takes 10: LGBT Short Stories evening of ten-minute plays.  BUA Takes 10 will run three weekends from March 27-April 11, 2015 at Buffalo United Artists at Alleyway Theatre, 672 Main Street, Buffalo, NY 14202.

    

Submission Guidelines: 

*All plays must have an LGBT theme that is central to the play’s premise. (This means that changing pronouns on another play probably won’t work.)

*Playwrights may submit one or two plays, but if you submit two, please do so in separate emails.

*Please don’t resubmit plays that were submitted previous years.  You think we don’t remember, but elephants got nothing on us.

*All plays must be no longer than ten minutes, which may actually mean fewer than ten pages. If you’re not sure, please read it aloud.  No exceptions, no matter how brilliant the extra minutes may be. We mean it.

*All plays must have minimal set requirements. Plays chosen will receive full productions at BUA’s black box theater, but with ten plays being performed, there is no time for elaborate set changes. 

*Please email LGBT ten-minute plays with minimal set requirements to buasubmissions@gmail.com in standard format in Word or PDF. 

*Email subject line should have your name and title of your play, e.g. MARY BROWN/MY AWESOME GAY PLAY. 

*Body of email should contain contact information (including email and phone) and the play’s production history ONLY. You don’t have to write a cover letter, so please don’t. Anything other than the requested information is only going to give us a bad first impression (i.e. you don’t follow rules).

*Submissions that do not adhere to these guidelines will not be considered.

 The Deadline:

Submissions must be received by October 31, 2014. We prefer earlier to later, as we read and cull as the submissions come in.

You will receive a confirmation email when we receive your play. Finalists will be notified by email by January 15, 2015, and the selected playwrights will be announced on Official Playwrights of Facebook. We are sorry we cannot respond to each individual playwright. 

  

The Producer:

Buffalo United Artists will provide directors, actors, designers, and technical crew for the run of the show.  If necessary, directors will contact playwrights at the start of or during the rehearsal process.  For more information about Buffalo United Artists, please visit our Web site: http://www.buffalobua.org. The Production:

2014 ONE ACT NEW PLAY COMPETITION

The Georgia Theatre Conference, the official theatre organization for the state of Georgia, is now taking submissions for its annual One Act New Play Competition. The competition is open writers inside and outside of Georgia. The Competition is hosted by the Professional Division of GTC. The winning play will receive a $250.00 prize and will also be performed as a staged reading at the Georgia Theatre Conference convention held in Columbus, GA, October 9-11, 2014.

Guidelines are listed below:

Entries will be accepted between March 1, 2014 and July, 2014.

One submission per playwright only. 

Play submissions must be one act in length. Plays should be approximately 50 pages in length, with a running-time between 30 minutes and one hour, and limited to 10 or fewer characters.

Full length scripts, children’s plays, 10 Minute plays, and musicals are not accepted.

Plays must be unproduced (no professional productions) and unpublished. Plays that have gone through readings and workshops are acceptable.


Plays must be submitted by email attachment in Microsoft Word or PDF format:


Text in 11-12 point type and in plain font (e.g. Times New Roman)


Script must include page numbers at the bottom of each page

The author’s name should not appear anywhere in the script

Do not include resumes, playwright biographies, or history of the play

EST/Youngblood is currently accepting applications for membership beginning in the 2014-2015 season. Applications are open to New York City resident playwrights under 30 years old.

Membership includes attendance at all weekly meetings, monthly (or more frequent) performances, readings and retreats. There is no set term of membership, and members often stay through the season that includes their 30th birthday.

YouthPLAYS seeks work for young audiences

While we're always looking for a wide variety of great new plays and musicals for young actors and audiences, play publisher YouthPLAYS is particularly seeking awesome 30-35 minute one-acts for high school and middle school competition and festival use. Any genre, but flexible to large cast sizes and lots of female roles preferred. 

All roles don't have to be teen characters (though it's super cool if they are), but we do prefer that there be at least a number of substantial age-appropriate roles for teen actors. For submission guidelines, go here:

WHAT IS THE UMASS NEW PLAY LAB?
The Play Lab is a UMass Department of Theater mainstage production, running from March 23 – April 4, 2015. Two playwrights will be chosen for concurrent 10-day residencies during this period. These residencies are structured around a series of public staged readings directed and dramaturged by UMass graduate students and performed by undergraduate actors. The 10-day workshop term allows time for exploration in rehearsal and the generation of new material.

WHAT IS THE UMASS NEW PLAY LAB’S MISSION?
Our mission is to develop two exceptional new plays per year in cooperation with visionary playwrights. The Play Lab, is, in essence, a writer's playground: a stimulating and constructive artistic environment founded on three guiding principles of engagement, collaboration, and discovery. The UMass Amherst Department of Theater's commitment to new play development is internationally recognized, from our groundbreaking work with New WORLD Theater to our recent collaborations with artists like Will Power, Marcus Gardley, and Constance Congdon. We approach new play development with rigor, focus, and sensitivity—and we're seeking playwrights who are as passionate about this process as we are.

DOES THE UMASS NEW PLAY LAB PROVIDE FINANCIAL SUPPORT?
Yes. We offer a $750 honorarium per playwright. Accommodations will be provided. Playwrights are responsible for booking their own travel arrangements, and will be reimbursed for a portion of the cost.

WHAT KINDS OF PLAYS CAN I SUBMIT?
Plays must be full-length. Musicals are not accepted. Submissions may have had a previous reading, workshop, or production; as a rule, though, the Play Lab exists to develop relatively new work, so unproduced material will be given priority in our selection. The UMass New Play Lab seeks to develop plays that tell compelling stories about our world in bold and innovative ways. We encourage submissions from a broad spectrum of writers, from emerging to widely produced, and are particularly interested in works by underrepresented voices in American theater (e.g. women, LGBTQ, and playwrights of color).

HOW DO I SUBMIT MY PLAY(S)?
Submit manuscripts to umassplaylab@gmail.com. All documents must be submitted in .pdf format; plays formatted otherwise will be disqualified. Please include a concise playwright’s bio and a short (max. 50 word) summary of how you think your play might benefit from a developmental reading.
Submissions will be capped at 500 plays.

WHAT IS THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE?
The deadline is Friday, August 1, 2014.

DEATHSCRIBE seeks 10-minute plays

Each December, WildClaw produces the DEATHSCRIBE Festival of Horror Radio Plays. DEATHSCRIBE is an open submission, international festival and writing competition. Writers may submit up to two radio plays to DEATHSCRIBE in any given year.

Five scripts will be selected from all submissions. After being selected, there will be an opportunity for the authors to refine and revise these scripts (if deemed necessary) in collaboration with WildClaw Theatre Company. There will be a “Best of the Fest” award, with the winner chosen by a celebrity panel of judges on the night of performance to receive the coveted Bloody Axe Award.

All submissions must be made electronically; please make sure your script is formatted correctly according to the guidelines (see below) and submit your script as an attachment to deathscribe2014@gmail.com. Please include the title of your play in the subject line.

• Scripts must be no more than TEN MINUTES in length.

• Writers may submit up to two (2) scripts for Deathscribe consideration in any year.

• PDF format is strongly preferred. If PDF is not possible, then only MS Word please. All scripts must have a title page with all contact information, but no identifying information should appear anywhere else in the document. Submissions must be in a standard font and no less than 12 point.

• NO SCREENPLAYS. SCREENPLAYS WILL BE DISCARDED. WE KNOW THEM WHEN WE SEE THEM. (Nothing against screenplays. But this is a radio play festival.)

• DO NOT submit full-length plays for consideration in Deathscribe. They will be discarded. If you wish to submit a full-length horror play to WildClaw, see our general submission guidelines.

Plays for young audiences wanted

Plays should be intended for young audiences kindergarten through high school (no play is expected to appeal to all ages simultaneously). The 2015 Write Now competition encourages submissions for all age groups. Playwrights must suggest the appropriate age category on the official entry form.
Scripts must not be committed to publication at the time of submission. Commissioned works that are not in development are eligible.
Scripts previously produced in an educational or vocational setting are eligible, if playwrights are eager to pursue development of the script.
Scripts previously produced professionally are NOT eligible. (i.e., productions in which the director and actors have been paid).

If the play is an adaptation or dramatization, written proof must be provided that the original work is in public domain or permission of the holder of the copyright has been granted.

Musicals will not be accepted for the 2015 contest.
While there is no required length, short plays (e.g. 10 minute plays) have historically proven less competitive unless there is clear intent to develop the script into a full-length play.

Only ONE submission per playwright will be accepted.
Playwrights must be citizens or current residents of the United States.
Playwrights give permission for their work or portions of it to be read at the Write Now convening and to be archived in the Child Drama Collection, Hayden Library, at Arizona State University.
Finalist playwrights are expected to be in residence in Indianapolis throughout the workshop and Write Now convening.

Any future production or publication of a finalist play must give the following credit:

Now Accepting Submissions for Play Group 2015

All emerging playwrights are eligible to apply. New members join for two-year residencies beginning in January of 2015. In selecting new members, we will take into account the strength of the submitted play, what the writer stands to gain from membership at this point in his or her career, and the overall balance of voices and styles within the group. Women and writers of color are encouraged to apply.

The application is available here. Applications require a full-length play, a playwriting resume and a personal statement. All attachments must be saved as PDFs.

ABOUT PLAY GROUP
This vibrant and eclectic group of emerging playwrights gathers twice a month at Ars Nova to share new work and get feedback. The group offers members the chance to develop their plays with peer support, form collaborative relationships and build a strong sense of community within Ars Nova. In addition, members receive dramaturgical support and artistic matchmaking advice from the Ars Nova artistic staff and development opportunities through public readings and workshops.
