We are seeking 10-minute plays for our upcoming season.

Submission indicates you have read, understand and consent to the rules and guidelines.
Failure to comply will result in disqualification.

• Submitting author must be an African-American/Black playwright and the sole owner of the copyrighted work.
• Submission form must be completed before emailing your play.
• Play must not be previously produced.

• “Produced” - Your play was marketed for production date(s) by either you (its playwright) or a theatre company and was performed before an audience who purchased tickets to see the event. *Staged readings are not considered productions. If your play has only had public or private readings but has not been produced as a full-scale stage performance, you are permitted to submit the play.

• Play must not be published.

• “Published” - Your play is an officially published work and commands royalties from the producing theater each time it is performed.

• Play must not exceed 8-10 minutes.

• Plays that exceed this time frame will be disqualified.

• Play must be submitted in pdf format.
• Play should accommodate a “bare-stage” set requiring only minor accommodations of removable stage props and require basic lighting and sound cues.
• No more than three (3) submissions per playwright are accepted.
• The playwright may choose any theme or subject matter they desire.
• Play must not be a musical.
• Play must not be written for children or youth.
• Play must not be a re-submission from previous Fade To Black festival seasons.
• Play must not be considered a translation or adaptation.
• You must be at least 18 years of age to submit.

REMEMBER!

• There is no submission fee.
• Selected playwrights will receive an honorarium of $100.00.
• Selected playwrights will have their play produced in front of a live audience.
• Submissions open February 1.
• Submission deadline is April 1.
• Playwrights will be announced no later than May 1.

The Dr. Floyd Gaffney Playwriting Competition 2018

The UC San Diego’s Department of Theatre and Dance seeks from all enrolled undergraduate students submissions of previously unproduced, unpublished scripts highlighting the African-American experience in contemporary or historical terms. Adaptations from books and other forms are not allowed.

Prize:

A $1000 honorarium will be awarded to the winning playwright.

A staged reading of the winning script on May 12th, 2018, in the Wagner New Play Festival attended by national theatre professionals.

Travel and housing cost to and from UC San Diego to be present for the performance.


Adjudication:

Finalists and the eventual winners will be selected by a team comprised of the faculty and staff of UCSD Department of Theatre and Dance and invited judges from other theatre facilities, the professional theatre, local media or the UCSD student body.

The decision of the team of adjudicators is final. The UCSD Department of Theatre and Dance reserves the right to select no winner.


Guidelines:

Scripts must be original, unpublished, unproduced and free of royalty and copyright restrictions. Plays which have staged readings are acceptable.

Scripts must be 50 pages or longer, typed. Manuscripts must be submitted electronically.

Scripts will be accepted beginning January 1st, 2018.

Deadline for entry Friday, April 13th, 2018. 

The winner will be announced by April 27th, 2018.

Please include with your submission your contact details (name, college email, address, and phone number), play title, number of characters, institutional affiliation, and a one-page story summary.

South Baldwin Community Theatre of Gulf Shores, Alabama is seeking submissions for the Fourth Annual End of The Road New Short Play Festival and Beach Party.  The End of the Road New Short Play Festival will be held July 13,14 and 15 2018 in beautiful Gulf Shores, Alabama.  It will consist of three staged readings of the eight winning ten minute plays.  There will be an additional slot reserved for a student (18 and under) play.  By submitting your play you are agreeing to participate in the production of the play which means that  attendance by the playwright is a requirement for winning scripts.  Plays may have had prior productions but may not have been published.  Plays should not exceed 10 minutes in length and should be appropriate for a family friendly theatre.

Thank you for your interest in the 9th Annual Festival of Shorts hosted by Edmonds Driftwood Players in residence at the Wade James Theater.

The Festival this year will be presented in four performances – Friday and Saturday, July 6 and 7 at 8pm; Saturday and Sunday, July 7 and 8 at 2pm. Please read through ALL of the instructions for submission. If a submission does not meet the criteria listed, we will return it so the playwright can fix and resubmit. Deadline for all submissions is Monday, April 2 at  5pm Pacific Standard Time. All short play submissions must be sent electronically to: shorts@edmondsdriftwoodplayers.org.

We are so excited to announce our theme for 2018, “Be Careful What You Wish For”. Sometimes the things we most desire can lead to horrible, hilarious and completely unexpected outcomes even when we get our “heart’s desire.” How will you incorporate this truth in your original short script? Make it amazing and maybe we’ll see you at our Festival in July!

In order to enter the festival, please DO the following:

• Submit an original, never before produced script for a play that will last no longer than 10 minutes with 6 characters or less, which can be staged with minimal sets, props, and costumes.
• Incorporate the theme of “Be Careful What You Wish For” into your story.
• Submit two separate documents:

• A single cover page with the title of your play and your full name, address, email address and phone number.
• The original short submission ‘Standard Stage Play Format’ with the script and title of the play ONLY. No identifying information about the playwright is to appear in this “blind” copy. All plays which fail to submit a blind copy of their play will be disqualified. The blind copy of the script preserves anonymity in our judging process.

• Submit your play by 5pm Pacific Standard Time on Monday, April 2, 2018.

In order to enter the festival, please DON’T do the following:

• Don’t submit a play with a single character. This means NO monologues, please
• Don’t submit a play that includes nudity, excessive bad language or could in any way be construed as a hard ‘R’ or ‘X’ rating.
• Don’t include excessive props or things like glitter or feathers that would be hard to clean up and delay transitions for our festival. Eight plays will be presented at each performance (4 plays before intermission, 4 plays after intermission). Please don’t make it hard for our production team to stage your show. We are looking for submissions that could be staged with a few acting blocks and some costumes.
• Don’t submit a play that has been produced on any stage, anywhere prior to Monday April 2, 2018. We will do a search for each play before notifying our 8 finalists. Any evidence that a play has been previously produced will result in disqualification of the script from our festival.

Open Space Arts is currently seeking submissions for their upcoming Summer Playwright's Festival. This year's theme is "Nightmares and Daydreams."

Plays must be:

- 10 to 15 minutes in length (about 8-13 pages)
- Suitable for an outdoor stage (no special lighting, effects, etc)
- Family friendly
- Inspired by the theme "Nightmares and Daydreams"

We give preference to plays that have roles for young people. Playwrights may submit up to two plays for consideration.

Seeing Between the Lines: The Dramaturg’s Perspective

The dramaturg’s job is to read between the lines and enhance a script with specificity and accuracy. This workshop will teach you to watch and read a play from the perspective of a dramaturg and see what you’ve been missing. By the end of this workshop, you will be equipped to see any production with a more discerning eye and able to bring dramaturgy into your work as a writer, actor, or director.

coLAB Arts is now accepting musician, writer, director, and actor applications for the fourth annual 48-Hour Musicals, scheduled for Sunday, April 29 at 7pm at Pino's Lounge (13 North 4th Avenue, Highland Park).

Musicians, writers, and directors are expected to be available Friday, April 27 at 5pm through the performance on Sunday.

13th Annual One Act Play Festival (OAPF)

Plays should be original, short one act plays; ideal length 10-15 minutes with 20-minute maximum.

Previously produced plays acceptable. Playwrights may submit up to three (3) plays maximum.
Seeking Short Plays: Comedic, absurd, dramatic, satirical, farcical, musical, etc. are all welcome for review. Works for actors of all ages (children thru seniors) and abilities are strongly encouraged.

Selected plays will be performed at
Theatre 82 in Cranston, Rhode Island
from July 26 – August 11, 2018 (more performance details below).

Deadline for Submission: All plays must be received by Saturday, April 14, 2018. 

Any plays received or postmarked past April 14th will not be accepted for review. Plays will be reviewed and judged by a panel of community directors and actors on their artistic and technical merits, and collectively decided on whether they are “selected for performance” or “not selected.” Total number of selected plays is TBD, based on factors including number of submissions, length of plays, etc.

Selected Plays for Performance: The One Act Play Festival (OAPF) Panel will finalize and announce all selected plays for performance by the end of May/early June.

Playwrights will receive notification only if their play(s) was/were selected for performance, and the selected plays will also be posted on the festival’s webpage. Playwrights will not be notified if their works were not accepted. By submitting works, playwrights agree to allow Artists’ Exchange to produce their play(s) in the festival for the public’s entertainment and benefit with no performance/royalty fees.

Selected Playwrights: Participation is volunteer; no stipends or monetary prizes are awarded to selected playwrights. All monies collected from ticket sales will benefit Artists’ Exchange/Gateways to Change, Inc. and the continuation of the OAPF for years to come. Selected playwrights will receive at least two (2) complimentary tickets and recognition in the playbill and festival webpage, including a personal bio and contact information (if provided). About the One Act Play Festival: Since 2006, Artists’ Exchange has hosted the One Act Play Festival for the entertainment and enjoyment of the Cranston community. Theatre Conspiracy Annual New Play Contest

Entry fee waived for members of The Dramatists Guild, but proof of membership is required.

Theatre Conspiracy is now accepting submissions for its Annual New Play Contest between December 2017 and March 2018. All works submitted will be read and judged by a panel of qualified theatre teachers, directors and performers. Work submitted to the contest must be a full length play with seven actors or less and have simple to moderate technical demands. Play having up to three previous productions are welcome. No musicals please, as we are a tone deaf theatre company.

First place winners receive $700 and a full production. However, it is our goal to produce more than one entry each year.

RENEGADE N.O.W. 2018

The Renegade Theatre Festival, held in Lansing, Michigan, is seeking new plays for our annual festival held in August. Going into its 13th year in the festival-rich Old Town district, Renegade is a free, completely volunteer festival that gives theaters and independent producer/writer/directors an opportunity to present works that they might not normally stage. This summer marks the ninth year of the festival featuring new, original works – Renegade N.O.W.!

We will be accepting plays in three separate categories. We will be accepting new, original works that meet the following guidelines:

New Plays #1:
Plays should be no longer than 60 minutes in length.
May have been produced as a staged reading or in workshop, but not as a fully produced production.
Can be any style/genre.

New Plays #2:
Plays written on the theme: AWKWARD ENCOUNTERS
Are not longer than 10 minutes in length.
Have a cast of no more than three characters.
May have been produced as a staged reading or in workshop, but not as a fully produced production.
Can be any style/genre.
Can be fully produced using minimal setting/props/costumes.

New Plays #3:
Plays written for a children’s audience.
Should be no longer than 30 minutes in length.
Have a cast of no more than four characters.

The deadline for new play submissions is April 30th, 2018. 

We will only be accepting 250 plays this year. Once that number of submissions has been reached, a notice will be posted on the festival website: www.renegadetheatrefestival.org

In previous years, the festival has included a variety of performances by local and mid-Michigan theatres and artists. This year, we are focusing all of our energies on new plays! The Basics

We are looking for new plays in heightened text with female protagonists.  We are considering plays for the following programs:

Fifth Annual Staged Reading Series - June 23 & July 14 - Two plays selected
Full length plays (90 minutes to 2.5 hours)
8 Actors max

Cocktails and Classics (Short Play Staged Reading Festival) - November 10 - Several plays selected
1, 3, 5, 10 and 30 minute plays considered
Should be a parody, homage, or in conversation with a classic piece of literature or art

Submissions close Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 11:59 PM EST.  Play selection will be announced by May 1, 2018.

Format
Plays should be in a font no smaller than 11 pt with 1" page margins all around.  Only scripts submitted as a PDF will be considered.  Please include name and contact information on the title page.  The file should be named "[Title of Play] [Author's Name].pdf," such as "A Winters Tale William Shakespeare.pdf"

Cover Letters should be placed in the body of the email to turntoflesh@gmail.com, and addressed to Artistic Director, Emily C. A. Snyder.  Please include the length of the play, any technical requirements (sound, lights, etc.), the number and breakdown of actors, and development history.  Since this is a development series, plays should be ready to be publicly performed, yet should not have received a world premiere already (unless this is a significant rewrite).  Please include a little bit about yourself and what draws you to the mission of TTF.  Please mention where you are based and whether you are capable of attending rehearsals and performance in New York City.

There is no submission fee.  Selected playwrights will receive a $50 stipend for full length plays, and $20 for short plays.

This award was created in 1997 to honor the late Aurand Harris (1915-1996) for his lifetime dedication to all aspects of professional theatre for young audiences.
A staged reading of the award-winning scripts, or of selected scenes from those scripts, may be given at the annual NETC convention in the fall or on another occasion.

RULES OF ENTRY
• The contest is open to all playwrights.
• The contest is for new full-length plays for young audiences. No musicals nor
plays targeted at adult audiences.

• Plays submitted to the contest must not have been...
1) previously published
2) submitted to NETC’s Gassner Playwriting Contest
3) previously produced by a professional or Equity company.


• Plays submitted which have had workshop productions or staged readings are eligible and encouraged.

• Plays submitted to this contest may have been submitted to another playwriting contest, and may have previously won a prize or an award in another contest. However, such plays must not have been published or professionally produced and must not be under option for publication or professional production.

• Playwrights may submit only one play to the contest in one year.

• a statement that the play will not have been published or professionally produced as of April 15, 2018, and that it is not under option for publication or professional production and will not be under such option as of April 15, 2018.

Athena Project - Plays in Progress Series

Athena Project--located in Denver, Colorado is proud to announce the call for submissions for its Plays In Progress Series (PIP Series). This Series will take place in Denver at a location to be determined over the course of approximately March-April 2019, as part of a larger arts festival celebrating the voices of women artists.

Three to four new plays will be selected based on a blind submission process and given a dramaturg, director, cast and workshop level production during the Festival. A table reading and/or concert reading may also be available. All plays from the PIP Series 2019 will be considered for the mainstage production in September of 2019, decided by a combination of a panel of judges and audience vote. Scripts are being accepted from March 3-April 15, 2018.

Submission Guidelines are as follows:

1. Playwright must be woman and may only submit ONE full-length script.

2. The play must not have ever had a fully mounted production. Prior workshop presentations are accepted, but the script must be a new version since the time of the workshop.

3. Submission must include:

a. Full copy of script (without playwright contact info*)
b. Character breakdown (without playwright contact info*)
c. Short synopsis of script (300 word limit, without playwright contact info*)
d. Resume
e. Cover letter addressing what the playwright would like to accomplish with the workshop presentation and how she heard about the call for submissions

4. Plays submitted without all supporting materials included will be disqualified.

5. We recommend the playwright be able to travel to the area for rehearsals as needed if selected, and for at least one workshop production performance at their own expense. We will select 3-4 playwrights to participate in the PIP Series and hope to strike a balance between local and national work. Exact rehearsal and performance schedules will be worked out with the director, dramaturg, and playwright after all plays are selected.

The P73 Playwriting Fellowship

This application must be submitted by 11:59 PM EST on April 1, 2018 to be considered for the 2019 development programs.

The P73 Playwriting Fellowship provides a year of comprehensive support to one early-career playwright who has not received a professional production in New York City (please see eligibility requirements below). Through this program, Page 73 provides artistic and financial resources to this writer as he or she develops one or more new plays of his or her choosing. The P73 Playwriting Fellow receives an unrestricted award of $10,000 and a development budget, managed by Page 73 and the Fellow over the course of the Fellowship year, up to an additional $10,000.
The Fellow is encouraged to think creatively about using Fellowship resources to meet concrete goals that might not otherwise be possible. These goals may include, but are not limited to, development of one or more new plays, assistance in building relationships within the New York City theater community, research, and/or travel. Please note that funds from the P73 Playwriting Fellowship do not cover full-scale productions, nor does Page 73 commit to producing the work of the Fellow. The Fellowship incorporates at least one public presentation by the Fellow. Page 73 also helps the Fellow identify and connect with collaborators, including directors, designers, actors and dramaturgs, for Fellowship projects.

The Fellow is associated with Page 73 for the calendar year, from January 1 to December 31. After being selected, he or she works with Page 73’s staff to develop a plan for the year and establish a timeline for the development work to be done on the new play or plays. The Fellow may also be invited to participate in the Page 73 Summer Residency and, if eligible, Interstate 73 (described below) during the Fellowship year.

If the Fellow is not a New York City resident, he or she must be prepared to travel to New York during the Fellowship year in order to fully engage in the opportunities that the Fellowship provides.

1. The applicant must be a US resident at the time of participation;

2. The applicant must have completed at least 2 full-length plays or at least 3 one-act plays;

3. The applicant must have made a commitment to playwriting as a professional goal;

4. The applicant must have never received a production of his/her work in New York City that was larger than an Actors' Equity Showcase Code presentation;

5. The applicant must not be enrolled in a full-time degree/certificate program at the time of participation.

Interstate 73 applicants:

Attendance at all Interstate 73 sessions is extremely important; please do not apply for Interstate 73 if you will be unable to attend group meetings in New York on a regular basis. Playwrights' stipends are tied to attendance. Priority is given to writers who are not involved in a similarly structured institutional writing group and who will be present in the New York City area for the calendar year.

We understand this application occurs well in advance of 2019 and appreciate that schedules and institutional affiliations change. If you are not sure about your involvement in other writers groups or your location for 2019, you are welcome to apply for Interstate 73 and update us accordingly regarding your eligibility.

Fellowship semi-finalists are announced in early fall, and finalists are notified later in the fall. The Fellow is selected in December of each year and announced in the new year, along with the finalists.

Individuals selected for Interstate 73 will be approached in the fall to assess availability and eligibility for the coming year. We understand that playwrights' schedules and/or locations may change over the course of the application process.

THE LESLIE SCALAPINO AWARD FOR INNOVATIVE WOMEN PERFORMANCE WRITERS

In memory of Leslie Scalapino, her extraordinary body of work, and her commitment to the community of experimental writing and performance.  Read about Leslie here. The Leslie Scalapino Award recognizes the importance of exploratory approaches and an innovative spirit in writing for performance.  Thus far the award has honored Joyelle McSweeney’s Dead Youth, or The Leaks, Khadijah Queen’s Non-Sequitur, and Brigid McLeer’s The Triumph of Crowds, as well as our wonderful finalists.

The Prize: The winner will receive a $2,500 cash prize, print publication of the winning text by Litmus Press, and a staged reading of the piece in New York this fall, by Fiona Templeton’s company The Relationship.  The award is biennial.

The Call:

Please read the guidelines carefully as the terms of the award have changed.

We are looking for a full-length work for live performance by a woman writer with an inquiring approach to language and content. The poetic practice of Leslie Scalapino was interdisciplinary, including photography, plays, performance, and collaboration with dance and music. We would like to honor this aspect of her work in the award.The Award for Innovative Women Playwrights intends to support new writing by women-identified writers.  The prize is open to international submissions in English.

While the principal focus for the award is on innovative writing for performance, competitive submissions may consider a range of approaches to innovation in performance, including but not limited to integrated experimentations with language, gesture, movement, sound, visual art / vision, site / location and/or activist practice. The writer should demonstrate some experience in the discipline, materials or medium involved.

Applicants should have had no more than 3 productions of their work, as the award is intended to open up opportunities, although it is not limited to emerging writers. Artists from other disciplines newly working in performance are welcomed. The submitted work should not have been previously published or produced, with no publication or production scheduled before December 2019. We do not define productions according to an Equity theatrical hierarchy, but as a professional realization of the work beyond a reading or work-in progress presentation.
The award will be biennial, but until further notice there will be no confirmed production attached to the award, although we will work towards this possibility. We will retain production rights until December 2019, at which point they will revert to the author.

1.  A 10-page excerpt from a completed work.
2.  Your CV.

All submissions should follow the following general instructions. Submissions that do not follow the following will be eliminated from consideration.

1. Submit the appropriate Google form for your submission found elsewhere on this site.

3. Title your submission with your family name and title of piece. For example, if John Smith's story is called "Happy Dog Day," the document should be sent as SmithHappyDogDay.pdf.

5. All submissions should be paginated.

6. All prose submissions should include an accurate word count. Play submissions do not need a word count but should use standard play format.

Playwrights’ Week, The Lark’s Open Access Program, seeks to provide development opportunities for new and diverse voices for the theater by identifying and advancing promising plays that reveal unheard and vital perspectives. This submissions program allows The Lark to serve a wide range of playwrights through a multistage selection process with an emphasis on inclusion and advocacy.  

Our support criteria emphasizes ambitious, fresh, playful, engaging, energizing, provocative, powerful, and theatrical work by writers with clear artistic goals who are open to a collaborative development process.

Writers selected for Playwrights’ Week are provided with ten hours of rehearsal and a public staged reading to address self-defined developmental goals for their plays, as well as opportunities to engage with fellow participants in a peer-based community of support and conversation.

A complete submission is composed of two parts:

• A completed application form.
• A full-length script, with your name or any identifying information removed as we are committed to an anonymous initial review.

2018 NATIONAL CALL FOR SCRIPTS Environ Justice

INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (“University”) is now accepting submissions for its Spring 2018 National Call for Scripts.

INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre is sponsored by the Counseling Center and co-sponsored by Illinois Theatre at the University of Illinois.

INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre addresses complex, timely and often difficult social issues that connect deeply to the university communities and beyond, through performances followed by post-performance audience dialogues. Recognizing the event of live theatre as a rare and non-trivial dynamic juncture in a social space occupied not only by people but also by possibility, INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre commits itself to the cultivation of this social space for rich civic dialogue vital to the wellness of community. With an eye on civic engagement and social justice, INNER VOICES concerns itself with where and how change might be made.

The 2018 Call for Script will explicitly focus on the theme of Social Justice as Environmental Justice. The possible topics might include such things as food deserts, environmental hazards, recycling, sustainable architecture, water and energy issues, and the impact of these on mental health and well being, etc. (hereafter, “Theme”)

This call for script is initiated by INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre, and supported by Student Sustainability Committee at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

An award will be given to those playwrights whose scripts comply with the guidelines and are selected. Decisions of the panelists shall be final.


We are looking for scripts in two categories:

A. Ten-Minute play: up to six will be selected, $700.00 will be awarded per selected winning script

B. Forty-Minute play: up to three will be selected, $1,500.00 will be awarded per selected winning script


Playwrights (hereafter, “Entrant(s)”) must be 18 years or older and residents of the United States.

Scripts must be submitted by no later than 11:59 pm on March 15, 2018. No late submissions will be accepted.

Script Submission Requirements.

A.  Entrants must complete the attached application along with his/her/their submission.  If there is more than one playwright for one submission, each playwright will need to complete the application.

B.  Each script must be original, unproduced, and not an adaptation or translation of an existing work and the submitted script must address the Theme. Addressing an issue does not necessarily mean bringing the issue to resolution. We value work that brings up the conditions of a social issue in a unique, complete and complex way.

C. Entrants must specify in the application whether the submission is for the Ten-Minute play or the Forty-Minute play. Ten-Minute plays should have 1 to 5 characters. Forty-Minute plays should have 3 to 8 characters.

D. For each Entrant, only one Forty-Minute play or two Ten-Minute plays or one of each is permitted.

E. While not a requirement, humor is welcome as is non-traditional utilization of theatrical form.

F. Each submission must be in Adobe Acrobat PDF form and hard copies will not be accepted.

G. Each submission must include the Entrant’s contact information, including, name title of the play, address, phone number, and email address. If there is more than one playwright as an Entrant for one submission, please identify all of the playwrights but designate one person person as the Entrant representative for purposes of contact information and any questions concerning the script.

Judging.  Submissions shall be judged by three to five University students and staff who have an interest and expertise in theatre and/or the Theme on the following criteria: meeting all of the administrative requirements in the submission guidelines, the feasibility of producing the script by INNER VOICES, the originality and compelling use of the theatrical form and structure of the script, and the capacity for original and compelling theatrical execution. By submitting your script, you give INNER VOICES the right to evaluate and compare your scripts against other scripts in order to choose the winning scripts. Up to six scripts will be selected as winning scripts for the Ten-Minute play and up to three scripts will be selected as winning scripts for the Forty-Minute play. The panelists decision on the winning scripts for each category shall be in their sole discretion and final.

Winning Script.   The winning script(s) for each category (the Ten-Minute play and the Forty-Minute play) will be used by INNER VOICES for the production and public performance of a play. However, the selection of a script does not guaranty its production by INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre. Should the play be brought to production, a best efforts attempt will be made to inform the winning Entrant of its performance dates. The winners shall be announced on May 1st, 2017.  The scripts that are not selected shall be destroyed by the University.

Note: All scripts will be read, however, we are unable to provide individual feedback on scripts.

Nylon Fusion Theatre Company is currently accepting submissions of new works for future projects.

2- The Political Play series (Full Length about 90 min) Note: Submissions do not have to be about Politics per se, but must be about  topics that are socially and/or culturally significant.

We are interested in writers residing in New York, as the team will be meeting frequently during script development. If you do not live in the New York area but would like us to consider your work, feel free to send in your sample script, as we would like to feature guest writers in the project as well.

Technological advances have always been a part of life from the wheel, loom, and engine to the computer, internet and now virtual reality.  Most of these we can say with certainty aided us in our lives and helped make the world a better place.  But with the increased reliance on (and use of) technology, have we lost a bit of what makes us human and binds us together?  For our 2018 season, we will focus on the human sensory experience in any and all interpretations and perspectives.  We look forward to your submissions.

​The Petaluma Radio Players, located 34 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Sonoma County wine country, is actively calling for submissions of 25-27 minute multi-character plays written for radio or stage, the latter for adaptation to radio. ​

We broadcast locally on kpca-fm (103.3) and simulcast on the web at kpca.fm and via our podcast hosted at petalumaradioplayers.com.

Our work is of the highest production value possible. Your work should rise to the level of other playwrights whose works we have produced including NY playwright William Ivor Fowkes ('THE NEXT MOVE'), VA playwright Phillip Ventrella ('STORY: A DETECTIVE STORY'), Bay Area playwright Steven Lubliner ('THE NOIR BEFORE CHRISTMAS') and NY playwright Christina Gorman ('JUST KNOTS'). If your submission is accepted, to adhere to our format, we may require you to take our pre-production notes and make slight adjustments to the script, particularly if the play was originally written for stage.

While each writer reserves copyright to his/her play, The Petaluma Radio Players reserve right to broadcast, simulcast, and podcast the writer's work an unlimited number of times. On those occasions where we are able to secure an Underwriter, we provide the writer a stipend, of $100-$500 depending upon total amount of Underwriter's contribution.

In your email cover letter, please disclose if your play is represented by an agent
and include the agent's name, agency name, and contact information. For PRP to consider
an agented play for production, agented plays, like all scripts we vet and approve, must adhere

Due to the overwhelming response we receive from NYCPlaywrights.com, please limit your submission to one (1) play every six months. The Petaluma Radio Players use a vetting process that guarantees that all submissions are read, thoroughly considered, and that all playwrights who reach out to us, hear back from us. WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR: Playwrights of all genders and plays of all genres are welcome.  Male characters are great, so long as they don’t overshadow/outnumber the female characters.

PUT ANOTHER WAY: IF YOUR SCRIPT DOESN’T PASS THE BECHDEL TEST, IT’S UNLIKELY TO BE A GOOD FIT FOR US.

Fights are a big part of what we do, so their inclusion in scripts is important to us – so long as they serve the story and the characters.  We see fights in our shows as similar to songs in a GOOD musical: words fail, so musical characters burst into song.  Words fail, so our characters resort to violence.

Finished but not polished is fine.  Likewise, one acts are fine if the intent is to expand them, through development, into full-lengths.  If you consider the piece complete as-is and aren’t interested in further development, please indicate that when you submit.

And of course the caveat – we typically work in small, black box theatres on limited budgets.  A piece with multiple, complex locations and/or more than 10 characters that can’t be easily doubled might not be the best fit for us.

Princess Grace Awards Playwriting Fellowship

We encourage emerging playwrights to apply at the beginning of their careers so that through the New Dramatists Fellowship, they can develop their work as well as benefit from being a part of a unique, diverse, dynamic community of professional playwrights. An applicant’s status as an emerging playwright is evaluated during the adjudication process.

One playwright will be selected to receive:
• A grant in the amount of $7,500
• A one-season (September – June) artistic residency at New Dramatists, Inc. in New York City (For Award recipients living outside of the New York metro area, your on-site residency can be adapted according to your schedule with reimbursement provided for transportation costs to/from New York)
• Inclusion of your script in New Dramatists’ library
• Advocacy for the recipient and their script to New York and National theatre communities for the duration of the fellowship
• Mentorship from a New Dramatists resident playwright for the duration of the fellowship
• Opportunity for winning play to be licensed and published by Samuel French, Inc.

Submission requirements:
• All candidates must be United States citizens or have permanent resident status.
• Eligible playwrights must not have had more than 3 public productions of their full-length plays mounted by a producing theatre.

Developmental readings and workshops, university productions, and self-productions are admissible.

You must submit one unpublished, full-length play (A full-length play is a single play that constitutes a full evening of theater. For example, a 90-minute intermissionless play is a full-length play.)
• There is no restriction on subject matter
• Co-written material will not be accepted
• No adaptations of previously published material

The Foundation is looking to identify and support original, authentic, unheard voices in the theater. The panel will consider the submitted play in terms of the originality of the storytelling, quality, and offering of new perspectives.

APPLICATION STEP-BY-STEP

Submission Window: February 15-March 15, 2018 6PM EDT

To begin your application, click on the “Begin Application” button. You will be asked to create a username and enter your email address. Once you have clicked “Submit,” you will receive an email with instructions on how to log in. From this point forward, you will be guided through a simple process collecting all of your admissions materials in seven easy steps:

1. Log in. You will be asked to confirm you are a US Citizen, or permanent resident.

2. Fill in your full name, address, and phone number.

3. Upload your playwriting resume.

4. Upload one full-length work (play or book of a musical) (The following files may be used: txt, pdf, doc, docx, rtf).

5. Upload your personal statement.

6. Should you wish to submit a letter of recommendation, enter the name and email of your reference. An email containing a link to upload their letter of recommendation will be sent directly to them.

7. Review your application, and click “Submit Your Application” to complete the process. You will receive an email confirming your application has been received.

You may save your application at any point and return to it later before submitting. Once the application window closes at 6:00 (EDT) p.m. on March 15, you may not alter your application in any way.

Call for Monologues: Illuminated Dresses

Deadline: March 17, 2018

We are seeking monologues about a transformation while putting on (or taking off) a dress. (“Dress” can be a uniform, costume, smock, etc.) This experience could be connected to a ritual, magic, an awakening, an everyday epiphany. A few questions to consider: Why this dress? Why now? (How) does the dress fit? How does the person feel in this dress? What does the person want to do in or to the dress? Are there regrets? Expectations? What doors might open or close?

Selected scripts will be pitched as a project for the upcoming Women's Theatre Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Submission guidelines:

• Submit one monologue up to to five minutes long. (Please time it by reading it aloud.) Each entry must be original, in English. Author must own copyright. Entry should be double-spaced, in Courier or Times New Roman 12-point font, using one-inch margins. 
• Include author’s name and contact information on the title page. 
• Put your last name and the word “monologue” in the subject line.

Scranton Fringe Festival 2018

The 2018 Scranton Fringe Festival is September 22nd - September 30th (main performances scheduled Thursday September 27th thru Sunday September 30th) Touring / out of town artists are NOT required to arrive the first few days.

Please read ALL of the info below before applying – even if you are Scranton Fringe alumni (welcome back) there have been MANY big changes! We are honing in this year to make the festival even better - so production slots will be more limited than previous years.
Please read carefully and be sure you understand the changes before filling out your information. These guidelines and application are part of your contract with Scranton Fringe.

Applications will be open February 21st  to March 30th at 5:00 pm (EST).

 ● We are looking for:  new takes on old works; newly created pieces; quirky, unusual, vibrant and creative theater; cabaret; dance; puppetry; magic; musicals; immersive theater; circus; solo shows; and children’s programming.

● We are NOT looking for:  anything shorter than 45 minutes, stage readings, music, or reprises of productions recently performed in the area.

Is Fringe right for your production?

We believe there's a place for everyone in Fringe and we welcome participation from anyone who wants to come play. But Fringe isn't the right place for every kind of production.

● All shows must fit either the standard (45-60 minute length) OR extended/feature (60-80 minute length) time limits.   These time limits include any curtain calls or audience discussions. Shows that run longer will be cut off by the house lights to maintain the schedule, without exceptions. PLEASE

NOTE: All shows require at least 45 minutes of  content  (it will not be permitted for a show to justify 45 minutes with intermissions/set changes/etc).

● No elaborate tech.  You must be able to load in and set up your show in  ten minutes , and you get the same ten minutes to strike after your show. Storage is available at ALL Scranton Fringe venues, but the exact amount varies. The “featured/extend length” productions have the potential for more advance tech (though fundamental Fringe principles still apply).

● You may bring in additional projection equipment to venues only with advance notice and permission.  We understand multi media / AV projection can be a creative element in your show, but help us help YOU by giving us as much notice as possible. Fringe reserves the right to not allow any special / outside tech in certain venues if advanced notice was not given.

● Promote! Promote! Promote!  All productions / shows within the festival are required to promote their own show using the Scranton Fringe festival logo (provided) on all marketing materials.

● Marketing Workshop.  Scranton Fringe will conduct a special marketing workshop (at least two sessions) in advance of the 2018 festival.  At least 1 delegate from every production must attend one of the sessions.  Skype attendance will be arranged for out-of-town artists.

● Stage Readings : Fringe loves work that is “in progress” - however for our mainstage performances we will not be considering any stage readings for 2018 (The free Teen Playwright Showcase being the only exception). Stage readings are not what our audiences are typically looking for. However, we are currently  considering  offering a “Playwright's Lab” during the 2018 Festival so writers can present their own stage readings as free performances. Contact us at  Info@ScrantonFringe.org  (Please note “stage readings” do not apply to poetry or prose readings wherein “Reading” the work live is the standard medium).
 Out of necessity, Fringe's production framework is rather specific. We don't want to discourage
 you from dreaming big, but there are some real limitations you'll have to take into account for
 your show:

 ● Children’s Theater:  In 2018 we are accepting application for our children’s programming , Early Stages  (formerly called FringeYOUTH), within the main application.   This is a curated series with slightly different aims/rules than the main festival, presented free to the public with funding from a Lackawanna County Arts & Culture grant. Please email info@scrantonfringe.org with any questions regarding Early Stages.

Please note that we will only accept one application per primary contact and/or one application per producing company. If accepted into the festival, this primary contact will be responsible for ensuring ALL members of their team get any updates from Fringe and comply with the contract.
While it is not prohibited for performers to participate in more than one Fringe production, Scranton Fringe can make no specific scheduling accommodations for actors to be in multiple shows.
The basics: Time and money

● Scranton Fringe Festival 2018 will take place  Saturday September 22nd  – Sunday
September 30t h . All shows should be prepared to perform anytime within the festival (as well as 1 tech rehearsal sometime between Friday September 21st –Tuesday September 25t  h ).

● Scranton Fringe does not charge any application fee – you are free to submit your most Fringe-worthy production without risking any funds!

● Each production receives  70%  of its box office receipts (paid by check / mailed 4-8 weeks following the festival).

● If selected, all productions are required to pay a production fee.  Production fee revenue will be utilized to help cover just part of the festivals many expenses (venue rental, tech, staffing, insurance, printing, general marketing, etc).

● Production fees vary depending on number of shows and size of venue . These fees directly fund the festival costs and help make the festival sustainable. Fringe will try to accommodate your choices as space/schedule allows & the specifics will be noted in each contract. The breakdown of fees is as follows:

● 2 performances small venue ($80)
● 2 performances medium venue ($120)
● 2 performances large venue ($160)
● 3 performances small venue ($120)
● 3 performances medium venue ($180)
● 3 performances large venue ($240)
● 2 Featured performances Large venue ($240)*
● 3 Featured performances Large venue ($360)*
*Please note in application if you want to be considered as a featured act
● Selected shows will be offered a contract (with venue/schedule)  by May 2018 . Production fees are due upon signing. Shows that fail to reply by the TBD deadline run the risk of their slot being offered to another applicant.
