The Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning, in conjunction with the Jamaica Performing Arts Center, is producing the second season of ‘Meet the Playwright’, which features playwrights’ new works in live stage and virtual performances. Each month, a playwright will have the opportunity to present their works within a limited time format); there will be a one-on-one interview with the curator/host, and a Q&A session with the audience. It is not a paid event, although audience registration will be necessary.

The play itself is slated to run 30 minutes in total length. The basic format: intro/chat with the playwright; the play performance, then the interview Q&A following the performance. It is the playwright’s choice if the cast will be included in the Q&A. The entire event is timed to run at least 45 minutes, but 60 minutes is the maximum time allotted.

Plays/manuscripts must be submitted via the Meet The Playwright Submittal portal, not directly to the theater or program curator. A play submission is not an automatic guarantee that it will be accepted for this program.

Manuscripts must have the following: Typed; 12-sized font: Arial, Times New Roman, or Courier. The title page must have the playwright’s contact information listed: name, phone number, and email address, as well as a total number of pages being submitted.

‘Meet The Playwright’ is for NEW works: any prior professional productions, i.e., paid, mountedperformances will be disqualified. Play excerpts will be allowed but must have a clear-cut beginning and end to the excerpt. JCAL is looking for NEW works, not excerpts from established plays (i.e., no clips from “Hamilton,” etc.) Due to the ‘short play’ designation, the total cast members cannot exceed more than 4 actors.

The ‘Meet The Playwright’ live stage presentation will run a new work on the last Monday of each month, commencing Monday, March 28th, then April 25th, May 23rd, and June 27th, 2022.

Performances will be live-streamed online.
