4th Annual Theatrical Spooktacular

Website

Deadline: October 8, 2021

Submit to TheatricalSpooktacular@gmail.com

  • We are looking for original short plays (or other theatrical pieces) that are 10 minutes or less.
  • This evening is being produced on Halloween and we encourage any submissions that may resonate thematically, whether they directly relate to Halloween or not.
  • While we will consider anything and everything, we especially want to see submissions that are either comedic or spooky, as this fits best with the tone of the evening.
  • Have something that isn't quite a play, but you think it fits? Send us a video link.
  • Because we are small and have limited tech, eash-to-produce pieces are more likely to be selected. We also recommend submitting plays with a smaller cast size.

  • The event will take place the afternoon of Sunday, October 31 in New York City. Exact time and location TBA.
  • Playwrights are encouraged to submit from anywhere and local playwrights may be as involved in the process as they would like.
  • We work to match plays that need them with directors and actors and help to coordinate rehearsal space.
  • This is an unpaid event, as we are not profiting from it.

RESERVE FREE TICKETS HERE

WED-SAT, OCT 13-16, 2021, 7 pm

@ THE TANK
312 W 36th St, New York, NY 10018

“WHATEVER YOU THINK IT IS —
IT’S SOMETHING ELSE."

October 13 -16 at 7pm

Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander welcomes you into the world of mystical theatre. Whatever you think it is, it's something else. Chuang Tzu said: "If there is existence, there must have been non-existence. And if there was a time when nothing existed, then there must have been a time before that – when even nothing did not exist." So why does Pizza Rat end up in the middle of everything? Well, at least getting a cameo.

*Please note that this performance will be presented at the Tank's in-person performance space at 312 W 36th St. All attendees and artists will be required to display proof of full covid vaccination before being admitted to the space, either by showing a vaccination record (vaccination card) at least two weeks out from the final dose of an approved vaccine, or by using New York's free Excelsior Pass service, available here. Patrons will also be required to wear masks while indoors at all times and for the time being, no food or beverage will be permitted to be consumed at the theater.
House size is extremely limited due to Covid-19 protocols

The Playwrights Realm Script Share Lottery

Website

Deadline: October 10, 2021 11:59 PM EDT

Script Share is an opportunity for aspiring writers to engage in a one hour discussion with a theatre professional about a particular script. These conversations are driven by what the writer is hoping to explore, and aim to provide an initial response, perspective, guidance around the craft of playwriting, and further questions, rather than critical feedback.

This program is free to the playwright and is intended for those who have more limited access to the industry, education, and script conversations.

Script Share participants will be selected via lottery for sessions in November and December. Lottery entries will be accepted through October 10th.

This program is intended to serve aspiring playwrights who do not have access to script conversations via other networks; for example, those who are new to playwriting and/or who may not have received opportunities through school or within the industry to develop their writing skills.

If you are selected for Script Share, you will need to have a script ready to share and discuss with a theater professional. Your script can be in any stage of drafting/development for these conversations, but it must be a full draft (a rough first draft is fine, but it cannot be only scenes or pages)!

Please Note: Script Share is not part of our Open Submissions programs. To have your full length play considered for our Fellowship or Scratchpad opportunities, please see our open submissions page.

The Process
  • Script Share participants are selected via lottery.
  • Selected playwrights are paired with a theater professional based on availability.
  • The assigned theater professional reads a script draft provided by the playwright and engages in a one-hour discussion with the playwright.
Script Share sessions will be held from November - December 2021. To enter the lottery, please fill out the Script Share application form online

This form will close on October 10th at 11:59pm Eastern.

Still have questions? E-mail us at: scriptshare@playwrightsrealm.org

Musicals Now Festival

web site

Deadline: September 30, 2021 midnight EDT

Piper Theatre Productions yearly festival, Musicals Now is seeking submissions. Our first season, Prospect Hill, featured a new queer musical by Mark A. Galinovsky and Lily Ali-Oschatz.

One show will be selected to be the outdoor main stage show of our July 2022 summer season. We are currently looking for submissions.

One musical will be selected for production.

$3000 honorarium will go to Songwriter / Book Writer team or individual.

One play will be selected for second placement and if the winning play cannot be performed then an offer to the second spot. An honorarium of $300 will be awarded to the second place winner.

What we’re looking for...

The Musicals Now Festival is about development. Selected artists are expected to be part of the team; meeting with director and designers, attending casting sessions and rehearsals, and speaking with our summer youth education members about what it takes to put on a new musical.

We’re looking for vital and urgent stories to share, artists with great passion, and characters that touch hearts and challenge minds.

We’re seeking storytellers & musicians from all walks of life, all racial backgrounds, identities, neurodiversities, sexualities, ages. This festival strives to be open to all and aims to represent Brooklyn.

We’re particularly keen on projects that use strong elements of Physical Theatre that adhere to Jerzy Grotowksi’s Ten Principals as taken from the book 'Towards a Poor Theatre' by Grotowski pages 211 - 218.

Things to Consider...

Productions are budgeted at $35,000 which includes: six performances, a small band, professional sound with lavaliers, a director, a three week rehearsal schedule, full technical and design support.

Piper has worked under Equity Showcase Contract in the past. We’re not sure if Equity Showcases will be permitted next year as they weren’t this year.

We’re an outdoor theatre company situated in Washington Park, Park Slope at the Old Stone House in front of a reconstructed Dutch Farmhouse which interprets the first Battle of the American Revolution. All performances are performed against its stone backdrop. Make your play revolutionary! It’s a unique and special place.

Design Realities at Piper…

Sets: We usually use levels and set pieces to tell our stories. Shows with heavy set requirements aren’t our bag. We want to put our funds into people first and don’t want to see a huge set put in a dumpster at the end of a season.

Lighting: Our shows start at 8:00 pm and it doesn’t get terribly dark till 9:00 pm, so lighting is rather limited for the first hour. Clean blackouts for the start of our plays can’t happen. Please consider transitions for that first hour.

Costumes: Solid 20 year Costume stock collection.

Sound: This is our biggest production cost. We use lavaliers / professional rented sound system. Our bands are usually no more than four or five musicians.

Before submitting your play, please carefully read the following eligibility, terms & conditions, and entry requirements. To be eligible plays must

Eligibility

1) Playwrights must be over the age of 18.

2) Be at least 90 minutes in length. And no more than 120 minutes. Our shows cannot go past 10:00 pm

Undiscovered Countries Infinite Festival

Website

Deadline: October 3, 2021
Submission Form

Submissions wanted: theater, music, puppetry, burlesque, dance, visual art, drag, you name it.

Undiscovered Countries is a New York City-based incubator of new and developing interdisciplinary art. Our Infinite Festival, founded in 2012, is an ongoing series of new and developing live art performing every other month.

The festival was founded to create a space for artists to show in-progress work without paying for production, and for audiences to see that work without paying for tickets. The goal of Undiscovered Countries is to foster a diverse, engaged community of artists by uplifting subversive and accessible work lacking conventional support.

For our 2021/2022 season, we will be doing bimonthly shows, split seasonally between in-person, outdoor events in NYC (September, November, May and July) and remote events hosted on Zoom (January and March). In light of the ongoing pandemic, in-person events might be moved to Zoom if cases rise significantly in New York City - we will follow CDC guidelines and be in frequent touch with artists if this needs to happen.

For these shows, you can pitch us a piece according to the guidelines, or volunteer to be part of an artistic "Bake Off", in which you create a piece picking elements from a list of "ingredients" we send you. All pieces should:

- last 3-10 minutes for in-person shows, 3-5 minutes for Zoom shows
- be fully realized for performance
- be new and/or in development
- be personally fun or fulfilling for you to make, and engaging and rewarding for an audience to watch

If you have any questions, please email us at undiscoveredcountriesfestival@gmail.com

Cape Cod Theater Project 2022

web site

Deadline: September 30, 2021

Applications for our 2022 Summer Season will be accepted September 1 through September 30, 2021.

Please use this form

Playwrights may send one play per season for consideration. The proposed play must still be in development and cannot have received a professional production, or a production that has been reviewed, prior to August 2022.

Please label the document using your first and last name as well as the play’s title. For example: janesmithplaytitle.pdf

As we rely on the generosity of our donors for housing, we usually limit our cast sizes to no more than six actors, though there have been exceptions. If your play is selected, your play will have a 20-25 hour developmental rehearsal process followed by 2 or 3 public readings with talkbacks.

As of November 1, 2011, we no longer review hard copies of scripts sent by mail.

The CCTP staff does not provide feedback on any submitted materials.

We look forward to reading your work. Again, here is the form.

Notification: March 2022
Award Period: September 6, 2022–May 26, 2023
Stipend: $75,000

The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers supports projects that draw on the research collections at The New York Public Library's Stephen A. Schwarzman Building (formerly the Humanities and Social Sciences Library). The Center looks for top-quality writing from academics as well as from creative writers and independent scholars. Visual artists whose projects require extensive use of Library collections are also encouraged to apply. The center seeks diversity in ethnicity, age, gender, field, and type of project. The Center aims to promote dynamic conversation about the humanities, social sciences, and scholarship at the highest level—within the Center, in public forums throughout the Library, and in the Fellows' published work.

Successful candidates for this Fellowship will need to work primarily at the Schwarzman Building rather than at other divisions of the Library. Applications from those working in languages other than English are welcome; however, the applicant must be conversant in English, and the application materials must be in English.

In order to avoid real or apparent conflicts of interest, the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers does not accept applications from New York Public Library staff members or their partners, or from people active on the Library’s Board of Trustees, Board Advisory Committees, or Library Council.

Please visit www.nypl.org/research-collections for detailed information about the collections of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street.

Fellows are required to work at the Cullman Center for the duration of the Fellowship term and may not accept other major professional obligations during the term. Some Fellows may have a few prior commitments but must limit research trips, attendance at scholarly meetings, and speaking engagements to short periods of time. Anyone who needs to be away for more than two days must notify the Center's Director or Deputy Director. The Library will pro-rate stipends for Fellows who spend too much time away from the Center. Fellowships will not be granted for academic projects to post-doctoral fellows or to applicants doing graduate-school dissertation research.

The Cullman Center will not accept dossier letters in place of new letters of recommendation.Completed applications and supporting materials—research proposal, Curriculum Vitae, letters of recommendation, and creative writing sample or art work sample—must be submitted by 5 p.m. EDT on September 24, 2021.
