2021 Fair Play Initiative Commission

Website

Deadline: September 27, 2021 11:59 PM

Theatre Lab, the professional resident company of Florida Atlantic University (FAU), is now accepting applications for The 2021 Fair Play Initiative: a commission and development program for LGBTQ+ plays and stories.

Through generous support from Our Fund Foundation, The 2021 Fair Play Initiative will provide a commission for a new full-length stage play highlighting the stories and issues of the LGBTQ+ community. The commissioned play will receive an in-person, week-long development process culminating in a publicly presented staged reading at Theatre Lab during the 2022 New Play Festival (January 7-9, 2022).

Theatre Lab invites interested playwrights to submit proposals for a commissioned work. Applications are open from September 14, 2021 through 11:59pm on September 27, 2021. Interested playwrights should email a bio (200 words or less), a brief summary of their proposed play (200 words or less), and 3 pages of sample work to theatrelab@fau.edu using the subject line: 2021 FPI STAGE APP.

After reviewing the applications, Theatre Lab will select one playwright to receive the commission no later than October 10, 2021. The playwright will receive an initial stipend of $2000 to begin work with an additional $2000 payable upon completion of the public reading. Selected candidates will demonstrate a lengthy history of supporting and engaging with the LGBTQ+ community and a deep understanding of the issues, stories, and concerns within the community.

The initial drafting process will be completed by November 20. The play will then be scheduled for a week-long development process, receiving no less than 15 hours of rehearsal before a reading for an audience. The playwright will be present for the entire rehearsal process, the reading, and take part in a post-show discussion with the audience about the play and the process. Theatre Lab will then retain “right of first refusal” for a world premiere production during or before the 2023-24 season.

Although not a requirement, Theatre Lab is particularly interested in stories based on or inspired by important events in LGBTQ history. Playwrights who reside in Florida - particularly those in South Florida - are strongly encouraged to submit. If you have any questions please email theatrelab@fau.edu. No phone calls please.
