Bindlestiff Studio - LOVE EDITION: TIME AFTER TIME seeks plays 25 minutes and under
Labels: 10-minute plays, one-act plays, short plays
Facebook page
Bindlestiff Studio, the nation's only theater dedicated to showcasing Filipino-American performing arts, is bringing back the LOVE and soliciting short plays to be staged in February 2017 for THE LOVE EDITION : TIME AFTER TIME.
The Love Edition has been one of our most celebrated shows, featuring short plays about Love, Heartache, and the Weirdness in between.
This year’s theme, Time After Time, will spotlight melodramas through the ages. Tales of the star-crossed and lovelorn have captivated generations of audiences across the world through soap operas, teleseryes, telenovelas, Korean dramas and the like. While the call is open to diverse and unique interpretations of love stories, we encourage writers to submit plays that embrace/celebrate/critique/reinvent the emotional spectacle of the melodrama genre.
We will be accepting electronic submissions until
12AM (PST) OCTOBER 7TH, 2016. Bindlestiff Studio does not charge reader's fees. Selected playwrights will receive a minimum of $50 and comp reservations for the run of the show.
To have your script considered for production, your script must follow the Love Edition submission guidelines:
1) Written in stage play format
2) 5-20 pages / 25 minutes or under. 5 powerful pages can impress us just as much (and probably more so) than 20 so-so pages.
2) Written about Love, Heartache, and the Weirdness in between.
4) Formatted as PDF, DOC, or DOCX. Include your contact info (Name, Email, and Phone).
5) Attach and email script to TheLoveEdition@gmail.com with “SCRIPT SUBMISSION” in the SUBJECT line by midnight October 7th.
Only 2 submissions per writer please.
*Women, people of color, and LGBTQ individuals encouraged to apply.
We'll send a confirmation email upon receipt of each submission. Because of the amount of scripts received, we will be unable to give feedback on every submission. Selections will be announced in November 2016.
We look forward to reading your scripts. Show us the love!

Elliott Hayes Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dramaturgy
Labels: grants/awards, misc.
web site
Application Information
Named in honor of Elliott Hayes, the former dramaturg and literary manager at The Stratford Festival and a dual citizen of Canada and the USA, this award recognizes excellence in dramaturgical work on a specific project over the past two years. Eligible projects may include, but are not limited to, production, season planning and implementation, educational programming, or advocacy for the profession.
The recipient of the 2017 Elliott Hayes Award, presented at the annual LMDA conference, will receive $1000 US.
There is no application fee. Applications will be evaluated through a blind submission process. The application is open to all.
Applications will be accepted from 1 August 2016 through 31 August 2016 at midnight EDT. All applicants will be notified of the panel decision and the winner will be notified by 30 November 2016. However, the public announcement will be embargoed until the presentation of the award at the LMDA Conference in Summer 2017.
Application Guidelines
1. For the purposes of this application, if you self-identify as a dramaturg, you are a dramaturg. If you come from a culture that does not view dramaturgy as separate from other parts of the creative process, or does not have a word for dramaturgy, and you feel your work fits within the rubric above, please contact me at awards@lmda.org to speak further.
2. All applications must meet the above-mentioned standards for eligibility.
3. Only one application per person.
4. Although we welcome applicants from anywhere in the world, the application must be in English.
5. The application must be a minimum of 500 and a maximum of 4000 words. The will be no reward for brevity nor punishment for length. Within the already stated boundaries, the essay should be exactly as long as it takes for you to make a strong, clear, and cogent argument for the nomination you are putting forth.
6. At this time, we do not have the capability to review secondary materials such as videos or slideshows. Although their inclusion will not disqualify an application, they will not be reviewed. No letters of reference are needed - nor will they be read if sent. As well, please do not include a resume in your application, as we are concerned with only the strength of your proposal and what currently engages you, not your history.
7. In order to facilitate the blind submission process, you must provide two separate documents in.doc or.docx format - the first discussing the work with no identifying information (including the name of the work, your name or the name of the person you are nominating, or the city, state or country in which the event took place. In other words, nothing can be included which is searchable on Google or any other search engine. The phrases "the work”, “the director”, and “the process” are all fine substitutes. The second document will include all of the identifying information not present in the first, including your name and contact info or the name and contact information of the person/work you are proposing. Your application will be reviewed by a panel of dramaturgs who represent the extraordinary talent and diversity found within our profession. As VP of Grants and Awards, I am the only person who will see the identifying information, and the panelists will not know the identity of the winner until after a decision has been reached.
8. Although you are welcome to propose the work of others, that other person must be known to you, you must have had a real-life interaction with said person, and you must be able to provide contact information for them.
9. Any project you propose cannot have been completed on or before 31 December 2015. It is fine if the project is still underway. Ideally, it should be completed by 15 June 2018, though exceptions may be made for extraordinary work.
10. The winner of the award must appear at two conferences, either in person or virtually (using an application such as Skype.) The first appearance would be to accept the award, and the second to present it to the next year’s winner.
11. The winner of the Elliott Hayes Award is required to sit on the next year’s adjudication panel.
If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me (Brad Rothbart, VP of Grants and Awards) at awards@lmda.org

3rd National Winters Playwrights Retreat
Labels: retreat
web site
The HBMG Foundation and Creede Repertory Theatre (CRT) are welcoming writers to their community in Colorado for the 3rd National Winters Playwrights Retreat.
Last winter, 30 playwrights from throughout the country accepted our invitation for an extraordinary creative retreat. This year, we are extending invitations to dramaturgs and directors as well. We want to share our winter with any playwright or group of artists who seek a place to recharge and create. If you are a playwright, director, dramaturg or producer, we invite you to apply.
Nestled in between the cliffs of this winter Colorado wonderland is a Lord D Theatre boasting some of the best performances in the western United States. HBMG Foundation and CRT want to use the serenity and creative energy of the Rocky Mountains to set the stage for new play development. You’ll stay in CRT housing, meet with artistic staff, enjoy dinner with staff and friends, and potentially have an opportunity to have your play read out loud by equity actors who have stayed the winter.
Details: You are welcome to stay and write for one week (Sunday through Saturday) January 1st –February 18. The retreat is divided into solo weeks and two group weeks. We want you to use this time for writing, networking and recharging. This is not a competition. We want you to create. If you choose, you may elect to have your play read by actors in an intimate salon setting. Afterward, you will receive feedback from the actors, staff and invited guest. We do not expect your work to be completed. In some cases, you may only have a few scenes in development if any. The reading could be at the beginning or end of your stay. Our goal is not to judge your work, but to provide you feedback for its development. Artists whose works are ready, may be encouraged to submit a piece to CRT’s Headwater’s Festival for New Plays. CRT has invited playwrights from the past two years to be a part of CRT’s Headwaters Festival.
If you can get yourself here and get yourself fed, we’ll provide the gorgeous scenery, and accommodations. You are welcome to bring actors, director or co-creators with you – for readings or planning pow wows.

Free class: SING A SECRET
Labels: class, free event
"Sing a Secret" @ Judson Memorial Church, NYC (FREE)
Whether you are a seasoned professional, a proud shower singer, or someone who has never opened their mouth to sing, Inside Voice allows singers and non-singers alike to uncover the power and beauty of their full 5-octave range while developing a deep, emotive connection to their own unique sound. Through exercises and group songs that are as silly as they are revelatory, Inside Voice shows that the only limits on our voices are the ones we impose on them and that to work on the voice is to work on the self. You’ll learn to harness powerful, heartbreaking, visceral, fragile, and otherworldly sounds you never dreamed were inside you all the while dramatically extending your range, building your confidence, and strengthening the emotional links between you and your voice. Inside Voice synthesizes Jon Stancato's research and training in the extended voice techniques of Roy Hart/Richard Armstrong and Thomas Richards/Grotowski Workcenter.

The Rewrite at Primary Stages
Labels: classAs soon as you finish your last line of dialogue, the need for rewrites begins. This class at Primary Stages ESPA will start by establishing individualized writing goals to conquer over ten weeks. Whether you choose to embark on a rewrite of your entire play or focus on individual scenes, writing exercises and in-class discussion will inspire you to ask new questions of your play, look at it from various angles, and deconstruct it with your fellow writers. You will leave this class with a stronger version of your play, and with the tools you need to transform any first draft into a polished, compelling work that’s ready to submit.
Starts September 18
Sundays from 11:00am – 2:00pm
Eddie’s class is all about being a safe place to try things. One week you may bring in a scene that totally slays, the next week, not so much. But this is the room where you can try. As a playwright, Eddie writes everything (including novels!) and doesn’t ascribe one specific style to his work. He believes that you should dive into whatever you are passionate about, so his class is dedicated to making a commitment to yourself as a writer—to really write and just go for it.
Our award-winning faculty, comprised of working professionals in the field, provides practical skills and expert guidance in a collaborative community atmosphere.
We provide students easy and convenient payment plans to break up tuition. ESPA is a home for all artists, in all stages of their careers. For more information, call 212.840.9705 x211 or email espa@primarystages.org.
