Facebook page

We are looking for short plays (no more than15 minutes) to include in the Playing With Science Short Play Experiment– a two hour mash-up of short science-themed plays. These will be performed by high school students at the Arkansas Science Festival, so please submit age-appropriate material.

We will be selecting 10 to 12 of the best plays we receive to perform throughout the Science Expo Day of the festival to be held at Arkansas State University on October 11, 2014. These plays will be considered for possible publication in an anthology by YouthPLAYS, publisher of plays for young actors and audiences. Awards will be given for Best Script as selected by our panel of judges, and Audience Favorite based upon votes from the audience.

What kind of plays are we looking for?

Good plays about science. Maybe your play is about how Edison invented the light bulb, or about ionic bonding at a nightclub, or maybe it’s about a chameleon’s existential debate over whether or not his regrown tail makes him a different lizard... as long as it is science, we want to read it. Funny plays, serious plays, anything goes.

What should I submit?
• All plays must be received by July 15, 2014
• Short plays, 7-15 pages in manuscript form
• At least 2 characters in each play, no more than 8
• No more than two submissions per playwright
• Unpublished, unproduced original plays only
• Minimal props and scene changes
• We will only be accepting electronic submissions, PDF file or Microsoft Word document in a standard play format – no
screenplays or musicals.
• This is a blind submission process. Please include TWO attachments in your submission e-mail. The first attachment should be a blind copy of the script with only the title of the play on the cover page and no identifying text. Please be sure to include the cast requirements, production requirements, and a brief synopsis. The second attachment should include the playwright’s bio, contact information, and the title of the play. Blind submissions will be given to readers. Please title the first attachment with the name of your play and add “BLIND” after it (example: MY GREAT PLAY – BLIND), and the second attachment with your last name, first name, and title of the play (example: LAST NAME, FIRST NAME – TITLE). Please be sure to put “PLAYING WITH SCIENCE” as the subject of your e-mail.
• Notifications will be made to selected playwrights in late July as soon as the readers have completed all evaluations.
