Librettists: June 1, 2017.

Applicants will be notified by August 21, 2017.

Composer/Lyricist: Three contrasting songs - uptempo, comedy song, ballad. Please include copy of score which includes lyrics.
Librettist: A script sample of at least ten consecutive pages. Material written for the stage is preferred, but screenplays or teleplays are acceptable. Material need not include songs. Please include a sample of comedy writing.

Note that if you apply as a composer and a lyricist, you will be accepted as one or the other (that is, as either a composer or a lyricist) and you will be assigned different collaborators over the course of the year. If you apply as both a composer/lyricist and a librettist and are accepted as both, you will spend your first year as a composer/lyricist only, as the two groups meet at the same time.
Auditions

Select applicants will be invited to audition in early September. Librettist are accepted on the basis of their written materials and are not required to audition.

At the auditions, composers and composer/lyricists will be asked to perform at least two contrasting theatrical compositions; lyricists will be asked to recite samples of their theatrical lyrics. All auditions must be done live, using a piano.
Program upon Acceptance

The Workshop runs September through May in New York City. Prospective members must make their own living arrangements in the city or be able to commute weekly.

During the first year, composers and lyricists are paired off and are asked to create appropriate songs based on scenes from various sources. The writers perform their assignments, which are then discussed by the other writers and the moderators. There are analyses and discussions of current and past musicals, with an eye to understanding form and structure. Every effort is made to insure that each writer retains his or her individual style.

In the Workshop’s final phase (Second Year), teams work on a musical. The Workshop functions as a forum and a sounding board for works in progress, as music and lyrics are critically evaluated and open dialogue is encouraged.

At the end of each Second Year, the Workshop Committee determines which writers from the group are invited to join the Advanced Workshop. Not everyone is asked. This Workshop is intended for writers of professional caliber who are expected to contribute to the vitality of the musical theatre scene.

The Librettist Workshop reads and critiques its members’ work in a moderated roundtable discussion format, with material going through various drafts from on-one synopses to fully scripted scenes. There are occasional cold readings of an entire project.
Schedule & Fees

The First Year Workshop meets Monday at 6:15 p.m. The Second Year Workshop meets Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Advanced Workshop meets Monday at 4:00 p.m.

There is no fee to apply for or participate in the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop.

The National Young Playwrights in Residence Program

web site

The National Young Playwrights in Residence Program is designed to nurture the next generation of playwrights through professional mentorship, staged readings, and the sharing of their work through digital platforms.

Six playwrights between the ages of 18 to 25 will be selected for a year-long mentorship with an established professional writer toward developing a new work. This will culminate in a staged reading of the young playwright’s work in August 2018 at The Echo Theater.
The Echo’s goal of this program is to break down any geographic barriers preventing talented young playwrights from receiving the recognition, support, and guidance so critical in a writer’s early development. We are committed to being there for the young writer, and insuring that new voices from all across the country are getting a chance to be heard. This residency is a transformative way for new writers to fearlessly create bold new work with the support of a professional artistic community.

Writers will be selected at the end of September 2017
Starting in October, the participants will engage in monthly digital conferences with their mentor. In this way, the program will transcend any geographical limitations, enabling The Echo to discover and nourish young playwrights in the United States.

Submission Guidelines:
Applicants must be between the ages of 18 to 25.
Writers must submit the following by August 15th-.
-Two writing samples (full length-plays, one-acts, ten-minute plays are all acceptable. They must be in .pdf format. No name, or any other writer contact information can be on the writing samples themselves)
-Cover letter describing your background, experience, what you hope to gain from this program, and the type of work you would like to create.
Please e-mail all submissions to andrew@echotheatercompany.com with the subject line National Young Playwright in Residence. We will schedule a phone interview with the final candidates the second week of September.

INGRAM NEW WORKS LAB

web site

The Ingram New Works Project was launched by Nashville Repertory Theatre in 2009 thanks to the generous support of Martha Ingram. With the mission to support the creation of new works for the theatre, Nashville Rep created a project that includes the New Works Lab.

The Ingram New Works Lab is intended to be an artistic home for early career playwrights to share and develop new work, hone craft, receive support, and springboard themselves into the next phase of their writing career.

Nashville Rep seeks committed playwrights for residency in the 2017-2018 Ingram New Works Lab. Submission deadline is July 24, 2017.

THE INGRAM NEW WORKS LAB

The Ingram New Works Lab is an artistic home for playwrights and a fertile environment for the creation of great new plays. During monthly Lab meetings in Nashville, playwrights share and develop a new work and receive transformative support and project guidance from dedicated staff.

In addition to the monthly meetings, each playwright will participate in Playwrights Week January 13-19, 2018, developing their play under the guidance of the 2017/18 Ingram New Works Fellow.

During their 2017/18 residency, each playwright will be expected to work toward the creation of a new play that will be presented in a staged reading featured at the Ingram New Works Festival in May 9-19, 2018.

The Ingram New Works Lab is a generative residency in which selected playwrights will create a new work for the theatre. Nashville Rep will serve and support selected playwrights as they work to develop their play from the idea stage to a muscular full draft. Nashville Rep will provide the playwrights-in-residence:
A season-long playwright-led script lab that meets once a month in Nashville
A supportive environment to foster and support the playwright’s process
Access to professional actors
Workshop sessions involving professional directors, designers, and dramaturgs
Access to professional marketing and audience development resources
A week-long development lab with the Ingram New Works Fellow
A staged reading presented as part of the Ingram New Works Festival
Housing during residency dates in Nashville
Travel reimbursement for each trip to Nashville
A small stipend to defray additional expenses

PARTICIPATION IN MONTHLY SCRIPT LAB

The New Works Lab will meet once a month to provide playwrights-in-residence with a supportive but disciplined environment to workshop their scripts. Every playwright will have the opportunity to hear multiple drafts of their script read aloud by actors and receive feedback from their fellow playwrights. The lab will provide the opportunity for playwrights to shape, mold, and develop as many drafts as they feel necessary before festival rehearsals begin.

Lab Meeting dates: October 20-21, 2017; November 17-18, 2017; December 15-16, 2017; February 16-17, 2018; March 16-17, 2018; April TBA

PLAYWRIGHTS WEEK WITH NEW WORKS FELLOW

Playwrights Week: January 13-19, 2018
PARTICIPATION IN INGRAM NEW WORKS FESTIVAL

Work in the Lab will be focused on goals established by the Lab Playwrights. However, each playwright will be expected to work toward the creation of a new play that will be presented in a staged reading at the New Works Festival. Please note the following criteria for New Works festival plays being developed in the lab:
