Seeking fiction, poetry, plays/screenplays and nonfiction that’s full of spunk and kick ass funk. Writing that not only shames your imitators but your friends and family too! There is no submission fee. There is no remuneration for work we publish, either, but what the heck, you're going to be famous! We'll get back to you in about 30 days, hopefully sooner. (Why should it take months?)

Fiction/Nonfiction: Up to 5000 words. Length is less important than quality. For works longer than 5000 words query the editors about possible serialization.

Submissions should be on a Microsoft Word doc or docx file. Use a sensible font. Double space format. Stuff like grammar and sentence structure is important unless your work deliberately exploits bad grammar and lack of structure. (We can tell the difference.) Include a brief bio with your submission and publishing credits, if any. Send your submission as an e-mail attachment to editors@fleasonthedog.com (or type in the link in the email address).

Include the genre (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or play) and title of your work in the subject bar.

 Simultaneous submissions are okay, just let us know when your work is accepted elsewhere. Multiple submissions are not okay unless solicited. 

Submit to only one category per issue. If you have been published by us please do not resubmit for six months unless solicited. We retain the first rights of your work for a period of three months. Bucharest Beltway Virtual Playwriting Residency

Bucharest Inside the Beltway (BiB) is a Denver-based creative arts platform for local and international artists to promote their work and collaborate on a myriad of projects, all inspired by the fearless spirit of artists in Bucharest, Romania.

We are thrilled to announce the launch of Radiance: A Virtual Playwriting Residency hosted by Bucharest Inside the Beltway. For 2021, we are focusing on the theme of Radiance.

What makes you glow? What makes you rise? Where is the positivity, the heat, the warmth, the sunshine and starshine in your body and environment? Or, what makes you diverge? What emanates from a core, seen or unseen? Where are the shadows, the chemicals, the rays of energy in your life? How do you experience radiance?

We are looking to create a tight-knit, dynamic group of 5-6 writers looking to develop new plays with each other in a collaborative environment. You do not need to have written a play before to apply to this residency. The final plays can range from a short play to one full-length play, as long as it is new work.

We invite artists and writers of all backgrounds to apply, especially BIPOC, LGBTQIA, and individuals who identify with other marginalized groups. In honor of BiB’s home cities, we are reserving one spot for a playwright from Bucharest, one from Washington D.C., and one from Denver.

The structure of the residency will consist of 8 virtual facilitated writers workshops (approx. 2 hours long) over the summer where we will share each other’s works-in-progress. Writers must commit to attending 7 out of the 8 workshops.

Workshops will be conducted in English. However, we welcome and support work in all languages, so if you are writing a play in different languages, we will find ways to translate it!

The workshops will take place between May-Aug 2021. Exact dates and times TBD based on participants’ schedules.

The final culmination will be a virtual showcase of the works from the residency, hosted by Bucharest Inside the Beltway. We also hope to have a Denver-based celebration of the plays, depending on local rules and guidance per the COVID-19 pandemic.

9TH ANNUAL COLUMBUS BLACK THEATRE FESTIVAL 2021

Mine 4 God Productions (M4GP) is now accepting creative works that say something about the state of America and the many challenges "We the people" have had to face in regard to racial equality, political unrest, and division among classes of people in America and beyond, especially during these last four years of political and racial unrest.

Our theme for 2021 is

“Say Something...it might, Change Something.”

We are accepting monologues and one-act plays that have diversity, inclusion, and equity for our 9th Annual Columbus Black Theatre Festival (CBTF) that will be held July 9-11, 2021 at The Abbey Theatre of Dublin, Ohio.

Submission dates are December 1, 2020 to January 31, 2021.

Due to the uncertainty of where Ohio will be in the summer of 2021 regarding social distancing state guideline the entries need to meet the following criteria:

ONE-ACT PLAYS

1) No more than 4 characters (If characters can play double-roles can have 6.)

2) Have minimal set/light requirements.

3) If required, play can be rehearsed/performed effectively by virtual means.

4) 20 to 30 minutes long.

5) Blocking of the play can be rearranged by the Director to meet social distance guidelines.


MONOLOGUES

1) 10 to 15 minutes long.

2ND ACT PLAYERS’ 2021 PLAYWRITING COMPETITION — 2021 ISN’T 2020, OR IS IT?

The Evanston 2nd Act Players is announcing its short-play script competition for the coming year entitled 2021: It’s not 2020, or is it? Plays that look at people changing in a changing world.

“There’s no question 2020 was a year of immense change for America, whether you looked at health issues, social justice issues or political issues. We’re looking for scripts with characters who are dealing with all those changes to create 2nd acts in their lives,” says 2nd Act Players’ Artistic Director John N. Frank. “We want scripts that deal with the issues of the past year and the coming year, either seriously or comically.”

Scripts should be a maximum of 15 pages with a maximum cast size of three characters. 

In keeping with the 2nd Act Players’ mission, characters should be adults, with preference given to plays that look at older adults and the particular challenges they face in today’s uncertain world. “Isolation and loneliness have been major issues for older adults during the Covid-19 pandemic, as an example,” says Frank.

“And many adults have dramatically changed their lives during the pandemic, whether it be where they live or how they make their livings. Others have become actively involved in social issues they have become newly conscious of. All of that could be fodder for scripts for our competition,” Frank says.

The 2nd Act Players will select six winning scripts to be performed online in April 2021.

There’s no cost for playwrights to submit scripts for the contest. Winners will receive small prizes.

To submit scripts, simply fill out the entry form online and we will contact you with instructions on how to forward a copy of your script to us. The deadline for entering is Jan. 30, 2021.


Contest basics:
  • Plots: Plays should deal with 2nd acts in characters’ lives, key turning points or major life-changing events. Comedies or dramas, or dramadies all welcome.
  • Cast size: 2-3 characters
  • Length: 10-15 pages, standard script format
  • No musicals, children’s plays, adaptations to works not in the public domain, and no plays involving nudity of any kind.
  • Prizes: Several scripts will be performed in the spring of 2021.
  • Entry deadline: Jan. 31, 2021

But wait, there’s more…
  • Plays should be new, unperformed works, or works that have been performed for less than 9 performances.
  • 2nd Act Players will retain all Chicago-area performance rights for the winning scripts from the announcement of winners through the end of April, 2021.
  • Playwrights of the scripts selected will receive prize of $50.
  • Contemporary settings that do not require special costuming are preferred.
  • An individual may enter up to three scripts
  • The 2nd Act Players reserves the right to turn down any entry for not following these guidelines.
  • Scripts to be submitted online only, in normal play script format, Word document or PDF and will not be returned. Include a short overview of the story and a short author bio.
  • 2nd Act Players reserves the right to cancel the competition if no suitable scripts are submitted.

The Miranda Family Foundation Voces Latinx National Playwriting Competition

The Latinx/Hispanic Community represents many nations and every corner of the United States. By the mid-21st Century, 1 in 3 people will identify as having raíces Latinx (Latin roots). We have journeys and histories that need to be heard and experienced on stage. The goals of The Miranda Family Foundation Voces Latinx National Playwriting Competition are to discover, develop, promote and amplify Latinx plays and playwrights. Repertorio Español is now in its 53rd season and 2nd decade of championing new works through playwriting initiatives. To that end, this competition and our theatre will prepare the way for an American Theatre that is reflective and representative of the Pan Latinx Community. An endeavor that becomes increasingly more important.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Latinx culture, history, ideals and characters must be central to the play submitted. The community must be accurately depicted and the focus of the work.
  • No screenplays, one act plays, adaptations or translations will be accepted.
  • New and un-produced plays preferred. Plays that have had readings or a workshop production are acceptable.
  • All plays must be original and full-length (minimum running time: 75 minutes) and can be written in Spanish and/or English.
  • The competition is inclusive of all playwrights who are at least 18 years of age and residents of the United States or Puerto Rico.

New Jersey Repertory Company seeks plays and musicals

New Jersey Repertory Company is soliciting the submission of 30-45 minute plays or musicals that are newly written and previously unproduced, and that can be staged on a multilevel fire escape, as the one pictured. Playwrights should keep in mind that cast size is limited to 1-3 actors (no doubling) and performers will be on separate levels with separate entrances and there will be no physical contact. Audiences will sit in their cars as in a drive-in movie or in safely distanced and designated spaces with portable seats.

The theater is planning that the fire escape plays will become a part of its ongoing programming, so there is no deadline at this time. Plays should be submitted electronically to njrep@njrep.org and should contain the full script, a cast breakdown, and a brief synopsis.


WRITE STUFF! 2021 5th Annual Young Playwright Festival

MMT’s young playwrights festival returns for its fifth anniversary! Write Stuff! encourages local middle & high school playwrights to submit their short scripts and culminates in readings of selected scripts. The winning plays will be brought to life by professional directors and Mill Mountain Theatre Conservatory students in this Pay What You Can performance. The deadline for play submissions will be February 1st, 2021.

HOW TO SUBMIT:

Students in Grades 6 – 12 should submit their 10-page scripts as a PDF file to education@millmountain.org by February 1st, 2021 for consideration to be a part of the 2021 Write Stuff: Young Playwright Festival.

Beardance Theatre - Texts in Isolation

Beardance Theatre are looking for five new texts for the next instalment of their ‘Texts in Isolation’ series of audio shorts.

Pieces must be up to 5 minutes long and be in response to the theme of ‘isolation’. This doesn’t mean that it should be about COVID or lockdown, but it also doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t! It can be a short scene, a monologue, a poem – almost anything goes! The only requirement is that you give your open, honest response to the brief.

There is no age limit. Entry is free to all and open to everyone, though Beardance are particularly interested in voices that are currently underrepresented in theatre.

This is an international opportunity, but scripts must be in English. Entrants may submit up to two pieces.

NEXT ACT! SUBMISSIONS 2021

The submission process for Capital Repertory Theatre’s Tenth Annual NEXT ACT! NEW PLAY SUMMIT is now open!

NEXT ACT!, now in its tenth year, is an expansion of Capital Repertory Theatre’s (theREP) commitment to the development of new work. At the same time, the weekend long summit is designed to complement the Upper Hudson Valley’s rich diverse populations. NEXT ACT! New Play Summit 10 will take place virtually in June of 2021 (exact dates coming soon) and will feature virtual readings of several never-before produced plays, with additional special virtual events throughout the weekend.

theREP is looking for scripts that use theatre to address injustices, inequities, and cultural collisions, providing a voice for the unheard on stage, in the workplace, the Capital Region and beyond. Specifically seeking scripts with racial, ethnic, generational, religious and gender diversity. Scripts that engage art and social justice.

Accepting full length plays only.

(No Musicals.)

Pieces written by and featuring BIPOC stories and characters encouraged.

Maximum of 3 actors (doubling is allowed if it works to illuminate the story).

ELIGIBILITY

If you have submitted in the past, please note a few changes in the guidelines. To create a successful virtual summit – with the hope of finding a play the theatre can produce in the following season – several guidelines have changed.

Eligible plays can not have been previously produced, though previous readings are allowed. Plays can have no more than three (3) actors (doubling is allowed if it works to illuminate the story).

Plays previously submitted to NEXT ACT will not be considered!

Agent and non-agent submissions accepted – both must adhere to the guidelines.

Submission Deadline: END OF DAY – Sunday, January 31, 2021 

HOW TO SUBMIT

Playwrights should submit all materials in one (and only one) document, either a Microsoft word document or a PDF file, via email attachment. This document must include: a short one-paragraph synopsis – illuminating the play’s entire plot including its ending; the character descriptions and the first ten (10) pages (and only the first ten pages) of their play. Submission documents must be void of playwright’s name and contact information.

Submissions that do not conform to the guidelines stipulated will not be accepted!

some scripts literary magazine is now accepting submissions for Issue 4: “Outbreak”!

This can refer to COVID-19, fascism, or anything that comes to mind: an outbreak of inspiration, an outbreak of solidarity, an outbreak of song. You are free to interpret “Outbreak” as you see fit. We are curious to read honest scripts for either Zoom, the radio, the stage, screen, radio, or other kinds of plague plays. We are also encouraging submissions of essays and reflections regarding the changing landscape of theatre as during the outbreak of COVID-19 and even what will be the theatre outbreak post-COVID.

Submissions from BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and womxn scriptwriters and essay writers are especially encouraged!

No deadline is currently set.

Please read the guidelines carefully below.

To submit to some scripts:
  • Include a title page in a separate PDF document from the script, detailing your preferred name to be published, contact information, a short bio, and the title of the piece.
  • Then include your piece as a separate document as a blind copy. PDF and Word document submissions are okay.
  • Compile the title page PDF and blinded copy into an email addressed to submissions@some-scripts.com or somescriptslitmag@gmail.com
  • Feel free to say hello and introduce yourself in your cover letter! We love getting to know the larger scriptwriting community more and are so happy that some scripts continues to reach more people.
some scripts literary magazine is a biannual publication published online. All contributors accepted for publication will be asked to “e-sign” a publishing agreement (see the sample copy provided at the end of this webpage).

some scripts asks for first North American serial rights (FNASR) to publish online for Issue 4. After that, we ask for archival rights to archive your piece on our website. However, all rights revert back to you upon publication.

If your piece is published somewhere else later on, we only request you acknowledge some scripts literary magazine as the publication it originally appeared in. If your piece has appeared elsewhere and has permission to be reprinted in a curated online publication, we ask you help us with an appropriate acknowledgment its previous publication. We may ask for proof that it has permission to be reprinted before going ahead with its publication in our magazine.

We absolutely will not accept any work that is racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, gratuitously violent, or otherwise harmful to a specific group of people.

The Nextfest Arts Company invites interested emerging artists to submit for Nextfest 2021. Nextfest is a multi-disciplinary emerging arts festival in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada running June 3- 13, 2021.

The Nextfest Arts Company defines emerging artists as:
  • any artist within the first ten years of their career
  • an artist who is NOT represented by any organization or union (ACTRA, EQUITY, IATSE, PGC, DGC, ADC, etc.)
  • an artist who is NOT represented by an agent or agency
If accepted as part of the festival, projects and scripts will be presented at one of the following three levels:

Whether you are into Pinter or Panto, Chekov or Chicago, we are looking to inspire you to achieve theatrical greatness and create new work for the stage.

You know nothing about plays? Fantastic! Everyone starts somewhere, right? Jump right in! You’re an old hand at writing for the stage? Awesome! Each playwriting challenge will take your skills into new, fun and fascinating territory.

In response to the effect Covid has had on our industry, we continue to offer our challenges on a commit-what-you-can basis, so everybody is welcome, and no financial obligation is required.

There are two ways in which to take part. Please choose your desired route.

TIMED ROUTE: If you submit a new and complete play every day by 10am, you'll receive a share of the pot, as detailed in our FAQs.

CREATIVE ROUTE: You can submit as and when you wish and won't receive a financial reward at the end.

MCKNIGHT FELLOWSHIPS IN PLAYWRITING

The McKnight Foundation, a family foundation based in Minnesota, advances a more just, creative, and abundant future where people and planet thrive. The McKnight Fellowship in Playwriting recognizes and supports mid-career playwrights living and working in Minnesota who demonstrate a sustained body of work, commitment, and artistic excellence. The fellowship, which runs July 1, 2021-June 30, 2022, includes: a $25,000 stipend, an additional $2,500 to support a play development workshop and other professional expenses, and $1,400 in travel funds. Past recipients include: Carlyle Brown, Lisa D'Amour, Barbara Field, Keli Garrett, Marvin González De León, Jeffrey Hatcher, Christina Ham, Tori Sampson, Carson Kreitzer, May Lee-Yang, Kira Obolensky, Harrison David Rivers, Stacey Rose, and Rhiana Yazzie.

Applicants must reside in and have the legal right to work in the U.S. during the fellowship term. Applicants must have been continuous residents of Minnesota since January 14, 2020, and must maintain residency in Minnesota during the fellowship year. Applicants must have a minimum of one work fully produced by a professional theater at the time of application. Recipients of 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21 McKnight Artist Fellowships in any discipline are not eligible. Full-time students are not eligible. Staff and board members of the McKnight Foundation and the Playwrights' Center and their immediate family members are not eligible. Fellowship recipients may not receive any other Playwrights' Center fellowships, grants, or Core Writer program benefits during the grant year. If a recipient is a Core Writer, the Core term will be extended by one year. Applicants may only apply for one McKnight Artist Fellowship each year in any discipline

Please note clearly which productions listed on your resume (if any) meet the criteria for being "fully produced by a professional theater." Professional productions are defined as productions for which the author and primary artists (actors, directors, and creative collaborators) were reasonably compensated and that received at least three public performances each. Ten-minute or one-act plays and university, college, secondary school, amateur, and Equity showcase/waiver productions are not considered full professional productions. Productions that open after January 14, 2021 do not count.

-Artistic Statement
Use this statement to describe your artistic goals and vision as a theater maker. This is also an opportunity to provide context for the play you submitted and discuss how it fits into your larger body of work and how you envision your work developing.

-Full-length play script
A full-length play generally runs at least one hour. All script submissions must be written only by the applicant—no cowritten submissions will be accepted. Scripts for musicals may submitted by the book writer only. If you have previously received a McKnight Artist Fellowship, this script must have been completed after that fellowship year.

-References
Please list two individuals who are familiar with your work as a playwright and who we may contact during the evaluation process.

2021 Austin Latinx New Play Festival Call for Play Submissions

Teatro Vivo is proud to announce a call for plays for the 2021 Austin Latinx New Play Festival in collaboration with Scriptworks.

Teatro Vivo is pleased to announce the call for entries for the 2021 Austin Latinx New Play Festival (ALNPF), presented in collaboration with ScriptWorks, to be read on a digital platform May 13 to May 15, 2021. All playwrights are invited to submit original scripts that speak to the diverse Latinx experience. We are looking for plays that would resonate with our Teatro Vivo and Austin, TX audience. Plays can be monolingual or multilingual.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, January 15th, 2021 by 11:59 PM CST.

Plays will then be blind read and scored by a diverse panel of readers. Four scripts will be selected for presentation at the festival, including one play by a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate university student, and one play for young audiences. Selected plays will be announced by February 21st, 2021.

Eligible plays must be original, full-length works with a minimum 50-minute run time and a max of 10 roles, or include a breakdown of doubling. Additionally, plays must align with the Teatro Vivo mission statement, be focused on Latinx lives, and must not have been produced before the 2021 ALNPF or already scheduled for production in 2021.

Now in its ninth year, the ALNPF provides an opportunity for playwrights to hear, see, and receive feedback on their original work. The festival brings each playwright together with a dramaturg, director, and actors to bring their play to life as a staged reading in front of an audience (online this year due to COVID). Additionally, the selected works will receive a preliminary reading in March and a period of about one month for playwrights to work with dramaturgs to revise and continue to develop their play.

Playwrights of the selected pieces will collaborate with a dramaturg and directors hired by Teatro Vivo and Scriptworks. Playwrights must be available to attend the preliminary reading of their play on March 29th, 2021, and the online public readings in May (13th-15th), and participate in a facilitated talk back on zoom with the audience immediately following the public reading. The Austin Latinx New Play Festival will take place virtually this year as we continue to work around the current pandemic.

The Strides Collective Emerging Playwrights Virtual Residency

We are seeking playwrights to participate in a Virtual Residency over the course of 3-5 months, beginning in March 2021. This is a remote play development opportunity that will be conducted via Zoom. The deadline for submissions is January 21st, 2021, with notifications of advancement sent out in early February. We will be selecting between three to five playwrights to participate in The Virtual Residency.

Submissions are open to emerging, queer-identifying playwrights in PA, NJ, DE, and NY. You must be 18+ to apply. This is an unpaid opportunity.

The Virtual Residency looks to serve finished (but not final) drafts through several monthly meetings, culminating in a public virtual presentation of the play. Selected playwrights will receive personalized dramaturgical feedback on drafts; an intimate community space of playwrights; the opportunity to hear their work read aloud by local actors; and the possibility of further development beyond the Residency’s timeline with The Strides Collective.

Playwrights Center Core Writer Program 2021-24

The Core Writer Program is a three-year appointment designed to support a diverse group of playwrights who demonstrate a sustained body of work, commitment, and artistic excellence. The program is available to emerging and established writers nationally and offers significant resources intended to further a playwright's career. 

The Core Writer program gives 25-35 of the most exciting playwrights from across the country the time and tools to develop new work for the stage. All Core Writers receive play development workshops with the Center, in collaboration with prominent directors, actors, dramaturgs, and designers. All writers are paid for their workshop time. Core Writers are eligible to be included in our formal season of public readings: the PlayLabs festival and the Ruth Easton New Play Series. 

Core Writers are also promoted by the Center and provided opportunities through an extensive network of colleges and universities, cultural institutions, and producing theaters. Each term is three years; Core Writers may reapply for additional terms. 

Applicants must reside in and have the legal right to work in the U.S. It is not required for an applicant to have had professional productions in order to apply. However, please note that this program is highly competitive and is designed for committed professional playwrights who are pursuing playwriting as their primary career. Students enrolled in a full-time educational program are not eligible. The Core Writer term will be July 1, 2021-June 30, 2024.

Triangle Rainbow Productions Gay Play Fest 2021

Triangle Rainbow Productions artistic director Anthony Joseph is currently accepting submissions from Playwrights for their first annual Gay Play Fest 2021. Because of our current situation the festival will live stream via zoom on February 27th & 28th. Each play will be scheduled for both dates at 3:00pm. Running order will be worked out before your tech rehearsal. All submissions must be no longer than 15 minutes running time and no less than 10 minutes. All plays must be LGBTQ themed, or have at least one gay character written in the script. 

The best play only will receive a $300.00 stipend.

All Playwrights accepted into the festival will be expected to promote the festival via social media and invite friends to watch their plays. Actors should also promote and invite friends to watch. There will be a minimal charge to register for the zoom link.

There is no entry fee for Playwrights to submit their plays and no fee to participate. You may submit one or two of your best short plays. If space becomes available some Playwrights will be asked to produce both of their plays. Each Playwright must cast and produce their own plays. You are responsible to find your own directors. All plays should have virtual backgrounds selected by their directors or creative team. No play will be allowed to run if they do not use virtual backgrounds. Each play will be given a tech time of one hour via zoom with the artistic director a few days before the festival opens. The best play will be selected by audience votes as well as the artistic directors choice.

Hashtag Queer: LGBTQ+ Creative Anthology is the annual collection of creative literary work by and about LGBTQ+. It includes fiction, nonfiction, poetry and scripts up to 7,500 words.

For all anthologies to be published after January 1, 2020, we will no longer be paying $5 per printed page. Instead we will be instituting a royalty system, whereby we share a book’s profits with all of that book’s contributors.
Payment for writers and artists contributing to any anthologies will published will be a split of the net income from sales of that book with the publishers and other contributors, as follows:
Net income = Retail price – costs of printing and distribution
Printing and distribution costs vary depending on which of the two printers/distributors we use (Amazon & Ingram) processed the sale.
Of the net income from each book, the Publishers will keep 50% and the other 50% will be split evenly among all the writers and artists who contributed work to the book. Generally, each of our anthologies have between 14 and 40 contributors.
Because we are a tiny company, royalties will be calculated once per year on the anniversary of the book’s publication date and payments along with documentation of sales will be distributed within 30 days afterward.

If you have already submitted work to us for an upcoming anthology, and you wish to withdraw that piece from consideration due to this change in payment structure, just let us know.

Reverb is a space for artists with disabilities ages 16+ to devise and share new works of theatre on a virtual platform.

Sesame Workshop Writers’ Room Fellowship

Sesame Workshop Writers’ Room is a writing fellowship from the creators of Sesame Street. And we’re looking for YOU! Fresh new writing talent from underrepresented racial backgrounds. Emerging storytellers who are selected to join the Writers’ Room will receive hands-on writing experience guided by Sesame Street veterans and other media industry leaders. Each participant will develop and write a pilot script for their own original kids concept.

The Sesame Street Writers’ Room fellowship is an effort to identify and increase the presence of underrepresented voices in children’s media writing. For this specific purpose, underrepresented groups are those who identify as any of the following: Asian, Pacific Islander, Black, Hispanic, Native American, Middle Eastern, or multiracial.

What Are The Requirements?

Congratulations on NYCPlaywrights Tenth Anniversary!

I am so happy that I found NYCPlaywrights. I check on a regular basis to see what I might qualify for.  
In 2019, I submitted to Houston's Fade to Black Play Festival and my 10-minute play, Convictions was selected to be produced as one of ten plays by African American playwrights. It was one of the best experiences I've had seeing my play on the stage then to have it open the festival for those three nights was truly an honor.

I am continuing to find great opportunities that I would not have found without NYCPlaywrights.

4th Annual TASN Short Play Festival

They have met the 200 play limit and are no longer accepting new plays

The Actors Studio of Newburyport, MA is dedicated to New Play Development and will be holding its fourth annual Short Play Festival in the Fall, 2021. The submission window opens on January 1, 2021 and closes March 1, 2021, or until 200 plays have been received, whichever occurs first.

Length: 5-15 minutes. Send us your best. There is no theme and no restrictions on content.

Workshops, readings, and several previous productions are okay.

Limit: One play per playwright. There is no fee to submit.

As we enter 2021, we are hedging our bets. It’s possible that we’ll be back on the boards by the Fall, producing and performing live theater in front of our wonderful audiences. It’s also possible that live theater will remain elusive, shifting to 2022, and that our offerings will remain virtual for the coming year.

So, your play should be easily adaptable to the Zoom format AND be meant for the stage.

A play with 10 characters, elaborate settings, and a lot of props, isn’t going to work. A play with four or less characters with simple requirements probably will.

In the past, we’ve requested a $5.00 donation per submission. TASN is non-profit and your tax deductible donations have been used to help defray the cost of producing our Festivals which are dedicated to the development of New Work.

Our judges will participate in multiple rounds of reading and after 24 semi-finalists are chosen, we will hold an All-Day Selection Sunday, putting all semi-finalists on their feet. The winners will be announced in summer, 2021, with the top-scoring play receiving the coveted Clopton Prize.

This Festival is sponsored by our Weekend Writers Workshop whose playwrights have been produced at more than 250 venues around the country. This Festival brought to by playwrights, for playwrights, and will be directed and performed by our amazing TASN talent. Good luck and see you at the show!
