Experimental Theater Writing Workshop - Winter 2022

Seeking female or female-identifying experimental writers for the Winter 2022 Experimental Theater Writing Workshop. This is a series of ten Zoom classes/workshops held every Tuesday evening from 02/01 - 04/05. Classes will consist of discussions of homework material; prompt assignment; readings of work generated in class. The last class will consist of final presentations.

Meta-modernism posits itself as a ‘post-ideological’ condition that stresses engagement, affect, and storytelling through "ironic sincerity”—something unachievable for post-modern pastiche. And yet, does fragmentation automatically exclude engagement, sincerity or irony? In seeking a representative experience of our world--writing that reflects who we are--we might continue to delve into our inner selves, allowing ourselves to represent the world as we experience it—both logically and illogically with engagement, sincerity and irony.

The goals of this course are multifaceted: 1) to gain theatrical writing techniques which expand the writer’s current theatrical repertoire; 2) to understand writing techniques as a representation of the writer’s inner response; and 3) to create a short experimental theatrical work derived from dreams.

Guidelines:
  • Only 1 submission per playwright
  • 1 experimental writing sample. Each sample is up to 10 pages only.
  • Title page on sample should contain:
    • title
    • name
    • contact info
  • Second page should contain:
    • Character breakdown
    • setting
    • time
file name of sample play should read: titleOfPlay_lastname_exp.pdf

Writers will be selected based on the nature of the work submitted and availability. By experimental, we mean work that challenges the conventional elements of theater. If selected, the fee is $350.
