Athena Theatre invites you to submit to “Athena Writes,” an emerging playwrights’ group assembled for a one-year exploration of the theme: “A New Memory,” and centered on Athena Theatre’s commitment to supporting new work which pushes at the boundaries of live theatre.

We especially encourage playwrights with an eye for diverse characters, strong points of view, and action focused dialogue to apply.

As a part of “Athena Writes,” playwrights will meet twice a month on Tuesdays (or a date that works best for the group), beginning in mid-January 2017, for three hours, to discuss the year’s theme, share new work and talk playwriting and the business of theatre. Playwrights will be asked to write a short, 10-minute play for production at the New Play Festival currently scheduled at a NYC theatre in Spring 2017. They will also spend the year working on a full length piece on this year’s theme. The playwright group will be facilitated by Athena Theatre Company’s 2017 playwright-in-residence, Nora Sorena Casey.

All playwrights will offer a ten-minute play at the play festival. Athena Theatre will provide the theater space and PR outreach; playwrights will be responsible for any specialty costumes, props or scenic items. The compilation of all ten-minute plays creating in residence will be submitted for publication consideration.

Those selected will be asked for an admission fee to be a part of “Athena Writes,” emerging  playwrights’ group 2017 is $125. This contribution goes directly to theatre rental, actor and crew stipends for the New Play Festival and the Year-End Staged Reading.

The playwrights’ full-length plays will also be considered for full production by Athena Theatre in its next season. The next year’s playwright-in-residence will also be chosen from this group of playwrights.

We will have guest dramaturges throughout the year to give feedback on the new pieces. We will also keep playwrights apprised of all play submission opportunities. The meeting space is at the Dramatists Guild Fund and playwrights will be able to hear their work read out loud. The three hour meetings will comprise of discussion about individual playwrights’ projects, as well as readings of new work, where playwrights will cast (from the other writers) and hear their work read aloud. 

Athena Theatre believes that a play cannot be fully understood until the words hit the ear of an audience. This process will allow playwrights to deepen their understanding of their own work, as well as glean ideas and approaches from their fellow playwrights.

Playwrights will be asked to concentrate on both their ten-minute piece, as well as their full-length piece throughout the year.  At the end of the year, 10-minute excerpts from each full-length play will be presented as a staged reading at a NYC venue TBA.

Live Girls! Theater is currently seeking submissions of ten-minute plays for our 17th festival of short plays, Quickies. Please note- Live Girls! accepts submissions by all those who identify as women as well as those who identify as genderqueer, transfeminine and non-binary.

ABOUT QUICKIES 17:

Quickies is Live Girls! trademark event and our longest running program. This festival will be focused on the theme “LOST & FOUND.” Quickies Volume 17 will be performed in association with Annex Theatre in June 2017.

New works are encouraged but submissions that have had previous productions outside of Seattle will be accepted.

Seeking new screenplays, plays, music compositions, and performance art pieces for The Great Griffon, Inc.'s upcoming monthly staged reading series beginning in January. 

Works can be any length, any genre, and in any phase of development; just keep in mind the company's mission statement of shattering gender and LGBTQ stereotypes.

ANNUAL SHORT PLAY COMPETITION: THINK FAST 2017

The Theater Project’s annual short play competition awards the winner for Best Play a $500 prize. The contest is open to adult playwrights in the New Jersey and New York metropolitan area. There is no fee to submit your play for consideration. Performances will be in February, 2017.

Deadline for submissions are November 18, 2016. 

All performances will be at The Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts in Maplewood, NJ in February 2017

Plays can be either dramas or comedies but must be no more than 15 minutes running time. This restriction is absolute and plays that exceed 15 minutes will not be considered. Sets, lighting and sound requirements must be simple. No elaborate props or effects. Playwrights invited to participate must have plays that are ready-to-perform and supply their own actors and directors.

​Those selected for participation will be charged a $150 fee to cover expenses (venue, stage manager, lighting/sound director).

Lama is now accepting submissions for two new One Act plays that are inspired by the project’s question. We are open to submissions from both genders but we are interested in plays that address the topic from a woman’s character point of view.

When you submit please keep in mind that Lama encourages artistic exploration, provoking and risk taking writing.

We are looking for one act plays which have not been previously produced in New York. Plays that have received an Equity production, musicals, children’s shows or full-length plays are not accepted.

The chosen two One Act plays will be premièred at Under St. Marks Theater, New York as part of Lama’s Winter Season 2017.

We will assign a director to each play that is chosen. We will also provide the venue, lights, sound and production needs.


Our Mission: Lama means WHY in Hebrew. The Lama Theater Company is a writer/director driven, nonprofit company that continually raises questions and encourages bold new writing and directing. Lama generates new work that explores theatrical, psychological, political and social questions from within the nation and around the world to inspire different points of view and theatrical visions.

Four Quarter Theater, a NYC based theater ensemble, is currently accepting 10 minute plays for winter season Fireside

In each quarter of the year, and aligning with the seasons, Four Quarter Theater aims to produce a new set of ten-minute plays. Each season is framed around a theme, which relates to the season in which the quarter falls. Each theme is open to artistic interpretation and is provided as a thematic framework to guide the playwright. The format of the performances will be staged readings in New York City.

Four Quarter Theater is currently accepting 10 minute plays for our winter 2017 season Fireside.

Below please find our submission requirements and additional guidance to successfully submit your piece to Four Quarter Theater. Please note that playwrights are eligible to submit one piece per season only.

Submission Requirements

§ The play must be presentable in ten minutes (generally between 7 to 12 pages of dialogue).

§ Cast should not exceed 5 actors.

§ There is a submission limit of one play per theme. The playwright must designate the theme submitted for in the subject line of the email (Fireside).

§ Please do not submit first drafts. Due to the number of submissions, Four Quarter Theater can only read any play one time.

§ Original and never before produced plays are highly encouraged.

Cover Letter in Body of Email

§ Title, author’s name, address, phone number, email address.

§ A brief description of the play—this need not be a summary, but may include description of the play’s world, the characters, the conflict, reason for writing, connection to theme, etc.

§ Title page should include at least the title, cast of characters, time and place.

§ Script should be approximately 7 to 12 pages not including title page and include completed dialogue as plays cannot be edited after submission.

Selection of Plays

The play selection process is conducted by the Play Selection Committee. As many as seven plays are selected for each series (approximately 4 times a year). Only selected playwrights will be contacted. Plays not chosen for this quarter/year may be considered for future series if considered by the company to be theme appropriate.

Four Quarter Theater reserves the sole right to make all production decisions with regard to the plays selected. Four Quarter Theater reserves the right to photograph, audio and video record selected plays to be utilized for promotional materials; promotional video and audio recordings will only include clips of performances and never the full performance of the selected play. Any recordings will be shared with selected playwrights.

Four Quarter Theater is committed to highlighting work of emerging artists. There is no financial compensation for entries, nor is any financial commitment required by the playwright.

Gallery Players seeks plays

The Gallery Players in Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York, is seeking plays for its 20th Annual Black Box New Play Festival to be held in June, 2017. Each play selected will be given a black box production at Gallery Players and will be performed in a festival format with non-equity actors. Playwrights must be available for rehearsals and use this as an opportunity to continue work on their play.

THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: DECEMBER 31, 2016

Submission guidelines:

• Plays must be un-produced (readings are ok); must be the play’s world premier

Seeking submissions for the Spring 2017 season

The Bechdel group accept new plays and screenplays, scripts in development, partial scripts, drafts - anything in progress. Our readings are designed to provide an opportunity to further script development, so we're excited about work that is not yet 'complete'. We typically feature 20 - 35 pages (roughly a half hour) of a script.

Our aim is provide an informal, festive, safe space to hear your work and get feedback from actors, directors, dramaturgs, and theater lovers.

You may submit your script at anytime, but we read and respond in two windows:
For our Fall Workshop Series: we read scripts between March 1 and June 15, and aim to respond to all submissions by the first week of July.

For our Winter/Spring Workshop Series: we read scripts between August 1 and November 15, and aim to respond to all submissions by the first week of December.

We are happy to accept submissions that are being shopped elsewhere, but we ask that you contact us if your script is selected for another workshop, a staged reading, or production.

Due to the high volume of submissions, we regret that we cannot give each submission individual feedback.

Your submission MUST:

• Be in progress. Our aim is to provide a space that will help you develop your work. If your script or screenplay is 'finished', has had full productions, or is about to be produced, we are not the right organization for you. We are happy to consider work that has had prior workshops or informal/staged readings, if you still consider your script in development.
• Pass the Bechdel Test. You must have two female characters, with names, who have a full scene/conversation that is not about their romantic relationships.
• We are constantly discussing the Bechdel Test and the way it serves (or fails to serve) our mission. We know that as a 'test', there are flaws and gaps. We are indeed interested in scripts that push boundaries and raise discussion points - however, this is our baseline. Please do not send us two-handers with one male and one female character or scripts with only one female character.
• Support our mission of fostering strong, complex, dynamic roles for women.

What we want:
Complex, layered female characters.
Thoughtful consideration of your needs in terms of script development - we look at the questions you're asking about your work carefully.

What we do not want:
Scripts that just manage to pass the Bechdel Test. If your main female character goes 60 pages without interacting with anyone but men, chances are good we will not be interested. If your qualifying scene does not forward your plot, chances are good we will not be interested.

MULTISTAGES 2017 NEW WORKS CONTEST

MultiStages, a multicultural, multidisciplinary theatre company located in New York City, is seeking original, unproduced, high quality full-length multidisciplinary plays by established and emerging writers for its eighth New Works Contest. The Contest Winner will receive a Workshop Staged Reading with professional actors or a Fully-Staged Production at a reputable theatre in New York City under an AEA approved code. The Finalists will receive a Staged Reading with professional actors in the New Works Festival.

MultiStages produces non-traditional multicultural, multidisciplinary theatre works that incorporate a fusion of art forms rarely found in today’s theatre. These fusions include collaborations with artists working in dance, music composition (including opera), visual arts, puppetry, poetry, multimedia, et al. If your play includes music, you may choose to submit with a composer. All submitted scripts must be multidisciplinary and multicultural, and respect non-traditional casting choices. All productions are subject to development by MultiStages in collaboration with the playwright.

ELEVENTH NOR'EASTERN PLAYWRITING CONTEST

This is the Eleventh year of premiered staged readings of three winning one-act plays in showcase at the Brick Box Theatre housed in the beautiful Paramount Theatre in downtown Rutland, Vermont. Vermont Actors’ Repertory Theatre is in its Twelfth season. The Nor’Eastern Contest winners will receive an intense day and a half’s work on each play, and two evenings of Showcasing as well as three nights lodging. The Nor’Eastern Showcase rehearsal and performance dates for this year will be May 18, 19 & 20, 2017. First, each script goes through a rigorous screening process with panels of readers. The scripts with the highest scores are submitted to a second panel, and then the finalists are read by a single reader who selects the three scripts to be showcased.

High School Playwrights

High school-aged playwrights are encouraged to enter. Plays must include a letter from a teacher or school administrator, written on school letterhead, verifying that the play was written during high school, in addition to the guidelines below. If the committee chooses to name a high school entry as a finalist for the 13th annual contest, the play will be produced with the other finalists in our festival in June 2017.

Please read the following rules and requirements carefully. Plays not meeting the requirements will be disqualified.

Submission Guidelines

• The play should be approximately ten-minutes in length.
• The play must have no more than five on-stage (speaking and non-speaking) characters.
• You may submit only one play, so send us your best! Please do not make more than one submission.
• The play should be in a “play format” making it easy for the readers. (We like 12-point, easy to read fonts, such as Times New Roman or Arial)
• The play must be unpublished and unproduced at the time of submission to our contest. We do screen for this, so don’t send us your play if it has been produced. (Staged readings are not counted as “produced.”)
• Submitting your play to our contest grants Lakeshore Players the right to produce your play in our annual festival and photograph and/or videotape it for archival purposes, if it is chosen as a finalist.

Additional Guidelines

• The play should have simple technical requirements. There won’t be a set — a few furniture pieces and a few props only — we only have about one minute in between plays to change scenes.
• As a community theatre, we want to appeal to the largest possible audience, therefore plays with excessive offensive language are less likely to be selected – please keep that in consideration.
• Two ways to submit: Email or Mail.
• Your play must be received no later than November 15, 2016 to be eligible.

Därkhorse Dramatists seeks one-act plays

Please consider the following guidelines for Därkhorse Drämatists “Four Our Hearts”! This is our smaller festival featuring 4 headlining selections. It’s important to note, that while we favor newer plays, this festival is not limited to original work. Your submissions may have been produced at other venues, so long as it is unpublished and wasn’t featured in last year’s festival. Besides one-act plays, we are also looking for 1-person shorts & monologues. Please refer to the guidelines below.

One-acts: 25 page maximum / 10 page minimum. (No minimum page count for 1 person shorts or monologues). No exceedingly violent or pornographic material. Adult language allowed within reason.

Plays may have a maximum of 3-4 characters and should take place in a limited setting and minimal props.

Due for submission by December 6th. 2 submissions allowed per playwright.

Playwright must provide contact information including their location and previous production history of the play where applicable. Regional playwrights are given first consideration.

365 Women A Year: a playwriting project

Plays can be ANY length and you can have ANY number of characters.

PLAYS DUE DECEMBER 31, 2016 (There are no extensions.)
FIRST STEP: Choose a woman or women to write about. We are looking for 365 NEW women that our project has not yet covered. We do not accept repeats from previous years yet. You can make sure you don’t claim a repeat by searching through our historical women alphabetically. If you are not sure who to write about, scroll down for a list of available women.

Once you have chosen some options, you will fill out the CLAIM FORM. You will be asked to choose at least 3 options, in case your lady has already been claimed.

SECOND STEP: You will receive a confirmation email. You are not officially writing about anyone until you have received this confirmation email from 365womenayear@gmail.com. It can take up to two weeks to get a confirmation email depending on the volume of claims we receive.

THIRD STEP: Happy writing. If at any point throughout the year, you get a hankering to write about someone else, simply fill out a new claim form.

Plays can be any length, any number of characters, and the playwriting format you are most comfortable with. PLEASE INCLUDE A LIST OF CHARACTERS at the beginning of the play.

FOURTH STEP: Submitting your piece. Please follow the directions, as your piece will not be officially submitted otherwise.

(1) In the subject line you will put: 2016/Name of historical woman/Play Title/Page Number/Your Name. (If you have many historical women in your piece, simply write MANY WOMEN, in place of the name of the historical women in the subject line.)

Prize for Women Playwrights

The next submission period for our biennial Prize for Women Playwrights will be November 2016 at this link [to come]. For our last cycle in fall 2014 we received over 300 submissions, reviewed blindly by our judging panel of theater professionals Mylissa Crutcher, Tonda Fields, Kathryn Newquist, and Eric Seale. Playwright Carson Kreitzer chose the winner.

The Kentucky Women Writers Conference awards a biennial Prize for Women Playwrights to bring more scripts by women to the stage, through a collaboration among our program, a partnering theater, and a guest judge. The winner receives a world premier production for a paying audience, with royalties, plus a cash prize of $500. The winning script may be workshopped prior to its production. Eligible Playwrights

The competition is open to all women playwrights. There are no restrictions on age, experience, or residence, meaning you are still elibible if you reside outside of Kentucky or outside of the United States. Co-authored scripts are eligible if at least 50 percent of co-authors are female.
Eligible Plays

One-act or full-length scripts in English, with a running time between 45 and 90 minutes, that have not been published or commercially produced as of the entry deadline and will not be published or produced before the release of the KWWC production. However, scripts that have been staged in a workshop production or script-in-hand staged readings are eligible: we are seeking new plays that can be produced as world premieres. We place no limitations on subject matter. Scripts may be based on factual events, purely fictional, or adaptations. We are not seeking musicals or children's plays.To ensure an equitable judging process, please submit only a "blind" script, with all personal identifying information removed. Limitations:
Reading time must be in the range of 45-90 minutes.
Casts must be limited to 8 actors (1 actor may play multiple roles).
The production will be in a small black box theater. Set, lighting, sound, costume, and prop requirements should be kept to a minimum.

Judging Process and Criteria

All entries will be screened by KWWC staff for completeness and adherence to contest guidelines. Judging will consist of two rounds. In round 1, a diverse panel of theater professionals and educators will choose 5-10 finalists. In round 2 a guest judge will choose 1 winner. Judging will be guided by literary merit and theatrical potential.


Past Winners & Guest Judges

Naomi Wallace was our first judge in 2011 and chose Keliher Walsh’s play, Year of the Rabbit, produced by Balagula Theatre in Lexington. Kia Corthron was our next judge in 2013 and chose Jo Morello’s E.G.O.: The Passions of Eugene Gladstone O’Neill, also produced by Balagula. Carson Kreitzer selected in The Silent Woman by Lydia Blaisdell, independently produced by Eric Seale in 2015. The Silent Woman tells the strange, true tale of a painter living with an effigy of his ex-lover in 1919. It had its world premiere in Lexington, KY on Nov. 5 - 7, 2015 (press release).

8th Annual Northport One-Act Play Festival

The Northport One-Act Play Festival is a wonderful opportunity to showcase one-act plays and offer the theater community an opportunity to produce a performance of those plays.

There is NO FEE to submit an application and play for consideration to be in the Festival. You may submit up to 2 plays for the Festival. A separate application must accompany each play submitted.

JUDGING/PARTICIPATION: Plays submitted for the Festival will be reviewed by our panel of judges. The plays may also be read during a meeting at the Northport Reader’s Theater, if time allows, prior to the selection deadline. Playwrights whose plays are presented at a meeting will be invited to attend.

You will be notified by December 15, 2016 if your play is chosen to participate in the Festival. At that time, each playwright must submit A PARTICIPATION FEE of $75.00, which will help defray some of the expenses - such as space rental, printing, and publicity - along with your Release Agreement by January 1, 2017. Playwrights will receive one complimentary ticket to each Performance of their play and a DVD.

Important: The Northport One-Act Play Festival is held in a church. Please consider the language and situations used in your script. If you feel that your play is not appropriate for younger audiences, please let us know so that we are aware of this.

PROOF OF CONCEPT is a reading series focused on investigative theatre. We are seeking original, unproduced, high quality full-length plays and musicals based on real people, places, and/or events.

Produced by Life Jacket, an award-winning theatre company based in New York City, this reading series will spotlight smart, new, unpredictable works that support the company’s mission of telling real-life stories on stage in visually inventive and lyrically rich ways. Association for Theatre in Higher Education ATHE Award for Excellence in Playwriting

The Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) is pleased to announce the ATHE Award for Excellence in Playwriting. The award honors a new play marked by sophisticated and nuanced storytelling, with the potential to make a major artistic impact on contemporary theatre.

Plays must have been written during the two years preceding the upcoming national conference (August 2017) by playwrights engaged with an institution of higher education (be it student, faculty, artist in residence, guest artist, etc.) during that time period. 

Only full-length plays, in Samuel French Playwriting Format, may be nominated for this award. Self-nominations and nominations from ATHE members are permitted. Only one play may be submitted per playwright in any given year. The plays can be produced or unproduced, but must be unpublished.

Qualifying plays should be submitted through the ATHE website. No submission fees are required. The winning playwright is expected to attend the ATHE Conference and participate in a development workshop and staged reading of the play. The conference takes place - The playwright will receive conference registration, four nights in the conference hotel, $500 towards travel expenses (reimbursement), and a one-year membership in the Dramatists Guild. Additionally, the winner will receive a plaque at the annual ATHE Awards Celebration and attend a reception.

Submission Guidelines

• Electronic submissions are required. Word, PDF, and Rich Text formats preferred.
• Samuel French script formatting required.
• Although we do permit the submission of musicals, the limitations of staff and resources will make it difficult for us to produce such material.
• We do not accept screenplays.
• Your play must not include material that you do not have permission to use.
• Your play must not be previously published.
• Previous production of your script is allowed 
• Do not submit a play that is incomplete, unfinished, or a rough draft. Send us the entire completed play.
• The ATHE Award for Excellence in Playwriting committee has no problem with you submitting your play to other competitions simultaneously.
• Plays must be full-length. The rule of thumb is that plays under an hour are not full length. 
• The screening for the award will be done by blind reading. Therefore we would request that names not be put on each page of the manuscript, but ONLY on the cover page. The readers for the award will not receive the cover page.

Jewish Women's Theatre seeks scripts

Okay, you’re Jewish, that’s a good start, but how “Jewish” do you have to write? When submitting material, consider the following parameters for your submission:

• Please check the themes of the season and submit accordingly. We will not accept late submissions this year. Thank you!
• An element of Jewish resonance is important, but your submission does not need to feature being Jewish as the prominent theme or subject.
• Feature women or a woman’s point of view, but not exclusively. Male characters are welcome.
• Short one-acts (10 minutes max) and monologues (7 minutes max) are preferred. Will read full-length, but unlikely will produce.
• 1500 words or less preferred
• Must be topical for the 21st century. While we consider plays set in another time period, we mostly select contemporary pieces.
• Small cast a must. One-person shows okay.
• Previously produced or published work is welcome. Please include production and/or publication history. A new version of a classic or an adaptation from another medium would definitely be of interest.

Although the primary focus of the JWT is on the writing, music is often a part of our events. We encourage composers, song-writers, and performers to submit individual work. Musicals are welcome.

Theatre Southwest is now accepting 5- to 10-minute scripts for the 12th Annual Reader's Theatre. Deadline for submission is Nov 7, 2016. Approximately 8-12 selected plays will be read and voted on by the attending audience. The audience favorite receives a $100 prize!

General guidelines

• Limit of two entries per playwright of an original work that has not been published or produced.
• Monologues and one man/woman plays are not accepted.
• All genres are accepted (light comedies, heavy dramas, thrillers, mystery, sci-fi, satire) with no regard to language or subject matter.
• All plays should be 5 to 10 minutes long, no exceptions. (If using standard play format a good gauge is 4-11 pages, excluding title page).

The University of Houston School of Theatre & Dance 10-Minute Play Festival

The University of Houston School of Theatre & Dance is excited to announce our third annual 10-Minute Play Festival for spring of 2017. We will begin accepting submissions for this festival on August 15, 2016; the submission period closes on October 31, 2016. Nine selected 10-minute plays will receive productions as part of a multi-evening festival, produced in the newly upgraded José Quintero Theatre on the University of Houston campus. This festival is open to all applicants, amateur or professional.

Submission rules:

 Scripts will only be accepted during a submission window of August 15 through October 31, 2016. Scripts received outside this window will not be accepted. The list of winning plays will be announced in November.

 We will accept only one play per playwright.

 Scripts should fall in the range of 8-12 pages and run roughly ten minutes. (Page count does not include the title page.)

 Characters in submitted plays should fall between the ages of 16-30 or else there should be no specific restrictions on the ages of the characters.

 Previously produced plays are not eligible.

 Musicals and plays for children are discouraged.

 Submissions will be acknowledged via email, but we do not offer critiques.

 Nine winning plays will receive productions in the José Quintero Theatre at the University of Houston in spring of 2017.

T. Schreiber Studio & Theatre's 2017 New Works Project

The T. Schreiber Theatre's New Works Project is an opportunity for playwrights to have their work heard and seen in a professional setting. Phase 1 of the submission process takes place October 6-November 1, 2016. Three finalists will be chosen for the project to have their play presented in a three night reading series. One winner will be selected to receive a workshop production run of their show with artistic support from the T. Schreiber production team.

Mission Statement:
The T. Schreiber Studio & Theatre New Works Project is committed to supporting the development of new plays in a safe and nurturing environment-one that serves the playwright and enriches the T. Schreiber community as a whole. TSS provides the playwright access to the expertise of experienced theatre professionals, sophisticated and well trained actors, and a supportive, interactive audience. In the New Works Project, T. Schreiber will develop new theatrical productions through a series of staged readings and collaborative refinement, culminating in a professional workshop production. The goal is to foster and elevate writers’ work to its fullest potential.

Three plays will be chosen as finalists to receive staged readings, performed by T. Schreiber actors. One play will be chosen as the New Works Project winner to receive a workshop production with a 2-week run. NWP Program Director Jake Turner will work with playwright to further develop the winning play and will serve as Director for the workshop production. Audience feedback is solicited and the production staff of T. Schreiber will work directly with the playwright to refine the play. There will be no cash prize provided for the selected play.

The New Works Project is committed to script development and successful production of new works. Winning playwrights are expected to participate fully in the development process: working directly with the director and T. Schreiber staff during staged readings; interacting with audiences post-readings; and participating in the workshop production. While T. Schreiber cannot provide transportation or housing to playwrights submitting works from outside the NYC area, every effort will be made to help selected playwrights find local accommodations.

If selected for Phase II, manuscripts should be sent within 1 week of notification. Manuscripts should be properly formatted and have the playwright’s name, contact address and phone number on the front page. PDF's and MS Word file formats preferred. All manuscripts selected for Phase II will be read and reviewed by the selection committee. Again, no unsolicited manuscripts.

The EST/Sloan Project commissions, develops and presents new works delving into how we view and are affected by the scientific world. These plays examine the struggles and challenges scientists and engineers face from moral issues to the consequences of their discoveries.

The Project is designed to stimulate artists to create credible and compelling work exploring the worlds of science and technology and to challenge existing stereotypes of scientists and engineers in the popular imagination. The Project commissions and develops new works throughout EST’s developmental season, including one Mainstage Production, as well as workshops and readings in an annual festival called FIRST LIGHT.

Now in its 15th year, the EST/Sloan Project has awarded commissions totaling more than $450,000 to more than 140 artists. Previous commissionees include: Billy Aronson, Mike Daisey, Jason Grote, Ann Marie Healy, Michael Hollinger, Israel Horovitz, Tina Howe, Shirley Lauro, Emily Levine, Romulus Linney, Quincy Long, Cassandra Medley, Dan O’Brien, Carey Perloff, Bill Pullman, Jaquelyn Reingold, Tommy Smith, Caridad Svich, Vern Thiessen, Alex Timbers, Bridgette Wimberly, David Zellnik, Stillpoint Productions, and The Royal Shakespeare Company.
COMMISSION AWARDS

Commissions will be awarded to individuals, groups and creative teams for full-length and one-act plays and musicals. Commissions range from $1000 to $10,000. Commission amounts are determined on a case-by-case basis, as are deadlines for drafts, finished work, and research support (if appropriate). Extant, full-length works may be submitted and are judged on a script-by-script basis by the EST/Sloan Project staff. Rewrite commissions for existing scripts range from $1,000 to $5,000.

Commissions are also available for regional theaters who wish to sponsor a local project focused on science and technology, either by commissioning a new script or developing an extant piece. Regional commission amounts are determined on a case-by-case basis, ranging from $2,000 - $5,000.

The EST/Sloan Project is open to a broad range of topics related to the issues, people, ideas, processes, leading-edge discoveries, inventions, and/or history of the "hard" sciences and technology.

NEW COMMISSIONS

Individuals, creative teams and theatre companies interested in receiving an EST/Sloan Project commission should submit the following as their application for a grant:
A one- or two-page description or a simple outline/synopsis of the project. This document should describe the actual story being explored and include in the description of the story how the science being portrayed would be inherently dramatic in the piece. Focus on plot and character development, and, as it ideally will in the finished play, how the science comes out through plot and character.
A resume or biography of each collaborator involved.

REWRITE COMMISSIONS

Individuals, creative teams and theatre companies interested in receiving an EST/Sloan Project rewrite grant should submit the following as their application:
A draft of the script.
A one- or two-page cover letter detailing the development history of the play, your goals for a rewrite commission, and any questions you have about the current draft.
A resume or biography of each collaborator involved.

A selection committee evaluates the proposals and makes the final decisions. Candidates may be asked to revise aspects of their proposals, provide writing samples, and/or arrange a meeting to discuss their project as part of the selection process.

Playwrights may send us one play per season for consideration. The proposed play must still be in development and cannot be receiving a professional production prior to August 2017.

The Reva Shiner Comedy Award

The Reva Shiner Comedy Award presents an unpublished full-length comedy with a cash prize of $1,000, a full production as part of the Bloomington Playwrights Project's Mainstage season, along with travel reimbursement. We are currently accepting submissions for the 2017-18 Season. The deadline is October 31, 2016.

1. "Full-length" plays will have a complete running time of between 1 hour 15 minutes (75 minutes) to 2 hours 15 minutes (135 minutes).
2. Plays submitted must be unpublished at the time of submission. Plays that have received developmental readings, workshop productions, or productions at small theatre companies are acceptable. No scripts with previous productions at major regional theaters will be accepted. Once entered, subsequent activity does not change the acceptability of the script.
3. Each submission must include a synopsis (1 page or less) including the cast size. A separate page should include a brief bio of the playwright, and production/development history if applicable.
4. Each submission must include a cover letter with contact information and a $10.00 reader fee. Agent submissions require no fee. The fee will be waived for Dramatist Guild members with an enclosed photocopy of a membership card. 
5. It is preferable for musicals to include a demo CD. The complete score is not necessary but may be included. All plays are read by BPP's literary personnel led by and including the Literary Manager and Artistic Director.
6. We do not accept e-mail submissions. Scripts will not be returned. Blind submissions are not necessary. Please include all contact information. Plays submitted in previous years will be accepted.
7. The BPP reserves the right not to name a winner and/or name a winner but not commit to a reading or production.

PPF annually presents seven new plays—readings, workshops and productions—during a three-day period. Audiences consist of local playgoers and representatives from theatres nationwide. About the National Ten-Minute Play Contest

Established in 1989, the National Ten-Minute Play Contest remains one of the most enduring and significant means by which the literary staff at Actors Theatre of Louisville connects with American playwrights and is introduced to vibrant new voices for the stage. We consider all submissions for the Heideman Award—a $1,000 cash prize given out each February—as well as for production in the Apprentice/Intern Tens and the Humana Festival of New American Plays.

An annual event that takes place in January, the A/I Tens consist of a bill of 8-10 world premiere ten-minute plays, fully produced at Actors Theatre of Louisville and performed by our Apprentice Company of young actors.

CONTEST GUIDELINES:

• Scripts should be submitted between September 1-November 1 (postmark dates).
• Characters in submitted plays should be in the age range 18-28.
• Each script must be no more than ten pages long. (We start counting pages after the title page and character list, if applicable.) Title page must include the playwright’s name, address, phone number and e-mail address. Each manuscript must be typed and individually bound or stapled.
• Each playwright may submit only one script—send us your best!
• Previously submitted plays, plays that have received an Equity production, musicals, children’s shows, and any unsolicited longer one-act or full-length plays are not accepted and will not be returned nor receive a response. Plays that have received Equity waiver showcase productions are eligible. Playwrights must be citizens or permanent residents of the USA.
• We are unable to accept electronic submissions. Please mail submissions to: National Ten-Minute Play Contest, Actors Theatre of Louisville, 316 West Main Street, Louisville, KY 40202-4218.
• Submissions are limited to the first 500 scripts we receive each year. If your play is received after we’ve hit the 500-script mark, you will be notified. • The volume of scripts submitted hampers our ability to comment individually on each work, so we do not offer criticism.
• All ten-minute plays will be considered for the Heideman Award ($1000)*, as well as for production in the Apprentice/Intern Tens and the Humana Festival of New American Plays.

The Richard Rodgers Awards 2017

Administered by the American Academy of Arts and Letters

These awards, created and endowed by Richard Rodgers in 1978 for the development of the musical theater, subsidize full productions, studio productions, and staged readings by nonprofit theaters in New York City of works by composers and writers who are not already established in this field. The winners are selected by a jury of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

A. REQUIREMENTS AND ELIGIBILITY

1. The term "musical theater" is understood to include musicals, plays with songs, thematic revues, or any comparable work. The submission of innovative and experimental work is encouraged. The work submitted must be of significant length to fill an evening, and it may consist of a group of smaller, related pieces.

2. The jury will consider only completed works. Care should be taken to submit the work in its best possible form as it may not be submitted again, in another year, even if substantially revised.

3. Only one submission by a collaborative group or a sole creator will be accepted. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

4. Works by members of the Academy and previous winners of the production awards are not eligible for consideration. Former winners of Richard Rodgers awards for staged readings or studio productions may submit new works.

5. An applicant whose works in the musical theater have received professional or amateur productions in New York City or out of town is eligible unless, in the judgment of the jury, the applicant has already achieved significant recognition in the field of musical theater through the work submitted or through any previous work. Under special circumstances and at the discretion of the jury, applicants who have achieved recognition in fields outside the musical theater may be eligible. Works which have been produced by professional theater companies before a paying audience are eligible only if such productions received no more than 21 performances by a for- profit company or 50 performances by a nonprofit company.


B. SUBMISSION OF MATERIAL

1. The name(s) of the author(s) must be blocked out on each of the items submitted, with the exception of the application form. Write only the title of the work on the script, plot summary, CD.

2. Entry must include four items:

a) Script with lyrics, preferably with no binders or metal clips. Do not send score, videos, or visuals.

b) Half-page synopsis of the action, and a list of characters.

c) CD must contain at least 45 minutes of music, including a minimum of eight songs, recorded in chronological order. Orchestrations are not necessary; piano and vocals are sufficient. Songs must be in sequence on the CD and each song clearly keyed into the script.

d) Please include a separate track sheet of recorded songs with page numbers indicating where they appear in the script, and specify the total number of minutes recorded.

e) Application form signed by all collaborators in a sealed envelope with the title of the work on the outside. Applicants submitting work which has already been produced must give full information concerning these productions, including programs. A work is not eligible if one of the collaborators is deceased.

3. If the submitted work (or a portion thereof) is an adaptation of material which is not in the public domain, candidates must submit licenses, permissions, or authorizations necessary to permit the work to be produced in conformity with applicable copyright laws. The music must be original.

4. Materials will be returned if a self-addressed, stamped mailer is enclosed. Addresses must be valid for at least six months. The Academy will take all due care of materials, but it cannot be held responsible for their safe return.

5. Applicants will be notified of the jury's decision by March 2017. C. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

1. All rights to the material submitted shall remain the property of the author(s); the Academy will not retain any control over, or rights in, the work after the award production.

2. The decisions of the jury will be final as to eligibility and all other matters.

Snowdance® 10 Minute Comedy Festival 2017

The Snowdance® 10 Minute Comedy Festival is a festival of original comedies that run 10 minutes or less. Submitted scripts will be judged by the Snowdance Selection Committee. A selection of scripts will be chosen for production during the Snowdance Festival in the winter of 2017. These selections will round out a complete performance. Audiences attending Snowdance performances will have the ability to vote for the production they enjoyed the most. The votes will be tallied throughout the five week festival run, and the Snowdance “Best in Snow” will be awarded to the winning playwright after the final performance on March 5, 2017. Cash award of $500.00 to “Best in Snow,” with $200.00 awards to second place and $100 for third place.

February 3 – March 5, 2017 - Run of festival performances.
March 5, 2017 (immediately after final performance) - Announcement of “Best in Snow.”

To enter a script, please follow these steps.

1. Competition is open to original 10 minute or shorter plays free of royalty and copyright restrictions. Submission is considered to be approval to produce the piece without royalty if selected for production in the Snowdance Festival. Musicals, adaptations, and translations will not be considered.
2. Plays must run 10 minutes or less. A rule of thumb - 1 page (8 1/2 x 11) of single spaced, average dialogue will total about 90 seconds. Read it out loud - time it – test it – and re-write if need be.
3. Submissions must be postmarked on or before November 1st 2016.
4. Manuscripts must be on standard 8-1/2” x 11” paper, cleanly typed and securely bound. Scripts should follow standard format. (Check any scriptwriting book in your library)
5. Plays can have a cast of 1 to 5 characters and should be easily staged. Avoid any elaborate set requirements. And remember it is a ‘COMEDY FESTIVAL’.
6. The writer’s name, address, phone number, and e-mail address (if applicable) should be included on the title page and only the title page. The title page should also include a cast list, set requirements, and a 1 to 3 sentence synopsis of the play.
7. Submit one (1) copy of your script.
