Dear Friend in the Theatre,

MITF: Summer has extended the submission deadline for short plays and musicals to June 27. 

MITF: Summer is taking place at the WorkShop Theater's Main Stage and Jewel Box Theaters, 312 W. 36th Street, in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. Details are straightforward:
Dates for the Festival are July 16-August 7, 2016.
We're looking for any kind of short play or musical that fits the guidelines:
* 30 - 60 min. long.
* Easy to produce in a no-frills festival.
* Any genre.
* Both union and non-union plays will be considered.
Scripts with guns as props will not be accepted.
Plays must be sent in Word Document or PDF File. Pages MUST be numbered and script must be in standard playscript format.* Please also include the running time.
Short plays and musicals receive 3 performances, all in the same week (July 24, July 25, and July 26).
Producers have an option to receive a share of the profits, if any.**
There will be a tech rehearsal running 2 times the running time of your show.
The Festival provides the venue (the WorkShop Theater's Main Stage and Jewel Box Theaters), shared scenery (rehearsal cubes, a table, and 4 chairs), front-of-house staff, and a board op (NOT a lighting designer). The rest is up to you! You are 100% responsible for your own production. Shows must be fully produced (off book!).
To submit a project, mark it clearly "MITF: Summer," and let us know if it is a short play or musical. We'll curate the entries as they come in, so you can start working on them as soon as possible. Send your script soon. The deadline is fast approaching!We look forward to your submissions!

What is the Monthly Swap? Well it’s very similar to Lama’s Monthly Question (Our cold reading series of new & bold writing around Lama’s monthly question) BUT this month the question is with a TWIST... We are NOW open for submissions of short plays /Monologues/Poems and songs from ONLY Female writers from the US and England around the question:

WHAT IS YOUR WEAPON?

We will choose pieces that address the question differently from each country!

THEN … We SWAP the artist’s work. On the evening of the event, selected material from the US will be presented in London while selected work from the UK will be presented in NYC at the same day!

PLAYWRIGHTS ON PARK Reading Series

We are currently accepting submissions for the 2016-2017 season of the Playwrights on Park Reading Series at Playhouse on Park in West Hartford, CT.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: July 15.
IMPORTANT INFO:

Playwrights MUST be able to come to West Hartford for the day of the reading. There will be a talkback with the playwright and the cast after the reading. There will be a rehearsal the day of the reading in which attendance by the playwright is optional, but strongly encouraged. Transportation may be provided from NYC or New England locations by the Playhouse.

We will ultimately choose 5-6 readings for the 2016/2017 season. Final selections will be made by late August/early September.

The plays will receive a cast of professional actors and a director and will be presented as a staged reading for a public audience. After the reading, a moderated audience discussion with the actors, the director, and most importantly, the playwright, will give both the Playhouse on Park and the playwright constructive feedback to further develop the playwright's vision for the play.

Playwrights on Park is a new and exciting artistic endeavor for Playhouse on Park. Our mission is to develop and produce original plays and musicals, to foster emerging and established playwrights, and to become a leader in new play development. We aim to help establish the Greater Hartford Area as a premiere destination for the cultivation and exploration of innovative theatrical work.

Attention political playwrights: Call For Entries Mario Fratti-Fred Newman Political Play Contest 2017

The Castillo Theatre sponsors the Mario Fratti-Fred Newman Political Play Contest and reading series bi-annually. The contest is intended to encourage the writing of progressive plays that engage the political/social/cultural questions affecting the world today and/or historical events and issues that impact on our communities.

The contest encourages scripts that experiment with form and seek new ways of seeing and new ways of experiencing theatrical performance. Castillo welcomes scripts from all countries and cultures.

The plays submitted to the Fratti-Newman Political Play Contest may be written in any style, set in any historical time, geographic or imaginary location, contain any number of characters and be of any length. The plays must be in English and cannot be musicals or adaptations. No scripts will be considered that have previously been submitted to this contest, have received a production or won other contests. Only one script per playwright per year will be accepted.

The contest is judged by a team of distinguished theatre artists. The winning script(s) will receive a reading at the Castillo Theatre in New York City during the theatre’s 2017 summer season.

All scripts should be submitted in hard copy and must be accompanied by:

• a statement of the political/social/cultural questions that the script engages (scripts with no accompanying statement will not be considered); 
• a brief synopsis; 
• a character breakdown, including gender, age and ethnic requirements, if any; 
• a 100-word biography of the playwright; 
• a current email address 

Please note:

• Receipt of script will be acknowledged via email. 
• Scripts will not be returned. 
• Castillo does not give critical feedback to playwrights/contestants. 
• Contest winners are required to sign a letter of agreement, which will include, but not be limited to, granting the right for Castillo to produce one or more readings and/or a full production of the winning play.

Yale Repertory Theatre accepts submissions of full-length plays, musicals, translations, and adaptations. All submissions are considered for productions at Yale Rep and for development opportunities with the Binger Center for New Theatre.

Playwrights must submit their work either through established agents or by first sending a letter of inquiry, accompanied by a brief synopsis, cast breakdown, a ten-page dialogue sample, and a résumé. The Literary Office will review these materials and contact playwrights regarding Yale Rep's interest in reading a full manuscript. Yale Rep will not read unsolicited manuscripts.

Submissions are accepted year-round. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if materials are to be returned. Unsolicited manuscripts will not be reviewed.

The 2016 Detroit Fringe Forward Festival, to be held September 15-18 in Detroit, is accepting submissions from Monday, May 30th until Wednesday, July 6th. Please see below for more details and links to submit your work!

Continuing the momentum that produced over 20 shows as part of last year’s Detroit Fringe, the 2016 Fringe Forward Festival will return from Thursday September 15 through Sunday September 18th. Fringe Forward is dedicated to supporting Detroit performers and audiences as they try new things, providing a forum for works that advance the medium beyond the traditional proscenium play and facilitating a weekend of events that celebrates neighbors and artists connecting through the performing arts.

Submission Info:

This year, Fringe Forward will use a juried and lottery system to ensure a cross-section of exemplary performances are presented at the festival. (PRO TIP – FRINGE FORWARD IS ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS NOW THROUGH JULY 6TH!SUBMIT YOUR WORKS BY GOING HERE – https://goo.gl/sTcwTM) There are three ways you can participate in Fringe Forward – by submitting work for consideration in the curated, lottery or registered performances categories.

First, all performances must be submitted for consideration. We are specifically looking for works that feature at least one of the below evaluation criteria:

*fostering artistic experimentation – works in new genres or works that employ progressive media (this can be in terms of content or form or both)

*taking risks – trying things untried and expanding expectations about what performance is and what it can be

*new performances in development

*celebrating facets of our community

*inspiration and organization – while we are not looking for shows that have been staged before, we are looking at your proposal to see why you want to be a part of Fringe Forward and how your work will benefit. Proposals should be clear, passionate and include all of the requested details.

Once all submissions have been received (DON’T FORGET, SUBMIT BY JULY 6TH!) works chosen to be included as Fringe Forward programming will be divided into our three programming categories, curated, lottery and registered performances.

*Curated – 5-10 submissions will be selected for the curated category, chosen by the Fringe Forward Advisory board based on the evaluation criteria above.

*Lottery – All submissions not chosen for the curated category will fall in the lottery category, of which 5-10 submissions will be chosen in a public LOTTERY PARTY in mid July.

(These 10-20 works from both the curated and lottery categories will each receive a small production budget of $300 in addition to 40 percent of their door sales.)

*Registered performance – If you are not chosen for the curated or lottery category but would still like to participate in Fringe Forward, you can request to be a registered performance until July 31st. All registered performances will be asked to pay a $300 fee to cover insurance, utilities, tech time and festival staff, but will keep 100% of their ticket sales.

Professional Development and Awards:

All works chosen for the festival will be offered a chance to participate in a professional development session with professional mentor over the course of your work’s rehearsal and performances as a way to gain feedback about process and increase connections within Detroit’s artistic community. All artists are responsible for creating, staging and marketing their shows, attending your required tech rehearsal and keeping up with all festival production deadlines. All performances will be guaranteed a venue, stage manager, house staff, basic tech needs and inclusion in Fringe Forward 2016 marketing materials. At the end of the festival the “Jury’s Choice” award and “Audience Choice” award will be given to two performances, who will each receive a fully staged spot in CMAP’s 2016-17 programming line-up.

6th Annual Tri-State Theatre Festival

South Street Players (southstreetplayers.org) is seeking short (20 minutes or less), original, one-act plays for its 6th Annual Tri-State Theatre Festival. The event will take place November 4-6, 2016 in Spring Lake, NJ.

The festival, which receives more than 300 plays annually, is committed to presenting the finest and most unique original one-acts written by local playwrights from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The event also serves as an artistic fundraiser, with all proceeds going to SSP to help maintain its commitment to producing high-quality, extremely engaging theatrical experiences for the 2016-17 season… and beyond.

Submission Rules and Process:

Seeking original comedic and dramatic one-act plays from playwrights currently living in the Tri-State area only (NJ, NY and PA).

Plays must be 20 pages or less. Submissions of longer than 20 pages will be declined for consideration.

Plays must be in standard playscript format.

Playwrights may submit more than one play, but please be sure your name and email address is on the title page of each script.

SSP is a family theatre – no excessive swearing, no nudity.

No royalties or payment will be provided to playwrights should his or her play be chosen for the festival.

ELIGIBILITY:

JET encourages all playwrights over 18 to submit their work. JET's programming generally reflects issues of social conscience and human rights both in drama and comedy. Use our past productions as a guide and if you have questions, contact us a 248-788-2900.

Entry must be a full length original work or adaptation with a minimum running time of 85 minutes that has not been published prior to the festival in 2017. Cast size of 7 or less is preferred. Staged readings/workshop productions are not disqualifying factors.

SCRIPTS:

Submit a blind copy of your script, securely bound, typed in standard play format, with pages numbered. Include a list of characters/descriptions, scene breakdown, and a brief synopsis of your play. Your script(s) should be accompanied by a cover letter, including playwright contact information (name, address, phone number, e-mail address) and resume. Musicals must include a demo CD. If applicable, also submit a photocopy of your Dramatists Guild membership card.

The acceptable electronic format is an Adobe PDF file.


Please note that entries that do not comply with our guidelines will not be accepted. If you would like your script returned, please include a SASE. Script evaluations will not be provided.


CONSENT:

The playwright gives the Jewish Ensemble Theatre permission to photocopy scripts for reading/ production purposes. Should your script be selected as one of the finalists, you are encouraged to attend the readings and talkbacks.


The finalists award the Jewish Ensemble Theatre the option to produce any of the finalist plays as part of its main stage season. Finalists must acknowledge the Jewish Ensemble Theatre if/when script is published


AWARDS:

Each of the four finalists will receive a $500 honorarium. No other expenses will be paid.


SELECTION PROCESS:

Each entry is guaranteed a minimum of 2 evaluations. The committee narrows down the entries to 15 – 20, which are then read by the entire committee who selects the finalists.

Crab Fat Seeks Convinced Atheist Writers for Special Issue

Crab Fat Magazine is accepting submissions from convinced atheist writers for a second special issue to be released in July 2016. We seek to curate a collection of thoughtful prose and poetry by people who DO NOT believe in any god(s) and show that atheism goes beyond political, social, and racial barriers. We’re open to a wide variety of work, from “coming out” as an atheist, to the impact atheism has on both personal and professional sides of life, and everything in-between. However, to be clear, we’re not seeking tirades attacking religion with sweeping generalizations.

Crab Fat does not like to censor a writer/artist’s aesthetic or imagination, but there are certain topics that we are simply not interested in. With that said, please DO NOT send prose, poetry, or images that depict child molestation/sex fantasy, rape (unless it’s a vital part of the story and handled with sensitivity, ie–a revenge narrative), gratuitous violence or sex, bestiality, or necrophilia. How long does the evaluation process take?

Le Théâtre Bleu, a non-profit organisation based in Quebec, Canada, is looking for submissions for a 2017 summer production.

What to submit:

• Original comedies between 90 to 120 minutes. Preferably 2 to 5 characters.
• Easy set and simple to produce. Previously produced or not. It doesn’t matter.
• Electronic submissions only.

Financial & artistic arrangements: The chosen play will be translated in French by Bruno Lacroix, president and founder of Le Théâtre Bleu and a member of the Plawrights Guild of Canada, and produced in French.

The winning plawright and the translator will both get to share an equal percentage of box-office revenues of the 2017 production (10%. That is 5% each.)

Afterward, Bruno Lacroix, will do the promotion of that French version to French theaters around the globe. The winning playwright will remain the owner of this version but will agree by contract to give a percentage of the play’s royalties to the translator in perpetuity. That percentage will be discussed and approved by both parties before the translation of the winning play.

The winning play will be annouced in September 2016.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR: Playwrights of all genders and plays of all genres are welcome. Male characters are great, so long as they don’t overshadow/outnumber the female characters.
PUT ANOTHER WAY: IF YOUR SCRIPT DOESN’T PASS THE BECHDEL TEST, IT’S UNLIKELY TO BE A GOOD FIT FOR US.

Fights are a big part of what we do, so their inclusion in scripts is important to us – so long as they serve the story and the characters. We see fights in our shows as similar to songs in a GOOD musical: words fail, so musical characters burst into song. Words fail, so our characters resort to violence.
Finished but not polished is fine. Likewise, one acts are fine if the intent is to expand them, through development, into full-lengths. If you consider the piece complete as-is and aren’t interested in further development, please indicate that when you submit.
And of course the caveat – we typically work in small, black box theatres on limited budgets. A piece with multiple, complex locations and/or more than 10 characters that can’t be easily doubled might not be the best fit for us.

2017 SELECTIONS ANNOUNCED: Winter 2016
Playwrights selected for the Fighting Words program will receive a set of three readings to facilitate the development of their script. Each play will be assigned a director who will take part in the development process from the start. All readings and moderated talk backs are videotaped and given to the playwright to aid with rewrites.

The first reading is internal and is attended by company members and the director; the playwright is invited but not sponsored. The second reading is an advertised public reading; the playwright is invited but not sponsored. The final reading is an advertised public reading with one choreographed fight and a reception following the moderated talk back; the playwright’s travel expenses will be sponsored up to $400 to attend. The playwright is given approximately two months between drafts for revisions with a schedule provided at the time of selection.

What is it you want to say with that play? What perspective do you bring to the piece to make it uniquely yours? And, most importantly, why are you working on it in the first place? This 6-week seminar forces you to examine all of these questions in order to approach every play with the goal of telling this story right now and for this reason.

By charting the development of the hero and opponent, their manifestation within the physical world, and the moral arguments that explode for the audience by journey’s end, you will develop a scientific vocabulary and collection of tools to examine your plays, with the aim of developing confident, taut work and a strongly articulated vision for a rewrite.

Quannapowitt Players of Reading, MA are seeking one-act play submissions from New England playwrights for their New Works Festival entitled “Suburban Holidays 5,” scheduled for November/December of 2016.

Seen “The Nutcracker” too many times? Can you recite the speeches by every ghost in “A Christmas Carol” by heart? It’s time for some new holiday traditions!

“Suburban Holidays 5” explores the theme of the holiday season (in whatever form that means for the playwright). Though we receive many winter holiday themed submissions (Christmas, New Year’s, etc.) all other holidays are welcomed. Have a Valentine’s Day play? We want to read it! Kwanzaa? Send it along! Purim? We’d love to see it!

* Plays will be fully produced, with a full set, costumes, props, sound cues and rep lighting. The sets will be simple, but you are not limited to minimalistic set pieces.

* One-act plays of any length will be considered, but plays of between 10 and 25 minutes are most likely to be accepted.

* Playwrights may submit one play only. If more than one play is sent, then none of your submissions will be considered.

* Preference is given to New England playwrights (MA, CT, NH, ME, VT). If you are not a resident of New England, your play will be considered, but we do like to offer opportunities to our New England neighbors.

* Plays must be submitted electronically in MS Word or PDF format, written in standard play format to the festival Producer/Director, Patrick Cleary at patrickjamescleary@gmail.com . Paper copies of plays will not be accepted.

* Plays must be the original works of the playwrights and unpublished at the time of production. Preference is given to unproduced works, but works with limited production runs will be considered

* There are no restrictions on cast size. In fact, we welcome large cast plays! Original musicals will also be considered, though musical accompaniment will be restricted to a keyboardist, should a musical be produced.

The Ingram New Works Lab is an artistic home for playwrights and a fertile environment for the creation of great new plays. During monthly Lab meetings in Nashville, playwrights share and develop a new work based on artist-determined goals and receive transformative support and project guidance from dedicated staff. In addition to the monthly meetings, each playwright will participate in a week-long New Works Symposium in January 2017 with the recipient of the Ingram New Works Fellowship. Each playwright will be expected to work toward the creation of a new play that will be presented in a staged reading featured at the Ingram New Works Festival in May 2017.

Nashville Rep will award up to four residencies in the New Works Lab. Each playwright who accepts the residency will commit to developing a new play from its earliest stages to a full draft and must be available for all lab, symposium, rehearsal and festival dates.

THE HELEN-JEAN PRIZE 2016

This prize is offered as a memorial to honor the memory of the mothers of the founders. Having been in the “theater business” for a number of years, we are well aware of how discouraging it can be to submit plays and to receive no positive feedback. At times it seems that all our efforts, expectations and dedication are wasted.

Our prize is intended to identify dramatic talent, to give it a degree of acknowledgment, and to provide encouragement to continue. The prize is awarded based upon written scripts. The prize will, we hope, provide talented (struggling?) playwrights with some needed encouragement when any success seems impossibly far away.

SUBMISSIONS:
The judges will accept only the first 75 submissions for each season; the cutoff date for each season is posted at the top of this website. A prize will be given four times a year, once each season. This means that all plays submitted within a season, Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter will be judged as a distinct group. First place winners will receive $35 and a certificate, second place winners will receive $10 and a certificate, third place winners will receive $5 and a certificate. Honorable mentions will only receive a certificate. The award is admittedly nominal. However, it may help you get your play produced in the future. And it should make you feel better about your work.

There is no fee to submit a play. Submissions are by email only. You must submit a word document or PDF file of your work.

Submissions will be as either rejected or entered into a pool of potential winners. The final winner will be determined at the end of each submission period. Winning plays and playwrights, with permission, will be identified.

If desired, we will provide a brief evaluation as to defects and/or suggestions for improvement of rejected plays. Let us know, in your submission, if you desire this. Be warned; we will be tough. We are VERY candid.

Optional Fees:

$7 for a detailed review
$10 for a detailed analysis of your play plus suggestions for improvements

Fees are payable via PayPal, credit card or check. Indicate in your submission e-mail if you wish to receive a review and how you will pay for it, you will then be contacted with the payment information.

Reviews may be quoted or used in any way desired by the author.

The judges do not intend to produce any of the prize-winning plays, except in highly unusual conditions.

WHAT WE WILL ACCEPT:

• Please submit one play per season, multiple submissions will be ignored.
• Plays previously produced, or entered in other contests, are acceptable. 
• Plays must have a widespread audience appeal.
• Plays must not contain any profanity, blasphemy, or vulgarity.
• Theatre of the Absurd plays are not acceptable. 
• Plays may be on any subject as long as they show talent and effort.
• Do not send any music. The lyrics alone are sufficient
• Plays should be in the English language only and be presented in play format.
• Play must be free from grammatical errors. Use spell and grammar check please.
• Plays with editing errors will be judged harshly. 
• If scripts are more than 60 pages, send us the first half, if we desire the second half we will request it.
• Synopsis and autobiographical information are not necessary.
• Your play should be presented with regard to realistic requirements which can be met by Community Theatre with regard to cast, scenery, sets, lighting, sound effects, etc. Community theater groups often operate with limited budgets.

Each submission should have the name of your play in the subject line, it is also appreciated if the file name is the name of the play. Include your contact information, and a sentence or two identifying your intention. Tell us what you hope to accomplish with your play.

The Cloverdale Playhouse's Page to Stage Playwriting Contest is an annual call for previously unproduced, full-length scripts. 2016 Submissions will be accepted between May 15 and June 15th via pagetostage@cloverdaleplayhouse.org.

The Artistic Committee will read every entry "blind" - that is, with the writer's name hidden - then

About the Play
- Non-musical, full-length plays for writers 19 years and older.

-Non-musical, one-act plays for writers 18 years and younger. Must have parent’s or guardian’s written permission. All other requirements are the same.

- No limit on number of characters - No restrictions on subject

- Submitted scripts must be unpublished and must not have received a full production. The Cloverdale Playhouse reading is to be a world premiere.

- No translations or adaptations of previously published works

- Script must have no indication of the author’s name on any page or in the file properties (this allows readers to be totally objective).

About the Reading
- Winner will be notified by August 1, 2016

- Members of the Cloverdale Playhouse Artistic Committee will judge the submissions and select a winner. The judges’ decision will be final.

- The winning play will be read at the Cloverdale Playhouse by actors from the community on September 12, 2016.

- Publicity for the event will be handled by the Cloverdale Playhouse. The winning playwright may be asked to participate in preparing the event and any media/marketing relating to the event.

While all reasonable care will be taken, the Cloverdale Playhouse cannot accept responsibility for loss of, or damage to, submitted scripts.

The Cloverdale Playhouse and judges will destroy all electronic script submissions after the close of the program.

Incomplete submissions will be ineligible for inclusion in the program.

THE LESLIE SCALAPINO AWARD FOR INNOVATIVE WOMEN PERFORMANCE WRITERS

The Leslie Scalapino Award recognizes the importance of exploratory approaches and an innovative spirit in writing for performance. You can learn more about the winners of our first and second cycles, Joyelle McSweeney's Dead Youth, or The Leaks, and Khadijah Queen's Non-Sequitur, by clicking "Past Winners and Runners Up" above. Last cycle we received many submissions and a wonderful range of work.

The Prize: The winner will receive a $2,500 cash prize, print publication of the winning text by Litmus Press, a staged reading of the piece in New York this fall, by Fiona Templeton's company The Relationship; and a full production of the work in the following year. The award is biennial.

The Call: Full guidelines, including timeline and instructions for online submission of materials will be announced in early May 2016, with a deadline in late May or early June. Please read the guidelines carefully.

We are looking for a full-length work for live performance by a woman writer with an inquiring approach to language and content. The poetic practice of Leslie Scalapino was interdisciplinary, including photography, plays, performance, and collaboration with dance and music. We would like to honor this aspect of her work in the award.

While the principal focus for the award is on innovative writing for performance, competitive submissions may consider a range of approaches to innovation in performance, including but not limited to integrated experimentations with language, gesture, movement, sound, visual art / vision, site / location and/or activist practice. The writer should demonstrate some experience in the discipline, materials or medium involved. The submitted work should not have been produced or published prior to the Award production and publication in fall 2017.

Applicants should have had no more than 3 productions of their work, as the award is intended to open up opportunities, although it is not limited to emerging writers. The Award for Innovative Women Playwrights intends to support new writing by female-identified people, inclusive of transwomen. The prize is open to international submissions in English.

3. A further single page of work statement, to include a) a summary of the work, and b) a description of your approach. Please be brief and to the point.

One-Act Play Writing Competition

The Elite Theatre Company’s 2016 One-Act Play Writing Competition offers North American playwrights the opportunity to submit for judging no more than one (1) one-act play with a running time of no more than 30 minutes each. There will be up to 5 winners; each winner may have their one-act play(s) produced on stage by Elite Theatre Company in 2017, for a run of up to 12 performances.

(ETC reserves the right to produce the one-acts at any venue during the calendar year.)

To be accepted into the competition, one-act play scripts must:

1. Be written by a U.S. or Canadian playwright;

2. Be original, unproduced and unpublished;

3 Be written in generally accepted play script format;

4. Have a running time of not more than 30 minutes (under 20 minutes is recommended);

5. Be a comedy, drama, mystery, thriller or a monologue (no musicals or children’s plays will be accepted); and

6. Be received between March 1, 2016 and May 31, 2016

ONLY THE FIRST 100 SCRIPTS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR JUDGING.
Scripts not in compliance will not be accepted for judging. Playwrights will be notified via e-mail only when their script has been received.

It is recommended that the play have single or unit sets; no more than six (6) characters; and not require complicated costuming, sets, props or special effects. These are recommendations only and will not disqualify a play from the competition.

Judging
The judges are comprised of qualified playwrights, theatrical directors, producers or theater educators.

The Literary Manager of The Elite Theatre Company and the Judges shall have sole discretion over the manner in which the plays are judged, and their determination of the winners will be final.

Winner Notification
Winners of the competition shall be notified by e-mail or mail by October 15, 2016. Winners may make minor corrections and changes to their script before rehearsals begin in December, 2016. Additional consultations may take place between the winning playwrights, ETC’s Artistic Director and Festival Producer before rehearsals and again before performances.

2017 One-Act Festival
By submitting a script for judging, the playwright gives permission to Elite Theatre Company to exclusively produce and perform the play during the calendar year of 2017, if chosen by the judges to be a finalist, for up to 12 performances. Each finalist playwright shall be paid $100 before the first performance of the play.

Playwright agrees to give Elite Theatre Company the right to produce the play as a World Premiere, and that other performances or staged readings of the play prior to ETC’s 2017 One-Act Festival are not permitted and will disqualify the play from production.

Determination of the order of plays, directors, and production staff for ETC’s 2017 One-Act Festival will be made solely by ETC’s Artistic Director and/or Festival Producer. Winning playwrights are encouraged to attend a performance of their play. Two (2) complimentary tickets will be given to each winning playwright to attend any performance. Transportation and lodging will not be provided by ETC.

Seeking ten-minute comedies about politics for the second biennial Dewey Decimal Festival

DEWEY 2: ELECTION EDITION - An evening of staged readings of short comedies about politics, public and private, to benefit the Friends of the Chappaqua Library.

Wow! What a year we're having. Election day is on the horizon, but we want to take a break from all that and talk about... politics!

Politics! They’re everywhere: in government, internationally, in the office, the local elementary school, on a desert island, even in the bedroom. Gender politics, union politics, jungle politics -- You name it, if there's arguing, negotiating, speechifying, horse trading, posturing, pollsters, posters, backroom deals, voting. and/or compromising involved we want to hear about it. And nobody says it has to be democratic - put three siblings in the back seat of a car and who wins?

We’re looking for a few good short comedies, to be presented by local actors in an evening of rehearsed staged readings, Saturday October 22nd 2016, in the 200-seat Chappaqua Library Theatre, as a fundraiser for the Friends of the Chappaqua Library.

Does your play have the right stuff?

What Do We Want?

1. COMEDIES ONLY. We like to laugh.

2. Plays should run about ten minutes (12 pages max, shorter is probably better).

3. Plays can have from 2 to 4 characters. Let us know if the genders are flexible.

4. No references to any current politician please! Historic and fictional figures are fine. They might even have some vague relationship to current events.

5. We are not looking for heavy-handed political satire. Be creative in your interpretation of the theme.

6. This will be a staged reading, so the play can be set anywhere and the characters can be most anything. However, we will shy away from plays with a surfeit of stage directions.

7. No children's plays are likely to be chosen.

8. No musicals. No monologues.

9. This is a family-friendly festival. Keep the “extra-adult” content suggested but not overt and it's fine. We won’t consider any play that includes offensive language, gun violence (ray guns are OK), or characters using banned substances.

10. Local playwrights are especially encouraged to submit.

• Plays will be judged on their own merits. Do NOT attach anything else to your submission (reviews, resume, your favorite bumper sticker, etc). 
• Previously produced work is welcome, as is new work.

How Are the Votes Counted?

1. Plays will be judged based on many parameters including creative interpretation of the theme, actual expression of the theme, score on the metric funniness scale, irrational hotly-debated opinion, and brute force. Also we need to create a balanced evening. We already know we will have many more excellent play candidates than we can include in one evening. Thanks for sharing your work!

2. No critique of plays can be provided.

3. A list of Semi-Finalists will be posted in June on the Friends of the Chappaqua Library website, and on our Facebook page. Only the Semi-Finalists will be contacted directly.

4. All Semi-Finalist plays will be read outloud in informal summer "Readers Circles" by local theatre enthusiasts, to further narrow the plays down to the Finalists round.

5. Finalists will be contacted directly, and the list will be posted on the Friends webpage and on Facebook.

6. The winning plays will be chosen from the Finalist round, and the Festival lineup will be announced by the end of August.


What Are the Winners’ Duties?

1. By submitting your play, you grant permission, if it is chosen, for local actors to perform it in up to two staged readings in the Chappaqua Library Theatre (capacity 200) in October 2016.

2 Playwrights whose plays are selected, will be acknowledged in publicity and programs, and will receive an honorarium of $5.

3. All playwrights whose work is in the Festival will be invited to attend, and should they do so, be plied with sugary snacks.

Any More Voting?

Yes! The audience will vote on their favorite plays, and the Audience Choice winner will receive bragging rights and a $25 honorarium.

The Arch and Bruce Brown Foundation Playwriting Competition

The Arch and Bruce Brown Foundation holds yearly literary competitions for works that concern LGBT (lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender) life and that are based on, or inspired by, a historical person, culture, event or work of art.The 2016 playwriting competition will be open to submissions from March 1 through May 31, 2016. All manuscripts must be electronically submitted and received by midnight on May 31. (No hard copies sent by postal mail will be accepted.)

Only full-length works (dramas, comedies, musicals, screenplays) will be considered. One entry per author, please. Scripts must be original and in English. All must concern lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or genderqueer life and be based on, or directly inspired by, a historical person, culture, work of art, or event.

There is no entry fee. Prizes are as follows: First Prize, $3,000; Second Prize, $1,500; Honorable Mentions, $500. Prizewinners will be announced before the end of the year.

To be eligible for the Foundation’s 2016 competition:
Your script must involve lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or genderqueer characters and/or themes.
Your script must portray a historical period or incident. The past must be central, not incidental, to the work. (For more information on the meaning of “historical,” go to the “What Is Historical?” page.)
You must submit a brief statement, no longer than one page, describing how the script fulfills these requirements. This statement should explain the time period and historical issues involved.
If your work has been produced in any form (workshop, staged reading, or full production), your submission must also include a synopsis of the work’s production history. Works that have never been produced are welcome.

If these conditions of eligibility are not met, your submission will not be read.

When submitting:
Manuscripts should be in standard play or screenplay format, using a 12-point or larger font, and saved as a .doc, .docx, or PDF.
The first page must include the title and your name, as well as your own email address, mailing address, and phone number. Even if you are represented by an agent, please provide your personal contact information.
Page numbers should appear on every manuscript page.
In the case of musicals, audio segments should be sent separately as MP3 files and limited to a total of 10 minutes. We will request more if necessary.

PICK OF THE VINE – Season 15 (2017)

Little Fish Theatre is accepting scripts for our 15th Annual PICK OF THE VINE short play production to be presented in January-February 2017.

There will be a $50 flat fee royalty payment to playwrights per play produced.

Submission Guidelines:

1. Only ONE play may be submitted per playwright. There is no submission fee.

2. Submissions accepted starting May 1, 2016. Submission deadline is May 31, 2016.

3. Submissions via email only. Email submissions (in .pdf form only) to LFTpickofthevine@gmail.com

4. Plays must include contact info (name, phone number, email address, home city and state, country) on the cover sheet.

5. Plays will require no more than 10 actors.

6. Plays will run no more than 15 minutes, no exceptions.
