University of Miami Online New Play Festival

With a goal to provide online performance opportunities to our Conservatory BFA Theatre majors and our BA Theatre majors while also providing the learning experience for them to interact with new work and playwrights, the University of Miami is seeking short plays to be produced as part of a series of online works in the Spring semester of 2021. The Theatre Arts Department normally produces 4 productions a semester in two on-campus theaters. However, due to the restrictions and health concerns of COVID 19, we hope to expand our students learning opportunities by working on pieces which have been written, conceived, or re-conceived for an online Zoom platform. In return, we hope that writers will see the constraints of the format as a way to tell their stories in a different and unique manner while benefiting from working with the department’s very talented and disciplined students.


The Plays:

* Should run ideally 10 to 30 minutes

* Should require approximately 4 to 10 actors

* Should ideally be performed with limited Zoom production elements

* Will be rehearsed for 1 to 2 weeks and and taped on Zoom or similar platform

* Will be directed by UM Faculty or professional guest directors

* Will be provided with a UM Student Stage Manager

* Will require the online participation of the playwright with rewrites encouraged

* Should be submitted as PDFs with title and author and contact info

Submissions will be accepted thru Dec.20, 2020. Playwrights may make multiple submissions. Making a submission does not guarantee a reply. If we are interested in producing your play we will contact the playwright. A $50 stipend will be awarded to each playwright in the festival.
