Criminal Queerness Festival 2020 seeks plays

web site

The National Queer Theater is now accepting full-length play submissions for the second Criminal Queerness Festival, which will take place in New York City during June of 2020.

Last year’s inaugural festival was created in partnership with WorldPride, Stonewall Community Foundation, and Immigration Equality. It was recommended by The New York Times, The Advocate, and Thrillist as a ‘must-see’ for WorldPride attendees.

Across the world, governments have silenced queer voices by criminalizing LGBTQ lives. The Criminal Queerness Festival features plays that stage LGBTQ experiences in those countries where same-sex activity is illegal, transgender and non-binary identities are not legally recognized, or the LGBTQ community is censored.

Next year, four plays will be selected and given a full production in New York City. The plays will be performed in a festival format with directors and actors from National Queer Theater. The winning playwrights will be awarded a stipend of $500 USD each.

Submission Criteria

Works that address the lives of LGBTQ people outside of the United States, written by playwrights from or living in those countries, will be considered.

Plays must not have been previously produced in the United States. Eligible playwrights, however, may currently reside in the United States. U.S.-born children of immigrants are also welcome to submit.

How to Submit

Playwrights should submit the following package to submissions@nationalqueertheater.org with the subject line CRIMINAL QUEERNESS SUBMISSION. Anonymous submissions, or submissions using an alias are welcome.

The email must include:

Playwright’s email address, country of origin, and country of residence

A character breakdown

A play script (pages must be numbered) in PDF attached

Submissions must be received by 11:00 PM EST (23:00) on October 11, 2019.
