UPCOMING WRITING WORKSHOPS: Strengthening Your Process and Finding Your First Draft Workshops at Primary Stages ESPA

Primary Stages ESPA has two new workshops coming up! Whether you’re working on a new play or just need a weekend dedicated to your craft, we’ve got the new workshop for you.

Instructor: Crystal Skillman (Writer, Open, Geek, Mary and Max)

NEXT WEEKEND!
Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27
12:00 – 5:00pm

In any work, you’re at your most clear when you can drive your own process to strengthen your craft and deepen your story. Playwright Crystal Skillman will share her personal writing process for structure and drama, helping you figure out how to strengthen your writing while keeping true to your voice.

This workshop might be for you if you:
  • Want to better guide your own writing process and analyze your craft regardless of content.
  • Are looking to better understand playwriting as a craft and how to harness your voice.
In this workshop:
  • Through a series of in-class exercises and discussions, deepen how you guide your own journey while writing and how to better dissect feedback.
  • Explore how the elements of drama work in your writing.
  • Discover dynamic theatrical ways to strengthen the message of any story you write, why you’re telling it, and how to relate it to the world today.
  • Do probing exercises on day 1 to generate new ideas and pick one of these ideas to explore in depth.
  • On day 2, apply your new idea to exercises including cause and effect, the relationship between language and action, and strengthening your dramatic question.
You’ll leave this workshop with:
  • An understanding of how to lead your own process, and the ability to strengthen your beats, analyze scenes for their strengths, harness dramatic action, and discover why you are writing – for this and any play you work on.
Instructor: Abe Koogler (Obie-winning Writer, Fulfillment Center at MTC)

Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 8
11:00am – 3:00pm

Sometimes the hardest part of writing a new play is simply starting it. In this 2-day intensive, you will begin and make substantial progress on a brand-new play.

This workshop might be for you if you:
  • Have an idea that you would like to explore in an open and welcoming environment.
  • Want to start a new play, but feel stuck.
In this workshop you will:
  • Use an intuitive approach to dramatic structure, inspiring an organic writing process that bypasses the critical brain.
  • Start and work on your new play using a combination of in-class exercises, concentrated bursts of writing, and feedback sessions.
By the end of this workshop you will have:
  • Several scenes of a new play and the momentum to continue.
