THE THEATER COLLECTIVE is seeking submissions for Sugartown Shorts

web site

THE THEATER COLLECTIVE is seeking submissions for Sugartown Shorts, a play festival featuring site-specific bookstore plays to be held June 28th-30th at Spoonbill & Sugartown Booksellers (99 Montrose).

The Theater Collective is a cooperative artistic project that produces theatrical works by and about underrepresented and misrepresented people in society. We understand the necessity of commercializing such works in order to break barriers outside of our cultural echo chambers. We bring not a new definition to inclusion, but the true definition - including all and creating a dialogue in which we can grow and better understand each other; this first and foremost involves uplifting the voices and stories of women, people of color, individuals with physical disabilities, LGBTQ+, immigrants, and more. The Theater Collective is dedicated to providing theatre that explores sexuality, gender, race, religion, politics, and all things that formulate culture in an accurate and progressive way.

We are excited to team up with Spoonbill & Sugartown Booksellers for our first short play festival! The festival itself will take place over the course of three days at 99 Montrose Street in Bushwick. We aim to create an immersive theatrical experience by having all of the plays be set in a bookstore to allow for an organic, real-time experience.

Submission guidelines:

  • Plays must be no more than 10-12 minutes run time in length
  • Submissions must be set in a bookstore
  • Submissions can not contain any large props and should utilize minimum tech and/or lighting if necessary

We are selecting a total of 12 short plays for the festival. Each night of the festival will feature four plays. Audiences from each night will vote to determine their favorite play. The three winners will receive a prize package, including a gift card to Spoonbill & Sugartown Booksellers, 2 free tickets to a play produced by The Theater Collective, and a cash prize of $20.

The Theater Collective and Spoonbill are NOT responsible for conducting castings and rehearsals for the plays, but we will provide one day for tech rehearsal on Sunday, June 24th at the bookstore.

To submit, please e-mail a copy of your script and brief artist statement to thetheatercollective@gmail.com

THERE IS NO SUBMISSION FEE! DEADLINE TO SUBMIT IS MAY 23RD
