The Furnace Festival Applications

The Furnace Festival is a workshop forum for incendiary new plays, developed in residence at The Center at West Park. Participants are given one week in the Center’s 60 seat Balcony Theater, a small production stipend, and up to 20 additional hours of free rehearsal space to forge a new play in the fiery heat of New York in August, culminating in two workshop performances on Friday and Saturday nights.

All tickets to the Furnace Festival are just $10 and include an ice cold refreshment to help you beat the heat.

The Center at West Park’s Balcony Theater is located on the second floor of the historic landmark West Park Presbyterian Church at 165 W 86th Street in Manhattan. Please note that the Balcony Theater does not have A/C or an elevator and is not ADA accessible.


APPLY NOW FESTIVAL RESIDENCY PACKAGE

Participation in the Furnace Festival includes:

One week in residence at the Center’s Balcony Theater, 10am-10pm Monday-Saturday, 6-10pm Sunday. Performances on Friday and Saturday at 8pm. Load out on Sunday evening. Weeks available are: July 30-Aug 5, Aug 6-12, Aug 13-19, and Aug 20-26.

Up to 20 hours of additional rehearsal time at the Center from July 9 through August 26. Hours may be used 10am-10pm Mondays-Saturdays and 6pm-10pm on Sundays.

$100 production stipend, paid by check to Lead Artist or company at the end of the residency.
Ticketing, including online and in-person box office provided by the Center.

Complimentary cold refreshments provided by the Center to each ticket buyer.

Placement for two 11″x17″ show posters in the Center’s display cases on 86th & Amsterdam (posters designed and printed by Lead Artist).


APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN

Applications for the Furnace Festival are due Monday, June 10, 2018 at noon.

Accepted participants will be notified by Friday, June 29.

Please Note: The Furnace Festival is for new plays. New scripts should be world premiers (not including staged readings) and adaptations of existing texts should include significant original material. Performances of published plays and lightly edited classical texts are not accepted.

Lead artists are responsible for hiring all performers and members of the production/creative team, including sound/light board operators, and are responsible for all production and marketing expenses beyond what is included in the residency package. Lead artists must provide their own insurance to cover their rehearsals and performances (Volunteer Accident and/or General Commercial Liability, as applicable).

Maximum run time for each play is 90 minutes without intermission or 120 minutes including a 15-minute intermission.

Application should include:

Script sample. Up to ten page sample that you feel gives a sense of the content and style of your piece. PDF or Word preferred.

Development History/Goals. A one page document that outlines the developmental history of the project and your goals for the Furnace Festival residency. PDF or Word preferred.
Resume or narrative biographies for up to three artists (up to one page per person) participating in this project. PDF or Word preferred.

Photo and or video media samples for the submitted work or another representative work by the lead artist. This can be links to up to five minutes of video or audio, and/or a series of up to five still images. Images and links should be embedded/pasted in a PDF or Word document. Include the password if any linked materials are password protected.

Any scheduling conflicts in July and August.
