JS&P 2017-18 Submission Guidelines

The winner of Joining Sword & Pen 2017-18 will receive the Margaret W. Martin Award:

• The winning script will be workshopped through Fighting Words in 2017.
• The winning script will be produced as part of Babes With Blades’ 2018-19 Season.
• The winning playwright will receive a $1000 cash prize.

U.S. and International submissions accepted.

In order for their scripts to be considered, playwrights must observe and adhere to ALL of the following SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS.

1. Please email your submission in a PDF file to Delia Ford:
swordandpen@babeswithblades.org.

IMPORTANT: This will be a BLIND SUBMISSION PROCESS. Your email submission should contain two separate attachments:

a) Your cover page. INCLUDE the play’s title, playwright’s name, and full contact information (name, phone numbers, email, mailing address). 

b) Your script. INCLUDE a list of characters, and the page number where the contest’s image is incorporated. DO NOT INCLUDE ANY contact information, of any kind, in the body of your script. An author’s identity will only be revealed to the ensemble once a selection has been made.

2. Submissions are due NO LATER than March 9, 2017. By submitting a script, you are agreeing to adhere to the deadlines on the workshop and production schedule.

3. All submissions must be new, original works, inspired by the artwork that is the focus of the contest. Previously written, workshopped, published or performed submissions will not be considered and we will not contact you. Please do not insert the contest image into an existing script.

4. The moment depicted in the inspirational image must be physically dramatized/incorporated into the play. We want to (literally) perform that moment on stage. Please include the page number of your script where the contest’s image is depicted in your submission email.

Please note: the models in the inspirational images are intended as prompts, to provide an emotional starting point for your reference. You are NOT required to incorporate those specific people, body types, races, ages, etc. into your script – rather, take the moment depicted and make it your own.

5. Only FULL LENGTH submissions will be accepted: at least 60 pages (75-120 minutes) in length. Do not send incomplete submissions, excerpts, or a synopsis. They will be rejected.

6. Please include a list of characters. Both all-female and mixed-gender casts will be considered, but women must be in most/all of the primary roles, and women must be featured in most/all of the combat.

7. Scripts submitted will be considered the original creations of the authors, not Works for Hire. The author will retain all copyright rights and privileges granted thereto. If a winning script is subsequently published, we ask authors to note “Babes With Blades Theatre Company” as the original producing company.

8. Please let us know in your submission email where you heard about JS&P.

Additional Considerations

1. Physical conflict is a big part of what we do, so the inclusion of fights is important as long as they serve the story and the characters. Quantity is not key – quality is.

2. We typically perform in black box theatres on limited budgets, so less is often more. Scripts that require fewer than 12 actors and uncomplicated/limited scenery tend to work best for us.

SPOOKTACULAR seeks ten-minute plays

Dear Friend in the Theatre,

Whether you've thought about doing a short play in New York but have never tried, or if you're a regular at such events around town, please give a thought to producing a show in MITF:Fall's Short Play Lab. Not only do you rub shoulders with your fellow short-play playwrights, but you get to showcase your work to people you don't know yet. The rules for submitting to the Short Play Lab are easy-peasy:

• Deadline is October 15. We would love to see Halloween-themed plays, but all plays that fit the criteria listed below will be considered. Notification will be soon after submission, depending on number of submissions. The sooner you get your script in, the more time you have to prepare. Get that script in pronto!
• Plays should be 1 - 10 pp. in standard playscript format.* (The shorter the better; shorter plays get priority.) Include a title page, as the first page of the script, with your contact info (only means of contact is by email). 
• Submit scripts in a MS Word document or PDF file. 
• You produce the play whether or not you live in New York. The SPL provides the theatre. This Lab will take place at The WorkShop Theater's Jewel Box Theater, 312 W.36th Street, NYC.
• Productions must be non-union: no showcases please! (And no Equity waivers, either.)
• Keep production values to a minimum: costumes and hand props are okay. We provide rehearsal cubes, chairs, and a table. You can't leave your stuff in the theatre overnight.
• Scripts requiring the use of guns are not accepted. 
• Lit cigarettes and herbal cigarettes are not permitted. E-cigarettes are fine.
• We provide a board op, box office, and venue management.
• There are no fees. The SPL keeps the door. 
• Tickets are $20. Each playwright and director gets to watch his/her show for free. There are no other comps.
• There will be a tech rehearsal in the daytime on Saturday, Oct 29. The production dates are Saturday, October 29 - Sunday, October 30.
• Every play gets 2 performances, 1 on Sat. and 1 on Sun. Each play will be part of 1 of 2 programs: Program A or Program B, but not both. Program A takes place at 7 pm Sat. and 4 pm Sun. Program B takes place at 9 pm Sat. and 2 pm Sun. 
• We don't do staged readings. Be off-book, please! Plays not off-book during tech will be removed from the line-up. 
• THE MOST POPULAR PRODUCTION IN EACH PROGRAM RECEIVES A CASH PRIZE OF $75. Winners are determined by polling patrons after the performance. Playwrights, directors, and cast cannot vote for their own play. We reserve the right to break ties.

*12 pt Times Roman; character names in the middle on their own line; line spaces between speeches and between speeches and stage directions; indented stage directions.

The SPL is a lot of fun and a good way to see your work on its feet in a supportive environment. It's also a great way to see actors and directors at work, so you can recruit people for later productions.

Episcopal High School Seeks Musical Theatre Submissions

The theatre department at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA is considering producing a new work for their late winter musical.

Submissions are welcome from musical theatre writers across the country. Royalties, as well as travel/room/board to see production, are provided.

There are no content requirements, but writer(s) must be willing to work with production team to address any language/situational issues.

Shows must:
1) Be full length.
2) Fit a cast of 25+.
3) Be completed (no partial scripts/scores)
4) Have full (or nearly full) demo tracks.

Native Voices seeks full-length plays

Native Voices is currently accepting submissions of full-length plays (60+ pages) by Native American writers addressing all themes and topics.

2017 Playwrights Retreat and Festival of New Plays

The retreat and festival brings artists to Los Angeles to work on 3–5 plays through a rigorous directorial and dramaturgical commitment for 8–10 days in May/June. The retreat culminates in public presentations of the plays at the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles and La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego. Selected playwrights receive directorial and dramaturgical support as well as an honorarium; out-of-town artists receive roundtrip airfare plus lodging in Southern California.

Selection Process: Full-length plays (60+ pages) received by October 21, 2016 will be read and evaluated. A select number of playwrights will be invited to submit formal proposals detailing their developmental goals should their play be chosen for the short list. Scripts will then be sent to a committee of nationally recognized theatre artists for further evaluation. With their help, Native Voices selects up to five plays for the Playwrights Retreat and Festival of New Plays. Playwrights will be notified in January 2017.

A Note About the Native Voices Distance Dramaturgy Process

Months prior to residencies at the Playwrights Retreat and Festival of New Plays, selected playwrights participate in dramaturgical conversations with an assigned director and dramaturg. Workshops with these creative teams and a cast of professional actors commence once the playwright arrives on-site. It is important to note that these conversations and workshops are playwright driven, allowing the writer to shape his/her own developmental path. Selected playwrights should be prepared to dedicate adequate time to this process prior to arriving on-site.

All submissions must conform to a standard play-script format (one-inch margins, #12 Times or Courier font, all pages numbered).


Include a title page with full contact information (mailing address, phone numbers, e-mail address) and a draft or revision date.


Include a character breakdown at the beginning of your script.


Provide a biography of 75–100 words. Please label attachment as follows: Bio_Author’s Last Name, First Initial (Example: Bio_Doe, J.doc).


Provide a press ready photo of at least 300dpi. Please label attachment as follows: Photo_Author’s Last Name, First Initial (Example: Photo_Doe, J.doc).

FIRST FLIGHT New Play Festival

The FIRST FLIGHT New Play Festival is one of the premiere new play development festivals in Indie Theatre. Each play selected to participate in the festival received 6 hours of rehearsal time over the course of one week, culminating in a public reading of the play for a supportive audience.

The upcoming Open Submission Season for the 2017 First Flight Festival begins Wednesday September 15th, 2016 and closes Saturday October 15th, 2016 at 11:59 PM EST

2017 Jewish Plays Project Season

Artists can submit projects to be for considered for the Jewish Playwriting Contest, our competition for full-length plays dealing with contemporary Jewish themes; for OPEN: Festival of New Jewish Theater at the 14th Street Y; and other developmental and advocacy opportunities as they arise.

To date, the JPP has advanced 34 new plays, 18 of which have gone on to production in New York, Boston, London, Detroit, Tel Aviv and around the US (see www.jewishplaysproject.org/success for more). Together with the OPEN Festival, the JPP has featured some of the country’s most exciting next-generation artists (Yehuda Hyman, Daniella Topol, Robert Askins, Brooke Berman, Sarah Gancher, MJ Kaufman, Irene Sankoff and David Hein, Lauren Feldman, Jonathan Caren, Marc Bruni, Resident Director Benjamin Kamine, and tons of others).

IMPORTANT NOTE: SUBMISSIONS ARE OPEN TO ARTISTS OF ALL BACKGROUNDS, DENOMINATIONS, FAITHS, CREEDS, RELIGIONS and other IDEALS. We believe that Jewish identity and culture are specific manifestations of universal human cravings for spiritual, ethical, moral and worldly joy. “Matrilineal descent” is neither important nor necessary.

CONTENT PREFERENCES: The JPP seeks plays that find the intersection between Jewish identity and global self.

We want to look at the places where Jewish ideas, traditions, stories, myths, culture (and yes, religion) impact, inform, and hopefully improve our lives.

While we value history, we will always lean toward plays that tackle vibrant strands of today’s world: social justice, economic justice, diversity, strong women in Jewish life, LGBTQ inclusion, new perspectives on Israel, environmentalism, and interfaith relations.

Be bold. Think differently about what Jewish theater can be. Strive for epic size and impact. Embrace the emotional, mystical, the theatrical. Tackle the challenging, the controversial, the provocative. We are unafraid to walk these roads with you.

SUBMISSION: Entries are due by October 15, 2016 at 11:59 pm. Each submitting playwright must fill out the Project Application form (www.jewishplaysproject.org/submit). Playwrights will upload their play to the form as a PDF with their name removed (all plays are reviewed blind). There is no fee to submit, but there is a one (1) submission per person rule.

ELIGIBILITY: Full-length plays that deal with contemporary Jewish themes that have never been produced in New York City. The following must be true of a submitted play:

1. It contains significant Jewish themes, characters, content, or points of view.

2. It is not a Holocaust play (stories that deal directly with the history of the Shoah, its survivors and their children, or the World War II period more generally).

3. It does NOT fall into the beloved category of "ethnically stereotypical comedy" (No 'Yiddishemammeh" plays, no "My Afternoon With Bubbe", no "Jewtopia")

4. It is in English. (We welcome translations).

5. It runs at least 75 minutes.

6. It has not had a full production in the NY Metro region, or a major regional theater (LORT C or above).

SELECTION PROCESS:

Every submitted play is reviewed by members of our staff or our 50-member Artist Panel.

Plays submitted to the 6th Annual Jewish Playwriting Contest: The Contest strives to engage a broad audience in a discussion of what new Jewish theater should be; more than 500 people in as many as 10 cities will take part in the process. (learn more here: www.jewishplaysproject.org/jpc).

The Top 10 Finalists will be announced in December, 2016. These Top 10 plays will receive industry and community advocacy through a series of Playwriting Contest Events around the country. At each event, 20-minute sections of 3 of the plays will be read and voted on by taste-making audiences. Plays will be assigned points based on the selection results. At the conclusion of the Contest period, the play with the most points at the end of the Contest period (which ends on Pesach – April 11, 2017), will be crowned the winner.

The winning play will receive a workshop production as part of the JPP’s 6th OPEN Festival of new Jewish Theater at the 14th Street Y in June of 2017, including artist travel to New York.

Plays Submitted to OPEN and Other Programs: Senior JPP artistic staff and advisors will review non-Contest project submissions, submissions by agents and managers, and work by recent alumni of major graduate writing programs for consideration for other developmental opportunities, including:

OPEN: Festival of New Jewish Theater at the 14th Street Y

A limited number of projects, subject to available resources will appear in OPEN along with the Contest Winner.

Renegade Reading Series: a periodic, as-needed in-house reading series for plays that spark the JPP’s interest.

DEVELOPMENT PROCESS: The JPP specializes in what we call Jewish Dramaturgy. We base our exploration of the theatrical needs of a play around the central issue of its Jewish content and ideas, continuing to ask the question

“What is the Jewish here?” When possible, we will bring prominent Jewish thought leaders (clergy, scholars, professionals and artists) into the room to join the development process, and extend the Jewish learning. This specific intentionality is what distinguishes the JPP from other high-level new play development houses.

MUSICALS: Because of its format, musicals cannot be directly entered into the Contest, but we are eager to survey the field, and to provide development opportunities in the future. We invite you to submit your musical and select the “Non-Contest Submission” tag. We will contact you when and if future opportunities arise.

REPEAT SUBMISSIONS: Plays that were submitted to the 2012-2016 Contests ARE eligible (with the exception of the previous year’s winners). We operate on the principle of “passionate advocacy” developed by the Lark – if your play hits the right chord with the right reader, it can go far. Give us a chance to be passionate advocates for your play.

Open Call: New Plays from the World

Milano Playwriting Festival and its producer It’s Time Produzioni Srls are looking for new plays from across the globe. The selected plays will be presented as reading/mise en espace/staging during Milano Playwriting Festival, March 31 – April 2, 2017. If an agreement between the parts is reached, It’s Time Produzioni Srls will also act as literary agent by presenting the plays to Italian and foreign artistic directors / producers.

The submitted play needs to be recently written and possibly never staged before. We are not interested in monologues. There are no script-length, subject or playwright’s age limits.

MiniFest seeks one-act plays

MiniFest is a week-long festival of one-act plays featuring limited cast sizes and scenographic demands. Every year hundreds of plays from around the world are submitted for juried evaluation. A Play Reading Committee creates a short list which is then submitted to an Executive Committee that selects four to six plays for an actor-centered staging by members of the Acadia Theatre Company.

Rules and Guidelines

• Anyone may submit up to two original scripts, provided that neither has been professionally performed.
• All script submissions must be in WORD format and be accompanied by a completed electronic application.
• Scripts will be chosen for their dramatic quality, but also for their suitability for staging by students in our Theatre program. Scripts with limited number of characters and modest production requirements will be preferred. Running times should not exceed 30 minutes.
• Minifest may present as many as eight plays over three consecutive nights. Each may may be presented as many as three times.
• No recording of performances will be permitted.
• Successful playwrights will not be offered royalties.
• Late submissions will not be accepted.

• All scripts must be submitted electronically in Word format. No other formats will be accepted.
• Each playwright may submit only two (2) plays for the competition.
• The Covering Page of each script should include:
• the title of the play
• the playwright's name
• contact information for the playwright (address, telephone number & email address)
• All subsequent pages should be numbered and should include the play's title in a running header or footer. As the jury process is anonymouse, plase do NOT include the playwright's name on these pages.
• Please ensure that all document editing features are unlocked in order to enable removal or manipulation of pages for jury and production purposes. No changes to scripts proper will be made.

PlayPenn Conference seeks full-length scripts

Beginning September 1, PlayPenn will be accepting applications for its 2017 new play development conference; we are pleased to request your full length, unproduced script for consideration. Please review the guidelines carefully and completely before making application. Application materials will be accepted between September 1 and September 30, 2016. Your application must be uploaded and complete by September 30, 2016 or it cannot be considered.

Currently, we are not considering musicals, plays for young audiences or oneperson plays. Also, if you were a 2016 Conference playwright we ask for a one year hiatus from applying.

The 2017 conference will be held in Philadelphia, PA from July 11-30th at The Drake Theatre in Philadelphia, PA. Invited playwrights will have the opportunity to work with a director, dramaturg and Philadelphia-based, professional actors over a 20-day period that allows for 29 hours of rehearsal and staged reading time along with ample time to reflect and write. The work will begin with a three-day roundtable (July 11-13) that will help in laying the collaborative groundwork for the development time ahead. The conference includes two public staged readings that are intended as a part of the process, giving playwrights an opportunity to measure the efficacy of the work accomplished and provide an opportunity to gauge the work ahead. PlayPenn will provide travel for casting for both writer and director, travel to and from the conference, housing, per diem and a stipend.

Applicants should be aware that we are a development conference rather than a festival or showcase for new work. The distinction is important and meaningful to us in the current climate of the increasing commercialization of play development. We work to avoid participation in what has become known as “development hell” by fostering an environment in which risk is rewarded and honest assessment is provided and encouraged. To that end, we focus on the needs of the text. The public Conference readings are intended to present a glimpse into how the text lives off the page rather than how the how the play might be staged in production.

THE Y.E.S. FESTIVAL

Northern Kentucky University | School of the Arts is once again calling for submissions for its award- winning, 18th Biennial Year End Series Festival of New Plays - THE Y.E.S. FESTIVAL, running April 20-30, 2017

Submissions will be accepted from May 1 - September 30, 2016. The

two selected playwrights will each receive a cash prize of $250 and an expense-paid (travel and accommodations visit to NKU to see their plays in production. Selected plays will receive a full production.

WHAT TO SUBMIT

• Full-length plays are eligible. All rights must be fully owned by the author.

• No children’s theatre, one-acts, or reader’s theatre pieces will be considered.

• Adaptations will be considered only if the adapted work is in the public domain.

• A submitted play may not have had a previous professional or university production.

• In deciding which play to submit, a writer should know the festival will be cast with undergraduate student actors. Plays with larger casts are looked upon favorably in the selection process.

• Scripts must be standard sized, legibly typed, and bound. Standard Dramatists Guild format is preferred.

• Submissions (ONE per playwright) should include a one-page synopsis and a cast list with brief character descriptions.

• Selections will be made and selected playwrights notified no later than December 31, 2016.
• Selected playwrights must be available to visit the festival about one week before opening so their visit can be arranged to include late rehearsals and the premiere of their play. Festival dates are April 20-30, 2017. The visiting dates are at the discretion of the festival. The cost of travel and accommodations will be covered by NKU. Selected playwrights will receive a cash prize of $250.
• Playwrights and directors of their plays will participate in one post- show question-and-answer session with the audience.

Strand Theater seeks 10-minute plays from women

The Strand Theater, now in its 9th year, is the only brick-and-mortar theater in Baltimore this season to present outstanding works written ONLY by women artists. This reflects our mission to champion challenging and provocative theater that especially celebrates women's diverse voices and perspectives supported by the creative talents of all artists.

Each fall, the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts sponsors wonderful free cultural activities across the city under the Free Fall Baltimore umbrella.

Our theme for this year’s Free Fall Baltimore short play festival is “There’s no place like home,” to celebrate our recent move to our wonderful new theatrical home in northeast Baltimore’s Hamilton community. Our Free Fall plays are popular and well-attended.

Submissions are open to women playwrights of all ages. You may address the theme in any way that inspires you. Here are the guidelines:

· Plays may not exceed 10 pages (apart from title page) in standard play format.

· Plays may not exceed 3 characters (no limits on gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation; non-human characters are just fine).

· Title page must include title of play, short synopsis, and author contact information (name, address, e-mail, and phone). Include play title and page number on each page.

· All submissions must be PDFs.

· Due to the volume of submissions anticipated, we will only contact playwrights selected for the festival.

From August 1 - September 30 The Landing Theatre Company accepts ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­full-length plays for ­­­­­­­­­­­­the New American Voices Play Reading Series. Four plays will be selected for staged readings during the Landing Theatre Company's Spring Festival in Houston, Texas. Selected playwrights must attend the readings. A stipend of $100 will be awarded to each winning playwright. Playwrights must cover their own travel expenses.

• Submissions accepted from August 1 - September 30.

Format

1. Selected playwrights must attend the festival.

2. Each playwright will be paired with a local director prior to the festival to prepare for the event.

3. Director will cast the play prior to the festival.

4. Each production will receive at least two rehearsals prior to the official reading.

5. One rehearsal will be scheduled when the playwright can attend.

6. The play will then be read in front of an audience, with a moderated discussion of the play afterwards.


Submission Criteria

Submissions must meet the following criteria:

1. Playwright must be a citizen or legal resident of the United States of America.

2. Play must not have been produced.

3. Play must not have had a public reading in the Houston area.

4. Submission must be received on or before September 30th.

5. Submission must be a minimum of 30 pages long and have a minimum run time of 45 minutes.

6. Submission must be in .doc, .pdf or .rtf format.

7. Plays are given blind reads, so there should be no playwright identifiers anywhere on the script. Your name and contact information should only be in the email.

8. Only one play per playwright per submission period.

9. No musicals, children's plays, or one-person plays.

10. Original scripts only. No adaptations or works that involve third party rights.

11. Playwrights will only be notified if your play is selected.

Lady Plays Podcast, a monthly podcast dramatizing new plays by women, is accepting submissions for future podcast episodes. Each episode will consist of a "staged" reading of the play and an optional interview with the playwright. Plays that will easily translate to a "radio" medium and that feature 5 characters or less will take priority at first as the podcast logistics get settled. Plays of all length and style will be considered, writers may submit more than one script.

Shakespeare in the ‘Burg Presents Fourth Annual One-Act Playwriting Competition

Shakespeare in the ‘Burg is pleased to announce our third annual one-act playwriting competition, in conjunction with our Shakespeare in the ‘Burg theater festival scheduled for March 31-April 2, 2017 in Middleburg, VA. There is no fee for this competition. The winning play will be performed during the Shakespeare in the ‘Burg festival.

Please note that you can write in any style you choose; this is not a “Shakespeare” writing competition, so plays in any genre are welcome.

Please bear in mind that your script will be performed for an audience of all ages.

Competition Rules:

Open to all playwrights

Scripts must be original. Musicals, monologues, film scripts and television scripts are not eligible.

Our goal is to produce a one-set show with a small to medium-sized cast, with running times of no less than 25 minutes and no more than one hour. We are all volunteers so no royalties are paid to playwrights and actors and directors are not paid. We do this for the love of theatre and to provide another outlet for playwrights seeking a performance of their work.

No more than one submission per playwright. Give us your best work!

Sponsorship funding is sought to afford us the ability to make cash prizes to the top 2 productions in the festival. 

RULES AND GUIDELINES
Limit TWO entries per playwright.

• Each entry must:
• be unpublished, with 3 or less productions
• (excluding readings, self-productions and/or contest productions);
• require two to four (2 to 4) characters 
• be no more than 10 minutes in running time
• require minimal props and costumes
• excluding the title and cast pages, be no more than ten (10) pages long.

JUDGING PROCESS
Six to eight finalists will be chosen for production in our annual One-Act Play Festival to be held in 2017 (dates to be announced).

Winning playwrights agree to permit M. T. Pockets Theatre to produce their play without compensation. Authors will retain copyright and full ownership of their plays.
Audience members will have the opportunity to vote for the favorite one act play at the festival.
