An evening of 10-minute plays, (rehearsed, cast and directed) presented in the state of the art Off-Broadway Marjorie S. Deane Little Theater at The West Side YMCA, one block from Lincoln Center.

• $20 submission fee (applicants should fill out enclosed credit card authorization form or send a check, payable to The West Side YMCA at 5 W 63rd Street, New York, NY 10023).

• East Valley Children’s Theatre is searching for aspiring playwrights to become a part of the theatre’s future seasons of performances. Contest rules and prizes are listed below.
• All plays must be submitted to East Valley Children’s Theatre no later than March 1, 2018.
• Playwrights must include a cover sheet with name, address, phone number and email address
• Plays must be suitable for children to perform and for an audience of children. (Plays with small casts are not as likely to be chosen for performance; casts of 15 or more are preferred)
• Plays must be 60-90 minutes in length. Shorter plays may be submitted but will not be considered for a seasonal theatrical production.
• Plays and musicals must not have been previously performed. They must be original and unpublished.
• Musicals must include a copy of the music in either manuscript or audio recording format.
• Playwrights are not required to pay an entry fee.

* The first place entry will receive a $500 cash prize, a stipend for travel, and will be produced by East Valley Children’s Theatre in its upcoming season, if it meets all the criteria for performance. Second and third place winners will be announced and recognized.

Native American New Play Festival 2018

Now accepting full-length play scripts written for the stage (60 pages or more)

The Oklahoma City Theatre Company annual Native American New Play Festival is at the heart of our regular season offerings. We invite Native American, Alaska Native, Hawaiian, First Nations and Indigenous Mexico playwrights to submit full-length scripts (60 pages or more) written for the stage from an Indigenous perspective. All themes and topics are welcomed. Plays may focus on historical or present-day issues. We are especially interested in plays that center on an Oklahoma tribe and tribal history within the state.

Selection Process: Full length plays are evaluated by a panel comprised of Native American theatre artists and invested community members. The panel will select 2-3 plays for a staged reading during the festival based on originality, theatricality, and execution. Finalist will receive a staged reading with actors and a director during the festival weekend events.  An audience talk back will follow the readings. A fully realized production will be awarded to one of the staged reading finalists and showcased as the featured production the following festival year during the Oklahoma City Theatre Company’s regular season.

Submissions will only be accepted electronically in either Word or PDF format.  Scripts must conform to industry standard play-script format (one-inch margins, #12 Times or Courier font, all pages numbered). We welcome plays that have had previous workshops and productions within the last five years. Please include a production history if applicable.  Include a title page with full contact information, (mailing address, phone numbers, Email address) a draft or revision date and a character breakdown at the beginning of your script. Please provide a biography of 100 words and provide a photo of at least 300 dpi.  Please label all attachment as follows:  Title of the play Author’s Last Name, First Initial.

ANNOUNCING PLAYFEST 2018 NEW PLAY SUBMISSIONS
PlayFest 2018 will present readings of seven new plays over the weekends of November 2–4 and November 10–11 in the Margeson Theater at OST. Each reading receives about 20 hours of rehearsal time with professional actors and director and a public reading–all with the playwright in attendance.

The seven plays will be selected from solicited and unsolicited scripts. We welcome submissions from agents and from PlayFest alumni as well as ten-page samples from unsolicited work. If you are interested in submitting a play, please read the following guidelines carefully.

WHAT TYPES OF PLAYS ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We generally look for scripts with cast sizes of 1–8. We are especially interested in scripts that speak to the issues that our audiences are experiencing right now. Past PlayFest plays have dealt with issues of racism, autism, gender, Alzheimer’s, immigration, etc. Our Shakespeare and classical productions deal with “timeless issues” and we like for our new plays to deal with modern “issues of our times.” We seek plays of various genres by diverse writers with diverse characters.

“NEW PLAY” ELIGIBILITY

For a script to be eligible for inclusion in PlayFest 2018, a play does NOT have to be a world premiere, but it must be a “new” play. For our purposes, that means:

• The play CANNOT have had more than two previous professional (AEA) productions before PlayFest 2018.
• The play CANNOT have been published.
• The play CANNOT have had an AEA production in New York City or Orlando.
• Most importantly, the author must still be developing and working on the script.
• If you are a playwright with no prior working relationship with OST and no agent, then you should submit a TEN-PAGE SAMPLE. (Do NOT send the full play but pick ten pages to submit along with the rest of the packet.) See below.

If you have an agent, please have your agent send a query or one script to Cynthiaw@orlandoshakes.org. If you have several plays, then have your agent pick one or send a query to discuss which would be most appropriate for OST to consider.

• Please send us your BEST consecutive ten pages, not necessarily the first ten. We want to be able to get a strong sense of your use of language and dialogue to tell your story. We do not have the staff necessary to read full unsolicited scripts, but we are excited to read your best 10 pages and will consider asking for your full script.

Write a 10 minute play and submit it to the Chagrin Valley Little Theatre.  All of the plays will be read by a committee of judges and then 10 plays will be selected to receive a production on CVLT’s River Street Playhouse Stage for the 10-10 New Plays Festival – Kids Edition in August, 2018!

Rules

• Plays can be submitted from anyone in grades 1 through 12.
• The plays can be about anything – they can be funny or serious.  
• They should be no longer than 10 minutes.
• The play should be your own original idea!! Your teachers and parents can guide you and offer feedback, but the characters and ideas must be yours!
• Don’t copy any characters from TV or movies or videos, the story and characters have to be original!
• Please submit only your best script! Additional submissions by the same playwright will be discarded.

SUBMISSIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY FEBRUARY 15, 2018
Winners will be selected by May 1, 2018 for performance in August, 2018.

Suggestions

If you’ve never written a play before, make up a story that you want to tell. Decide who the characters are. Then write what the characters would say to each other to make that story happen.  Describe the setting and the places where the characters are to help the readers imagine the play.  Read some plays to see how it’s done. Have fun with it!

The Jane Chambers Playwriting Award

This award is administered by the Women in Theatre Program. The Jane Chambers Playwriting Award recognizes plays and performance texts created by women that present a feminist perspective and contain significant opportunities for female performers. This annual award is given in memory of lesbian playwright Jane Chambers who, through her plays A Late Snow, Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, My Blue Heaven, Kudzu, and The Quintessential Image, became a major feminist voice in American theatre. The awardee will receive an award of 1k from the WTP Program, and, from ATHE $500 towards travel expenses (reimbursement), in addition to conference registration and two nights in the conference hotel.

Waltzing Mechanics seek documentary plays

This two day event will feature selections from original works written by playwrights interested in telling stories about real people and events.

Each piece will be assigned a director, a cast of up to seven actors, and guaranteed two performances.

FAQ: WHAT IS A DOCUMENTARY PLAY?

Conceptually, it’s not all that different from a film documentary or non-fictional literature.  But with documentary theatre, these stories and events come to life in a way only experienced on a stage.  The minimum and most essential criterion for these works is that they must be about something that actually happened and substantially utilize words spoken or written by real people.  From there, we encourage playwrights to creatively explore the medium and craft narratives in ways that exemplify or challenge convention.  So, if you’ve got an original piece where you play every member of your family, or a musical based on letters written by Civil War soldiers, or a dark comedy based on Senate hearings and Presidential Tweets, this is your moment.

The Peekskill High School and Middle School Acting Classes will be accepting short play submissions for their 2nd Annual New Play Festival.  Students will be in charge of selection, acting, designing, directing, and producing chosen work which will culminate in a full-scale evening of drama in May 2018. This is a quest to expose our students to outside theatre resources and make connections with worldly practitioners.  Peekskill, NY, is an artistic, multicultural community just an hour north of Manhattan (Located in the historic Hudson Valley). Guidelines as follows:
For Middle School (7th and 8th Grade) FIVE MINUTE PLAYS (or less)
For High School (9th-12thgrade) TEN MINUTE PLAYS (or less)

*Deadline: Thursday, February 15th 2018. 

Selected plays will be notified mid-April and performed in May.
* Three characters maximum. Gender and age non-specific.
*Please provide a cover letter. Include: contact information, a title page with character descriptions, numbered pages, and any specific production needs. Specify if your play is intended for Middle or High School (or both).
*Must be unpublished, but may have had professional productions/workshops/readings.
*All content, themes, and genres welcome. School appropriate language preferred (especially for Middle School age). Work will not be altered, censored, or cut unless the playwright does it themselves.
*Playwright may submit as many works as they wish. (Multiple copies for the actors, would be helpful and greatly appreciated.)
*Please note: We are not selling tickets or making a profit off of the plays we will be using. Therefore, playwrights will not receive any compensation for using their work. By submitting to us, the playwright is agreeing to their work produced for classroom work, which will culminate in a full production and presented to the public.

Cupcake Lady - Another Taste of Rotten Theatre

Help us crown the Best of the Worst at ANOTHER Taste of Rotten Theatre!   Laughed out of the writer's group?  Great!  Told it would never be staged?  Amazing!  Sure it doesn't work?  WE'LL give it a try!  Dig through your trash with the rest of the rancid meat and find the most terrible, inscrutable, incoherent play you’ve ever written.

This is the one contest where clunky, ham-handed dialogue and wildly implausible scenarios work in your favor!   Cupcake Lady Productions will select five (5) plays as finalists to be performed (badly) in Another Taste of Rotten Theatre in the first week of April. The finalists will be announced in March.  

Three judges will rate each play on a scale of 1-10.  The audience will also vote on the same scale, counting as a fourth judge. The votes will be tallied and the Best of the Worst, based on the highest total score from the judges, will receive our GRAND PRIZE!

Guidelines:
• The author of the play must be same person submitting it
• You must own the rights to perform the play you are submitting
• Plays must be 10-minutes or less in length
• One (1) entry per person only, please!
• Entries may be short, self-contained plays, or a 10-minute scene from a longer play (out of context scenes are strongly encouraged)
• Former contest winners are eligible to enter, but the entry must be a different play
• No plays submitted by judges, volunteers or performers participating in Another Night of Rotten Theatre 2017 will be considered.
• Entries must be sent to rottentheatreclp@gmail.com by 11:59PM EST on February 28th.

In this autobiographical solo piece, award-winning actress Sharon Washington revisits her time growing up in an apartment on the top floor inside the St. Agnes Branch of the New York Public Library, where her father served as the building's custodian.

Pan Asian Rep NuWorks 2018

Pan Asian is now accepting submissions for our 2018 NuWorks 1-week performance.

Performing June 12-18, 2018 in Studio Theater at Theatre Row. NuWorks presents a wide range of new work from emerging artists who dare to explore different genres and techniques.

Submission Guidelines

• News works (solo or duo show preferred) that is fully rehearsed and READY to perform as only one rehearsal in May/June.

• Work can be any style (comedy, drama, cabaret, musical, dance, experimental, etc.) at 15-45 minutes in length.        

• Work previously not presented in New York City is preferred.

• Shows should be low tech (no projections), high quality in content, and provide own props and costumes.

• We are looking for a diversity of voices, does not have to reflect contemporary Asian American themes.

• Pan Asian will provide artist stipend, rehearsal, theatre space, and marketing/PR.
