Sit in on a session and see for yourself!

Script Consultations

If you don’t have time for the workshop but have a script you’d like some feedback on — just send a PDF of your script and you’ll get a critique via email and/or video conference. See website for rates.

Richard Caliban has worked with  individuals on their scripts from all over the world — Indonesia, China, Greece, Australia, Serbia, as well as right here in New York. Entry condition

The 2024/25 Theatre503 International Playwriting Award aims to identify and champion debut/early career playwrights.

You are an eligible writer if you have not already had a full-length play of more than 65 minutes produced for 3-4 weeks or more in any theatre, and two weeks or more in a major subsidised theatre/organisation including a national tour. You only have limited international credits where longer runs are not part of a country’s ecology and/or limited screen credits.
  • Work must be submitted by the writer or the translator and not through a third party/agent
  • The reading process is anonymous. Please do not include your name or contact details anywhere in the text of your script. Your personal information will be held separately
  • The online portal will be open for submissions from 9am (GMT) June 1st until 12pm (midnight) June 30th 2024. Any entries received after this time will not be eligible
  • Only entries submitted online though theatre503.com/writers/submissions will be accepted.
  • Please do not submit any material by any other means. E.g. on paper, email, CDs, digital media
  • Please do not submit or include any other material, or include images in your script
  • Adaptations or musicals are not eligible
  • Plays must be written/translated into the English Language
  • Plays (including translations) must never have been professionally optioned, produced or published at the point of submission
  • Only one script may be submitted by each writer
  • Co-written scripts can be accepted, provided both writers are eligible under our Award criteria – prize money will be shared in the eventuality of a co-written play
  • Theatre503 must be informed immediately should you wish to withdraw your play at any point
For Translators
  • While we are very keen to encourage first time translators, we are aware that a degree of experience may also help the realisation of the original writers script, so we are open to a wider pool of translation experience.
  • Please ensure permission of the original writer has been secured before submitting the translation (and vice versa)
  • Should a translated play win the award, the prize money and advance shall be split equally between both parties
  • Both parties shall also be credited as winning writer and translator (or as finalists) in all subsequent award information and publicity
  • More than one translation can be submitted but each must have a different original writer
By submitting a script for consideration you agree that:

  • You have not had a play produced for a 3 week run in any theatre, two weeks or more in a major subsidised theatre/organisation including national tours, limited international credits and/or limited screen credits
  • The script does not contain any detail of your identity
  • You are the writer of the play and exclusively own and control all copyright and all other related rights to the play (and the translator owns and controls the rights to the translation)
  • The play is over 65 minutes in length
  • The play is an original, unperformed, unpublished work for the stage and has not been produced anywhere in the world. In the case of a translation, this applies to both the English language translation and the work in its original language.
  • The play is available for production and unattached to any other theatre or company
  • If you are the winner you will receive £3,000 in prize money and £3,000 as an advance against 8% of the gross box office, to grant Theatre503 the exclusive license to produce the play for up to 18 months after the announcement of the award
  • Samuel French Ltd, a Concord Theatricals company, will have the exclusive right to publish the winning play in return for an advance to be negotiated in good faith

The Garden State New Play Festival: Bridging Art and Community

Website

Deadline: June 30, 2024

Submissions via Google Docs Form

The New Jersey Play Lab is thrilled to partner with Jersey City Theatre Center (JCTC) and the Department of Theatre and Dance’s BA Theatre Studies Program at Montclair State University on The Garden State New Play Festival, an innovative model that reimagines the approach to new play development and festivals, fostering a supportive environment for playwrights while actively engaging audiences and communities.

Submissions are now open for the inaugural festival which will take place in the spring of 2025. Submissions will be accepted through June 30th, 2024

Plays in all styles and traditions that center around social justice (locally, nationally, or globally) will be considered. Social Justice can mean many things so we encourage playwrights to think broadly, individually, and personally around this topic.

There are no residency restrictions on submissions, but playwrights will be expected to be in-person in Jersey City on a number of occasions between October 2024 and May 2025. There is assistance with housing but travel costs are not included and will be the responsibility of the playwright.

Playwrights must submit and will be chosen for this new play festival in one of the following categories:Working or Career Playwrights (This category is for writers who consider playwriting to be their primary career path.)

Beginning or Non-Career Playwrights (This category may include writers who are relatively new to the full-length format, or writers who have been creating plays for years but have opted for an alternative professional career path).

Playwrights should submit:
  • a cover letter
  • a resume
  • a synopsis of the play
  • the first 20 pages of the play
Other participants in this multi-faceted festival will include community members from Jersey City-based advocacy groups, student playwrights from local universities and high schools, and an international artist either from abroad, or from one of the area’s thriving immigrant populations.

All of these artists will engage in a 6 month (October-March) development and exchange program under the dramaturgical guidance of The NJPL, with assistance and mentored participation from Dramaturgy Students and Alumni from The BA Theatre Program at Montclair State University .

This new approach to new play development aims to bring artists of all career levels together without barriers of hierarchy, and to blur the lines between artist and audience, while still respecting the integrity of each individual artist’s craft and experience. It aims to frame the art of playmaking as a means of expression and advocacy, and as a tool for deeper understanding of self and one’s surroundings. It aims to detract from an emphasis on quality and viability and place the focus on intention and communication. It aims to serve as a model for how to truly bring audiences into the process of playmaking through cultivating and honoring their own artistic impulses, thus simultaneously inspiring more people to create art and fostering an audience with an appreciation and appetite for new work on the stage.

PlayGround-NY Writers Pool 2024

Website

Deadline:  June 30, 2024 11:59pm ET

Are you a New York-based early-career or aspiring professional playwright? Have you ever wanted to see your plays performed on stage by leading local professional actors? Do you respond well to deadlines?

PlayGround is seeking applications for the fourth PlayGround-NY Writers Pool. Only members of the Writers Pool are invited to submit for the Monday Night PlayGround short play staged reading series, from which each year’s Best of PlayGround are selected. PlayGround releases a prompt on a Friday morning and writers have just four-and-a-half days to write an original ten-minute play inspired by the prompt. Of the submitted scripts, 6 get chosen for a fully-staged, partly-teched, script-in-hand reading led by leading local directors and actors, on fourth Mondays, October-March. Writers not chosen in any given month can participate in PlayGround Recess, with the opportunity to hear their work read aloud by professional actors and receive peer feedback in a private setting.

The PlayGround Writers Pool has featured some of the nation’s most distinguished new writers of the past two decades, including Lauren Yee, Christopher Chen, Jonathan Spector, Geetha Reddy, Vincent Terrell Durham, and Diana Burbano, among others.

POOL REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible, writers must reside within the five burroughs of New York City.

Writers Pool members must commit to submitting for at least four of the six Monday Night PlayGrounds in any season. The submission of a script to Monday Night PlayGround grants PlayGround the exclusive option to stage the play as part of the Monday Night PlayGround and, should it be so selected, to present the world premiere as part of Best of PlayGround and the non-exclusive right to publish the script in the “Best of PlayGround” anthology.

All selected writers must attend a mandatory meeting for the Writers Pool on Monday evening, August 26, 2024.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

To apply for a place in the 2024-25 writers pool, please submit a 10-page max, double-spaced script as a Portable Document Format (.pdf) attachment. Both previously produced and unproduced scripts are eligible. The script must have the playwright’s name, address, email and phone number at the top of the first page and include a detailed cast breakdown, and all pages must be numbered. The script title must be labeled by Lastname_Firstname_Title.

Excerpts from longer works are not accepted but short plays that meet the above requirements and are derived from a longer work are accepted. BIPOC, trans/gender-non-conforming & differently-abled playwrights are encouraged to apply.

Applications must be received by 11:59pm ET on Sunday, June 30, 2024. The 2024-25 PlayGround Writers Pool will be announced on or before August 1, 2024.

The submission form can be found HERE.

For any questions not answered above, email to info@playground-ny.org.

Applications for Irons in the Fire 2025 are now open

Website

Deadline: Sunday, June 30, 2024 at 11:59pm EDT

ONLINE PROJECT APPLICATION

Irons in the Fire is Fault Line Theatre's year-round reading series of new plays in development.

Every play and every playwright require something a little different, so the format and timeline for each project is malleable. Our only requirement is a public sharing of the piece at some point in the process. Each reading is also supported by a fun social event that brings the Independent Theatre Community together in a meaningful way.

A Few Thoughts Before You Apply

Applications are due Sunday, June 30, 2024 at 11:59pm EST

You can apply with a project as either a writer or director

At this time, we can only accept one application per artist

Projects need not be finished. We accept proposals for pitches, outlines, drafts, and everything in between

There is no set template for each Irons in the Fire project. The only requirement is a public sharing of the piece at some point in the process.

The two lead artists on each Irons in the Fire project– usually a playwright and director– will receive a $1800 stipend.

Fault Line Theatre creates and produces socially relevant, character-driven plays for today’s audiences. We love all sorts of plays that fit into our mission.

Submission Components

You will need to be prepared to upload the following documents:

Project Information Sheet (click here to download)

A maximum 20 Page selection from the proposed script and a brief primer on what we need to know. (Note: Send us your favorite 20 pages, not necessarily the first 20 pages!) If it’s just an outline or pitch try to give us a clear sense of the project. Feel free to submit a pitch deck with images, a text-based outline, or anything in between.

Sapphest NYC Summer 2024 seeks 10-minute plays

 Instagram account

Deadline: June 25, 2024 at 5PM

Submit via Google Forms

If you are a queer woman/sapphic playwright and would like to submit a play, please write an 8-10 minute play (must not exceed 10 minutes) inspired by the title of a classic sapphic pop song (think "Good Luck, Babe" "Honey," "Lunch," "Slumber Party," "Where Does the Good Go," "Her Body is Bible," "Lipstick Lover," "Fast Car," etc.) The possibilities are endless. The play should not have more than 4 actors (can have more than 4 characters but must only be played by max 4 actors).

The audience will guess which play is inspired by which classic sapphic pop songs which will all be listed in the playbill.

*Please note, the play should not be a direct retelling of the song but instead inspired by the title or lyrics of the song. The play does not need to contain exclusively sapphic characters or be a sapphic story. The point is to center sapphic playwrights and directors. Each playwright may submit one play per event.

The plays will be chosen by a committee of queer judges. All plays will be read blind. Information in this survey is collected to help us understand who we are reaching. You will be notified by the first week of July if your play was chosen.

Please fill out the form ASAP (you don't have to have your play ready to submit). The form will close once submissions are full. Play submissions are due via email (sapphestnyc@gmail.com) June 26th at 5pm.

Exhume submissions for Fall 2024

Website

Deadline: June 30, 2024

We strive to publish visual art, poetry, prose, and drama in order to help writers who discuss queerness and trauma find a home for their works. Though we especially seek submissions that discuss these topics, we accept good writing across the board. We appreciate work that speaks to the human experience on a raw level. Consider works like Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl,” Jo Ann Beard’s “The Fourth State of Matter,” and John Cheever’s “The Swimmer.” Above all else, we want writing that makes us feel something. Writing can be traditional, experimental, or a hybrid of the two. Surprise us!

We accept both established and emerging artists and writers across the board. We welcome simultaneous submissions, though we ask that you let us know immediately should your submission be accepted somewhere else. At this time we do not accept previously published work.

All submissions should be emailed to exhumeliteraryjournal@gmail.com.

Please list the genre you’re submitting under in the subject of your email, as well as your first and last name. Please paste your third-person bio, maximum 75 words, in the body of your email and submit your works as attachments in .doc or .docx format. All documents should be submitted in 12 point fonts.

Submit up to 3,500 words of prose in one double-spaced document.

A+ Playwriting Contest for Teachers

Website

Deadline: June 30, 2024

Sixty years as one of the leading play publishers for the educational market has taught us that some of our best-selling shows are written not by professional playwrights, but by teachers who create a play based on the specific needs of their drama program. Once published, these plays are quickly embraced by other teachers who share the same opportunities, challenges and limitations that seem universal in schools.

We want to encourage the development and publication of quality plays written specifically by teachers and other educators. Our A+ Playwriting Contest for Teachers is open to all teachers employed at an accredited K-12 public or private school in the US or Canada. All plays submitted for publication through this contest must have been produced within the past two years at the school where the playwright teaches.

Submissions will be accepted on an on-going basis with a June 30 cutoff each year. All qualifying manuscripts accepted for publication will be considered contest finalists. Pioneer Drama Service reserves the right to forego naming a winner from the finalists, at its discretion.

The contest winner, selected from contest finalists and announced no later than October 31 each year, will receive a $500 royalty advance and a one-time $500 donation to the school theatre program where the play was first produced.

Contest Rules

Only entries submitted in accordance with all rules will be eligible for consideration.
Playwright must be a current or retired faculty member at an accredited K-12 public or private school in the US or Canada.

Only entries submitted with an Official Contest Entry Form will be considered.

Only entries that have been fully staged at the teacher’s school no more than two years prior to the submission date will be considered. We encourage you to take advantage of this production to revise your script as needed before submitting your manuscript.

All entries must be accompanied by proof of production in the form of a copy of the program, a newsletter or newspaper article, a review, a photo or a letter from the school principal.

Contest entries must meet all Pioneer Drama general guidelines and requirements for play submission, which can be found at pioneerdrama.com/playwrights/submit.asp.

Individuals currently published by Pioneer Drama Service are not eligible for this contest. Pioneer Drama Service employees and their families are also excluded.

All manuscripts submitted for this contest will automatically be simultaneously considered for our annual Shubert Fendrich Memorial Playwriting Contest, which is open to all individuals not previously published by Pioneer Drama Service. See pioneerdrama.com for more details.

SHIFT Issue 7: Bending, Blurring, & Breaking Genre

Website

Deadline: June 25, 2024 at 1AM

The ability to organize things into neat little boxes & categories is something we love to do––genre is one such example. However, people rarely fit so neatly into the boxes we are put in. Our identities & ways of knowing can be messy, fraught, complicated, & language-transcending. Overtime, our ideas of what genre is & what it can be are starting to align more closely with who we know ourselves to be, too.

Consider Walt Whitman’s creation of free verse poetry, or Truman Capote’s unconventional blending of journalism & non-fiction novel writing for his book In Cold Blood. For SHIFT volume 7, we ask you to place yourself in this tradition. Lean into ambiguity & leave us guessing. Toe the line between two worlds. Send us your favorite works that defy genre & conventional exceptions. Send us your poem that reads like a story, your flash fiction that feels like a scene straight out of a play––hell, maybe even a recipe that reads like a poem! Send us your Both/And.

Website

Deadline: July 1, 2024
Ghent NY

SUBMIT VIA SUBMITTABLE

Art Omi: Writers is now seeking proposals for Translation Lab 2024, a 12-day special, intensive residency for four collaborating writer-translator teams in the fall of 2024.

Art Omi will host four English language translators in New York's Hudson Valley for 12 days. These translators will be invited along with the writers whose work is being translated into English. All text-based projects—fiction, nonfiction, theater, film, poetry, etc.—are eligible.

This focused residency will provide an integral stage of refinement, allowing translators to dialogue with the writers about text-specific questions. It will also serve as an essential community-builder for English-language translators who are working to increase the amount of international literature available to English-language readers.

The dates for Translation Lab 2024 are November 12-23, 2024. All residencies are fully funded including: airfare, train transportation from New York City to the Art Omi campus, local car transportation, and a small honorarium. Please note: accepted applicants must be available for the duration of the Translation Lab (November 12-23, 2024). Late arrivals and early departures are not possible. Please do not submit a proposal unless both parties involved (translator and writer) are available for all dates.

Art Omi: Writers will be accepting proposals for participation until July 1, 2024. Translators, writers, editors, or agents can submit Project Proposals.

Each proposal should be no more than three pages and provide the following information:

1. Names of the translator and writer applying, as well as contact information (physical address, email, and phone) and the original language of the text. These details should be provided at the very top of the proposal.

2. Brief biographical sketches for the translator and writer.

3. A description of the proposed project, including details about how you envision structuring your working time together.

4. Publishing status for the proposed project. (Projects that do not yet have a publisher are eligible.)

In addition to the Project Proposal, please submit a Work Sample. If sample pages of the English translation for the proposed project are available, please include them (no more than 25 pages). If they are not yet available, please provide another translation work sample.

92NY'S MUSICAL THEATER DEVELOPMENT LAB

Website

Deadline: June 15, 2024

92NY’s Musical Theater Development Lab is seeking playwrights and composers specializing in Theater for Young Audiences (TYA). The Lab offers a unique platform designed to support and showcase works specifically tailored for young audiences, providing an invaluable opportunity for these pieces to undergo active exploration and development.

We believe in the power of staged performances to bring theatrical creations to life and foster their growth. Through developmental readings and staged productions, selected TYA composers and playwrights will have the chance to witness their works unfold on stage, receiving feedback from both fellow creatives and the most important audience members: families and young theatergoers.

We are actively seeking TYA composers and playwrights with pieces that would benefit from our 2024—2025 Development Lab season beginning this July.

Applications are due June 15, 2024.

To apply, please send:

- - A proposal for your TYA musical of no more than 1000 words, including where you are in the process and why seeing the work stages would benefit your process.

- - A ten-page sample of your writing, preferably from your proposed musical. If this is not available, you may submit a sample of previous work intended for TYA.

- - A demo recording of 1-3 musical numbers from the musical. Please DO NOT attach these to the email; rather, upload to Google Drive/Dropbox and send a link.

- - Bio or resume of each member of the creative team.

- - A statement as to why you think you are a good fit for this project.

Send materials by June 15 to Attn: Megan Doyle, Executive Artistic Director, Mdoyle@92ny.org (PDF or links required; please do not attach large files as it will cause your email to be rejected).

Deadline: none - first 200 scripts

SUBMIT VIA SUBMITTABLE

City Theatre is looking for the best short plays from all over for our upcoming 2024-25 season that furthers our mission to identify, acknowledge, and award excellence in dramatic writing. Having produced hundreds of plays, we want scripts that are lively and timely, hilarious, provocative, poignant, and surprising. We look for plays that span style and genre. We will consider bilingual scripts and ten-minute musicals. We have no restriction on the age range of the characters. In other words, we are seeking compelling plays that rise above the ordinary.

City Theatre seeks compelling plays that rise above the ordinary. Playwrights from across the country are invited to submit lively, timely, hilarious, provocative, poignant, and surprising scripts. We look for plays that span style and genre. We will consider bilingual scripts and ten-minute musicals.

Contest finalist scripts are contenders for production at various productions and programs City Theatre presents year-round. To submit a play, please visit citytheatre.com on June 1st. We highly encourage the submission of plays from writers who self-identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), women, and LBGTQ+. We invite writers at all career levels to submit. Contest finalist scripts are contenders for production at various productions and programs City Theatre presents year-round. The contest opens on June 1st and will remain open until the maximum number of submissions are received. Each playwright may only submit one play for consideration. Playwrights are encouraged to submit as soon as possible when the contest opens.

These shorts will not only be considered for the contest, but for City Theatre’s year-round short play programming:

SUMMER SHORTS - City Theatre’s signature program of eight short plays produced annually in June, was established in 1996.

SHORT CUTS – City Theatre’s Tour for Young Audiences features a diverse cast performing four age- and theme-appropriate short plays, presented for free to students of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

CITY READS, presented year-round in partnership with local, independent bookstore Books & Books, invites the community to enjoy a free reading of short plays related to the theme and participate in a conversation about the works and issues presented.

Playwrights can submit only one script - send us your best!

Each script must be no more than ten pages long. We start counting when the actual play begins.

City Theatre is opening a limited submission call for NPX playwrights only. This submission call will be limited to the first 200 scripts. We will only accept one play per playwright, and if you tag your play for this submission, you MAY NOT submit to City Theatre's general submissions via our website. Playwrights may only submit ONE play to ONE submission call. Those who submit twice will have their plays deemed ineligible (please don't make us do that!)

Previously submitted plays, longer one-acts or full-length plays or musicals won’t be accepted or returned.

City Theatre will consider previously produced works with a production history included with submission.

The volume of scripts submitted prevents us from providing feedback or criticism.

NOTE: City Theatre will only contact playwrights with scripts the company considers for the Susan J Westfall Short Playwriting Contest, or we are interested in producing in its various programming. ONLY those playwrights will be contacted by email or phone call, no later than June 1, 2025.

Thank you so much for submitting your SHORTS to City Theatre. We appreciate your interest in our theatre and wish you happy submitting!
