Breaking the Binary Theatre Festival 2023

Website

Deadline: March 12, 2023

Breaking the Binary Theatre Festival is BTB Theatre's yearly event presenting works wholly created by and for transgender, non-binary, and Two-Spirit+ (TNB2S+) artists. For more information about BTB's mission and values (including more information on BTB's usage of "TNB2S+"), please visit our website.

Thank you for your interest in submitting your piece to the 2023 Breaking the Binary Theatre Festival! We are so looking forward to reading your work.

Please find some guidelines below that will streamline your submission process outlined below:

1. One full-length play per writer, please.
2. While we are looking forward to expanding to support musicals in the years to come, at this time we are only accepting non-musical works.
3. When uploading your PDF below, please title the document in the following format: (LastName, FirstName - TITLE OF PLAY.pdf)
4. The submissions deadline is Sunday, March 12, 2023.

Each submission will be read by our team of readers (all of whom are a part of the TNB2S+ community). Every submission will be read by two different readers in an effort to get multiple perspectives of each submitted play. Our evaluators will assess the work's strengths and weaknesses along with three key elements: excitement about the piece, the work's uniqueness, and the developmental state of the play. Plays will be evaluated from late March through mid-late April. All playwrights will be contacted by a member of our staff whether they've been selected for the festival or not; we expect to contact all playwrights throughout May and June. Each selected piece will receive a five-day workshop culminating in a public presentation of the work in October's Festival.

PLEASE NOTE: This form is solely for TNB2S+ writers looking to submit their works in consideration for the public-facing all-TNB2S+ 2023 Breaking the Binary Theatre Festival. If the mission of the Festival does not suit the needs of your piece, but you'd still like to be considered for other commissioning and artistic opportunities at Breaking the Binary Theatre, please submit here instead.
