Yun Theater Shorts Festival: In Between seeks short plays

Every spring and fall, birds migrate long distances for food and survival. It is never easy; they face the danger of being left behind by their flock, dying on the road, or being hunted by humans, but they do it anyway. Fish also migrate; millions of fish swim thousands of miles through oceans and rivers to reach their destination to reproduce. Humans have always migrated as well. Our bodies and ideas move from one place to another, across cities, countries, continents, and oceans.

We want to ask: why do we migrate? How do we migrate? What happens after we migrate? What are the limitations? Can we adapt? How do we adapt?

We believe that the best way to engage our community in this conversation is through short plays. Therefore, we are calling for several 10-20 minute short plays that explore this idea and hope it will spark a meaningful dialogue within our community about the complexities and realities of migration.

During the summer, we will produce a collection of selected short plays in one of the Seattle theaters. The show will have a run time of one and a half hours with no intermission. An ensemble of actors will be playing the characters in each selected short play.

Theme: Migration

Length: 10 - 20 minutes

Actors: Under 6 characters

Language: Either Chinese or English

Please reach us at yun.theatre.seattle@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

What's your selection process?

A panel of five individuals will conduct a blind reading of all submitted plays to ensure a fair and impartial selection process.

Must I write about physical migration of humans?

Nope! It can be anything you find relatable to this theme. It can be concrete or abstract, realistic or surreal. You have the liberty to understand it however you like and use your free imagination. The form of the script is not limited either. It does not have to be text-based.
When will I hear back?

We will release the results in mid-March!

Do I need to be physically in Seattle to submit the script?

No! We accept all scripts that meet the criteria. However, the final presentation of the short plays will be based in Seattle.
