Project Y Theatre is opening an application for their 5th Annual Women in Theatre Festival, which will take place June 2020 at The Gural Theatre, NYC.

Project Y is seeking productions of plays that are written by a female identifying playwright and that feature more than 50% female-identifying characters. An ideal play for the Festival is either:

  • A one person show, ready for a crowd
  • A new/developing work multi-character project that would be able to take advantage of a night in the space.
  • A festival-ready show

Chosen productions will get a performance slot in A.R.T. New York’s Gural Theatre as part of the Women in Theatre Festival. This opportunity is ideal for director/playwright who want a no-risk opportunity to see and hear their work out loud in front of an audience, festival-ready shows, or one-person performances.

The Women in Theatre Festival seeks to broaden the opportunities for women in the entertainment industry by producing new work by women with more than 50% female representation of all artists involved.  www.witfestival.projectytheatre.org.

Project Y supplies the space, but you would need to supply everything else, including all production costs, professional stipends, etc.  Productions can be equity or non-equity, but it is up to you to apply to equity for the appropriate permission.

Playwrights should note that the Women in Theatre Festival is NYC based - there will be no housing provided by Project Y and productions must invite their own audience, although the production will be included on all Project Y advertising and outreach.

Project Y operates on a split box office agreement with festival artists.  We guarantee an audience capacity of at least sixty-five seats. Project Y will keep income from the first 15 full price tickets sold;  after that, all sales will be split 70% to artist/30% to Project Y. Tickets are normally set at an average of $20-$25 general admission, so that we can also set up discount codes to help push tickets.

There will be minimal tech time (90 minutes) and tech capabilities (rep plot lighting) for each show.  There can be no moving of lights or changing/adding to the plot during the festival. In other words, shows should be made with the “festival” aspect in mind. Running time of shows can be from 30 min through a full length production.  Project Y will supply a stage manager to help call the show, and a board operator for lights and sound.

Project Y will handle all box office and front of house staffing. Project Y will sell concessions before each show and during intermission when applicable.

To apply for the Women in Theatre Festival, playwright should send a script sample (a dramatic beat of no more than 20 pages) and/or a video clip of work (5 minutes), a resume, and a statement of intent via Google Form, at http://tiny.cc/tfnriz. To report problems with the form or to ask questions, please email info@projectytheatre. Applications not received via the Google Form will not be considered.

Deadline for submissions is Feb 29th, 2020.
Playwrights will be notified of their application status on March 28th, 2020.
