Beaumont Community Players (BCP) is announcing a festival of new works set for its inaugural presentation in August. The Southeast Texas Festival of New Plays is slated for the week of August 12th through August 18th and will feature staged readings of four previously unpublished plays. Other activities of the festival week will include a Thursday night panel discussion with the authors and other industry professionals and talkbacks with the audience after each reading. Cost for the Festival is $15 for the week or $5 per reading and BCP subscribers’ are admitted to all events free of charge.
Submissions are now being accepted for full-length or one act (non-musical) plays and the four participants will be chosen July 1st. Each play will receive a weeks’ worth of rehearsal with a director, dramaturg and a company of BCP actors culminating in a staged reading of the play over the closing weekend of the festival. Authors are encouraged to attend the week’s rehearsals and a small stipend will be paid to each chosen playwright.
Previously un-produced original plays can be submitted electronically to: John@beaumontcommunityplayers.com
Or sent by mail to the theatre; 4155 Laurel, Beaumont, Texas 77707
John Manfredi BCP Executive Director talked about the new programming.
“We are committed to developing new talent here at BCP; actors, singers, designers, directors and now playwrights. Theatre is only as good as the stories we have to tell and developing new voices is essential to the continued health of theatre as an art form. This new festival not only helps develop the authors’ skill but continues the growth of BCP by giving more opportunities for actors and directors to be involved here. Actors with little or no experience can gain confidence in this supportive format of collaboration and directing a staged reading is great training for directing on one of our stages.”
