They are BACK!  The Fine Arts Association will once again showcase original, never been produced in the state of Ohio 10-minute plays.  Those chosen will be fully produced as part of the 22nd One Act Festival — Ten Below in April, 2019 at The Fine Arts Association.

Submissions of original ten-minute plays will be accepted beginning  Wednesday, August 1, 2018. Submission deadline is Monday, October 1, 2018. Only ONE 10-minute submission will be accepted per playwright. Submit your favorite!  The number of plays to be produced will be at The Fine Arts Association’s discretion and will depend on the mix of qualified submissions.   Original plays accepted for the Festival will be announced between January 7 – 18, 2019.  The plays selected will be given full production within the capabilities and budget of The Fine Arts Association. There are no submission fees for this Festival. There will be no monetary stipend for plays used in the Festival.

Festival Submission Guidelines:

-   Submission must be an original, never before produced in the state of Ohio 10-minute play at time of submission.  Plays that have had staged readings will be accepted. Plays that have received full productions, either professional or amateur, prior to submission will not be accepted.  Legal clearance of materials not in the public domain is the full responsibility of the playwright.

-   Limit of ONE play may submitted by each playwright.

-   Maximum Length: 10 pages not including title pages.  Play should run in the 10 minute range.  Longer submissions will not be considered.

-   Scripts may be comedy and drama.  Not open to musicals.  No more than 6 characters.

-   Simple set and costumes needs and minimal technical requirements.   Only basic furniture and minimal props available for the production.

-  Plays must be submitted with a title page containing the following contact and bio information:

-  Playwright’s name, mailing address, phone number, e-mail address and a brief biography.

-  International submissions are welcome.  All scripts must be in English.

-  All play submissions will be handled with care. However, The Fine Arts Association assumes no responsibility for lost or damaged scripts.

CLOCKHOUSE, the literary magazine published in partnership with Clockhouse Writers' Conference and the MFAW program at Goddard College, seeks short dramatic works from emerging and established playwrights for its 2019 issue.  Dramatic works can be either a standalone piece or a self-contained excerpt from a play or screenplay, and up to 15 pages in length.

CLOCKHOUSE is devoted to a variety of genres, publishing fiction, poetry, memoir, creative nonfiction, as well as dramatic work. Our mission:  Dare. Risk. Dream. Share. Ruminate. CLOCKHOUSE is an eclectic conversation about the work-in-progress of life—a soul arousal, a testing ground, a new community, a call for change. Join in.

Deadline is December 1. 

All submissions must:

• Be original, unpublished work written by the author
• Follow the industry-standard formatting guidelines appropriate for the genre as well as the applicable guidelines below:

• Fiction: Short stories and self-contained novel excerpts in a literary style. Genre fiction will be considered only if it sustains literary merit (Up to 5,000 words)

• Poetry: All poetry in traditional and experimental styles including prose poetry (Up to 250 lines of poetry, total. Only one poem per submission. Poets may submit up to three times per reading period.)

• Memoir and Creative Nonfiction: All memoir and creative nonfiction in traditional and experimental literary styles. No academic or scientific essays (Up to 5,000 words)

• Dramatic Work for Stage or Screen: Short dramatic works in traditional and experimental styles, either a standalone piece or an excerpt from a one-act or full length play or screenplay (Up to 15 pages)

• Include a short bio of approximately 100 words or less
• Include a brief artist statement: a few sentences about your work as an artist (i.e., not a “pitch” for this submission, but rather a statement about what you’re interested in writing about now, what drives your writing, or how your writing is reflecting or influencing the world at large, etc.)
• Be submitted only through our online submission manager (see link at bottom of page). No email submissions will be accepted
• Submissions that do not follow these guidelines will be discarded unread.

The submission period for the Summer 2019 issue will begin on  August 15, 2018, and remain open through  11:59 p.m. on December 1, 2018.

Responses to submissions

Upon acceptance

By accepting any offer of publication by Clockhouse, the author will grant the magazine first serial rights. Upon publication, rights to the work revert back to the author. The author retains all other rights to the work. Any subsequent publication will note that the work was first published in Clockhouse. Payment for publication in Clockhouse is one contributor’s copy in which the work appears. As appropriate, we may also choose to nominate published work for awards or other recognition.

CLUBBED THUMB OPEN-APPLICATION COMMISSIONING OPPORTUNITY FOR WRITERS OF COLOR

Like our Biennial Commission, this application asks that writers respond to a series of prompts with a ten-page piece of initial writing and a one-page proposal for a full-length play, which will be read without the readers’ knowledge of the writer’s identity. One or more writers will be awarded (or will share) a $15,000 commission. Unlike the Biennial Commission, which is open to all writers, submissions for this award are open only to writers of color.

For this commission, Clubbed Thumb is interested in plays that employ alternative structures and shapes. We ask you to consider one of five alternative play shapes–landscape, spider web, nesting dolls, circle, double helix–and craft a proposal for how you will employ that play shape to best suit the story you wish to tell. This is subjective, of course, and meant to trigger the imagination, not be academic analysis. Some examples of what we mean:

Landscape: in which we learn about the world through accumulation

Our Town by Thornton Wilder is structured a bit like a landscape painting–we are introduced to everything all at once and Wilder zooms in and out of the landscape in order to tell the story.
Other examples might include: Wilder Gone, God’s Ear, Mlima’s Tale

Spider Web: in which we learn through disparate scenes that seem disconnected but are linked at odd angles and actually cohere around a central theme or argument
Booty Candy by Robert O’Hara could be seen as a spider web play–at first each scene feels like a vignette exploring a discrete idea, however, as more and more divergent worlds are explored we begin to realize that each world is connected in exploration of a single theme.
Other examples might include: Lear (Young Jean Lee), Doll’s House Pt. 2, Of Government

Nesting Dolls: in which we learn through analogies and juxtaposition
Mr Burns, a Post-Electric Play by Anne Washburn might be seen as a play shaped like a set of nesting dolls–each act is its own entity and the dramatic movement lies in building out from what came before.

Other examples might include: Fairview, An Octoroon, Barbecue

Circle: in which we learn through reflection
Fefu and Her Friends by Maria Irene Fornes might be a circle play. The most important dramatic events happen in the middle; act one leads us into these events and act three deals with the aftermath; the end of the play reflects themes that are present in the beginning of the play.
Other examples might include: A Map of Virtue, The Aliens, Father Comes Home From the Wars

Double Helix: in which we learn through thematic associations between the narrative threads
Stop Kiss by Diana Son could be a double helix play – the story is told in two threads simultaneously–what happened before and what happened after the inciting event–with thematic links between these narratives.
Other examples might include: Midsummer Night’s Dream (might be a triple helix), We are Proud to Present…, The Tomb of King Tot

You are also welcome to propose your own unconventional play shape. Should you choose to do that, be rigorous and make the case for it.

Your proposed play should also include the following:
1) At least three characters in every scene (no two character scenes)
2) Some simultaneous talking
3) Some found or repurposed text
4) A character pretending to be someone else
5) No indoor spaces

1) A one-page letter of intent describing your proposed project;
2) 10 exploratory pages from the proposed project (either contiguous or from different sections of the proposed play);

IMPORTANT NOTES

No names please — on the letter, the 10 page sample or the finished play for reference, or in any file names. The panel reads all submissions BLIND — the only place your name should appear is on the info form and on your resume.

The letter of intent should briefly map out the proposed piece, how you will use the chosen shape to tell the story and, if need be, orient the reader to the excerpt’s relationship to the whole. You needn’t explain or repeat anything that your 10 page sample makes clear. Then give us an idea of where the piece is coming from and where you think you want to go with it.

We ask you to include one of your finished plays for reference. Note (where prompted in the form) any relationship or similarities the complete play has to the proposed project, and recommend 10 pages for us to start with.

One last thing: this is a commission for Clubbed Thumb. So look around our website at our guidelines and production history for reference, if they are not familiar to you. Many of our plays have been published individually or in our anthology, “Funny, Strange, Provocative”, and are widely available to read.

THE HENLEY ROSE PLAYWRIGHT COMPETITION FOR WOMEN

The first 200 submissions to be received between July 1st and August 31st will be considered. Once 200 scripts have been submitted an announcement will be made and the application will be closed.

Submissions must be completed full-length or one-act plays. No 10-minute plays, please.
Submissions must be the original work of the submitting female playwright.
Submissions may not have been previously produced or fully staged.
Submissions are due by August 31st, 2017 and must include all of the submission materials to qualify.

Playwrights

If you wish to submit an original play which you believe meets the PCA's mission, please send a letter of inquiry with a brief synopsis (only) to the attention of our Executive Director at director@pca-az.net.  Original plays WILL be considered for our Family Theatre, Stage Too or Reader's Theatre productions.  Please indicate that the script is intended for one of these venues.

​Final decisions on venues will lie with the Production and Play Selection Committees with approval of the Board of Directors.  Our venues include Mainstage; Stage Too; Reader's Theatre; Family Theatre, and Prescott Summer Rep ( in Stage Too.)  NOTE: We will accept popular, well-known, small cast, COMEDIES only for Summer Repertory!

Stage Too Submission Cast Size Limit:  All Stage Too regular season submissions (including Reader's Theatre and Prescott Summer Rep) are limited to a cast of 6 or less.  Titles with more than 6 cast members will be considered, but are unlikely to be chosen for production.

Each play title submitted MUST  be accompanied by the following:

• A hard or electronic copy of the title.  PCA WILL NOT purchase a hard (including a CD of the music if appropriate) or electronic copy.  That is incumbent upon the submitter.  PDF scripts should be obtained by the submitter and attached to the Script Submittal Form.

2nd Annual Black Box New Play Festival

The Gallery Players in Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York, is seeking plays for its 22nd Annual Black Box New Play Festival to be held in January 2019.  Each play selected will be given a black box production at Gallery Players and will be performed in a festival format with non-equity actors.

Playwrights must be available for rehearsals, if not in person then by skype, phone, or email, and use this as an opportunity to continue work on their play.

THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS:  POST MARKED BY August 31, 2018.

The Coachella Review seeks short scripts

The Coachella Review is the literary arts journal of the University of California Riverside–Palm Desert Graduate Center and the MFA program in Creative Writing and Writing for the Performing Arts.

We accept original work that is vibrant, thoughtful, and precise. Whether your work is innovative or traditional, we strive to celebrate writing that holds readers in awe.

We welcome dramatic writing for both stage and screen. We are interested in scripts within the ten to thirty page range, but may also accept shorter pieces. Stage plays should follow Final Draft format (see example here). Screenplays should be in Final Draft screenwriting format (see sample here). Please submit only Word documents. Multiple submissions are not accepted.

Diez Minutos 2019 seeks 10-minute plays

Players Workshop seeks plays for its Seventh Annual International 10-Minute Play Festival. This fully-staged festival will be in English and will take place in late March of 2019 in the international arts center of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico — a World Heritage Site brimming with charm, history, and culture. San Miguel was voted Conde Nast Traveler Magazine 2013 "Best City in the World.” In 2017, readers of Travel – Leisure Magazine voted it the #1 city in the world to visit.

There is no fee for submitting. Each playwright whose script is selected and performed will receive a $25 USD cash honorarium and two complimentary tickets to the production. One play will be selected as the Audience Favorite and its playwright shall receive an additional $25 USD cash award.

In honor of the festival’s seventh anniversary The Founders Award, a special cash prize of $100 USD, will be awarded to the author of the best written play, as chosen by the festival’s founders.

No other remuneration will be provided, and any playwright attending must do so at his or her own expense.

One play will be selected as the Audience Favorite and its playwright shall receive an additional $25 USD cash award.  No other remuneration will be provided, and any playwright attending must do so at his or her own expense.

Submission Guidelines

Players Workshop may delete, without reading, any submission that does not comply with these rules.

Only one play may be submitted per entrant. Send us your best!

Only the first 100 plays entered are guaranteed to be considered.

The theme for 2019 will be The Seven Deadly Sins (wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, gluttony; please pick only one). Scripts must relate to the theme but are not otherwise limited in subject matter or content.

No nudity. Suitability for performance before a general adult audience will be a factor in selection.

No musicals or children’s plays, please.

The play must be submitted by email, as an attached PDF file. No MS Word files or other formats will be accepted. The subject line of your email should include your name and the title of the play and the “sin” your play covers: e.g., Shakespeare; King Lear; Pride.

Blind submissions. The submission shall include all contact information for the playwright, including name, address, telephone number and email address on a separate title page; the script must be in standard play format, with a title page, a character listing, the setting, props, and any technical requirements or other production considerations.  Your name must not appear on the script. The two PDF files should be titled "Submission [Name Of Play]” and "Title Page [Name Of Play].”

The play must be in English and no longer than 10 pages in standard format, with a calculated running time of no less than eight minutes and no more than twelve minutes.

Submission period opens on August 1, 2018. Entries must be received prior to midnight U.S. Central Standard Time, August 31, 2018. No late submissions will be accepted because of transmission problems.

The play must be unpublished but may have had previous productions. If the play has had previous productions, a production history must be included with the submission. The submitting playwright must own all rights to the play.

Selection of plays will be at the absolute discretion of the judges.

Selection of a play does not guarantee production. Producers may decline to produce a selected play because of casting, directing or any other consideration, in which case no payment will be due the playwright.

Notification is expected to be made no later than December 1, 2018. Only playwrights whose plays have been selected for performance during the festival will receive notification of acceptance.

Playwrights whose plays were received in the first 100 submitted will receive first-round notification. Producers reserve the right to consider additional plays not received in the first 100.

Plays are restricted to 5 or fewer characters. Small casts are preferable, as the stage size is modest, with minimal set, props, sound cues, and costuming. Our talent pool is composed mostly of actors aged 40 and older. This will be a factor in selection.

Entering playwrights grant the producers of Diez Minutos permission to perform the play as needed during the Diez Minutos festival (March 13 – 24, 2019), and to make as many copies of the script as are necessary for production.  All other rights remain with the playwright.

While we won't know exactly what we like until we see it, we do like honest, accessible work. Things that are overly abstract or don't make readers feel something don't do it for us. We want you to make us laugh and/or cry. We want you to challenge us as readers. We want your work to pass the Bechdel Test. We will not tell you which writers we worship, though we will tell you we don't worship Raymond Carver, Ernest Hemingway, or John Updike.

Rights revert to the author upon publication. While we  cannot pay contributors at this time, we hope this changes in the future.

Story Camp Studios is seeking LGBT Plays 15-Minutes or Less for our upcoming “Come Out
with Plays” New Playwrights Reading Night in association with this year’s Orlando Pride Week
taking place in October.

Plays should be 15 Minutes or Less and contain LGBT characters and themes and include a
cast of 5 Actors or Less. The plays will be carefully selected and curated, therefore all genres
are encouraged, particularly comedy but open to all. 6-8 plays will make the final selection and
be assigned to local professional Talent and Directors.

The event will take place in Orlando, Florida as a part of the Orlando Pride Week Festivities on
October 12th (Exact Date TBD) and will support local LGBT charities and causes, but
playwrights are not required to local or in attendance in order to participate and submit their
play.

To submit, please send an electronic copy of your short play in PDF format via email. In the
body of your email, please also include a brief bio, contact information, and logline for your play.

There is no submission fee and no fee to participate, nor limit to number of submissions.

Call for Plays - Women Playwrights Series

The Centenary Stage Company, an Equity theatre in residence on the campus of Centenary University in Hackettstown, NJ is accepting submissions for the 2018 Women Playwrights Series (WPS) and Susan Glaspell Contest.

Now in its 27th year, the WPS is a developmental program dedicated to providing a working forum for the unique and underserved voice of women writing for the theatre today.  Each season 3 new plays are selected for a collaborative workshop process, with a professional director and actors, which takes place in a brief rehearsal period, over a period of a approximately 1 week, allowing time for the playwright to hear and adapt their work with other professionals.  The process culminates in a presentation of the work for the public as part of the Series, giving CSC audiences larger exposure to new work, as well as offering the playwright an opportunity to get feedback from the audience during the development process.

Playwrights selected for the workshop process will receive a $200 honorarium.  Additional funds for travel and housing are available for one playwright each season.

The 2019 Susan Glaspell Contest:
One play from the WPS Festival will be selected by a panel of judges as the winner, to be featured in a subsequent CSC main-stage season as a full production, with an additional award of $1500 to the playwright.

Guidelines for WPS Susan Glaspell Contest:
Submit full - length play, with no prior AEA production.
(If play has had one workshop production, please include information in your cover letter about the company, # of performances, and contract, if applicable)

Please include 1 letter of recommendation from a professional colleague or professor/instructor familiar with your work.

Note: we are rarely able to consider work with over 7 cast members.

The Open Theatre is calling for ten-minute plays for our December 18’ production of SLAM Boston Diverse Voices in Theatre, Boston’s Favorite 10-Min Play Competition.

We are The Open Theatre and that means we will consider work from anyone. Maybe you went to drama school. Maybe you didn't. Maybe you've written a hundred plays. Maybe this is your first, either way, we are particularly interested in seeing work from people who may have experienced the world as The Closed Theatre. We want to see work from women, artists of color, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and others whose voices have not been traditionally heard. So please share your work with us so that we can share it with others.

How the SLAM works:

• 8 Plays & Directors will be chosen
• Once teams are assembled, they will rehearse independently
• Technical Elements: minimal scenery (cubes, chairs tables) Lights Up/Down Only and props must fit in one grocery bag
• Plays must not go over 10min or longer than 12 pages.
• We will have One Tech Day at BPT
• Each play will be performed on both nights
• The audience will vote on their favorite plays, winner is chosen from the average scores from both nights. The winning team (Actors, Playwrights, Directors) will win a cash prize! 
• As an OTP Fundraising event, every position from producing staff to playwrights are volunteer

2019 Female Playwrights ONSTAGE Fest: Swimming With Giants (submission form)
This year’s festival theme is SWIMMING WITH GIANTS.  Playwrights are invited to submit short (1-10 minute) plays and/or monologues written on this theme.  In the past we’ve had great success with short scenelets as well (10-minute plays comprised of a couple of scenes, which we can sprinkle throughout the line-up).

**We know that the "ten-minute" thing can feel vague/limiting/over-done/etc.  But believe us, we have built some truly kick ass festivals out of some truly phenomenal short pieces that meet (or even beat) the ten-minute mark.  Our most successful plays have been those that move with a snappish pace, that punch you in the gut and keep on running, or make us laugh so hard we gasp for air and then BOOM, it's over and we're over the moon.  Short plays that leave us wanting more instead of feeling antsy are the bees knees, as far as we're concerned.  So please adhere to the under-10-minute challenge and have fun!  (And keep in mind we strive to produce as many playwrights as possible, so shorter pieces do stand a better chance of making it to the final line-up)**

Remember:  Little Black Dress INK utilizes a peer review process for evaluating plays.  By submitting to this fest, you agree to participate in this unique opportunity to help select plays for production.

Once our submission window is closed, you will receive a selection of plays to read and score using the LBDI online eval form.  You MUST read and submit your evaluations by the required date in order for your play to remain in consideration.

Submitted works will be read by other participating playwrights and LBDI artistic personnel.  By submitting to the festival, you agree to share your work for review in this process.

As always, LBDI will be producing readings of the top scoring plays at locations nation-wide.  The top eight to ten scoring plays will also move on to full production with Little Black Dress INK in 2019.

Submissions will be accepted July 1st – Aug 15th.

Object Movement Festival for puppetry seeks submissions

APPLICATIONS FOR OBJECT MOVEMENT 2018-2019 ARE DUE FRIDAY, AUGUST 31 AT 5PM. 

OBJECT MOVEMENT is a curated festival and developmental residency for puppeteers and object theater artists. The purpose of the program is to develop new work and advance existing works-in-progress that address social, political, ethical, and/or philosophical questions through puppetry and object theater, culminating in a festival of performances. Participants will meet weekly as a group to share the progress of their pieces and offer feedback. The group is moderated by a curatorial team of puppetry artists and producers. Group meetings will be from September 2018 through May 2019, culminating in a festival of performances.

Workshop meetings will take place weekly on Tuesdays at 7pm at The Center at West Park on the Upper West Side starting September 18, 2018 and continuing through May 2018. Participants will be expected to commit to the weekly schedule with a minimum number of absences.

Festival performances will be in the Center’s Balcony Theater on May 17-19 and 24-26, 2019. Each participant will have at least three total performances on one of the two weekends. Final performances may be short (15-20 minutes) or full length (40-50 minutes).

Participants will receive up to 40 hours of free rehearsal space at the Center during the residency. Free rehearsal hours may be used in the Chapel between 10am and 6pm, Monday-Friday and must be reserved in advance.

Artist Fee

All participants will receive an equal share of the box office proceeds from the festival as an Artist Fee at the end of the residency.

Festival Info

The Object Movement 2019 Festival will take place over two weekends, with Program A running Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19 and Program B running Friday, May 24 through Sunday, May 26. Participants will be scheduled in Program A or B in early 2018 based on performer availability. Each piece in the festival will get one full day in the theater for tech and dress rehearsal.

The Center will provide front of house and technical staff for the festival, including a box office manager, house manager, technical director, and production stage manager. Equipment including a lighting rep plot and PA sound system will also be provided. All tickets will be $15 and sold through the Center’s website.

Print and digital marketing materials, including posters and Facebook pages, will be created by the Center. The Center will host a promo photo shoot in advance of the festival, and provide a photographer for production stills.

Application Information

Artists of all ages, experience levels, and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Applications should be for a specific project, either a new piece or an existing work in progress to be developed further. Please upload a one-page text description and one-page image/illustration of the project you would like to develop and perform during the residency and festival.

Your text description should include:

• the style of puppetry or object theater used in the project
• the social, political, ethical, and/or philosophical question(s) addressed in the project
• why puppetry or object theater is essential to addressing the question(s) and the conception of the project
• the length of the piece you are hoping to perform at the festival and how much of the material you have already created, if any
• Please upload a document with one-page resumes or narrative biographies for up to three lead artists participating in the project. PDF preferred.

  * Plays must be typed/word-processed and page-numbered.

The Yale Drama Series 2019 playwriting competition

The Yale Drama Series is seeking submissions for its 2019 playwriting competition. The winning play will be selected by the series' current judge, Ayad Akhtar. The winner of this annual competition will be awarded the David Charles Horn Prize of $10,000, publication of his/her manuscript by Yale University Press, and a staged reading at Lincoln Center's Claire Tow Theater. The prize and publication are contingent on the playwright's agreeing to the terms of the publishing agreement.

There is no entry fee. Please follow these guidelines in preparing your manuscript:

1. This contest is restricted to plays written in the English language. Worldwide submissions are accepted.

2. Submissions must be original, unpublished full-length plays written in English. Translations, musicals, adaptations, and children's plays are not accepted. The Yale Drama Series is intended to support emerging playwrights. Playwrights may win the competition only once.

3. Playwrights may submit only one manuscript per year.

4. Plays that have been professionally produced or published are not eligible. Plays that have had a workshop, reading, or non-professional production or that have been published as an actor’s edition will be considered.

5. Plays may not be under option, commissioned, or scheduled for professional production or publication at the time of submission.

6. Plays must be typed/word-processed, page-numbered, and in professional play format.
