Full production of the play in Los Angeles produced by The New American Theatre at the Odyssey Theatre. Performance of the piece will be under the supervision of Jack Stehlin, utilizing the talents of the acting company of the New American Theatre.

All playwrights whose work makes it to the level of semi-finalist will be given first consideration for any full-length work they may have to be included in the New American Theatre Full-Length reading series, which takes place in January and February.

One act plays which have not been previously produced in Los Angeles, CA (plays with simple staging requirement s are favored). Running time must be twenty-five minutes or less.

You will receive e-mail confirmation of the submission of your work at the time of submission. Further notification will only be given to semifinalists.

No subject restrictions, no fee

Please submit full script as an e-mail attachment. No contact information should be on the script itself. Body of the e-mail should include title of the work, author’s name, address and contact information. Dear Friend in the Theatre,

Whether you've thought about doing a short play in New York but have never tried, or if you're a regular at such events around town, please give a thought to producing a show in the March Short Play Lab. Not only do you rub shoulders with your fellow short-play playwrights, but you get to showcase your work to people you don't know yet. Our Labs are always well-attended, and they can lead to other festivals and events that we produce, such as the Midwinter Madness Short Play Festival and the Midtown International Theatre Festival (visit our website: www.midtownfestival.org for submission opportunities and requirements). The rules for submitting to March's Short Play Lab are easy-peasy:

Deadline is March 8. Notification will be soon after submission, depending on number of submissions. The sooner you get your script in, the more time you have to prepare. Get that script in pronto!

Plays should be 1 - 10 pp. in standard playscript format.* (The shorter the better; shorter plays get priority.) Include a title page, as the first page of the script, with your contact info (only means of contact is by email).

Submit scripts in a PDF file.

You produce the play whether or not you live in New York. The SPL provides the theatre. This Lab will take place at Roy Arias Studios, 300 W. 43rd St., New York, NY 10018.
Productions must be non-union: no showcases please! (And no Equity waivers, either.)
Keep production values to a minimum: costumes and hand props are okay. We provide rehearsal cubes, chairs, and a table. You can't leave your stuff in the theatre overnight.
We provide a board op, box office, and venue management.

There are no fees. The SPL keeps the door.

Tickets are $20. Each playwright and director gets to watch his/her show for free. There are no other comps.

There will be a tech rehearsal in the daytime on Saturday, March 21. The production dates are Saturday, March 21 - Sunday, March 22.

Every play gets 2 performances, 1 on Sat. and 1 on Sun. Each play will be part of 1 of 2 programs: Program A or Program B, but not both. Program A takes place at 7 pm Sat. and 4 pm Sun. Program B takes place at 9 pm Sat. and 2 pm Sun.
We don't do staged readings. Be off-book, please! Plays not off-book during tech will be removed from the line-up.

THE MOST POPULAR PRODUCTION IN EACH PROGRAM RECEIVES A CASH PRIZE OF $75. Winners are determined by polling patrons after the performance. We reserve the right to break ties.

*12 pt Times Roman; character names in the middle on their own line; line spaces between speeches and between speeches and stage directions; indented stage directions.

The SPL is a lot of fun and a good way to see your work on its feet in a supportive environment. It's also a great way to see actors and directors at work, so you can recruit people for later productions.

16th Annual Midtown International Theater Festival

MITF Call for Scripts

The Midtown International Theatre Festival (MITF) is gathering projects for its sixteenth season (production dates: July 13 - August 9, 2015). (The last week is exclusively for the Commercial Division.)

If you have a project you think might be worth producing in the MITF, now's the time to send it in! The rules are easy-peasy.

There's no application fee. 

If your project is accepted, there's a participation fee of $600 ($999 for Equity showcases). This earns you a place in the Festival, with many FREE perks (see below). If you wish to participate in revenue from your show, you may pay a Theatre Usage Fee that entitles you to a share of the gross.

In exchange for your participation fee, the Festival offers a unique array of benefits unmatched by any other theatre festival in NYC:

• Twenty hours FREE rehearsal time, plus severely discounted additional time
• FREE showcase insurance
• FREE external storage (availability permitting)
• FREE marketing consultation, with E-mail followup
• No side letter with Equity, so no hidden costs
• COMPS for all participants to each others' shows
• Five production photos taken by our publicity staff

Our regular lineup of full-lengths will be supplemented by our Commercial Division, to be held at an appropriately splendid venue (Off-Broadway style, at least). This division is for shows with commercial ambitions. Shows can have sets; they get more time to set up and strike; they get unlimited extra rehearsal time during the run to fix problems; and the Festival will stay open an extra week just for them.

In addition to our traditional festival of full-lengths, we are also a growing festival of one-acts, known as the MITF Short Subjects, curated in person by Festival executive producer John Chatterton. Short Subjects must be 60 minutes or less and are performed in the same spaces as the full-lengths. Short subjects don't pay an application fee, and the participation fee is only $100. They get most of the same perks as full-lengths, except for free rehearsal time (they can pay for unlimited discounted time) and marketing consultation. Short Subjects are also limited to non-union productions. They receive half the profits from their performances. To develop innovative theatre, the MITF is devoted to keeping costs for participants down, starting with such benefits as 20 hours’ FREE rehearsal space for full-length shows, FREE storage, FREE showcase insurance, and more.

In addition to our regular performances, last year we included performances of the Short Play Lab, normally done during the regular theatre season only. The Short Play Lab comprises 2 programs of 10-minute (or less) plays, each program performed twice in one weekend.

Finally, last year we also fielded a cabaret series. We’ll be looking for more cabaret acts this season.

We require scripts to be E-mailed to us in Word or PDF format, with ancillary materials (like music demos) E-mailed in appropriate file formats. You may snail-mail us DVDs where appropriate.

The MITF is the third-biggest theatre festival in New York City. It also has the biggest ratio of paid staff to participants. And the Midtown location can't be beat for access to industry and general theatregoers!

Gloria Ann Barnell Peter Playwright Competition

Playwrights are invited to submit original scripts to the sixth Gloria Ann Barnell Peter Playwright Competition.  The friends and family of Ms Peter -a playwright, actress, and lover of history- established a fund at the Morgan Opera House in Aurora, NY, to honor her memory and to encourage the writing and production of theatre art.  

Criteria include: the play must be an original work, previously unpublished.  It must dramatize an historical event or an historical fiction.  It may include one or two acts and be no less than 45-60 minutes in total length, with no limit of form.  All scripts must be typed and will become property of the Morgan Opera House.

Submissions must be postmarked by Monday, March 2, 2015.  The winner of the $500 prize will be announced in April and the play will be presented at the Morgan Opera House, a small historic raked-stage theatre, in late 2015.  Submit one copy of work to Gloria Peter Playwright Competition, PO Box 327, Aurora, NY, 13026.

Raw Stages New Works Festival

History Theatre (St. Paul, MN) is accepting proposals and/or completed scripts for the Raw Stages New Works Festival in January 2016.

The Raw Stages New Works Festival is an opportunity for playwrights to workshop a script with a team of professional artists and receive audience feedback at a public reading.

Playwrights may submit an idea for a script (which has yet to be written) OR an already-completed script (which has not been previously produced).

One entry will be selected for the festival.  The playwright will be awarded $1,500 and at the conclusion of the festival the script may be considered for a full commission and production in History Theatre's mainstage season.

Submissions must be in line with History Theatre's mission:

History Theatre entertains, educates, and inspires through creating, developing, and producing new and existing works that explore Minnesota's past and the diverse American experience. Its work provides a unique lens which links our past to the present, explores our common heritage, and illuminates our understanding of what it means to be American. 

   NOTE: History Theatre's focus is telling the REAL stories of REAL people (please do not submit ideas/scripts in the genre of historical fiction).

Playwrights should submit:

 *   A one-page treatment which includes plot synopsis, cast of characters, and a statement of why the play would fit History Theatre's mission.

 *   A 10-page writing sample from previous dramatic work (or from the completed script being submitted.)

Playwrights whose submissions were not selected in previous years are encouraged to re-submit, as we receive many great ideas but are only able to select one each year.

Submission deadline: March 1, 2015

Playwrights will be notified by April 1st if their treatment is selected and will have until Dec. 15, 2015 to submit a first draft.  The Raw Stages workshop and reading will take place in the first three weeks of January 2016.

Guidelines

• Plays must be between 10 – 25 minutes in length
• Maximum of five characters
• You must be able to attend the reading
• Preference given to plays that have never been produced or performed
• Please submit plays in PDF format

Casting

One Acts and Snacks will cast your play using our pool of interested actors and actresses. Please let us know if you have someone you would like to read a specific part in your play.

Please note that readers may not exactly fit your character descriptions, but we will make every attempt to have actors read male parts and actresses read female parts.

Privacy and rights

You retain all rights for any play submitted or performed. We do not permit and audio or video recording of the reading. Photography is not allowed.

Barter's Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights (AFPP)

This annual festival celebrates the richness of the Appalachian tradition by showcasing the stories of the region, both past and present, and the inspiration it provides the writers who live here.

Since 1933, Barter Theatre has been developing new works and nurturing area talent. The AFPP has gained national attention by developing a process that has resulted in new plays being produced not only on one of Barter’s two stages, but in regional theatres across the country.

Keep on the Sunny Side, by Douglas Pote, first read at the AFPP in 2001, went on to a full production on both of Barter’s two stages before touring to 23 states in 2004-05. Enjoyed by more than 100,000 people, this poignant love story about A.P. and Sara Carter has been produced by theatres throughout the country. Black Pearl Sings by Frank Higgins, was first read and developed in 2006 at the AFPP and, in 2010, was listed as one of the most produced plays of that year by TCG.

Project Outline

Barter’s Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights is actively planned and organized throughout the year.

Here's what happens: A brief rehearsal process (six hours/play) takes place in June with an emphasis placed on clarity, not effect—getting the playwrights words and story out to the audience. The plays are read by members of Barter’s Resident Acting Company.

Following each public reading there are audience and artist discussions about the play, led by Richard Rose, Producing Artistic Director, and a panel made up of local and regional theatre professionals. The reading and discussion is an invaluable tool to a playwright seeking to discover what’s working in the play and what needs work. Over the years, the AFPP has developed an audience who love to be a part of the process of helping playwrights develop their work. This process works because the playwright has a chance to hear from the very people who will eventually be buying tickets to their play!

Play Submission Guidelines:
Plays must be written by an Appalachian playwright (currently living in the Appalachian Mountains which, for our purposes, run from New York to Alabama) OR the plays must be set in the Appalachian region.
Plays must be unpublished and must not have had a full professional production .
Full length plays are preferred.

The 2015 AFPP readings will take place August 20-23rd, 2015. All playwrights who submit will be notified in early June as to whether or not their play has been selected for reading.

The playwrights of the selected plays will each receive $250 plus transportation and housing so that they may attend their reading.

Submission Guidelines 2015

The BBC Radio Drama Readings Unit welcomes submissions from writers new to radio for their annual series, Opening Lines which is broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

The next window for sending in material is

5th January – 13th February 2015.

We are unable to respond to unsolicited stories submitted outside this time-frame.

The three successful writers will have their stories broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and be invited to the BBC in London to see their stories being recorded. As well as broadcasting the three strongest stories we publish transcripts of the best stories submitted within this period on the Opening Lines website.

KEY INFORMATION

To ensure your story is read and doesn’t miss out on this opportunity, the following criteria must be met:

• Writers who have previously had a story/stories broadcast on network radio or have substantial writing credits in other areas of radio (e.g. comedy and drama) are not eligible for this series.
• We only accept one story per writer.
• Please don’t re-submit stories that have previously been considered for Opening Lines
• Stories must be between 1,900 and 2,000 words in length.

Submissions which fall outside of these parameters will not be considered.

We are looking for original short stories which work being read out loud i.e. with a strong emphasis on narrative and avoiding too much dialogue, character description and digression. Pay particular attention to how the story opens and closes, the ending needs to link back to the beginning.

We are interested in seeing stories which cover a broad range of subject-matter but material which explores particularly dark, harrowing themes is not suited to Opening Lines. Stories must not contain defamatory, obscene or any other unsuitable material which is likely to cause offence to a wide audience of all ages. We will read all eligible submissions and get in touch with those writers whose stories have been longlisted for the 2015 series by the 15th May 2015, which is when the longlist will be published on our website. We regret that we are unable to respond to those writers whose stories haven’t been selected, but you will of course, be able to check the website to see the longlist.
