Website

Deadline: December 12, 2022

Submit via Submittable.com

Be aware that Submittable charges a nominal processing fee and fees for organizational use: this is not a submission fee. If this is a financial hardship, contact the editors at review@tusculum.edu.

The Tusculum Review is pleased to announce the first annual Gary Garrison Playwriting Award for 10-Minute Plays. The winner receives $1,000, publication of the play in The Tusculum Review’s 2023 issue, and a staged reading of their winning script in the Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Center at Tusculum University. Tusculum University may produce a staged production of the winning play at the Old Oak Festival in April 2023 or in the future.

Please submit a cover letter with your entry. The cover letter should include the title of your entry, your name, postal address, phone number, and email address. Please do NOT include your name or any other identifying information on any page of the play manuscript.

A panel of eminent playwrights will select the prize finalists with judge Gary Garrison and Gary Garrison will determine the winner of the 2023 prize.
  • Names and identifying information will not be visible to the judges. The Tusculum Review reserves the right to extend the call for manuscripts or cancel the award.
  • One submission per playwright.
  • Your play must not exceed ten minutes in time, no matter what the actual page count.
  • There is no limitation on theme, style, content, structure, or any other dramaturgical notion.
  • We are looking for engaging, realized characters intertwined with a compelling conflict that utilizes elements of good storytelling. To that end, we are not interested in comedy sketches.
  • No musicals, monologues, or adaptations.
  • Plays must be primarily in English, though the occasional use of languages and vernaculars whose meaning would be discernible in context to English-speaking audiences is welcomed.
  • Plays can be previously produced.
  • Plays must be free of any publishing encumbrances.
  • The winning play will be performed as a staged reading in the Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Center in April 2023 or Tusculum University may produce the winning play at the Old Oak Festival 5 x 10s this academic year or in the future. Please keep your production elements simple and appropriate to a ten-minute play.
  • Because of the volume of plays that will be submitted, we are unable to respond to each play and playwright.
  • A list of finalists and the winner of The Gary Garrison Playwriting Award for 10-Minute Plays will be announced on The Tusculum Review website and distributed to all social media networks by January 9, 2023. The winning play will be staged in April 2023. The journal issue will be published in November 2023.
All plays should be submitted as a text or image file through Submittable
